It would be interesting for a real scociologist to take a good look at how an online game, such as ours, can positively effect the real world, and seriously ask why that happens. Afterall, our community does generate goodwill, acts of kindness, and charity in the real world. A good line of research would be why a virtual community( most of whom never meet in real life), can be compelled to help each other and help improve the real world. I would like to think that our players, even if they only play villain side, try to live up to the Heroic Idea, even if a litle bit. Has the game 'rubbed off' on us? Or is it human nature to do so?

That wouldn't sell to people predisposed to hate MMOs or video games ... and lets face it the people who like video games will spend their money on the game, not the book that tells them why they like the game.

On the positive side I have seen a lot of people learn the value of teamwork, some of these individuals would likely never enjoy sports so can't learn it there. and yes it is a stretch but in CoH the theme is to uphold order and defend the downtrodden ... yes not everyone follows by that but really they burn GTA for its 'negative' message why not praise CoH for the positive message? duh ... silly me that wouldn't sell books

This guy's a sociologist or something, moreover he's a professor.

What he did and how he behaved is the equivalent of an electrical engineer with 15 years of experience sticking a fork in a socket and then being surprised at the outcome.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well put ... If you do things people don't like, they won't like you. Does anyone know exactly what his point was? because it seems a little elementary or non-exsistant

EDIT: I read the first bit of his paper, he was trying to prove why social order exists and what ways it developed ... a decent point executed like a moron ... One person says 'I don't like this' then one or more people will agree and say 'I don't like this' at some point someone else will come along and say 'I do like this' and proceed to do it disrupting the other parties, effectively proving that if you do things people don't like and stated they don't like they won't like you. Compounded by what everyone I know knows that the anonymity of the internet allows people in many ways to respond to things that anger them with little fear of reprisals, which as even my 60 year old computer illiterate grandmother knows means people will respond as harshly and violently as they please to try to dissuade the other person from their disruptive behavior.

It wasn't a complex system, a group of people felt competing against someone who used exploits in the system and with no gain to themselves set out to hinder the larger group. Such an elementary point would be more easily proven by observing children in a schoolyard ... you know how many are there and know it is safe, more over you are not actively involved inside the system you are observing.

Bret_Cath, I understand there are ethics boards that decide when it has gone too far, I never dealt with them due to my field of study, and moving books or equipment silently is manipulating a system without interaction with the subjects what Twixt did is disrupted the subjects, then taunted them, manipulated them in such a way to get desired results as it is well documented nothing was done the same every time and he never said the same thing. Also in a university library you knowingly are a subject of academia, every student of higher learning knows this and agrees to this. If I am wrong someone from NC Soft can correct me, this game was made for relaxation and enjoyment
  3. You bring up very good points, and I believe that for any given scenario a real study on societal behavior you need 200+ subjects and the background of these subjects must be known (At least so some degree) ...

This was pseudo-science, someone looking to find something to prove a point he decided upon well before starting any 'research'. And reading the description, this guy seems larger than life the most amazing and wonderful and noted player ever to play the game ... yet still nowhere near as well known as jranger and his 'skillz' are highly suspect, the feats in the article he claimed are an obvious stretch.

Generally if you want to honestly write a book (which is the point of any academic writing) don't write it about yourself, you yourself knowing what you want to prove skews the data ... I want to get a degree from this university and then write a paper how epically amazing my costume designs are and how under-appreciated I am and my brilliance goes unnoticed.

DISCLAIMER: My suits really aren't that great, I love them but I know there is a pocket of maybe 2 or 3 people who will actually agree with my style sense. And by no means are my suits any measure of genius
  4. I remember a professor who bombed one of my papers in a first year elective because he disliked that my major was physics and felt despite how it seems a physicist cannot grasp psychology ... the department head stepped in and corrected the problem.

Mr. Myers appears to be a socially maladjusted individual lashing out ... unfortunately fate has given him a little misplaced credibility, but fortunately he is screwing it up.

Everyone in research must constantly challenge their ethics to see if their research crosses a line (for me this was easy testing the conductive properties of various crystals is obviously ethical), but in behavior patterns this can be a constant issue. One must know when it is too much, and just plain wrong ... how do I back this up?

Credible researchers use knowing test subjects, subjects they can see what background they have and can monitor other influences that may result in that behavior, also in a closed lab setting it can be accurately monitored how many people are not noticeably affected by the stimulus. In this case that was not maintained ... all this research proved is if you push a random person one or more may lash out ... did that need proving to anyone? Now why was this unethical, many people in game have crappy lives, hard lives, stressful lives ... there are kids who may be frequently abused in game, other people who may rely on this outlet. Pushing these people is NOT SAFE!!! it is dangerous and in an attempt to prove an idiotic point this person put people at risk because he applied a stimulus where it could be harmful all because of ignorance.

Now yes people on edge who may be playing could be prodded by people who are just jerks and don't know better and that's too bad. But this is a person who should be following ethics ignoring what damage he could be doing because of a single-minded and misguided goal.

City of Heroes is a game, one of many. It attracts a specific type of person, the type of person who finds it fun, this type of person covers every walk of life, and almost every mental state and it is a society within a society, please respect that, and respect that the people in this game are spending their time and hard earned money to enjoy themselves. Jerks come and go, but to have someone so misguided abusing things for their own selfish goals? I can deal with a jerk ... but a jerk trying to make me suffer to any degree so he can make money off a bad book?
  5. This is shocking. So he did something not specifically against the rules but no gain to him just hindered other players, and he is surprised?

If I am on a sidewalk and pour out a bunch of water and it soaks your shoes, you will get upset ... its generally not illegal but it is called being a [censored].

So he spent years doing something with the sole purpose of annoying people trying to have fun. There was no gain for him, but it hindered the fun other people are trying to have ... This is research? I want a research grant to go hit people in the face with a baseball bat then when they don't like me say random people get irrationally angry...

Someone should explain social interaction to this guy, if you do things people don't like, they won't like you. This is not research it is common sense, groups of friends don't do certain things to each other because that would make their friends not like them, these things may not be illegal but if you show consideration people like you more.

I pity the people who attend this school, their tuition paid this guy to try to interrupt peoples fun and he found that people don't like that ... when he is having a BBQ I will have to extinguish the fire because fire is dangerous ... he should like me then right?
  6. Please define the rules. Extreme Griefing is a term not everyone is aware of and teams should not be 'punished' because they don't.

i'm against keeping track of individual kills. It's a team effort. I think w/l is fine.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I agree it a team it not individual based.. Let each team keep track of their own kills..

    [/ QUOTE ]

I agree, in many cases support facilitates the kill but damage actually follows through, thus team effort
  8. Or could we get a recap here? I mean if it is a simple table and daily scores on another page but after finding the titan forum ... well the information was less than useful.

If you guys need help getting something organized I am sure Love the Turtles could help, it turns out we have a guy who may know something about web pages (Seeing as someone apparently pays him for it)

LOL good thing we are not retroactively taking back kills for why my own pet ended my fighting prematurely
  9. I hope everyone had a good Pie-Day
  10. Just a thought, if there is going to be a test server championship someone (Or some committee) should make sure everyone is playing by the same rules.
  11. I blame you for posting WAY TOO MUCH in this thread.

Work 70 hours and post the other 98
  12. I am happy this is going to come together, I just want to ensure the League I prep and practice for is the one I am in ... I am glad that is the case. Thanks
  13. [ QUOTE ]

The thing is, rules always favour a particular person/powerset/whichever. No TS makes SS/SJ a fine choice, Heal Decay on means people will shy away from "Heal" classes.

    [/ QUOTE ]

But there will be empaths even with heal decay is on. If I were on an FF my bubbles would all diminish in usefulness on my team, why wouldn't I make an empath who has 4 powers that would not diminish in any way?

You are right in generally every situation one class will be favoured, it is not totally fair but on joining the league every member looked at the rules and determined 'Yes this is fair enough' changing the rules means some members think it is no longer fair, so why not go with what everyone already agreed on. And that is what was done, no one can complain (without looking dumb) because they already agreed to these rules.

If there is going to be a change everyone should agree to it before it happens that way the new rules will be just as fair as the old ones int he eyes of the players. (And I was not the only one who felt heal decay should remain on, I was just the only one who said it here)

    EDIT: Well put JK

    [ QUOTE ]
Nah. Heal Decay will not be turned off. Everything stays as it stands.

    [/ QUOTE ]

So just cause one person has an issue with it, being that they don't have a healer or a toon that can heal, everyone else in the league gets screwed basically?

    [/ QUOTE ]

How is making someone adhere to rules they already agreed to screwing them?

    [ QUOTE ]

Even WITH Heal Decay turned off, you can STILL spike your given target from 1,600 HP to 0 in no time flat (assuming coordination, Build Up/Reds etc...). You see an Emp/Therm on the team, spike them or harass them. If they're on the run they can't buff/heal their teammates...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Heal Decay IS DR as it applies to heals and more healing oriented classes. I never said it was impossible to defeat people with heal decay off, but it is also not impossible to defeat people with DR off ... it's just harder.

If anyone can honestly explain to me how not changing the rules in their favor is unfair for everyone please let me know.
  15. I disagree with turning off heal decay it gives healing classes a clear advantage. If heal decay is able to be off I want DR off.

Otherwise set back the start date by a month or so so I can prep another toon to take advantage of this
  16. Well my global vet reward to all characters was affected, so should I not log in Any character?

    Anyone know?
  17. You aren't the only one. I sent a petition Saturday, got a preliminary response that it was escalated and that I should hear from someone soon ...

Seems to be a larger issue but haven't seen anything official
  18. The 60 month badge is not showing in my plaync acct greyed out or not, yet I can say it should have been now, the last one was granted March 12th and the monthly payment was processed that very day. The following payments were processed April 12th and May 12th, with another not due until June 27th due to my 15 days for referring a friend back.

I am 100% sure either it is delayed I am wanting to know if this is a bug or if I am indeed having to wait on a highly anticipated bonus because I referred someone to the game. I'd just as soon give up those days and get my badge.
  19. Is it against any rules to set up a betting pool? some people may be able to make some extra inf
  20. I recall seeing that there was a problem with vetran badges being rewarded but I can't find it now. Does anyone know if there is still a problem?

I ask because I was due to get my 60 month badge friday and it has not arrived, I am concerned because I referred a friend back to the game I am hoping I didn't lose it for 15 days until I have to pay again.

Can someone shed some light on this Customer Support was not very helpful and I am sitting a little steamed that it hurt me to refer someone back.

(I have already checked all my Credit Card statements for 6 month to see no lapse and for those times the vet badges were on the date my card got charged)
  21. Well there are some bunnies that would likely kill you before you got them into a crock pot so watch yourself
