Their rendition of FireBrandi is probably the best one I've seen so far. Well now he has finnished Kim Paler and she looks ready to kill.

He originally started with a different pose, but after seeing the vid of her I put on youtube he changed it to this.

    G.N.O.M.E. Base

    Interview with Mister Blue (in-character!)

    Q) Who is your base designer and who are your supergroup leaders?

    A) That would be me, Mister Blue. Endrick and St. Inger, 2 of the other founding mages of G.N.O.M.E., have helped from time to time, and I’ve also taken ideas given by our other leading wizards: Ketzel Windsong, the Halloween Witch, Uncle Cat, Ouroona, and even the impish Nipiti Splix.

    Q) What server is your base on?

    A) Freedom. Should bases ever gain the ability to change dimensions however, there may be a move in our future (simply because Freedom has overpopulation issues from time to time).

    Q) When was your supergroup established?

    A) January 3rd, 2005, in defense against evil arcana.

    Q) What is the approximate value of your base?

    A) Roughly 6.5 million.

    Q) How much time do you spend working on your base?

    A) I tend to spend just a few minutes on it when I have a new idea or see something small I want to change. The bulk of the G.N.O.M.E. Hall was built in big bursts of several hours at key points when our circumstances changed (e.g. on the initial building day, on the days when we could afford an upgrade in power, control, or base size, and of course the day the city generously gave us that large boost in prestige and cut building costs).

    Q) How much time have you invested in your base so far?

    A) Honestly, not that much. The main thing I wanted to accomplish was to get the feel of it right. We are a group of mystics, sorcerers, witches and wizards, and the Hall had to reflect that. Also, being well practiced in illusion magic, I felt that a good illusion of the entry room, disguising the nature and location of the true Hall would be pertinent. Ergo, the entry room appears to be a dentist’s reception area.

    Q) What is your favorite base item? Least favorite?

    A) For its combination of design and function, I’d have to say the arcane personal storage vault is my favorite. It allows the G.N.O.M.E. Hall to store magical artifacts securely; unlike, say, the poor folks over at M.A.G.I. (I’m sure Azuria tries her best, but they have a bad tendency to “lose” things over there). My least favorite? Well, the standard bookshelves are a bit small and generic for my taste.

    Q) What is your favorite thing about base editing? Least favorite?

    A) I like being able to set the lighting color to represent the aura of the room. For instance, the Power Room glows deep blue with the mystic energy generated there, while the Control Room is filled with the more purple manipulative type magic, and the healing magic in the Recovery Room is naturally green. The Invention Room is lit using all of the colors of the spectrum, representing the mix off all the types of magic that go into the creations there. My least favorite aspect would be the doorways. You have less control over their look, particularly the lower wall design, which seems to end where they begin.

    Q) If you could give just one piece of advice to a new base editor, what would it be?

    A) Never let an imp design your base! Seriously, I would say don’t be afraid to spend a lot of time and resources on your first few rooms. Teleporters and other useful items will come as your team’s prestige grows, but having the right look and feel for your base from the start, that fits the theme or attitude of your group, can be very rewarding. I spent quite a bit at the start to get the look I wanted for the main hall right, and now every time I go back it feels like I’ve come home.

Aus der Küche von Barron (From Barron's Kitchen)

    Loaded… LOADED! Baked Potato

This one is ideal for a charcoal grill. 'Tis the season! Well, sort of.

    Ingredients:

(This week's ingredient list will be full of variables)
[*]1 very large Potato[*]Butter[*]Salt/sea salt[*]Pepper[*]Your favorite spices[*]Sliced Mushrooms (optional)[*]Bacon Bits (optional)[*]Cheese - try using a Colby Jack, or another cheese with a light, white color due to the "melty" factor (optional)[*]Shredded meat, chicken, beef, or pork as a source of protein (optional)[*]Sliced Bell Peppers (optional) [*]Sliced Onions (optional)
Preparation:

Go put some briquettes on the grill and light 'em up!

      Still got yer eyebrows?

      Good, here we go...

Cut potato in half longways, and scoop out most of the inside. Be sure to leave about 1/2 inch of meat in there, or else you won't have any structure to this treat.

Butter the inside of the two halves liberally, salt and pepper, and add your favorite spices as well.
Any of the listed ingredients, and any of your own devices, are to be put into both halves to just over the brim of your tater bowls. It's always a good idea to do a gentle mixing of your filler in a bowl to give yourself an even effect.

Once you have your goodies on the inside, carefully put both halves back together, making sure you don't spill anything - or much of anything lol. Wrap your delight up in some heavy-duty foil to secure the process. I would suggest using about 14-16 inches of a good wide foil, due to the fact that you will be putting this on your coals.

By this time, your grill should be good and hot. Go ahead and cook some other stuff at the same time, this dish doesn't have to be the main course. You could surely use some smaller potatoes, and feed the whole family on some steak and taters - nom nom nom…. In any case, slap your potato on the coals, and be sure to have a separate pair of tongs to turn it/them. About an hour should do, maybe longer depending on your cooking style. Me personally, I use the low and slow method, makes for a good time with family around the grill.

Now that yer taters are done, "Just whack and unwrap!"

    Ummmmm... no.

Be careful to unwrap this, 'cuz you don't know exactly how it is sitting. Usually, it will have cooked itself almost back into a whole, but not always, so don't spill it on your lap.

    Dig in.

This should serve as a one-course meal, or if you have other things in mind, it will surely do for a nice side dish.

    Happy scarfin!

    Fan Fiction Spotlight

    Autumn Moon

Presented in its entirety due to small size, though it's not lacking in quality!

The short girl sat on the end of the row in the large school gym. She was only half listening to the current speaker. He was a representative of the M.A.G.I. group, speaking mainly to the students who received their powers or looks from some sort of magic source. As he was closing his speech, he offered to meet with anyone who felt they could benefit from his group for a free assessment.

The principle returned to the podium and introduced the next speaker. "It is now my pleasure to bring up an alumni of this very school, Autumn Saunders.

The short girl fought back some butterflies as she stood and made her way up to the stage. Even as a college sophomore, her small frame could have passed for any senior in the audience. She blended in well up to this point with her black button down shirt and black pleated skirt with the gray stripe. Her friends said it matched her jet-black hair, but it matched more than just that.

She walked over to the podium, shaking hands with the principle before she turned to address the fifty or so students and their parents.

"Hello, My name is Autumn, and I am a registered hero. I was asked to speak to you today not only about being a hero, but a student as well. I'd like to start by telling you how I found out about my own powers, then a little about balancing what I can do with being a college sophomore. Then I'll share a few words from my grandmother that helped me through some tough times." She took a breath and steadied her voice.

"Four years ago, when I was a student here, I was heading home late from a friend's house. I was approached by some guys and one of them pushed me down. I was scared and tried to get away. But then as they surrounded me, my arm started to tingle." She raised her right arm up slowly as she continued, "As the one who pushed me got closer, I tried to push him away and suddenly-" She paused and thrust her arm, palm facing up and fingers spread wide. The crowd gasped as inky darkness shot out in a thick cylinder-shaped cloud. As it traveled well over the heads of the group, it slowly faded and disappeared after a few seconds of flight.

There were some excited murmurs from the crowd as they recovered from the unexpected display.

"I was able to scare them off," she continued once they returned their attention. "But just as I surprised all of you, imagine my surprise at doing that. I hope the discovery of your own talents or powers was not as bad as mine. However, regardless of how you found out, I bet you asked yourself the same questions I did at some point. Does this make me a hero? Do I have to be a hero? And do I really need to look like my underwear is on the outside?"

She paused as a few chuckled at the lame joke.

"The fact is, most heroes do other things in their 'normal' life." She made little finger quotes around the word, as if anything was normal in these kids lives' right now. "I am a college student that just likes to use what I can do to help people. I don't go out looking to stop crime, and I don't think twice about calling the PPD if it's something I can't handle."

She could see herself reflected back on some of the faces. That uncertain look they got when all their plans for life just changed. How many of them are struggling as she had? She took a breath and pushed those thoughts aside.

"I would like to leave you with something my grandmother told me. 'You are on the edge of your life. Before you are the paths that you have to choose. It won't be easy, as most changes in life are not. But the only wrong choice is to not make a choice.' A couple days after that I was down at city hall talking about my options with a M.A.G.I. rep. I believe I have these powers for a reason, and I believe the same for all of you. I would encourage you to speak to one of the representatives, talk it over with your family, and even talk it over with yourself. The choice is yours. Thank you."

The people clapped as she returned to her seat. After the closing remarks she stayed around to speak to a few students and parents. It was from one of these students, a young girl with stark white hair, that she got another quote: You don't always have to go out and fight to be a hero.

    Different Ways to Play

    "The Quasi Archetypes"

City of Heroes and Villains has so many choices when it comes to power set combinations. While each AT has a traditional way of being played, over the years people have developed terms to describe different play styles within the AT's. The following is a list of some of the "Quasi Archetypes" with COX.

If you haven't tried playing a character like the ones described below, I recommend giving it a go. They can give you a fresh and unique perspective on COX and are full of rich gaming opportunities.

    Scranker

A Scranker is a member of the tanker AT who has focused on increasing their damage output at the expense of their defense. Scrankers play well solo and as tanks on small teams, but may not be up to the task of tanking some of the toughest AV's in the game. Scranker also applies to Scrappers who maximize their defenses and act as Tanks for teams.

Example: A fire/super strength tank. Fire armor has weaker defenses than some other armor sets, but this is compensated for by having a better offense. Key powers may be Knock Out Blow, Foot Stomp, Rage, Burn, and Fiery Aura.

"Workers Champion, a Fire/Super Strength Scranker in action"

    TankTroller

A TankTroller is a member of the Tanker AT who focuses on control and defense over offense. TankTrollers make great team members, but may have a harder time soloing without high damage output.

Example: A Dark Armor/Ice Melee tank. Dark Armor has some neat control powers and Ice Melee, while low damage, has some good control tools. Key powers may be Oppressive Gloom, Cloak of Fear, Ice Patch, and Freezing Touch.

    Blapper

A Blapper is a member of the Blaster AT who has focused more on Melee attacks than most Blasters do. The Blapper can be a huge damage dealer in skilled hands, but has a low margin for error.

Example: A Sonic/Electric Blaster. Sonic Blast has some powers that make the Blappers life safer and the –resistance component of sonic attacks makes the Melee attacks even more devastating. Key powers may be Build Up, Aim, Sirens Song, Screech, Havoc Punch, and Shocking Grasp.

    TankerMind

A TankerMind is a member of the Master Mind AT who focuses on using bodyguard mode to tank in combat. TankerMinds have a reputation for soloing very hard encounters, and from what I've seen, a well-played TankerMind is a wonder to behold.

Example: Robots/Force Field. Bubbles and high defense make your minions more survivable, and therefore make you a better TankerMind. Key Powers may be all your bubbles and a way to draw agro, probably from the presence pool.

    Offender

An Offender is a member of the Defender AT who takes numerous powers from their secondary and actively contributes damage to their team. Offenders, if played well, can contribute almost as well with their primary as non-attacking defenders do, and also pour additional damage on top to help the team.

Example: A Radiation/Radiation Defender. Radiation Emission has some of the best debuffs in the game, but two of these are toggles. Once toggles are in place, you can blast away merrily and all your attacks make it easier for the team to hit. Key powers may be Radiation Emission, Enervating Field, Accelerate Metabolism, Cosmic Burst, and Irradiate.

    BlastTroller

A BlastTroller is a Blaster who has a focus in using mez effects on their target while causing damage. A BlastTroller may have a slightly lower damage output than some Blasters, but trades damage for control.

Example: An Ice/Ice Blaster. Focuses on using the various holds available in this combo along with a smattering of slows and other mezzes. Key Powers may be Freeze Ray, Bitter Freeze Ray, Ice Patch, Freezing Touch, Shiver, and Frozen Aura.

    Huntsman

A Huntsman is a soldier of Arachnos who, once reaching level 24, choose to keep the vast majority of powers from the basic Arachnos soldier skill tree. Some Huntsmen may take a few bane powers such as bane armor and surveillance, but the focus is on using the Assault Rifle as the main weapon instead of the Bane Mace or the Crab Backpack.

    ScrapTroller

This is a Controller that combines Pool attacks and Containment to create a hand-to-hand fighter with lots of control powers.

Example: An Illusion/Rad Controller uses Radiant Aura, AM, Radiation Infection, and Enervating Field for defenses while using Blind and Deceive to prevent counter attack, plus give additional damage in form of "pets." Takes Air Superiority as main melee attack, along with Spectral Wounds, Blind, and additional Pool attacks such as Boxing or Jump Kick for more damage.

    Blastermind

A Mastermind that uses its own personal attacks, while still taking and slotting pets (to distinguish it from the Petless Mastermind). Not quite as powerful a concept past level 32, but still workable.

Example: A Thugs/Pain Mastermind who takes all attacks from his Primary and uses the personal damage boosts from Pain to raise his damage. May skip Tier 1 of his pets until getting to level 30.

    The People On...Villains

My dear readers, you know I am all about the fairness, and you know that I look on the labels of "hero" and "villain" with some skepticism. But I believe I have interviewed someone who knows a lot more than most about the whole hero and villain dichotomy: Soul Train. Yes, dear readers, I have interviewed the famed hero of the city. If you don't know who she is, you haven't been in Paragon long. Granted she is somewhat retired with a child to care for, but her name still rings in the halls of the Paragon Greats. I asked our esteemed heroine some very important questions that I think you will all want to know the answer to:

Soul Train Wallpaper by John Becaro

Scoop Man: Excuse me! Uh, I hate to bother you, but I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions?

Soul Train: Why, sure thing, sugah! Always happy to talk to th' press.

SM: Thank you very much. I'm not sure if you read the paper but I've been doing some articles recently on the less popular crowd of the Rogue Isles: The "villains." Lately, I've been lead to believe that there are different classes of villains. Different meaning that their motivation or crimes are not of the same, such as for personal gain or world domination. Do you find that to be true?

ST: Oh, definitely. You got your sadistic sickos, just out for another thrill. They don't care who it is they take on next, they just want blood an' gore an' guts and veins in they teeth.

Then, you got your "better world" idealists with too much power and no one to hold them back. You know the type. "End justifies the means" an' all that. I've met a few, and sometimes it shames me to think, I agree with what they want to accomplish... just the way they go about accomplishin' things is totally wrong.

And then there's some fellow who got laid off and wants to feed his kids. He's got some superpower, or a suit or a weapon... and his back's up against the wall. Often times, these folks can be held back from villainy just by a helping hand at the right time. Won't say who... but a few of the folks I've apprehended never went to the Zig, instead I sent them to the mission down the street, or set them up with an interview or whatnot.

Then you got the punks. They aren't really 'villains' with some big plan or motive, they just want to appear 'gangsta' in front of their friends.

SM: Out of curiosity, what would you consider Arachnos?

ST: Arachnos ... is military rule spiraled out of control. Social Darwinism, fascism, whatever you want to call it... you have a crazed megalomaniac at the helm, and everyone under him lickin' his boots an' seein' if they can stab each other in th' back. Chaos. Real hard to see any good come out of that system, though I've been told there's some honorable people in the Rogues.

The problem is, if Recluse gets taken out... someone else will just ascend to the throne and impose their own version... or they'll get offed by the NEXT contender. Don't really know what could be done to steer all that back to something ... decent, best we can do is kick they booty any time they show up 'round here, sugah. Send them back to their island enclave with a few good-sized bruises.

SM: You said you've heard of honorable people there in the Isles. What constitutes as honor in criminals, in your mind.

ST: Well, remember that 'criminal' is defined as 'someone who commits crimes'. Crimes are defined as breaking laws, right?

If publishin' a paper were made a crime... you'd be workin' for a criminal right now, see?

But, that's just semantics. What I mean by 'honorable PEOPLE in th' Rogues' is this: Whatever their reason fo' bein' there, they hold to their ethics, they moral code, you know? Take this "Daisy Chain" person. She's on th' books as one of the nastiest covert espionage/sabotage/assassin types out there. But, she doesn't kill indiscriminately, not that I've read. She goes out of her way to minimize loss of human life, or even collateral damage. Now, you could argue that someone who makes a living as a high-paid spy isn't exactly GOOD... but when someone has concern over your well-being even when you're in their way... that's honorable.

Soul Train rubs her jaw. An' yah, I've run up against the girl. She kicks like a mule. She coulda killed me, easy. Instead I got karate-chopped and woke up in the Warburg infirmary with one bruise. One. That tells a body somethin'.

SM: So it's the definition of their crime that makes them a criminal? Would you say it's society's fault, or perhaps the system's?

ST: No, no, and no. Everyone has a choice to either obey the law, or not. If they exist in a society, live under a system, then they either conform, or not.

And I need to get somethin' straight with you, sugah. If I catch y'all askin' me leadin' questions like that again, I'mma not answer 'em. One thing I can't stand is political or sociological sophism, especially from th' press. It's unethical. We clear?

SM: Hey, fine by me. I just thought that was what you were saying. Nothing leading about it. Anyway, as far as "villains" go would you say that they are necessary? There has been some references by my readers that they balance out the universe in a sort of "Yin and Yang" kinda way.

ST: I don't think villains are 'necessary'. I think they are ... inevitable?

After all, we are talking about human nature here... and apparently meta abilities don't just happen to the... good folk of Paragon.

As fo' balance... that balance has always existed, since ancient times. Good vs. Evil, Right vs. Wrong. Only thing's changed is the way we go about th' conflict, yeah?

SM: I suppose so, yeah. Thank you for talking with me. This will really help my readers in understanding things a little better, I hope.

    ST: I hope so.

I wasn't too pedantic, was I? I fo'get sometimes, I'm not doin' th' lecture circuit much at all these days.

SM: You were great. Thanks again.

Well, what did I tell you? This stuff is pretty powerful, right? The idea that villains could possibly be the eventual outcome of the existence of heroes through pure nature somewhat frightens me. What if this cycle can never be broken? What if the heroes are the ones who actually perpetuate the cycle in the first place? Well, we shall have to see when I go to the Rogue Isles, now won't we?

    In The Scoop

Another Monday morning, and I arrive at my office all bright eyed and bushy tailed. I peer out my window at Lord Recluse Plaza where it is raining, and toxic tarantulas, widows, and other followers of Lord Recluse are walking about. I see a few of the baby spiders chasing each other and skirmishing as they zip around the plaza and through the crowd. "I wonder where their momma is at." I think to myself as I fill my coffee mug up with some pretty strong Ghost Widow brand of coffee.

I turn around just as the mail drops into my drop box. I eagerly nab my mail and sit down at my desk with my tushy resting on top of the donut I ended up getting over the weekend. I thought about this past Friday night on my way home from the office and how I had suffered such a severe cheek cramp from sitting on my office chair all day, that as I walked to my front door I felt like someone had literally kicked me in the booty! So now that I am comfy, sorta, I sift through the mail and find nothing worth reading. So off to the forums I go to see what the boardsters are up to.

I start wandering through the threads and view some really nice pieces. Then I stumble across Thornster's piece called "Thor's Assassin." As I closely look at the piece, I whisper to myself "'Tis a fascinating piece." So, I decide to reach out to Thornster to try to snag him for my next article. I quickly write out a letter to him...

"G'morning, Thornster! I was wandering through the forums and tripped over your collaborated piece named 'Thor's Assassin'. What an awesome piece! I would enjoy learning more about it! In fact, I am sure our readers would really enjoy learning more about that particular piece and some of your other pieces as well!

Please contact me if you are interested in being featured in The City Scoop. I'd love to write an article about you!

    Thank you!

    ~*~VexXxa~*~"

And with that done, I address the envelope, stuff my letter inside of it and pull out my spongy bottle to wet the flap. I giggle to myself "Not going to taste that yucky flap this time!" I seal the envelope and drop it into the mail drop. I then spend the rest of my day stealthing through the threads of the boardsters, admiring the talent that I see all woven together into one huge community of artists, collectors, and admirers.

Tuesday morning has finally arrived and after getting myself a cup o' joe, I nab my mail from the drop box and sit my little tushy onto the donut pillow acting as a tushy cushion for my chair. I wiggle my tushy to the left, and then to the right but still can't get comfortable. I mumble to myself "After work, I must get a replacement for this horrid chair! Donuts are definitely not my style!" So, I pulled my feet up and sat Indian style, which seemed to be the most comfortable position.

I sort through my mail and find a reply back from Thornster. "These artists are fantastic with their quick responses!" I think to myself as I open the envelope. Thornster's letter reads "Thank you VexXxa for wanting to feature me in your article. I currently live in Paragon Island, so I won't have a problem meeting you at Pocket D. Tonight would be a good time for me since I will be traveling near the club. I'll see you there.

    Thornster "

"YEA! I get to nab the scoop on Thornster! I cannot wait to ask him more about that Thor's Assassin piece!" I exclaim with excitement. I put on my coat and grab my camera as I dart out the door! "OH NO! The RAIN! I forgot about the RAIN!" I shout out as I run for the train station knowing that I am going to look like a drowned rat by the time I get to Pocket D.

As I step off the train, I see that there is a break in the rain, so I shuffle my little feet as fast as I can to get to the club before the rain drenches me some more. Fortunately, I have long hair that doesn't mind the rain. It just becomes very wavy, so I run my fingers through my tresses to spruce it up a bit and enter the club. As I wander through the crowd of toons yet again, I don't see Thornster anywhere. Then suddenly I spot him! He's up on the dance floor with the DJ reading a newspaper! As I approach him, I see that he is reading The City Scoop. I say as I smirk, "You must be Thornster." With a big smile, he replies. "Why yes I am. And by the looks of you, you must be a drenched VexXxa. Nice to meet you!" We both laugh as Thornster folds up his newspaper and walks with me to the upstairs bar. We settle into the booth nearest the monkey cage, where it is quiet since the Monkey fights are on hiatus for the evening and everyone is out on the dance floor or elsewhere in the club.

I order a Ghost Widow Special this time, which is similar to a Kamikaze but much stronger. Thornster just ordered a pitcher of Manticore beer. As we chatted, Thornster told me that he has lived in Paragon for 53 months and currently resides in a nice English style brownstone in the City of Croatoa. Thornster tells me how much he loves the ambiance there and all the ghosts and whatnots that wander through the city. "Sounds like my kind of city!" I say with a smile.

"Just out of curiosity, at about what age did you first realize you had artistic talents?" I ask Thornster as he takes a big gulp from his mug. He replies, "Well, the interest has always been there ... but I would say my working with a vectorial application on downtimes at my first job is what really gave me the impression I might be able to do something worthwhile.

Thornster goes on with talking about his early days. "My first things were more maps and stuff for PnP RGP games ... then I tried stuff like THIS as the portrait for my PnP games. But, CoX is a great artistic inspiration and one day someone asked for their sketch to be colored ... so I gave it a try and Pai Hu Shi was my first CoX colors.

It all sounds fascinating to me. "So what type of canvas were your early pieces created on?" I ask. Thornster replies with a grin, "Most probably either Photoshop or Corel Paint since those are the only 2 painting tools I use.

" Thornster, out of all the different pieces you have created and worked on, which is your most favorite?" I sit with anticipation of his answer. He replies with a big smile "Not too long ago I would have told you that my favorite piece was my colors of an imagesbyalex piece of Twins I played with a friend of mine BBB Twins . But since then I have found things I would have done differently that could have made it better. Now I would have to say that the piece worked on that featured the famous Thor's Assassin would be my new favorite Thor's Assassin ... it was a great COLLABORATION. TA had a sketch by Graver that got inked by Taclobanon, all that on a night where I felt like coloring and I really like how it turned out." I exclaim to Thornster, "I saw that piece and I totally loved it! That piece inspired me to want to write about you! Thor's Assassin was beautifully done!"

I go on to ask Thornster, "Do you have any up and coming pieces waiting in the wings for us to be looking for in the near future?" Thornster thinks for a moment and then replies, "I usually work intensely on a piece or I'm not working on any... so I rarely have next pieces. I usually get inspired then work until I'm done ... but, if I were to name one I have an INK done for a sketch by imagesbyalex and its waiting for me to find a new technique to try or something so I throw myself into the colors of it."

"So tell me Thornster, where do you get your creative inspiration? I ask with curiosity. Thornster replies with a smirk "I'm still trying my hand at drawing ... but I am too hard a critic and I don't practice enough so ... other artists' sketches are one of my inspirations. I like reading tutorials so ... sometimes after reading one I just want to try it out and other times it's just because I feel like coloring."

I tell Thornster "I would really like our readers to have the opportunity to see more of your work, are there any links that people can go to see more?" Thornster says, "People can see more of my work at http://thornster.deviantart.com/ and under the art, cover, and comic cover of my character site icewing.

"How about commissions?" I say to Thornster and continue with a smile, "I'm sure that many of our readers would love a commissioned piece done by you." Thornster grins as he replies "I prefer working when I feel like it rather than when I have to... so the best way to make sure no one is disappointed because they are waiting after their commission is to not take any."

"Well Thornster, that pretty much does it. Is there anything else you wish to add?" Thornster thinks for a moment and then says, "Well I am more of an art appreciator that decides to color once in a while ... so I have a lot of pieces made by other artist and a few colored by me. One fun fact in my colorings though is that these two Nyghtingale by Destiny Knight and Nyghtingale2 by Destiny Knight were colored in the same week. I learned a lot that week and that really inspired me to continue.

Thornster and I finish off the last of our drinks and I express to him my appreciation for his meeting with me for this interview. "Thank you so very much Thornster for meeting with me and for allowing me to feature you in The City Scoop. I know our readers will enjoy learning more about you." Thornster smiles big and as we shake hands, he says "Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of the Scoop!" With that, Thornster walks out onto the dance floor where I lose sight of him in the vast crowd of dancing toons. I then return to my office to get started on my scoop of Thornster.

    Coven of the Moon

    Interview with Photon Ranger

    Q) What is the name of your group and what made you choose it?

    A) Coven of the Moon. I didn’t choose it. The former leader was fond of mystical titles and it struck his fancy.

    Q) What is your base designer(s) name?

    A) Photon Ranger. I'm the main base designer.

    Q) What server is your base on?

    A) Freedom Server.

    Q) When was your super/villain group established?

    A) About 20 months ago.

    Q) What is the approximate value of your base?

    A) Over 40 million, and climbing every day.

    Q) How much time have you/your designer(s) invested in your base since you started building?

    A) Around 100 hours, and also growing every day.

    Q) What is your/your designer(s) favorite base item? Least favorite?

    A) My favorite base item would have to be the Floor Safe. It makes a great floor for midlevel floating and has a nice texture to it. My least favorite base item would have to be any item that doesn’t have a bottom. It irks me to look up and see through to the next level in a base. Major pet peeve.

    Q) What is your/your designer(s) favorite thing about base editing? Least favorite?

    A) My Favorite thing about base editing would be the ability to merge items and over lap. The removal of raid-pathing has opened the doors for some super creativity. My Least favorite thing about base editing would be the frequent crashes. I swear I haven’t been able to go more than 45 minutes - ever - without a crash.

    Q) Did you get your inspiration from anyone specific or was it right from your imagination?

    A) In the deep dark hole that is my mind there are worlds that have been born, died, and been reborn. There aren’t enough objects or patterns to cover where my mind wants to go!

    Q) If you/your designer(s) could give just one piece of advice to a new base editor, what would it be and why?

    A) Don’t be limited to what others have done. Let your mind run free and go for it. Sometimes the strangest stuff turns out to be the coolest.

    In the Scoop with Powerforge

'Tiz Monday and I am feeling pretty good about having completed my first article for The City Scoop. I walk into my dark office and flip on the dim lights. "Hmmm…no mail in the drop." I think to myself as I walk over to my desk and set my newspaper down, and then place my coat and briefcase by the window that overlooks the Lord Recluse Plaza. I turn on my coffeepot and settle into my under stuffed chair. "One of these days, I need to replace this uncomfortable chair before I need to use a donut cushion for my tushie to sit on." I grumble to myself.

I sit in my chair with one leg tucked under my thigh and start to read through The City threads. As I glance through post after post, I see one that grabs my attention. I go into the thread and find Powerforge sharing some of his art pieces with the artists and admirers that prowl these threads. "WOW! What interesting artwork! I really need to feature this artist in my column!" I continue to sift through the posts and I check out all the links. I find myself totally fascinated with his work. Powerforge seems to do most of his work in tiers, with the background, foreground and front images all shot in separate areas, then combined into one piece with some extra gfx to make it look totally awesome! "I must get the scoop on this artist!" I say with excitement!

    I begin my letter...

" 'ello Powerforge. My name is VexXxa and I am the Art Correspondent for The City Scoop. I was snooping through the boards and sifting through the threads when I suddenly stopped in my tracks. I saw one of your awesome pieces of work! I would very much like to feature you in one of my articles. Please let me know as soon as possible. I’d like to get you featured in the next issue. Thank you.

    ~*~VexXxa~*~"

I neatly fold my letter, stuff it into an envelope, lick the flap "Yuck! I did it again!" I seal and address the envelope. Into the mail drop it goes. Time to start doing some research on this Powerforge. So far, I really like his work! Back to the boards and into the threads I go!

Tuesday has arrived and I am back in my office sitting in my rough chair. The mail drops into my mail drop… "Mail! I’ve got mail!" I leap up with excitement. "I so hope I have a reply back from Powerforge! I say under my breath. "Ohhhh yes! Here it is! I mutter as I rip into the envelope. Powerforge has sent me numerous pictures. A few are from his early days as an artist and the rest are current day. "Awesomeness!" I whisper to myself. This interview is going to be fantastic and I am once again chomping on the bit just raring to meet with Powerforge to conduct my interview.

Once again, I will attempt to meet with the star of my article at Pocket D amongst all the partygoers, dancers, and great club music! So, with my camera on my shoulder, and pen and pad in tow, I am off to meet with Powerforge.

I arrived a tad early, which isn’t surprising since I am very excited to be meeting with Powerforge in person. I slink through the crowd of people that are gathered on the dance floor. Finally, I made it to the meeting spot in one piece. As I was about to look across the dance floor, I feel a tap on my left shoulder. I quickly turn around expecting to see Powerforge, but it wasn’t him. It was a waitress asking me if I wanted a drink. "Yes, I would love a Duck Fart, please." The waitress giggles and says, "Are you serious?" I laugh, "Totally serious. Ask your bartender, I’m sure there won’t be a problem mixing one up for me." Just then, I felt a tap on my right shoulder. I turn, and - lo and behold! - it is the star of my article, Powerforge! We shake hands, as I introduce myself "I am so excited to be meeting you in person, Powerforge! I am VexXxa." Powerforge smiles brightly, "So very nice to meet you, VexXxa! I am quite surprised and honored that you would be interested in my work. After all, it is nothing compared to what other people have created." Oh, a humble artist, he is. Refreshingly, a rare trait for an artist to have.

Powerforge and I work our way through the crowd of dancing toons to a table in the upstairs bar away from all the fun. My waitress appears and places my Duck Fart drink on the table. Powerforge orders a Statesman’s special from the waitress who promptly brings him one. I say to Powerforge "You know, art comes any many forms and canvases. I was drawn to yours because I had not seen a form done quite like yours. The way you explain how you created your final piece is really fantastic!" Powerforge smiles shyly and seems not to be quite sure how to handle the compliment. Modesty is a great quality for an artist to have, although most do not have that quality. "So, tell me. When did your creative talents come to light?" I ask Powerforge. He smiles as he thinks back to his childhood "When I was about five or so I guess. I started tracing Superhero figures and redesigning the costumes. I've been playing CoH for over 30 years I guess." We both laugh as I say "30 years? I do believe that would make you older than Statesman!"

One of Powerforge's early pieces was NORIKO 2003. "This one features a character from Unreal Tournament 2003. I am also the author of the skin in the picture. The entire toon's look was created and drawn in Photoshop by myself. A bit like creating a costume in CoH except it's all hand drawn in PS and the game is sort of hacked to apply it to a standard model. I put these skins up for download along with several others. It was the biggest compliment to log onto a public death match and see a skin I created being played by a stranger. This was really where I learned to use Photoshop. Creating skins for UT2003." As Powerforge talks about his Noriko piece, he becomes quite animated and expressive. His eyes become distant as though he has drifted off into another zone.

Powerforge continues with a big smile: STONESHIVER! "This was my paladin in WoW. WoW was the very first MMO I ever tried. While I did play it for 14 months, eventually I grew tired of it and tried CoH, which I am still playing 3 years later. I love Super heroes! If I had to pick one that is my favorite it would still be Superman. When I was a kid I loved him for what he could do, but as an adult now I love him for what he doesn't do. It's trés cool to hate on the goody-goody heroes and love the Wolverines and Rorshachs but in the end, I want my heroes good. In fact, I want them better than myself. If I had superpowers, I am sure I would not be as noble as Superman. The first rapist, murderer, or pedophile I encountered would most likely fall down dead with heat vision burn holes through his brain. That's why I like Supes. He's not just physically powerful. He's morally powerful as well. He's a hero!"

As I watch Powerforge's expressions as he talks about his creations, I can see that he is quite passionate about his work and the super heroes he loves! "So out of all of the many pieces you have created, which piece is your most favorite of them all?" With a big smile, Powerforge replies, "Well, the piece I am most proud of is MR. AWESOME. It's not really representative of what I normally do though. I drew the image of Mr. Awesome in several stages and posted the progress on the forums over a year ago in stages. Letting people figure out who it was as the image developed. It's not the type of work I normally do though as it's so time consuming. One nice thing about using screenshots is that it takes a lot less time to finish. I have a wife, three kids, 3 cats, a wolf hybrid, a hamster, and a full time job... spare time is a rarity at my house."

A few of Powerforge's favorite pieces are MR. GRAVES ("I like this one for the 3 ghostly images of the character in the background."), and KATANATECH ("This one just worked out well all around I think."). One of his earliest pieces for "The City of" was ARCHLIGHT.

Bringing the interview to a close, I ask, "Powerforge, you have been living and working in Paragon City for 36 months now, and the artists and boardsters have really enjoyed your pieces that you have shared in the forums. Do you do any commissions for people who may want one of their toons to be one of your subjects?" Sadly, Powerforge replies "Sorry, no. Too busy, plus I really need to feel the desire to do the piece and that usually means a personal attachment to the subject matter." However, if anyone would like to view Powerforge's work, he has a thread in the forums in which he posts his pieces HERE.

"Well, Powerforge, I do believe this covers everything for our interview. I thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk with me about your artistic talent and your use of technology to bring to life a different aspect of art to the boards and the readers of The City Scoop." I say as we both stand up and shake hands. "Thank you for including me in your article. I enjoyed sharing with you and your readers my story." And with that, I watch as Powerforge fades into the crowd of clubbers.

Die Kuche von Barron (Barron's Kitchen)

    Brats... (Shift + Awesome)

    Ingredients:

Your favorite Brats - frozen or fresh. Italian Sausages work as well.

1 Large Vidalia Onion (or Sweet Onion).

    2 Green Bell Peppers.

    2 Red Bell Peppers.

    2 Cans Beer (or Non-Alcoholic Beer... >.>).

    Preparation:

Chop Onion and Bell Peppers into long strips - similar to stir fry (about 1/4" to 7/16" wide).

Test Beer to make sure it works... as in flavor...

Non-Alcoholic Beer is purely for flavor, and even if it does contain alcohol, this will evaporate within minutes. So no worries on drunken Peppers.

Place chopped Onions and Bell Peppers into a Baking Pan or Meatloaf Dish (Just be sure that the Pan or Dish is metal).

    Pour Beer in.

Now this is primarily a grilling operation, but if no Grill is available, then an Oven works just as well.

I'll go over both sides of it just to be sure.

    Grilling Directions:

Preheat Grill to a medium/medium high heat.

    Place Pepper Pan onto Grill.

Arrange your Brats/Sausages for perfect cookin'.

Be sure to turn the Brats/Sausages frequently (WITH TONGS!) so they don't burn.

As the Brats/Sausages finish cooking up, place them into the Pepper Pan, submerging the Brats/Sausages in your awesome sauce of grillin' luv.

After the first of the Brats/Sausages goes in, place a sheet of tinfoil over the Pan. This will help to keep the Brats/Sausages from drying out if they decide to float.

Mind you, if cooking on a Grill, the links won't cook at the same rate, so it will be a one by one, or one by two dunk in the pepper pan.

After all Brats/Sausages are grilled to goodness, they should have a decent 10 to 15 minutes in the bath of brew to help draw some flavor in.

Once the time has elapsed, grab one of the Brats/Sausages, slap on a bun, dress with a few Peppers and Onions, and mebbe some tasty Mustard.. yummm!

    Oven Directions:

Preheat Broiler, and place Pepper Pan on the bottom rack... way down low plz (especially for electric ovens), this is just to warm the Pepper Pan up.

Place Brats/Sausages on Broiler Pan, and slide 'em under the heat. Every couple of minutes, drag them back out to turn.

Repeat this until the Brats/Sausages are nicely done all around, and then place them in the Pepper Pan. Once in the Pan, shut the Broiler, and crank your oven to about 300 Degrees Fahrenheit, and cover with tinfoil.

Give them about 10 to 15 minutes of marinadin' and stewin'.

Follow serving directions for grillin' operations.

If just a Brat or two isn't enough to satisfy your appetite, add a side or two, maybe some nummy coleslaw, tater salad, or whatever you choose.

    Happy Scarfin'!

    The Redeemers

The days after Grendel's defeat were rather routine. While anybody who'd been injured in the conflict recuperated, the rest were placed into new teams and resumed patrols. They restricted themselves to working in Skyway City and Steel Canyon for the most part, but a few loners took up brief patrols through Independence Port and Talos Island. They left Atlas Park, Galaxy City, and Kings Row to the newbies.

As the days went by, Garm continued to feel his body growing weaker. He was able to maintain a certain amount of strength through regular workouts, but he knew that in a short amount of time, he wouldn't be able to roll cars or punch through rock.

"It'll be great being able to... You know... Be with a woman again," he chuckled as Doug sat on a bench next to him.

They were watching Briggs work on repairing his van. It was as if the burly little guy purposely wrecked the machine just so he had something to do instead of being on patrol. He was supposed to be resting a set of cracked ribs, but the injury didn't seem to show any sign of slowing him down.

"You know, Briggs," Doug's strangely deep, feminine voice sometimes cracked to lighter pitches and octaves as she spoke, a sign that her Superadine was wearing down as well, "If Mort catches ya' doing this, he might think you're malingering."

"It was his idea," the burly green monster grumbled, "He caught me working the really heavy bag, told me to do something constructive."

    "Really heavy bag?" Garm asked.

"The normal ones break too easy, so I made one out of steel mesh and filled it with cinder blocks."

The other two looked at each other worriedly and noticed that members of their team had gathered around. They looked like they had questions to ask.

"So... Doug..." Ashen began, "You're, uh... You're a woman?"

"Yes," the ogre rolled her eyes and folded her arms over her chest again, "I'm a woman."

"But 'Doug' is a guy's name..."

"I just thought it would be easier among the Trolls if they thought I was a guy. They usually name themselves after classic monsters, so I was a little worried when I took an old classmate's name, but nobody cared and a short while later I was in Garm's group."

"So, what's your real name?" Blizzard Front grinned a little

"Patricia. My name is Patricia Helman."

The others in the group nodded. The blue-skinned blaster started grinning and chuckling, but let the source of his humor remain a mystery.

"So... You'll be turning human now?" Greg Caid asked as he wrapped a bandage around his wrist.

"Yes, we'll be turning human," Garm replied somberly, "Every time we have to fight, we burn off a little more Superadine and turn a little less green."

"It gets harder and harder every day to generate my rock armor," Patricia/Doug sighed, "And my skin feels so much softer... I'm thinking that I should probably stop now before I get hurt."

"You both should," Mortiganen rasped as he approached, "I need to talk to them alone. The rest of you, leave."

"What about Briggs?" the orange-skinned tanker asked as he saw the third troll wasn't moving from his vehicle.

"What I have to say might concern him as well," the wizard muttered, "Mister McBain, are you suffering from a lack of strength or an increase in vulnerability?"

    "Nope," was the curt reply.

"Regardless..." Mortiganen gave a sideways glance to the burly green man before continuing, "Freedom Corps' scientists have explained what made Grendel... At least what we think is Grendel, may have been formed with a new brand of Superadine. I'm hoping you two can help as Mister Danesti and I organize a few strikes against Frost Family storehouses and shipping lanes. You may not be able to help in the fight yet, but your experience as Troll leaders will be invaluable."

"I appreciate the offer, Mort," Garm replied, "Thanks, but I'll have to think it over."

"What is there to think over?" Patricia asked as she joined him on his walk around the block, "We get to keep helping the group..."

"Yeah, and once this investigation is over, what? What do we do once our knowledge, which grows more obsolete every day, no longer applies to the investigations? Do we just shuffle into the background of the group? Do we work as janitors, maybe help Briggs soup up his van?"

"I wouldn't mind knowing how to do mechanic work," the green woman said glumly.

"I'm saying we've got a lot to consider, D-Pat..." Garm sighed, "Sorry about that. I just... I don't know what to do anymore. Before, when someone said 'go' I could run in and start swinging my fists until I was either on the ground or the problem was resolved. Trolls, Redeemers... It didn't matter. Now, everything gets a little clearer every day and I'm starting to see all these complications to every little thing..."

"And you feel powerless against it all..."

He turned to the young woman then. He'd never regarded her as such before, and he had even known the secret after a drunken revelation back in the days when they were in the grips of Superadine. Her features were softening a little more every day. Even now, she'd be considered attractive by some standards.

"Patricia," the former Caliban scratched the back of his bald head and jumped a little when he realized he felt the shoots of new hair follicles there, "Uh... Well... Look, you want to go get dinner?"

The former Ogre smiled at him and nodded. He didn't know where the night would take them, but Garm was at least feeling a little better that he was just doing something instead of letting himself be paralyzed with indecision. As they walked to a sub shop down the street, he threw an arm around his companion's shoulders and hugged her close.

"We've been through a lot," he sighed, "I don't think we've ever done something like this, though."

"One step at a time, Garm," she replied quietly as she poked him in the ribs, "It's not so difficult as you're trying to make it seem."

    8. Smack Talkin'

We know that City of Heroes players sometimes curse.

    That doesn't make it OK.

There's a chat filter in City of Heroes that prevents players from reading a lot of cursing in the chat channels.

That still doesn't make cursing OK.

Players cursing each other represent a not-so-insignificant number of Petitions submitted by players. This requires GM's to spend a not-so-insignificant amount of time reading chat logs of players saying lots of not-so-nice things to each other, about each other, their characters, their behaviors, and their mothers.

For those who read my last column, "We Wish You Wouldn't" this is a really big We Wish You Wouldn't.

Some players are used to being able to curse like drunken sailors and are used to the anonymous shared-harassment zone that is pretty much most of the Internet, where if anyone claims to take offense, it's usually worth a big happy pile-on by everyone else.

This is one of those cases where the City of Heroes players can have really glaring differences in attitude. Compare the above with players who genuinely take offense at being called a naughty word and given what is said in the Petition language, expect the offending player to be removed from the game immediately, with characters and account deleted, agents in sunglasses and trenchcoats knocking at the offender's door, and thunderbolts from the heavens sent to smite them...

    That doesn't happen.

Well it might, but we're not the ones who send the guys in sunglasses and trenchcoats.

There are many different people playing and enjoying City of Heroes. Both genders, many ages, many backgrounds, many nationalities, and many values. At Game Services we need to be concerned about the wellbeing of all City of Heroes players.

The ideal situation is one where City of Heroes players always respect one another, even during times of frustration and disagreement.

But we're not so naive as to think that this ideal situation will ever be fully realized. Players do get bored, and players do intentionally, or unintentionally, annoy each other.

It happens. L'enfer, c'est les autres.

We know this can be frustrating, even though the stories might be funny to read after the fact.

There are some controls in place that any player can use when other players frustrate them.

The command /Ignore is the most powerful of controls available to the player - but of course it's not possible to Ignore everyone, and there are annoying things players can do that doesn't involve chat text.

I'm running a risk even mentioning it, because I think there are already a lot of players who are to quick to use Ignore, and that improperly use Ignore.

I read a lot of chat logs, and I come across this kind of behavior a lot:

Character A is annoyed by Character B.

Character A tells Character B directly or in open chat - "You're ignored" or something similar to that effect.

    Character A then /Ignores Character B.

I know why players do this. It's a gut reaction, the last chance for communication when communication is going nowhere. Most players don't really want to ignore anyone - they just want to make their frustration known before cutting off the offending player (and actually wouldn't mind it if that player got into trouble because of it).

Such action rarely works. About the only time it does work is when two players are annoying each other, often unintentionally. Both players realize the conversation isn't worth continuing, and /Ignore each other, after one last tell-off.

Players will sometimes send Harassment Petitions against each other too. These Harassment Petitions generally get labeled as cases of "mutual harassment" and are closed.

So, to all players who occasionally feel like they're being harassed by another player, please consider the following:
[*]If you're a PvPer, I'm not talking to you right now. Scroll down.[*]If you're a jerk, scroll down further.[*]If you get into an argument, try not to make things worse. Explain yourself, but be respectful. This is especially important if you're on a team with another player, or otherwise have to immediately depend on the other player for your own enjoyment.[*]Pay attention to what's being said, and be patient. Again, this is hard to do, and not always possible - for example when you're in a team on a mission, and the Elite Boss is bearing down on your team because of something that someone did wrong. But if it's just people hanging out in Atlas Park or Pocket D, you've probably got time to be civil and talk it out.[*]Be aware that not every other player is as nice as you. If you think someone is being not nice and wants to annoy you, you’re probably right.[*]If you're going to use /Ignore, don't make a show of it. Just Ignore and move on. If you can, stop interacting in any way with the player that's annoying you.[*]Don’t retaliate in kind. This isn’t a battle worth having. Stop talking, use Ignore, and send a Support Petition.
Now, for the PvPers in the house:
[*]We don’t mind you talking smack. PvP is probably the only situation in City of Heroes where it’s OK to expect other players to be annoyed by other players. [*]Keep it clean. No "I pk u irl" stuff, no cursing, no spam overload.[*]Don’t talk smack for the purpose of getting other people to curse back. We’ll probably take it as evidence that you don’t really take offense.[*]The chat filter doesn’t make cursing OK. It’s easily foiled by misspellings and is mainly useful as a convenience to those who don’t want to read cursing. It’s not a license to be a potty mouth.
And for the run-of-the-mill jerky boys, take the PvPers’ list, and add:
[*]Don’t be a jerk. Yeah, we know it can be fun to make other people annoyed, but don’t. It makes them not want to play, which we don’t like. Don’t do that.[*]Don’t file Petitions to harass others. We know it’s done, usually by those who recently got busted for cursing. We’ll investigate all Petitions, but if it’s obvious what’s really happening, we’ll come after you instead.[*]We don’t hate you. We’d just rather you were doing something that’s fun for more than just yourself.
Your PvPEC Reps!

    Liberty Server Organizer: DJ_Dazzler

Let me speak for myself here on this topic.

I hated PvP - always had. I got into PvP back in the days when I played a few other MMO's that I will not mention and my experience with them was the worst anyone could have ever had. Those MMO's PvP systems were way different than what CoX has.

In some of those MMO's, if you PvP'd you actually took a chance of completely losing your character if they were defeated and/or you lost items of great value and strength like those lovely little recipes we all want to get our hands on. Then there were the attitudes that people love to hand out - because as they say - it's the PvP world and anything is supposed to go. Being defeated was one thing, but being treated like I never could accomplish anything else but defeat was the worse possible let down anyone could have. However...

I came to City of Heroes, and the Arena eventually arrived. That was a task within itself I might add. I was playing Darklite Burst back then - she was, and always will be, my favorite character that I've created. My SuperGroup mates and I headed off to the Arena a few times for our New Year's Eve Bashes, which mostly landed me dead and defeated - but it was fun and it was amongst friends.

Saulot using his gosh-awful Illusion Tricks on my poor Dark Servant, turning Fluffy against me, and holding me to death while his Phantoms whooped me into submission.

Or Eagles Claw coming up and slicing me up with that Katana of his, asking Zander to turn off all his Regeneration Shields just so I could kill him at least once and say I did it! Even though it was purely my cheating.

Light Bill becoming just like a Sapper and stealing all my end.

    Those were the days.

There was a time I used to head over to Justice and PvP too with their Saturday Night Fights when none other than DJ Needelz was hosting it.

I remember a time when I had Spicey Dazzler still on the Justice Server and was messing around in Recluse's Victory and purely as a fluke this Stone Brute decides he's going to mess with my Fire/Storm Controller. I somehow defeated him and said WOW! I actually did that? The Stone Brute attacked me but forgot to put on his shields and once I got hold of him he couldn't get out to get those shields up.

Eventually I joined PvPEC, not because I liked PvP and not because I was good at it, but because I wanted to hopefully help create an interest for others just like me who really sucked at PvP and yet keep their experiences with it fun. Hopefully I've accomplished this somewhat, and will continue to do so in the years to come. I do need Liberty's help though, I'd like to know what I can do for you so you'll come defeat me lots!

P.S. I forgot to mention! I've created a Global Channel that we'd like you to join if you're interested in knowing when we are holding events on the Liberty Server. We will of course always post on the Forums but an added touch of love in game is nice once in awhile so please join the Global Chat Channel PvP Events Liberty.

    Writer's Block

    Hey everybody!

Last time we talked about exercises to help your writing skills. A couple weeks ago I was talking with a buddy of mine - you may know him - Ascendent.

Ascendent helped me get the idea for this week’s article. I want to put out another technique that I think will help to get the creative juices flowing: looking at other forms of art. I’m not talking about reading other people’s work. Don’t get me wrong though, what we all do as writers is art, no two ways about it.

By other forms of art I mean looking at paintings and photography, listening to music, and even watching dance. Seeing other forms of artistic expression evokes emotions in you that you may not fully understand at first. The way a certain piece of music moves you to think of a funeral, or the way a painting’s vibrant colors makes you think of a fireworks display - that's what I’m talking about. These feelings may help you get in the mood to write certain pieces that also convey the type of emotion you want the reader to feel.

For example, when I want to write a sad piece or an introspective piece about a character, I tend to listen to the band 'Renaissance.' If you haven’t heard them you should check them out, specifically the song Cold is Being Lonely.

Fight scenes? Well, that’s easy - Learn the Hard Way by 'Nickleback.'

One of my heroes has a distinctive Western feel to him. When I write about him I listen to Walk Believer Walk by the 'Black Crowes.'

Listening to music tends to help get the imagination flowing through the use of other mediums. Immersing yourself in that mindset and mood will enhance your focus and ability to relate to the piece as a whole.

Paintings can help by seeing how things actually look in real life, or how the emotion appears visually. Perhaps a better idea would be to look at illustrations of heroes fighting or standing heroically in a city backdrop will help as well for our particular brand of Fan-Fiction.

In that case, go to deviantArt.com and do a search for City of Heroes. Literally thousands of artists draw CoX Fan-Art and it certainly helps me to see visual representations of heroes and villains to learn how to describe the fighting, or the way a cape flows in the wind.

What I can say is that you cannot say these techniques won’t work until you try them. Not every exercise I know works for everyone, since we all have different minds and work differently altogether. But by trying everything, you may find what works for you and what doesn’t so that you can perfect your writing so that it is your very best.

    Write on!
