Quote:Buffy was basically the only one with superhuman powers in the whole group and her purpose was to kill vamps and other monsters.ironically my biggest complaint about Buffy and why I stopped watching it in the second to last season was that he would not kill of Spike. Spike was terrible on the show (he was fun when he went to Angel later). But he was so popular they would not get rid of him.
the real problem with Whedon is that everything turns out to be about the teenage girl with amazing powers who is better than all of her allies put together.
Her friends brought wisdom, knowledge, magic and the everyman to the group.
For Firefly/Serenity, River was a prodigy who could pick up on and learn anything and master it with ease. There was an episode where Simon scanned her brain to learn the full damage done and how they damaged her reality cortex or some such and thus knew how to treat her better with the proper drugs.
Serenity took it one step further and not only was her sense of reality skewed now, but also she is basically a telepath and what was done to her likely amped her ability as well as leaving it permanently switched ON, so she's picking up on all the mental chatter and can't always sort it hence her sometimes random babble with occasional moments of lucidity. Almost reminds me of Malkavian's from Vamp the Masquerade.
But everyone in FIrefly/Serenity brought something to the group:
1. Mal: the leader, world weary, darker version of Han Solo, has a moral code but is also a confused walking case of PTS at times.
2. Zoe: loyal soldier and second in command
3. Wash: the wisecracking ace pilot
4. Simon: the doctor and everyman
5. Jayne: the big tough guy that loves a fight, loves to get paid. Has some small sense of honor but if the money is right, look out because you may not be able to trust him
6. Kaylee: the genius engineer
7. Shepard Book: the man of mystery, full of tales and wisdom.
8. River: the prodigy character but hampered by serious issues. She didn't get to really shine except for one or two episodes and then really emerged in Serenity after she got to Planet Miranda, breathed in some of the atmosphere with the pax which may or may not have helped calm her mind, plus all the silence on the planet since the population was dead, and then facing the origin of the Reavers helped jolt her mind back to relative working order. When the Reavers attacked she had telepathic overload until Simon getting hurt snapped her out of it and then she just cut loose. -

Quote:I look forward to this, but answer this for me: is there a moment in the movie where THOR gets separated from his hammer and can't summon it to him and Captain America shows that he can lift the hammer?I have no doubt there will be detractors for this film, there always are, some justified, some not so much (check out the negative review from Amy Nicholson on Rotten Tomatoes, I'm not even sure she's actually seen the film!)
I loved the film, thought it was easily the best big box office actionfest comic book movie ever, tbh!
For me, there's very little wrong with it and, as expected from a Joss Whedon movie, all the characters get a fair shake at screen time, although the bigger name stars tend to get a little more, which I would expect.
Honestly, if you're even remotely a comic book fan, a superhero fan, a sci-fi fan, any of those......just go and see it
Steve Rogers is the one hero from Earth in the MU as confirmed as worthy of the hammer of THOR, I'm curious if that makes it into the movie. -
Quote:Created by Jim Starlin back in the 70's, THANOS is the Marvel Comic equivalent to DC's Darkseid. However Darkseid wants to conquer and reshape the universe to his sense of order, Thanos however is a death worshipping nihilist that wants it all to burn. Not familiar with the character, but doesn't sound all that interesting on wiki. What's the appeal?
After Starlin revived Thanos on the 90's, we began to see some evolution in the character until Starlin again returned to Marvel and finally had Thanos realize the folly of all his attempts to seize ultimate power and began to reform him. However if I recall, editorial wanted Thanos to still be the big cosmic evil of the MU and this pretty much made Starlin quit Marvel indefinitely. Too bad too, many other writes have failed to get a good handle on the character.
In his first life back in the 70's he had enough physical might to fight the THING and THOR in hand to hand combat at the same time, he is basically immortal, and a super genius who dedicated his intelligence to the destruction of all life everywhere, all to appease his love of death.
When Death revived him in the 90's in the Silver Surfer, he was given even greater power then before, and was just as cunning and deadly as ever. The Silver Surfer was the chosen one as it were to rally the troops and go against THANOS as he was one of the few that could begin to match THANOS' power levels. It took the revived Adam Warlock to stop him during the Infinity Gauntet adventure and Thanos returned to help save the cosmos in Infinity War and Crusade. While not necessarily doing this out of nobility, he still was invaluable in the conflicts.
When Drax the Destroyer killed Thanos during Annihilation, Thanos was dead and at peace in the arms of his love, Death. But, Adam Warlock as a precaution that Thanos would be needed again, stuck Thanos' body in a regeneration cocoon and he hatched at the start of the Thanos Imperative, alive again and definitely NOT in the best of moods. At the end of the tale, Death rejected him despite his services and his promises to extinguish all life again, etc.
Currently, Thanos, Starlord and Nova are trapped in another universe as of the end of the Thanos Imperative. They are presumed deceased, but we all know that won't be the case. -
Generally yes, but I think they also give out the occasional honorary Darwin to people who survive such stupidity.

The Chuck Norris incident reminds me of the legend of when Bruce Lee was reported as working or practicing in his backyard and some idiot hopped the fence and challenged him to a fight.
Bruce was rather furious that his home was violated and put all his fury, speed and power into one kick.
Fight was over before it started. -

Quote:Oh I wasn't referring to you, Lothic. Conversations with you are always good to have.I simply think the crumminess factor of the Three Stooges movie compares about as well to Highlander 2 as a hand grenade compares to a tactical nuclear device. Neither are very "good" if they drop into your foxhole, but one is still much better than the other.
Btw, I like that grenade/nuke comparison. Well done! -
Quote:Who said I had a chip on my shoulder about this? I never directly said I had a chip on my shoulder.Yeah, you're not being ridiculous or anything.
Honestly, I don't live in the past and I'm not horribly jaded or have a chip on my shoulder about remakes, so I'll give this movie a shot when it hits DVD or something.
I had hoped this movie would have done the Stooges legacy some justice but it didn't as far as I'm concerned.
As to the Highlander 2 comment, that's not my problem if some people don't like it. -
Quote:Was predicting and hoping for Thanos even before any web rumors surfaced. After all, the tesseract is the Cosmic Cube, and only THANOS would have greater knowledge/experience with the cube then the Skull. Also THANOS is one threat that would require the Avengers to come back together to face.Your prediction?
You said here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=288166 that you read the rumor on other sites.
Anyways...can't wait to see this movie. -
Quote:Current numbers show a 30 million budget with 29 million intake so far. Presuming these are accurate, I doubt a sequel will happen, but we'll see.Eh, I think I probably could have lived a long life if this particular movie had never been made. It was not something that I -needed- to see before I died. Having said that I still don't think it was an absolutely horrible movie in and of itself.
They might try for a sequel to it at some point but I'm not sure that's certain - from what I understand this movie is not a financial bomb but it's not like it made huge profits either. If anything this'll probably just make it easier for the Farrelly Brothers to make -another- non-Stooges movie. -
Quote:To be perfectly honest, this Stooge movie just should not have been made.I certainly wouldn't consider this the best movie ever made and it's certainly arguable that it's not even a good attempt at a Three Stooges movie. But just as a straight-forward movie in and of itself it was far, far better and less annoying than the likes of a Highlander 2. I think you should be much more careful with the idle insinuation that -any- random movie is as bad as something like that abomination.
Let's put it this way: I don't "hate" that I actually spent the time to go see this new Stooges movie. I went into it not expecting too much and that's pretty much what I got out of it. It was mildly amusing in a few places and had a fairly simplistic story/plot that it presented well enough from beginning to end. I'd give it about a 6/10 - by comparison I'd give Highlander 2 about a 1/10.
What's sad is they they probably will still try for a sequel. Perhaps the plot will be the Three Stooges learning that they have a long lost older brother and they seek him out and it's Shemp. Please note that is not a knock against Shemp, just idle speculation about possible future plots. -
Okay so I was forcibly dragged to the theater and chained to my chair to see this train wreck of a film. (be assured that after it was over they found themselves bound in chains)
As a Three Stooges fan and historian I can say these nice things about the movie:
1. They definitely researched the Stooges stunts and routines
2. They definitely practiced the routines.
3. The Farley Brothers at the end had a short but necessary segment on how the props used were made of rubber, (the hammers, etc) and they demonstrated some of the hits both with and without sound effects and they also showed how the eyepoke is supposed to be done and gave a warning about never poking someone in the eyes. Nice safety lecture and they also covered themselves from inevitable complaints of people hurting others with the eyepoke.
4. The found actors that could imitate the Stooges individually but they just didn't synergize that well with each other.
5. The revived pretty much all the old sound FX for the slaps and pokes and hits and pratfalls.
6. Many things they did were updated/modernized Stooge jokes and stunts plus some new stuff.
Problems:
1. Stooge humor back in the day was both slapstick, sitcom and also humor reflecting the times. Crass humor however has no place in the Three Stooges, something the Farley brothers should remember.
2. Moe was perhaps the best imitated Stooge of the three, though they also did a nice job with casting Larry. Curly was also well imitated but then again he can be the easiest of the three to imitate. Please note this is nothing against Curly, he was just the most visible and popular of the Three Stooges and imitating him was something that could be easily done compared to Moe and Larry.
3. The three actors seemed to give it their all, but to me they just didn't have the synergy that the originals had, whether it was Moe Larry and Curly, Moe Larry and Shemp, or Moe Larry and Curly Joe DeRita. (We do not speak of Joe Besser). To me at best they came off as pale imitations or reflections of the originals.
4. The originals generally played off their characters as naive, a bit dumb or slow on the uptake, but good hearted people. These imitations played the stooges as kind hearted morons that felt like they belonged in the next Dumb and Dumber movie.
The plot: okay its a Three Stooges adventure movie, so you know the plot isn't going to win any awards. Basically they grow up in the orphanage since no one would dare adopt them. They learn the place needs $830,000 or it will be closed down and they decide to go forth into the modern world to get the money somehow.
Some of the joke routines that were decent
Moe: "We'll forge ahead!"
Larry: "We'll forge rivers!"
Curly: "We'll forge checks!"
Curly: "Foster! That's Australian for beer!"
Moe: "Would you take it in a glass or in a mug?"
Curly: "I'll take it in the mug!"
Moe slaps Curly
Many classic Stooge stunts, jokes, schticks, etc. were replicated and imitated in this turkey of a movie (pay attention to hotel signs and business signs for a few grins) and while some may make you smile or chuckle briefly, in the end this movie basically should be considered "Nil, Nul and Void. Three Hams that lay their own eggs."
Don't see this in the theaters, don't even other netflixing or redboxing it. Don't even bother trying to download it. It's just not worth seeing.
You are far better off watching the classic skits, including the ones with Joe Besser, then go watch the movies they made with Curly Joe DeRita.
In fact, I might actually consider watching Highlander 2, Highlander 5 and Star Trek 5 to cleanse my memories of this movie. -
Here is a link that summarizes the connections between the movies:

So nice to see that my prediction for the sequel villain was right. -
That may not be so easy this time given the current conflagration occurring in Mega City One, also Dredd's age cannot be ignored. I think the character is now in his mid 60's if not 70 years old.
Makes one wonder what they will do, have this Dredd meet his final end then spin up a new clone "brother" who decides to take up the name Dredd and carry on the name? Or kill him and be done with it? (doesn't seem likely given his popularity). Or somehow rejuvenate his youth? -

BEWARE..........THE DARK JUDGES
I hope if the upcoming movie does well enough that the sequel has Judge Death and the Dark Judges. -
Quote:In Serenity, Shepard's death was what gave Mal the fire and passion back that he lost after the war was ended. Mal was then extremely motivated to bring down the alliance and end things. Wash's death was to break the invincibility bubble for lack of a better term and show that anyone can die. Also as much as I like Wash, Mal can pilot the ship and River can do pretty much anything, so as good a pilot as Wash was he may well have been the most expendable of the crew. There are a couple of things to consider here.
A great many of the people who see this movie will not have seen Serenity. It has a much wider audience.
Thus, the reason for the death in Serenity still stands: to suggest that the peril is real, and not all characters can depend on script-immunity.
You can't add a character just for the movie in order to kill them off (i.e. a Red Shirt). Without the emotional investment it's meaningless. It has to be a popular recurring character to work. And I'm afraid X was really the only candidate.
If everyone had seen Serenity, yes, it would be repetitive and unnecessary, but, although it was a great movie, it didn't reach that wide an audience.
As to the death reported in Avengers, I won't say who it is for those that haven't read the review, but to me the character wasn't brought in to be a victim of the infamous red shirt curse. -
