Quote:Actually comparing the Doomsday Machine to the Death Star isn't too bad of a comparison. The TNG novel VENDETTA gave us a new Doomsday Machine and revealed the purpose of it and the prototype that Kirk destroyed: DESTROY THE BORG.Yes but of course something like that could only be understood by someone who actually cared about the franchise he's running now. I'd be surprised if we didn't see "laser swords" and "X-wing" fighters show up in the next Trek.
Then again maybe if somebody convinced him that the Doomsday Machine was something like Star Trek's version of a Death Star then maybe he'd be willing to go for it.
Quote:See this is why we can't have nice, mindless movies like the good old days - people have to have the audacity to remember that actions have consequences even in a fictional universe... -
I was one month away from my next vet badge when Freedom went live and broke them. Soon I'll be due another vet badge.
Fix them or remove them, please. I've suggest before that if you have to remove them that you could toss us about 8000 paragon points as compensation.
Or else use Lothic's idea to check account creation dates. -
Quote:Khan did study as many files as he could in Space Seed. It is possible that he saw the roster of the crew and studied it to determine potential threats and allies and that Chekov was on the Enterprise but not part of the bridge crew yet.Would Nu-Khan retain the ability to remember the faces of people he's never met before?
-k
I've always been more curious about just why Starfleet didn't impose a quarantine of the Ceti Alpha star system after Khan was planted in Ceti Alpha 5, why Starfleet didn't have some automated monitoring station setup to monitor the planet in case Khan escaped, and just HOW the crew of the Reliant upon entering the star system didn't happen to notice that a planet was missing from the system that should have been on their maps of the star system. -
Quote:They want Khan back for the villain name recognition to help generate fan interest and keep this nu-Trek alive. The irony of the Abrams "alternate timeline" reboot is that it should be relatively easy to explain why Nu-Kirk and company would never be in the right place at the right time to ever run across Kahn's sleeper ship in the first place. The destruction of Vulcan has likely changed where the Enterprise would be in the galaxy at any point -after- that. An encounter with Nu-Kahn should realistically never happen in AbramsTrek.
Regardless I'm not going to assume that this new movie with Nu-Khan is automatically going to be good or bad. But clearly Abrams' naivety with the franchise is leading him think that bringing back Khan (arguably the best Star Trek movie villain) is a safe bet for his new movie. I suppose time will tell if it blows up in his face or not.
However, unless Spock-Prime tells Kirk about the Botany Bay and at what coordinates it was found and at what stardate they found it and THEN they backtrack along Botany Bay's vector at the time it was found to try to find it now, then Kirk shouldn't be the one to find it.
Which means Khan should not have a psychotic obsession with wanting Kirk dead like he did in Wrath of Khan. That version of Khan's hatred of Kirk was somewhat justifiable after all since neither Kirk nor Starfleet sought to check on them over the 15 years they were on the planet, but it wasn't Kirk's fault that Ceti Alpha 6 exploded and trashed the environment of Ceti Alpha 5, or that Khan's wife was killed.
So, the Khan we get should be the Khan from Space Seed. He wants to take over and conquer and feels that his time is now in this new era he awakes in. To me, this should be the more deadly version of Khan since he was thinking more clearly then he was in Wrath of Khan. In W.O.K. he was way too obsessed with vengeance.
Frankly in this new timeline I'd be more interested in Spock-Prime telling them about the Doomsday Machine. That device is a greater menace then Khan and should be intercepted and neutralized immediately. Also we never learned its origins or if others are out there, so that may make for an interesting movie. -
Quote:Yes indeed, an Amok TimeSo you're saying it's time for speculations to run amok for this new movie... a sort of Amok Time if you will.
There have been rumors about the "big villain" in this movie for months now. I'm probably going to see it regardless, but I really do hope they move past the whole "reboot/origin" concept and make a good solid movie. Part or what made Abrams' first Trek movie vaguely annoying was his need to "reinvent/reintroduce" the characters. Love them or hate them they are the new cast of the franchise so we should just get over it and have a movie that's actually worthy of being considered a Trek movie - even if that has to be some kind of rehash of Khan.
Seriously though, bringing in Khan I honestly feel is a mistake. Ricardo Montalbon made that character, and yes he is perhaps the deadliest non-Klingon enemy of Kirk but I was hoping for something new.
As to reinventing or reintroducing the characters, the old Trek series had its pilot episode The Cage/Menagerie, then the new pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before, complete with prop changes and cast changes, and that Kirk was Captain of the Enterprise for it's third 5 year mission, the previous one under Pike and before that was Robert April.
Now instead, Kirk is command of the Enterprise fresh out of the shipyard, no Robert April and Pike's tenure was brief. As to the rest of the bridge crew, it was never stated in canon how or why they were assigned to the Enterprise back in the old days, they were just simply there. Chekov comes in later as the newest bridge crew member fairly fresh from the academy, but Sulu, Uhura and Scotty's back stories were never really told in the show or movies. So learning their origins is fine with me, but I'd rather see new menaces arise in this new Trek and not a rehashed Khan. -

I take anything from Aint It Cool with a large truckload of salt. These are rumors only, so let speculation run amok. -

Quote:That Matrix reviewer needs to be fired.Yeah laughing at the negative reviews is probably appropriate for this film. But I often find it fascinating to read the "minority report" reviews whenever a movie is either strongly positive or negative. Sometimes their points of view on why they disagree with everyone else is surreal.
One of the classic ones I remember was this reviewer who absolutely hated the first Matrix movie because they didn't like the "imaginary" parts when Neo was on the ship as a normal human but loved the "real" parts when Neo was in the city flying around and dodging bullets while fighting the agents. Somehow this reviewer had completely reversed which parts of the movie were supposed to be in the "real world" versus which parts were in the Matrix. And somehow that person had a "job" as a movie reviewer.
Also here is a hilarious article on the Avengers Movie that Coulda (NEVER) Been!

Quote:Loki's defeat had just about everyone in the theater I was at rolling in the aisles with laughter.Loki's defeat was HILARIOUS!!! I wouldn't have been surprised if we'd seen little birdies circling his head.
Oh and my next favorite Hulk scene was when he sucker punched Thor. You KNOW which scene I'm talking about.

Quote:Bravo! We each win the internet!Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerous ways, FOX Stupidity. Your sad devotion to the ancient Nielson ratings has not helped you conjure up the trust of your dissatisfied viewers, or given you enough clairvoyance to figure out exactly what kinds of shows your audience actually wants to watch...

Quote:Do not be too proud of this fantastic movie that Whedon has spawned. The ability to produce/write/direct awesome TV shows and movies is insignificant next to the power of FOX stupidity.I think it's safe to say, if Whedon ever goes back to television, no one will dare cancel his shows for a loooooooong time

Quote:Saw this just yesterday in a lovely deluxe cinema (out here in Australia, we have Gold Class cinemas where you get lazyboy chairs with the whole electric backrest/footrest thing and menu meals and alcohol if you want), and I loved the utter heck out of this film. It ranks up there with X-Men 2 for me (for very different reasons) as a superhero ensemble film.
Everyone gets a moment to shine. Every character has a character moment and Whedon lets his actors well....act. Robert Downey Jr looks reinvigorated as Tony Stark and Chris Evans projects just who Captain America is pitch perfectly.
And Mark Ruffalo is my new shiny perfect Hulk. I am a huge Hulk fan and I've had to go through two flawed movies before I get the big guy properly done on screen. Stay with us, Mr. Ruffalo. We need you.
Lots of funny lines and subversions of the genre (the bit with Loki near the end is hillarious) and plenty of moments to see the heroes in actual peril, which is hard to pull off in these movies.
I think Joss Whedon not only just stepped into the big leagues, but now will have the rub to pick and choose his projects. And how long have people thought he should, eh?
Five stars from me. Go see this, at least twice.
S.
RDJ shows once again that he is indeed Tony Stark, he has the character perfectly portrayed. Though I was slightly puzzled that he comments about how the shrapnel is still in him. I would think that by now he would have been able to have the shrapnel removed and still need the mini arc reactor to keep his heart going due to lingering damage.
Mark Ruffalo portrayed a very nice Banner, both humorous and a bit menacing at times as everyone occasionally would get the reminder that keeping Banner calm is a good idea
Chris Evans also has a good lock on the character of Captain America. This movie didn't touch too much on the angst he must be feeling about being 70 years out of time, I suspect that is all for Captain America 2. Nice speech he gave when he landed in that crowd, too.
Scarlet as the Black Widow, no complaints. THOR was also portrayed well as was Hawkeye.
Marvel has been building to this for years and this is indeed a nice payoff. Now we just need to brace ourselves for the sequels to Cap, THOR, Iron Man and hopefully Avengers 2. -
Quote:Yeah I know exactly who that is in the bonus scene, and the line about courting death was no coincidenceYeah. Without any spoilers... anyone know who that is? I have my suspicions, but seeing how I know next to nothing about the Marvel franchise, I'm probably wrong.

Quote:Well my job took my overseas for the past few days, so naturally once my tech work was done before catching my plane I just had to get to the theaters over there. My one problem was how the hulk was portrayed with gorilla like mannerisms...even to the point of walking with his feet and fists at one point.
Also...Hulk punching Thor was funny as hell...but I really wish they would of left it out of this movie...to keep it a more serious tone.
Minor Spoilers follow.
Fantastic movie, very well done. Each Avenger got their screen time and played their roles well. Also kudos to Joss Whedon for giving us the Hulk at his proper power levels, just like Ang Lee did with his Hulk movie. As much as I liked the 2008 Hulk, that Hulk was a bit powered down compared to Ang Lee Hulk and the Avengers.
Excellent dialog, nice level of humor and angst, great FX. Also a nice tribute scene to the cover of Iron Man volume 1 issue 118.
Thoroughly enjoyed the scene of Stark talking to Loki as well as the reasons for that scene. Also as Stark described the team and mentioned "a man with breathtaking anger issues" Loki's smile at that statement and the audience laughing was nicely timed.
Also enjoyed the scene as Cap gives everyone their orders for the big fight. Hulk was the last one to receive orders and it was simply this:
Cap turns to HULK and says "And HULK.......!" Hulk looks at Cap for his orders and Cap just says, "........SMASH!" Hulk just grins, leaps into the air and proceeded to carry out the only order he needs. SMASH!
Also, be thoroughly prepared to roll in the aisles with laughter at how Loki is defeated. Not his grand scheme mind you, I mean Loki himself. You'll know it when you see it
Finally, you want to stay for the credits and the bonus scene.... -

Quote:I don't think that it is so much that times have changed, more that imitating the Stooges is tough to do and getting three that can both imitate the Stooges and synchronize together like the originals is not an easy thing. Case in point, after Shemp died they had some episodes still to complete, and while some were "in the can" for final editing they needed a "fake shemp" stunt double for the last few episodes. This fake shemp would always appear briefly, his face concealed and never interacted much with Moe and Larry and it was Moe and Larry that would carry the episode as the two stooges, then came Joe Besser and a weak budget and recycled scripts and that Joe wasn't all into slapstick didn't help matters at all.I think one has to enjoy the slapstick of the original Stooges to enjoy the movie.
While I'm sure there's an audience for it, I don't think it's ever going to be as widespread/big as they originally were. Times have changed.
To be honest I think if they want to make a modern stooge movie they should go through all the Curly skits for footage and dialogue and then basically CGI-construct a movie and CGI the supporting cast into it. -
Perhaps this event could also be used to destroy another City/Zone of the game? Adds some drama, doesn't it?

I just direct said diehards to youtube, search under Bruce Lee and look for any and all footage of him training or demonstrating things like his one inch punch that sent Bob Baker into the chair and then onto the ground. Baker stated he had chest pain for a week and asked Bruce to not demonstrate that on a human again.

Quote:Now that's funny.Quite literally. Bruce, putting all his fury, speed and power into one kick made the strike superluminal, thus knocking the intruder back in time to a point just before he hopped the fence, where a sudden unexplained sense of impending doom caused him to change his mind.
Here's another one about Bruce:
In 1962, Lee was challenged by a man who had been holding a grudge against Lee while the two were practicing at a YMCA in Seattle.[45] The man was described by Jesse Glover as a karate man who also had a blackbelt in judo, though Glover, who was a brown belt in judo at the time, claimed to be better than the man in judo.[45] After weeks[46] or months[47] of provocation by the man, Lee agreed to fight the man for three two-minute rounds, with the winner being the one who knocked the opponent down or out in two out of three rounds.[48] The match took place at YMCA's handball court, with Glover as the referee and Ed Hart as the time keeper.[48] Lee wore street clothes and used a Wing Chun stance while his opponent wore a gi and used a karate stance.[48] According to Glover, Lee used his right forearm to deflect an initial kick from the man and simultaneously landed a left punch to the face.[48] Lee deflected more punches using the forearm, controlling the center line and landed more punches to the man's face until he was against the wall.[48] The man attempted to grab Lee's arms, which Lee responded by a double fist punch to the face and chest, followed by a kick to the nose, which produced a nosebleed and a knockout, at which time Glover stopped the fight.[48] Taki Kamura said the fight lasted 10 seconds.[49] Ed Hart stated "the fight lasted exactly 11 seconds I know because I was the time keeper and Bruce had hit the guy something like 15 times and kicked him once. I thought he'd killed him". -
Quote:As I recall from watching the original Japanese anime series that would become Robotech, Macross suffered the least rewriting in comparison to the other two series. Southern Cross was perhaps the most cerebral but also the dullest of the three.
So I assume looking at your examples that it's OK to include anime as long as it's been televised in English in the US or does the plot also need to be severely rewritten like Robotech?
Well don't forget Gigantor. (Bigger than big, Stronger than strong). What little kid wouldn't like a radio controlled, nuclear powered giant robot that smashes it's enemies while getting tacit approval of the adults present?
Johnny Sakko and his Flying Robot - Old yes, circa 1968. And yes it is the original live action Giant Robo. Like Gigantor, a kid controlled nuclear robot of mass destruction. You can watch it on Hulu.
Still Robotech is still a classic.
Gigantor, Johnny Sokko's Flying Robot, Big O, the assorted GUNDAMs, RobotJox (Crash and burn!), all classics in their own way.
Also since we are talking robots as well as mecha-suits, let's not forget Robby the Robot, the Lost in Space Robot (B9 I think was its name),
Also we could technically include cyborgs in this: so that would mean, ROBOCOP, the 8-Man, and Infra-Man also get added to the list. Also the Bionic Man and Bionic Woman and even Max the bionic dog.
edit: just hulu'd an episode of Johnny Sokko, the series hasn't aged well, IMO -
River was also trained to be a highly effective and lethal assassin, possibly similar to the Black Widow. Now add in her telepathy always being on and she can absorb and assimilate the skills of the rest of the crew and add them to her own and yeah she can do pretty mch anything as good or as better.
