I know that some of the later 'princess' films have changed that process slightly, but the marketing of the merchandise certainly has not. (Nota bene: I have not seen the Princess and the Frog.) Mulan - good role model. Sleeping Beauty - Not so much. Cinderella? No. The Little Mermaid? You do not need to sacrifice the essentials of what makes you who you are in order to please a man who has no idea that you exist.

Take the Princess ideal and put it out of its misery. Little girls are already bombarded with messages that limit them enough as it is. (Walk into a toy store - it's like they've color coded all the toys. Girls know that its socially acceptable to play with it because its pink.) Throw it back to the bad old days, and lets get some better material out of Disney for little girls and boys.
I think your not having seen Princess and the Frog address a lot of this. The Princess Tiana more than not is a walking, talking extended apology for the past princesses. She's the anti-princess in many regards.

Exhibit A is her theme song: Almost there. Watch that video, drink in its visuals, and listen to its lyrics. She's pretty dang awesome.

In fact, Tiana's an awesome character. The whole cast of Princess and the Frog was truly inspired, even if I personally feel the movie overall was not.

Side Note: If Dr. Felicier isn't elevated to a Triple A villain in the Disney-verse, I will riot. All by myself.

    Best villain they've ever written.

Being the last offering we'll have for a while, we're going to have to make Rapunzel count.

Etch a Sketches, chalk, charcoal, photoshop... everyone on the ready.

  5. I have to admit, for all of the perceived flaws I noted in Princess and the Frog, it's a lot better than The Director's Cut.

It just now hit me that this is the end of an era.

But then again, I didn't think the Lion King was going to be good Broadway show either. Shows you what I know about Broadway, huh?
This for me. Broadway is a wild card, almost by its very nature. You can never tell what will be good, what will be successful, and when those two will overlap.

I mean, Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar are two [b]huge[/] hits, and consider what you would have thought if you heard that someone was making a rock opera based on the New Testament. Same for Cats, which I hate but recognize is wildly successful.

It sounds stupid, but Broadway can make stupid awesome.

And then she hit the ground.
Short version: Tangled is the name of the movie now. Originally, it was named Repunzel. After some market research, however, Disney has determined that Princesses are no longer "in". As such, the movie was renamed and marketing shifted its angle from "The next princess!" to "Check out this awesome and dashing man who discovers a princess!"

Disney believes the time has passed for Princess movies and has moved on.

    -----

My version: You botched Princess and the Frog when it could have been a masterpiece. To use it as a measuring poll operates on the presumption that it was as good as other Disney movies, which it was not. You had a great villain, hero, and love interest, and you completely botched it with mediocre musical numbers and a freak ton of "And then they walked some more" filler.

You failed the Frog, not the other way around. Get up on your horse and keep updating the Princess genre. You had a great but awkward start to this process.

Found the perfect picture for this article.
  9. To clarify, there's nothing here for the "1 Month at a Time" crowd, is there?

    We don't have enough!

Edit: Also, why not? We're not quite sick of the "Unassuming dude ends up with the powers to save the city he loves while barreling through angst" genre. We're not even remotely tired of it yet.

I'm holding off on the "They didn't include ---" posts until I see Part 2, but yeah, I am hoping for that, too.

Did they recast Tonks? I had a crush on her last time.
  13. Great movie. Great subtle moment where Ron agrees to like Twilight for Hermione's sake. Very clever how they did that.

Yes. The only one. In the world.

    And we gossip about you.
  15. I really don't care if they market it to Twilight fans. I like a lot of the concepts in Twilight. It's Edward and Bella's relationship that I hate. I know, I know, that sounds like I just said I hate the whole series, but I genuinely have fun during the 5% of the series that isn't that.

Unless they strive to replicate Edward in his entirety, then these "It may be similar to Twilight" doom cries don't worry me in the least.

(I have an obsession with fairy tales, with an added emphasis on Little Red Riding Hood. This movie caught me completely by surprise. So excited. )
