I would like to get something set up for photoshop.......
Does this look pencil enough for you? I tried to draw my Mako heroclix and obviously the drawing itself could be better but I mainly wanted to test my pencil brush. Everything was done in Photoshop CS5 with one brush without changing the brush size. I started with the pencil brush tutorial Camille linked, and used the tilt function (if you have Intuos or equivalent) to imitate flat broad strokes for shading. Unfortunately I can't find a way to invert input and I get flat lines when I hold my pen upright and thin lines when I hold it at an angle.
I wish I could just attach the tool preset file, but I don't think we can do that, so here are the settings I used:
"Transfer" was "Other Dynamics" in earlier versions I think.
You can play with the amount of scattering and number of count to tweak the broad strokes. In general, use small count for lower scattering and high count for higher scattering. -
I think you may want to give MyPaint a try. I forget how to link text to a web address atm, so it is http://mypaint.intilinux.com/
I downloaded Ramon all in one and Deevad4 brushpacks from here:
http://wiki.mypaint.info/Brush_Packages
Ramon has lots of videos, but he explains his pencil brushes in this one:

It's a free program and has no editing capabilities other than undo, flip and basic layers, but I think it is perfectly fine for doodling. Unfortunately it doesn't save in PSD if you wish to preserve layers, but I think you can use Gimp to convert. For my February fanart I just saved in PNG for final tweak in Photoshop. -
I tried to imagine winter in Croatoa. I thought the giant in diapers would freeze to death.
This composition is really boring but I didn't have the time to start over.
I painted it with a free program called MyPaint except for level adjustments with Photoshop at the end. -
I have had an idea for weeks, but never got started. I can't seem to get interested. Maybe I will do something tomorrow...if you are eliminated, are you out for the year or can you come back in April?

I just made a Facebook account to vote. I didn't like that I had to give Talenthouse the permission to access my info, email me, and post on my wall (whatever that means).
I voted for TA too while I was at it.It looks like they allow multiple voting.

Thanks for sharing! I bought it to use with Blender. It looks like they are still taking orders for another hour or so.

I will probably have to drop out after June (will be going to a 3d animation school), but here's my entry anyway.
-
Thanks VexXxa!
I spent most of the week learning Blender. Made this from scratch today following this tutorial:
http://vimeo.com/4622616
It's pretty amazing what can be done in Blender. I can't wait to learn character rigging and animation and all that stuff. -
So I started learning Blender after I saw Primantiss' thread, and I'm hooked!
I'm going through the tutorials and projects here:
http://www.gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html
This castle was modelled following step by step instructions, and I added the bridge on my own.
And my first 3d bust:
Unfortunately I closed the program by mistake without saving so I couldn't get different views. At least I still have my base object and this is what it looked like before I messed around in sculpt mode. The upper part of his skull is still pretty much a cube.
I will try to do some coh related stuff as I learn more. -
Does your kid have any coloring books? Stuff like these would be fun for people to watch as well as enlightening to see the process from simple lines to a full painting.

Hey those are cool! Sorry I'm a 3d noob...do you have the figure as a base mesh and just add costume parts to it?
I got Blender and spent the afternoon learning the very very basics. These links helped me get up and going pretty quick, although I'm still clueless about most of its functions.

Do you know of other good Blender resources? I was so delighted when I saw the sculpt mode. I've wanted to try Zbrush for a long time but couldn't justify investing hundreds of dollars. I hope Blender can be a poor man's Zbrush.
Ok, sorry for hijacking your thread. Keep it up! -

I decided to take a different approach...hopefully for the better.
Finally started learning anatomy. I have always been intimidated by all the bones and muscles, but I guess you just gotta suck it up. -
Hehe, she does kinda look like Soul Train.
Got started on my July fanart entry.
Despite what you might have been led to believe about how Sister Psyche maintains her age-defying appearance, the truth is it wouldn't have been possible without the power of science. See, everyday at midnight Sister Psyche injects herself with a secret Crey serum.
The origin of the serum actually goes back to the chemical warfare during the first World War. A group of American military scientists discovered a deadly formula the effects of which were so horrifying you wouln't wish it on your worst enemy. Fortunately, the war was over before it was put to use.
Crey Industries acquired the formula at a later date, and continued research revealed the unexpected anti-aging effect. Unfortunately, even a very small dose causes excruciating pain, so there was no potential for mass marketing as a beauty product. However, there was one woman who became aware of its existence, and had the sheer willpower to subdue pain: Sister Psyche, of course. In exchange for a lifetime supply of the serum, Sister Psyche agreed not to interfere with Crey Industries' major operations.
The figure in the foreground is going to be Sister Psyche's true form, a wrinkled old lady, and the reflected image is going to be what she allows others to see. -
How's everyone's entry coming along? The deadline is creeping up on us.
I just got an idea, but need to confirm a detail. Am I right that Ms. Liberty is actually much older than her appearance? I looked up but wasn't able to find her actual age, the only clue being Statesman is her grandfather and he's been around for a long time. Or am I confusing her with Sister Psyche, whose bio states that "she does not age physically while in another's mind"?
If they both are much older than they look, who do you guys think is a better symbol for timeless beauty? -
Quote:The workshop was awesome, but I got depressed at the end when I realized that I will be on my own after having worked with an amazing mentor for nine intense weeks. I am finally starting to get back on track now. I guess I am just not very well disciplined.Trying to get back in the mood?!? How did the Robert Chang workshop go?
My apologies to Comrade Hero because I fell off the radar for a while without finishing that gift art. I think I will actually put it on hold for a little longer and learn some proper anatomy first. At the moment I don't even know the major muscle groups.
I started doing photo studies from some fashion magazines at issuu.com. Gave this one a Statesman ear ring so I can post here.

I've been trying to get back in the mood to draw stuff. Found an internet based drawing tool called Harmony, and I really like to play around with it. (It works best on Google Chrome for me, and doesn't work at all on IE.)
A couple of bike sketches from photo refs using Harmony:
And my entry for TA's contest:
-
What really put things into perspective for me was when I visited the pvp forums. We have our differences, but art forum at its worst is still more civil than some pvp posters average post.
Love the expressions in those studies, Bayani. -
Well, Comrade Hero is up for seeing the progress so far, so here it is:
I am sort of doing this as my final image for the Robert Chang class. I liked the black and white thumbnails, but it was brought up that it looked like they were flying too low. I tried repositioning the characters and free transforming the background like crazy, but I wasn't happy with the results.
I redid the background with a birds eye view. I was avoiding using that view because I wanted to show the sky, but then I realized if I make the globe shiny reflective metal, I can still show the colors of the sky. Robert thought that was clever, kind like a composition within a composition.
Robert suggested reversing the direction of the sun, so I tried it. I do think their faces look a lot better lit by the sun. I also moved the city hall so it is close to the center of the street and not right next to the road. The background is still largely unfinished, and I need to work more on the characters as well. -
Thanks Night Hornet.
BW, your compliment and analysis of the composition came as a bit of surprise. Composition has been one of the most mysterious subjects for me. I think I started thinking harder about it when you indirectly referred to my February fanart entry and said it was a very basic composition and most visual artists will try to accomplish more. In his assessment of my previous work, Robert Chang said (among other things) my composition was weak, both in layout and tonal arrangements. Composition was the topic for the second week of the class. I guess I am starting to make some progress.
I agree with the things you said in the second paragraph. It's challenging for me to find the right balance. When I got the idea in my head, I saw the scene zoomed in on the lb with clear sign of frustration on his face. But when I started sketching, I realized that most of the chaser would be cut off if I zoom in on his face.
Fireheart, I'm still only trying to visualize the scene, so it is easy to make major changes at this stage. In the first thumbnail, I was going for atmospheric look with deep perspective. I did new thumbnails with more direct size comparison.
Thanks CR. If I go with the first thumbnail, I will try the things you mentioned.
I am not sure if I like these very much. I think these will need to be cropped differently or more elements will need to be added to make the composition better, but just not sure how.
Bubbawheat, it could be 1.49 million inf per gallon.
U-Naught, that's a brilliant idea! My mind was so preoccupied with the hot chick rule that it didn't occur to me I could have hot chicks. If I go with one of the second thumbnails, loading the flier with a bunch of hot chicks will be an easy way to avoid designing the interior.
