Quote:That's funny that you would bring code into this given that I've been a software engineer IRL for most of the last 20 years. You asserted without evidence that every time the developers do replace one thing with another, it would be more simple to add the new thing without removing the old thing. In this particular case, it is notable that every other power that has an alternate animation has only one alternate animation. I can conceive of a number of reasons why this should be so, and why adding a third would be non-trivial. It is unfortunate when the developers decide to remove anything from the game - for just about anything in the game, you could probably find someone who loves that thing dearly just the way it is, and I think they're not unaware of that. But saying that the choice to add instead of replace is always simple misrepresents the situation.
More pithily: standard code rant plus standard design rant.
Since I didn't bother to approach my post from a strict software point of view I obviously glossed over the ramifications of what it would have actually taken to retain the previous animation in favor of a more general point about how there are multiple examples where the Devs have chosen to replace options instead of add new ones. While SIMPLY adding a second thigh-hi boot option in the costume editor menus may have been relatively easier to implement than a third power animation, I still think the general philosophical point of "not cheesing off customers regardless of the code involved" still applies regardless.
It's likely the limitation of the software that you assumed exists kept them from retaining the third animation. But that doesn't address the larger issue at hand: if there is such a limitation then that needs to be tackled eventually, or at least before they start swapping one animation for another in other cases.
There might be a "standard code rant applies" here. But I think the Devs were also in a position where they made, potentially, the lesser of two choices and continued the precedent of making shortcut decisions in these cases instead of fixing the core problems involved. -
Quote:I think you answered your own question about why they opted to go for TOS Trek instead of JJTrek.I'm surprised they're not doing JJTrek Potato Heads, since that's the hottest Trek property at the moment. I guess these are pretty much for the die-hard collectors' market.
Also, <insert Potato Head Shatner toupee joke here>

According to the rules established by the Devs themselves the official start date of the Vet award system was April 28, 2004. It's not supposed to matter whether you started during the Headstart period or had an account set up prior to that date. The official 81st month anniversary date of this game is January 28th, 2011. The official anniversaries have always been set on the "28ths" of their respective months (April, July, October and January).
Having said all that it has long been known that there are a few people out there who get the latest Vet award several days or even weeks earlier than the established anniversary dates. For some reason the Devs either can't fix these problem or won't fix them. It has never really been established why this is the case - perhaps having a system that actually applies the rules fairly to EVERYONE is just too much of a hassle for them to bother with. Clearly something's messed up with their account databases and they've been that way pretty much since the beginning of the Vet award system.
Basically we're left with a system that let's some people be luckier than others.
Either you're one of the few or not. *shrugs*
Hope that helps. -

Ironically I can live with all those current email limitations/restrictions but the one that bothers me the most that you didn't mention is that characters have to be level 10 before they can send emails.
Now I completely understand why that restriction exists in general because it helps prevent RMT spammers from sending emails to strangers with quickly created characters. But why would there need to be such a restriction on one of my own low level characters sending email to another one of my own characters?
I have a number of low level "mule" characters that I've used for years (even prior to the markets) to hold items for my other active characters. But with this level 10 restriction it makes it very hard to move things back and forth between my own characters without wasting the time to PL a mule up to level 10.
If the Devs just made it so any character you own can send email to any other character you own regardless of level I'd be happy enough.

Quote:Yeah, but clearly he's working in a "secret/hidden/remote" location buried deep in the jungle. Not really sure what that has to do with getting reliable commuter transport to a wilderness area.Isn't the Red Dwarf Tribute Scientist up there working for Arachnos? The guy with a working inter-dimensional portal he somehow got working in some old temple ruins.

Quote:As I implied earlier the trope of these kinds of "three faction" relationships in stories is hardly new. Heck you could probably shoehorn the Elves/Orcs/Humans from LotR into that dynamic if you really wanted to.Oh, you know what? I'm suddenly reminded of a Clifford D. Simak novel that has a technological group, a psychic group and a biological group all competing and/or cooperating to cause or prevent a collision between two universes. It's older than I am, so probably 1950s to early 1960s.

Quote:A ferry doesn't really make any sense for the north end of Nerva. Ferries run between established civilized areas - the north end of Nerva is anything but an "established civilized" area.Having to travel 2 miles in Nerva can be a pain in the butt.
A ferry up there would rock! Nerva is like the equivalent of IP.
It might make sense for one of the black helicopters to run up to the south end of Primeva as an Arachnos beachhead, but anything much farther north than that doesn't fit for what's meant to be an "outback" area. -
Quote:Thankfully we do at least have this cumbersome save/load workaround.Personally I just have a bunch of different costumes saved and I switch when the mood strikes me.
There were many years there when we didn't even have that.
But I openly call it a "cumbersome" workaround to having more costume slots because it can be a complete pain to have to go to a tailor just to "access" your extended wardrobe when you want to do something like take a helmet off or toggle an aura.
There is a prime example of another superhero MMO out there that supports both saving/loading costumes AND the ability to purchase extra costume slots for characters. There's really no justifiable reason why this game couldn't implement both features as well. -
Quote:Yeah I can accept that blanket generic excuse for many NPC costume items (like the sybils' dresses) because of the limitations of the "cape" animation attachment points and whatnot. Not gonna happen anytime soon. As explained by Sexy Jay, the NPC character model animation rigs that use those costume pieces are built differently than the ones used by the player models. More than likely, the only way one will get those costume pieces would be as a costume code that turned you into a generic sybil.
But when it comes to the superhero "fashion model" and her unique belt and boots I think that excuse breaks down and becomes very close to just being typical Dev BS. There's nothing overtly special about the shape/texture of those items as compared to anything we already have in the costume editor. In the case of these items we aren't prevented from having them because of limitations in the character models - we aren't able to use them simply because the Devs have arbitrarily said so.
I know the Devs like to keep many items as "NPC only" just to keep them unique. But the irony of this case with the "fashion model" is that her purpose in the game was to be a FASHION MODEL, someone who supposedly was modeling clothing that the public (in this case player character superheroes) were meant to get access to. The fact that the Devs have specifically kept the items from this one NPC restricted is almost laughable when you realize that.

Quote:You did a great job with these pics. You've really captured their "comic book assets" quite well. They should give us costume emotes like they did for Halloween. The Sybils and the models from the Ouro Flashback would be cool.
You could probably get a job creating comic book cover art with these.
I've been jonesing for those boots for years now. The rest of her outfit is cool but I'd probably use those boots on at least a half-a-dozen alts if I could.

Quote:Based on this new data point (Spring Fling starting the 10th) I've already amended my original prediction of when Issue 19.5 is launching (which was either the 1st, 8th or 15th) back to now either the 1st or the 8th. Given that they might decide to open up the current 19.5 closed beta to be open for a bit the 8th is now looking like the most likely date.HELLO? Nobody is making the obvious comment here. Issue 19.5 (Strike Pack) is to launch in 'Early February" and the do not publish during an event because of the code. So it is HOPEFULLY safe to assume that 19.5 will drop BEFORE Feb. 10th.
Right?

Quote:Congrats Snow.I am now officially done getting all badges available to me (except Bug Hunter) on my badge character, White Succubus, until my next vet reward or they introduce new badges. 1,194 badges on this character.

Based on what they said about Issue 19.5 it looks like we're going to have new WST badges to earn in just a couple of weeks.

Quote:The Devs seem to have a bad habit of REPLACING previous options instead of simply ADDING new options to the game. I'm looking at you female thigh-hi boots that were changed several years after the game went live.Damn it to hell, I liked that old, new animation. Is there some reason the devs outright replaced it instead of adding it as a new option?
It's not that I hate the new version - I just think it would've been so much cooler if we had access to BOTH versions so that we could choose which ones we liked better.
-
Yeah I'd agree that the Rikti/DE/Malta relationship to the Protoss/Zerg/Terran groups is probably more of a "common sci-fi/comic book archetypes" coincidence than a direct shout out from this game to Starcraft. Still it's cool that we have connections to other great references like that.

If you're looking for more direct "shout outs" to other sources there are plenty to find.
For example the Seers in Praetoria are fairly obviously based (to me at least) on Agatha from Minority Report:

Quote:Considering that drug smugglers have used pretty much every type of machine capable of carrying drugs up to and including unmanned long-ranged submarines the idea that they'd try catapults doesn't really surprise me all that much. I'll bet at some point they'll even try to use short or intermediate ranged ballistic missiles to toss drugs over the border and we'll overreact by nuking Mexico in response.I would be willing to bet money that they have used it successfully in the past is the funny part IMO.

Quote:And with that I'll say BINGO! and bid you all a fond farewell.I think it's perfectly balanced right now. My Heroes and Villains earn A merits, which grant better rewards. My Rogues and Vigilantes have the ability to run any Task/Strike Force on either side, which means they are earning Shards much faster.

Quote:Yes I actually have been playing Devs' Devil's Advocate in this thread to encourage you to come up with better ways to support your relatively flimsy position. I'm glad you finally realized that.Funny how now, she's suddenly playing "dev's advocate". And apparently has always been!
-
Quote:I never claimed to be a Dev (and as you say thank god for that).Your persistently condescending attitude is legend. Don't think that I haven't noticed it over the years.
Well thank the gods that you're not a dev. I think if you were, I'd have stopped playing this game a long time ago. Thankfully, the devs have much cooler heads and actually listen to what the players actually have to say.
So please stop doing them a favor, and start speaking for yourself. I hear that you're quite good at that.
The reasons why we think it's imbalanced are already in this thread (which you've cleverly derailed, congrats!). I'm not going to waste my time repeating them over and over again just so you can continue to keep your fingers in your ears while screaming very loud.
But I'm willing to consider myself self-important enough to speculate that since you've failed to convince me of the necessity of your suggestions here I'm more than positive you will fail to convince any Dev either. If anything please grant my many years of "persistently condescending attitude" on these forums that much respect.

Quote:Your position on this subject doesn't upset me. I don't really care if you think there's a problem to be fixed here or not. My main concern is the potential waste of Dev time to "tweak" a situation that has no game effect on you, me or the moon just to get an abstract playerbase ratio from something like 70/30 to 60/40. If you can honestly tell me how that much of a slight change would radically improve anyone's personal enjoyment of this game I'd be more that perfectly willing to hear it and even lead the charge to suggest to the Devs that they waste valuable time on it.Entirely possible. Luckily, I haven't put any more effort into worrying about it than typing some forum postings. Given that this is a thread titled "First Impressions of the 'Gray' Alignments", it seemed kind of apropos to talk about it here even if it upset you to read about it.
Those numbers do show an unequal distribution of players relative to alignments. That much is true. What you've failed to do so far is explain to me why that is a problem to be solved. Why must it be more equal? What benefit as a player would you directly gain from that? Please, all joking aside, I want you to explain it to me. I really do. Because if you can actually explain it to me then you might have a snowball's chance in hell of explaining it to the Devs.
-
Quote:I understand that you "consider" what we've been talking about here as a problem to be fixed. Points of view are funny like that.Dude, if you don't know what the problem is after it's been explained to you time and again just in this thread alone, then that's clear evidence that you're just completely unwilling to even listen in the first place.
I'm sorry we're disturbing your wonderful utopia here, but seeing as both me and Jophiel have been playing this game for nearly as long as you have, I say that should give our observations a little weight.
In the meantime, I've totally stopped taking you seriously. Well, maybe I never did.
I have simply being trying to get you to understand that if you seriously want to get the Devs to listen to you you're going to have to do a whole lot better job stating your case. You can barely get past me by being semi-insulting to me personally as someone you don't want to take "seriously" anymore. If you can't even get past me and my mediocre defense of the Devs' system how would you ever convince a Dev? -
Quote:I find the fact that the alignment spread in the game is 77/23 as a mere bit in interesting trivia. I don't see it as a "problem" to be solved and I dare say the Devs are busy enough with other things that they aren't going to be treating as a game-breaking problem either. Mountain, meet molehill. You're really trying hard to move the goalposts here. I never said the game was "ruined". However, having poorly balanced AT's does impact the number of viable choices I have in the game and I would rather that the AT's were, in their own ways, equally desirable (although not equal in function). Realizing that this isn't possible, I'm happy to settle for "roughly equal".
AT's that are infrequently played should be reviewed to determine why people don't want to play them and "fixed" to make them more desireable, hence increasing the number of viable options people have while playing. Playing an AT you don't find desirable should not be considered a "viable" option. -
Quote:I've been trying to divine a justification from you other than "I want it" and I haven't seen it yet in this thread. If you want to have any chance to make your case to the Devs over this you're going to have to do a whole lot better than that. Just trying to be helpful here.I might, if I knew you would actually listen. You've proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that you would not.
Do please go on with your tyrannical and egocentric rants. They are most entertaining.
