Oh hello there. A UK resident formally of Defiant EU I actually play on Virtue Shard now or at least for a little while. I swing by here now to catch up with some people I knew and keep up with the goings on of my old stomping ground.
Have to say I do enjoy it there. And not just because of the time difference but I always find someone online no matter what time due to the fact the Na servers is more popluated. When I play in the moring I meet quite a few people who must be playing in the small hours of the morning. And on the whole I find it friendly and helpful. -
Yes it is amusing the idea it means they are not just homosexual but horribly primiscous and will roger anything given the chance. I am straight and even I find that one funny.
Something someone touched on earlier and that was with regard to sterotypes. I know myself I grw up with the typical comedy image of a camp "woofter" on TV. But funny thing is I guess because I leanred not to beleive in TV I sort of figured that yes gays did exist but they wernt really effemanate. hat was just a common joke to overexagerate the point a gay character was being prtrayed. I guess you could call this reverse naivity in a way.
It wasnt until my late teens I actually met a rather camp gay guy and my immediate reaction was suprise. Why? Because I didnt beleive anyone who was truly gay had those mannerisms. At first I thought he must have been play acting and joking around. But no that was him of course. Naturally it was for me to accept him and learn from the experience as I did and sure enough I met other camp people. And as has been pointed out not all camp people are gay. I digress a little here but it seems we cant remind ourselves enough we cant judge a book by its cover all the time.
But I find it interesting as how the debate has been raised that even GLBT can also expect someone to behave a certain way. ie think that someone who is "straight acting" (Id call it being themselves as everyone ought to be) ought to be more camp or whatever and must be trying to fit in. -
Quote:Very good point very well made. That's actually an interesting item of note. "European" isn't a national identity and Europeans don't share common language or culture. As such, aside from the notion of preserving the feel of a separate European forum as existed before the merge, it seems kind of... Ridiculous to have a "lounge" especially for Europeans as though they weren't as different between each other as they are from the Americans.
When the offer to move to the EU servers came out, I refused it out of hand, even though I live in Europe. Why? Well, why would I move? I speak English and Bulgarian and, sadly, do not speak "European" so the German and French servers would be locked to me. Why, then, would I want to trade 11 servers that speak a language I can understand for 2!!! servers that speak that language? It didn't make sense to lump Europeans in the same basket then and it doesn't make sense to do so now. So what if I'm 7-10 time zones ahead of the bulk of the players? I'm 1-2 time zones ahead of most other Europeans anyway.
I guess my point is that this division between Americans and Europeans is silly. Not only are Europeans nothing like each other just within Europe, but Americans are probably just as diverse within the US. -
Which I think I aluuded to with the I know something you dont but since it was clear then well put.

Quote:Been and teied WoW more than once and never got on with it. Something about it just seems empty for me I cant put my finger on it.I'm looking forward to Aion... but I'll more than likely never leave CoH unless I really have to.
Even when I gave up on playing for a few months and went to WoW... I still came back, just because of the fun... WoW just didn't have Endgame... it had the DAILY GRIIIIIIIIIIIIND. lol
CoH might not have much Endgame either, but at least I don't have to contend with a guild/SG drama every weekend. :P
Aion is interesting me and I already have my Champions Online preoredered. Im in a bind with money so that will dicate whether I preorder Aion or not. Likely only one of them will win even if it truns out I like both. -

Speaking of cultural differences and embracing them I rarely weats deserts and sweet treats but I just finished a tofee cupcake which was delish and a nice chocolate brownie. Occurs to me I never had the latter before.

Quote:LMAO. Some things never change eh? Yeah I didnt bother with many games at all for months. Then picked up a 360 and slowly began looking at other MMOs. I think we chatted a bit on that.I keep toying with other games but I get annoyed and come back to Icon, I mean COH
Was tracking a Shadowrun MMO that had promise until Microshaft sent then a cease and decist. There is only EvE and WAR that I really like. Even then I dont sub to either. And WAR is limted appeal. Less said about Tabula Rasa and Age of Conan the better. -
Quote:Bad Scarlet_Shocker. Bad. Still made me laugh though.Actually in the context of this thread, I can say with a degree of certainty that "winking" is surely a typo
Oddly enough I just read a twitter about a new singing to my local football team (no not soccer its football, that thing thats played over there is just a varient of celtic football anyway same as rugby). He is actually a stirker for the US national team and in his twitter he more or less came out and said he was probably going to a premier league club and his forts game would in all liklihood be against chelsea *wink* *wink*. So that reminded me of another connotation of winking "I know somethign you dont" or "Ill tell you something descreetly without actually spelling it out".
Sure people wink when flirting but in my experiance less so. But it could be said its the basis of flortatous winking. A suggestion you would like to express something discreetly.
Quote:Metric is only evil if you have a succession of governments (such as in the UK) that will not implement the system fully and so you get a half-baked compromise where some things are measured in metric, others in imperial.
most things sold by weight are sold in metric. Most volume is calculated in metric (but you buy a pint in a pub, although spirits are sold in 60cl)
Distance is generally taught in metric, metres, centimetres, etc but roads are calculated in miles. Petrol (gas to you NA lot) is sold in litres, so trying to work out your fuel economy is a frikkin nightmare. -
Quote:And I have noted that the main disagreements have actually been with EU users. Hows that for irony? This thread remind me of the scene in Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country where the Klingons dine aboard the Enterprise, and everything is going fairly well until biases start creeping in and arguments break out.
As Chancellor Gorkon said (in so many words): "Well, this was nice but clearly we have some way to go."
To the undiscovered land that is the new forums!

Here is something I intended to take up two weeks ago on the forums upon returning as soon as I noticed it was still there.
Before I left I7 introduced something to endurance which meant alot of ATs even ones who didnt have endurance problems now ran out and broke down faster than an old Russian Plastic car.
I was under the impression this was a bug. But as my character which was pretty much a copy of my old MA scrapper barring he is now Will and not regen is constantly having to stop years later. I see no possible locgical reason for this. The stock answer is balance of course. But what is it balancing? All I am doing is taking longer to complete a mission and spending a fortune on blue insps as well as hoarding my team mates. As I recall all my charcters got a whack with this but I was really suprosed scrappers have this disruption in flow.
If they cant scrap or hit things they cant do anything. I am not that suprosed other ATs had the issue particularly support characters. Although as I say thye all got this end use hike and I think it went way too far. But I guess I would like at least an explanation if I cant convice a change. -
Quote:See now when you said Miami was the hone of all strange news my immediate response was "isnt that California?" Well I gues it depends on personal opinion and experianece.Ages ago, us merikans had a poker game... I won Europe. All of it, apparently.
They got mad at me when I kept dropping y'all on my enemies... I think that's why they gave me massive, shiney, orbital space cannons of doomity doom...
By the way, I hope no one was hurt in the prior dropping of Europe. Except California. Them I don't mind hurtin. -
Quote:If you are goin to quote and respnd to my posts please have the courtesy to take what I said in context or not at all. You know this thread has fast turned into the CaptainMan show as I have observed you posting after post refuting peoples posts and comments and deliberately ruffling feathers. I know this was going to be something in your repetoire.Well you're entitled to your opinion of course, but I disagree, and think that comparing the movie industry to swallowing poisons is a little extreme lol.
I never said the movie industry was like swallowing poison. I said the dismissive attitude shown by hollywood and other ignorant type casting and acceptance of type casting is beyond amusement. Expecially given in this age when acess to information and research is so easy. In reality there is no excuse for it. And its irroisponsible. Now while I beleive it can only hurt you of you let it, it doesnt mean that those people are ignorant.
My comment was that I have noticed this attitude to non US nations and cultures in mainstraim US media has become less tolerated and rubbed more people up the wrong way. My anology was that instead of letting it bounce off people are finding a need to speak up and each instance instead of being less cause for irritation is quite the opposite. Alotnof people are feeling enough is enough. I say that being the case dont go to the movies or watch TV. Of course we know that wont happen. -
Quote:New account is because this one is a US account. I begun playing on the Virtue server with some new friends I met while while looking for a prelaunch group for a certain best not mentioned here up and coming superhero game. Most of them are in the US so I opened a new account there. A cool multinational bunch actually and more crativity goes on than gaming.Oh, I surely DO remember you, and vaguely, the disagreement about that audio comic.
I was wondering actually, how come the new account? Oh, and welcome back.
That and I also get to avoid all the housework of clearing up an old 3 year account. Makes me shiver the thought of 3 years dust and cob webs an all. -
Quote:Again your points are only valid when taking into account you are talking about piss water otherwise known as lager. I meant |REAL beer. As far as Im concerned I dont care if most of the world does class lager as beer. Or indeed only has this and considers it the only meaning of beer. To me it isnt :PAs an inhabitant of Belgium I find it quite comical to hear Brits and Americans argue over who has the best beer. The Germans, heck, even the DUTCH, have better beers than you lot! But the true masters of beer will always be the Belgians. Now do me a favour and stop calling your lukewarm, foamless sewage water 'beer' and we'll get along fine
*poors himself a nice, rich Westmalle Tripple*
Get some bitter or a pint of smooth down you folks or better yet some real ale. That is real beer and the earliest form of it. -
Oh two of my favourites still around. Wolfie and Psygon.
Yeah Im ok. The keeping well is debatable. But whats new?
Wow Id have thought you would have long left here Psygon but nice to see I get the chance to catch you again. *hugs*
So has nothing taken your interest other than CpX? Or just got nothing better to do? :P -
Quote:Ill second this. Basically Mr Captainman if you have a spare... oooh I dont know... week I can probably explain some experiances myself as I have a good memory. I came to Eu and played on the defiant server just after I4 release. And stayed until just a few weeks after I7. I returned to the game as of two weeks ago but went to the US servers to play with some of my friends there after a 3 year break from the game. Already I am aware of some startling differences. And Ill say again as far as instnces of inequality with the EU/US community issue I have seen enough to know it exists. And I have been away for three years. To understand it fully, you would have needed to be a member of the EU community for a while. Part of the feeling is the almost non-existent dev interaction; something that's always kinda annoyed many of us, especially the more vocal forum members, another is that our suggestions are pretty much universally ignored, another is the fact that US and EU GM's run on different rules completely, with you having the much better deal.
In fact, on that side, one of our members carried out an experiment. He accidentally deleted one of his characters EU side, and was told by a GM that it was policy not to restore deleted chars. Obviously that annoyed him greatly as he KNEW that wasn't the case in the US. So, he created a US account, made a character, then deleted it and petitioned the GM's. His character was restored with no quibbles whatsoever. Nice, eh?
Another is that yes, our game IS significantly more laggy than the American one, and in fact, in the UK at least, we can get a FAR better connection to the US servers than we can to our own, which is ridiculous. Nothing has EVER been done to address this, despite MANY complaints.
Hell, we even got Global Chat nearly a full YEAR after it was launched in the US...
This thing with GrinningSpades name is just one more thing to add to it all. It blatantly sends out the message that US sensibilities are more important than EU ones.
EDIT: I'd point out though, that this isn't by any means, a universal feeling among EU players, but it IS felt among quite a few.
Im sure the likes of FFM here can easily fill you in on example after another. And I can tell you as someone I recall from my old EU days he is a posrter name I remember as being worthy of respect. (Told you twice now have a good memmory... though I dont think FFM< remembers me and a particular spat I had with a poster named Colluseum when pitching an audio comic idea). -
Quote:Some films are good for false portrayals, Notting Hill, where are the black people? I don't think that was an american film but I think it can be used to show it happens everywhere.
What about the U-boat film, U-571 where apparently it was the americans who seized the enigma machine, or the great escape with wait for it an american leading it. I think we are alright with many things but rewriting history like that is the ultimate kick in the nuts. I don't know why they even let U-571 enter our cinemas, no one I knew would watch it.
I think watching films we can tell what Brits may or may not do and our noses aren't anymore dirty than anyone elses' in small groups but collectively we tend to be of a certain way.
That British Parachutist in the latest Star Trek film was a bit over the top. We have jokes about our Paras when it comes to contemplating death but even they know when to pull the chute.Quote:I can see i'm going to have to mwntally add 'IMO' to all of FFMs posts for him and my own sanity(pls note smiley)
IMO Hero 1s an awesome name.
My opinion of U-571 is that brits who rail against its US slant miss out on appreciating what it actually is: an awesome submarine movie, not a historically accurate film.
Eco
Oh beleive me I was thinking about those examples. I can even add Memphis Belle. And what about Saving Private Ryan? Not a single other allies solider in sight. Its even said in the movie "Mongomery's gone home" and that is how they write everyone else out. But I actually decied to stop there. One thing at a time eh? -
Quote:Yeah and learn to drink some real beer instead of that fizzy pop stuff. And tha goes for my fellow Euros here too drinking lager. Cant beat a bitter or an ale. well that said I quit drinking ears ago but that was my thing. And joking aside Id recommend trying it just the once at least. The question is, would Damz want mint sauce with that? Or lard?!
To our American overlo... errr I mean friends! - you can keep your beer and biscuits (that'll confuse 'em!) - or preferably import some of our superior varieties! - but please continue to send over the southern fried chicken and the key lime pies!
I almost said you can keep your chocolate too, but it appears that Galaxy chocolate may have originated in Chicago - for that I can almost forgive your entire nation for the Hershey bar I tasted in 2005 ...blech.
Starbucks... meh. I find your lack of tea rooms most disturbing! -
I dont od fantasy leagues. Too confusing. But I am a big lover of the beautiful game. Mind its been an odd few weeks for me. Anticipation and dread as the transfer market has been somewhat unkind to my local outfit. And given the place they finished lat year I can only hope some thing will pick up. Especially after the Premier League Trophy in China last week.
Quote:The Prenier league is the best and most entertaining in the world. So I dont agree its boring. Even our Championship League football (The league below it) has some decent teams and good quality football. But I agree with you about the money and player thing totally. But I choose not to get involved and let it spoil it for me.I got your gesture in brotherhood right here...
Premier League is boring. Too many millionaires who don't know what to do with their money. Mind you, it's the same problem in most premier divisions in the major football nations. Too many foreign 'stars', too little homegrown talent. It's not really 'my club' anymore when only two or three of the guys on the pitch are from the club's own talent pool and the others are bought mercenaries who'd play for any club. There are exceptions like Hungarian Pal Dardai who's played for Hertha BSC Berlin for some 13 years in a row now, but just look at the crap going down in Spain these days to see what I mean.
Quote:Talking about the incredibly boring sport of football (or any form of reality TV) is probably one sure way of keeping people out of the Lounge.
And football has more than two weeks as any football fan will tell you while trying to cope with their withdrawl symptoms.

Dont wanna go home, Dont wanna go hooooooome. This the best trip- Ive ever been on -

Quote:Again I dont care for mushy peas either. But I do know of others that so.I'm surprised no one's yet pointed out that the guy saying he'd "never heard anyone say they'd really fancy some mushy peas" is from WALES where they barely even eat fish and chips let alone mushy peas and often despise everything to do with England
We all know what mushy peas would be replaced with in that sentence
Ill tell you something Im surw alot of you even my fellow English forums users may not be familar with. Something called a "Patty". Is very popular here in Hull. My borther lives in Leeds which isnt too far away and when he brings his family here they often make a point of getting some as they cant get them anywhere else. -
Quote:Perhaps that is merely how you personally interpret it? Personally to me you arw a person and thats the top. middle and bottom of it. I dont think in no way should you hide who you are I have had my own instances of that in my life. Beleive me growing up and living where I do you dont have to be very different to be considered an outcast. But I simply am who I am and dont beleive I shoud hide my feeling or beleifs/opinions etc. But that ios not the same as crowing them at the top of my voice to make a statement. Or feel i have to defend my identity all the time.See now I actually dislike 'straight acting'. To me it is derogatory. It suggests that in order to 'fit in' and be 'normal' you have to act as if you're straight. And also suggests that sexuality is all about acting a role.
I'm not suggesting that sexuality is the utmost important thing, rather I'm saying that sexuality is a part of me and not something I turn on and off to please other people.
Also, during these discussions it does become an important thing to me. It's a subject (gay identity) that I feel very passionately about.
I'm not sure if the OP has found an SG that they'd like to join. The offer still stands of making one. Union/Defiant? And can you cope with a hopeless altaholic? -
Quote:Well actually I was going to say its a dismissive to brush the US being calling them all Yanks. And thats the thing. I dont. heh maybe its anual of me but I know that term is only relevent to use if you are from the south of the US and talking about the north. Even then I would think its outdated. Mind I know it goes on though. And to be fair back, we just talk about Americans or possibly yanks (in British slang yank usually just denotes american and doesn't have anything to do with historic North/South divisions).
I'm not sure how good it is, but often I try to think of the US more like the UK or a federal EU would be. Each US state (including the ones that aren't actually states!) is effectively a seperate country and many dwarf the size (and economy) of true countries...
So referring to americans as some form of single mass is probably a grosser (over-)generalisation than referring to the assorted peoples of UK/Britain as Brits.
Its not so much the term as sometimes in context it is done with ignorance. But more to my point was that its the sterotypical "Brit" that gets portrayed that has nothing to do with most of us at all. I think in all honesty its the same mentality and ignorance that made people think it was ok to portray blacks and Chinese in those old movies as idiots or servants or both. You know what I mean if I say its a four letter word beginnning with C and ending with N. That wasnt funny and was a bad and innacurate portrayal of Black people and so is the typical image of "brits" shown in so many American movies and TV shows. -
Something very dark inside me tells me it would be worth it. And when we run out of those we could go on to hunt makers and volunteers for reality TV shows?
