Big stars are expensive, and paying for the TV time so that people actually see them is even moreso.
  2. Well as I said above, I don't think it would happen often enough or last long enough to cause big problems. Unless a group of people specifically did something together known to give an event later, and then stood around together until it popped, I don't see it being a big issue.

Maybe it could work like the Turrets in Bloody Bay. Every X minutes it checks to see if anyone eligible is in the area, and if there isn't already an event in existence. If both conditions are met, then it spawns one.

You're playing the wrong game then. It's here to stay, and it's only going to become more prevalent. Having to complete steps to achieve something is a basic premise of this kind of game.

What you're not realizing is that it's not just that interest in these subjects are niche. Fantasy is a lot bigger niche in any case, it's not even close. What attracts people to games is nostalgia, at least at first. If this game had been built around known properties of Marvel or DC it would have had a leg up, in that there would have been decades worth of fans wanting to recapture things they remember and felt from their youth.

WoW has that. It's got twenty years worth of games to build it's core userbase on. From there, Blizzard has its huge advertising machine, and everything else people have mentioned. It's an additive process.

And what you're really not getting is that it's not simply a matter of CoH doing the same things and getting a positive response. I'm sure there would be some response, but to be honest, most of the people out there who would play a game like this, already have. There's not going to be a massive increase in players just by mimicking WoW's tactics.

WoW is kind of a perfect storm of factors leading to it's success, and nothing is going to come close to that unless and until Blizzard screws something else, or they decide to move on to something not-WoW.

The only game on the horizon that even has a prayer of coming close would be SW:TOR, and even then it's a dicey thing.
  6. Yeah, defense bonuses are the easy way out in my mind, and Damage Resistance coming from enhanced sense doesn't even make sense to me.

If they did a set, then I'd want it to be something that is useful, but not necessarily in combat.

Yup, that's why I proposed something like that above. I'd rather not just create things out of nowhere though. Items created for the AH should have been earned by a player, but if they chose to vendor it instead, then there's a chance the background script will catch it and put it on the AH.

A straight up auto stocker could be abused by someone with a lot of bid slots and a rough idea of what doesn't sell, if not done carefully. That's why I think auto expiring bids and sales is still a good idea. If someone wants to shotgun the market on 54 alts, make him do it every 2-3 days
  8. Yeah, I'd like to reiterate that I envision this as not happening to any particular character that often. Unless of course, they make a system that works such that if someone wants it to happen to their character (for RP reasons) then they can do certain things to make it more frequent. Even then I see them as short duration events (5minutes at most, if you stay in the same spot). If you take off, then the group would quickly disperse so they don't bother other players.

  10. Just some thoughts I've been having recently about how our game doesn't have much fun and funny things happening sometimes.

Having NPCs walk by and say things related to your character is cool, but a bit stale and outdated. There's also a few times when the things coming from their mouths are wildly inappropriate (hello, Cimerora).

What I thought of is a way to kick up the NPC interactions a notch or two.

When it comes to ambush technology, the game has gotten a lot better over the years. The days of lvl 49 orphan mobs standing around Talos pwning lvl 21s are long gone. The conditions and behaviors of ambushes are even a little more elaborate.

So what I'm thinking is, it would be cool to have some little events that make our heroes or villains feel like they're part of the community. Maybe non combat Arachnos could salute when high level agents of different Patrons are on a mission (or when a VEAT player goes by).

Maybe if you spend a little time standing around chatting or shopping or what have you, a small group of civilians could either stop and gawk and snap pictures, or a full on Fanbush of adoring groupies could rush you. In the Rogue Isles maybe people who are fed up with your crimes could have a Flash Mob that comes and tosses rotten tomatoes (snowball power with a red effect) until a small fleet of Arbiter drones swoops in and teleports them to holding cells or they get scared off (terror inspired by a PBAoE?).

As for what triggers these events, I don't know. It should be a little more complicated than finishing a regular mission. Maybe completing an arc or TF?

A far more technical thought hit me as well. We have PPD camera drones, and the arena has Cam Bots for Observer mode. I imagine that TV News would make use of a similar device to get footage. I wonder if it would be possible to use an object/entity like that and combine it with the dynamic reflections we're getting in Ultra mode, or some kind of server side screenshot tech, and have the camera bots transmit an image that appears on screens elsewhere.

It would be cool if Atlas park blimp got a jumbo tron, or there were "we are watching you" screens all over Grandville. Or even just security rooms in bases or in indoor maps that showed actual images. It would be really cool to step into a Longbow observeration post and see your teammate as he is ghosting to the end or fighting some other foes. Come to think of it, it wouldn't be terribly different than cutscene technology. just a tiny image of a distant viewpoint instead of one that eats our whole screen and keeps us from moving.

Sure, because engaging in one of those acts absolutely and totally precludes someone from ever being able to engage in the other, now and for all time when teamed with your sainted self.

Hello, I am Lemur Lad, a sparkling and witty conversationalist on teams who also says gratz when someone levels. I think this means both halves of my brain function, but according to some they do not. Will you be my friend?
  12. That would be interesting, but I'm not sure it's useful On a mostly full map, it's not hard to find things that contribute to mission goals. Additionally, there are some maps that have all key goals marked on the map from the beginning. I really think a UI system like that shouldn't be dependent on power picks.

    Any thoughts?
It really depends on how superbeings came into existence and when. In CoH, they've been an integral part of society for decades. While they are very visible citizens, they're not unusual enough to freak people out when they show up. If superbeings suddenly appeared in our real world, it would be a different story entirely.
  14. While the ideas above may not be ideal there are some ideas that would do a better job at mimicking super powered senses.

Thermal Vision- a toggle that changes the lighting of the map (for you) and lights up non-undead/mechanical (unless they're hot, so Nemesis yes, PPD probably not) within a short distance, even through walls.

Telepresence- this would be the 4th power in a set, and would work a lot like Observer Mode works in Arena matches. To anyone who plays WoW, it would be like a Warlock's Eye of Kilrogg.

SuperTouch or Combat Sense- just thought of this one, which is specialized enough to be an auto power. Instead of a flat +per buff, or per debuff resistance, this power could allow for the blinded state to still take effect, but you'd still be able to target anything within melee range and hit with melee attacks.
  15. shouldnt be quoted either so someone has a shot at editing it....

Disconnecting that often is a completely separate issue. I recommend heading to the Tech Issues section. Your first steps are going to involve diagnosing your own machine and home network and internet service, because chances are it's not simply a problem with the game.
  17. I've had discussions with BaB about this kind of system back when he was in charge of revamping Hami.

Basically as long as there's only 1 (at the time, now a few) raid(s), engineering a [insert your solution of choice here] isn't practical. Everyone agrees it's a total bummer.

All that being said, in the more recent past, the devs have said that more zone events and big participation type things are in the works. Here's hoping that means more raid type things, and that they will look again at the system and implement a zone queue/raid grouping/disconnect buffer system.

Not quite that they've said. They've made it clear all existing content is designed around SOs and will stay that way. They've made no promises about future content and systems. (trust me, I've read what Castle and others have said several times, it's very clear.)
  19. I have only one project: Have Fun.
  20. Alt_o_holic, you seem to think it's disrespectful for them to break the prices out the way they did, I happen to think it's disrespectful to ascribe the worst possible motives to them while talking about it. They're not trying to trick people. They're not trying to gouge people. They don't need the money.

However I do feel they deserve to get paid for getting work done early and letting us see and use it.

It was clear in the original announcements that there wasn't even going to be an Issue 17 this far before Going Rogue, much less early access to the 2 new powersets. If by pre-ordering I'm effectively paying for a free issue for the first time in 4 years? Then fine, it's worth it to me, even without counting Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning.

If you don't or can't afford to pay hard working people for doing extra work (and trust me, breaking out part of GR and beta testing it and publishing IS extra work), that's your choice.

But I don't think you need to try to make Paragon feel terrible for the choices they made. Not to mention looking poorly on your fellow players who made the decision to pre-purchase.

I doubt you get by on any less than I do month to month. Disability, Food Stamps, and a sweetheart deal on rent, the whole nine yards. I get my game subscription, and maybe one book/game/movie a month to keep me from going nuts staring at the walls. Yet I was happy to pay for GR early and resent being told I was stupid for giving myself a little treat that will keep me amused for the next 4 months at a minimum.

Reducing prices by increasing supply and pushing players to do more selling to cover the same ground isn't the way to solve the problems.

It will always be easier to re-engineer the system to take advantage of existing behaviors instead of trying to change the behaviors. People are already not very interested in wasting auction slots on items that don't sell well, nor taking the time to sell when their inventory fills up quickly.

Account for that by supporting the people who don't want to take the time to sell at the same time you supply the market for people who need lower value stuff.

If rewards were given progressively during the raid then it wouldn't be such an issue, but the back-loaded nature of Hami raids makes them susceptible to this sort of sniping.
Then the solution would be to re-examine Hami's design, not implement a deliberately designed to be annoying.

Worst part of Day Jobs is that it makes people feel like they shouldn't play certain alts. Not a good idea to add a system that forces people to stand around AFK in hopes of getting in.

Increase the drop-rates on Merits, invention recipes, and Salvage so that more players can have more items to put into the Auction House, and be able to fill the market demand.
This presumes that people want to take the time to put things on the market. The faster my inventory fills up, the more likely I am to simply vendor things or delete them. Anything you do in an attempt to incent more selling needs to have something that makes that selling easier. More stuff isn't the whole of the answer, especially since:

You're trying to create downward price pressure by increasing supply. It's against the seller's interest to sell more for less $

Whatever system you create should be independent of what the players choose to do.

I think maybe a better answer would be to come up with a system that monitors what is vendored/deleted, then link that to a market feeder script such that a % of what is dumped by players is auto-fed back into the AH market at a fluctuating price. Price should be set at a minimum double of the vendor price with a maximum as a certain % of the average AH price based on the number sold.

This kind of background system could go a long way to maintaining an even supply on items most players don't consider worth their time to sell, but are still needed. Also the fact that the system will be feeding items into the market on a consistent basis would let people feel more comfortable in putting in lower than average bids so they don't have to pay inflated prices.

Another potential solution is to put timers on Sales and bids. In WoW's auction, prices are somewhat limited by the fact that if you put up an item, it will come down again within a couple days, and part or all (I forget which) of the posting fee is lost.

I know I wouldn't put something up for a multimillion fee if it was going to come down again in 72 hours.

PS- no solution should force people to join a supergroup or run in sg mode if they don't want to. Groups that prey on people and force them to grind prestige are bad enough as is. You're just incentivizing that bad behavior by rewarding it with better drops.

Why? In WoW (where queued events are common) you set yourself up in the queue and you can do what you like until it pops. I don't think anyone needs to "prove" they really wanna be there by standing around idle until their time comes.

We're playing a game on computers. There's no point not taking advantage of the fact that we're using a device to make things convenient.

Of course the other side of this is that if there's a queue to get in, there should be a /kick function so that people who get in just to idle around and leech can be bumped. Either a Raid Leader interface or a vote kick system.

There was a lot of talk about the set up of zones when Hami was first revamped. I had a detailed PM conversation with BaB on the subject.

What it boils down to is, there's only so much time available, and as long as Hami was the only raid (at the time) filling zones like that, it didn't make much development sense to build a complex raid/zone management system for only one raid.

Now since then, we've had the ship raid, but that was specifically designed to run on smaller numbers.

However with the dev statement that they are looking to create more zone events, here is hoping the revisit the idea when there's 3-4 different raid type events.
