The other day the American Society for Microbiology sent me a free insulated lunchbox thing, y'know, the canvas kind. I think it's a nice one, too. Out of the blue. I didn't renew my subscription. I hadn't submitted an abstract for anything. I just came home and there was a box with a free lunchbox with their logo stenciled on the side.

By the above logic, I wouldn't have appreciated it because it was free. In fact, I appreciated it quite a bit. I thought it was very nice for them to send me this little bonus doohickey for no reason other than I was a member. Not even an expensive member. I pay grad student dues. I'm more disposed to renew my subscription now than I was before because they sent me this little free whatchit.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, but if they sent you one every month, you'd come to not appreciate them as much.
  2. I meant it doesn't have a general no-purge policy, like the player guides forum.
  3. [ QUOTE ]
Its the only reason a thread this old would still be here.

    [/ QUOTE ]

One of the forums has a no-purge policy. Not this one, though.
  4. [ QUOTE ]
Threads with a red name in it aren't supposed to be auto-purged. I'd imagine that's what happened here.

It needs to be locked though.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Ah. I hadn't read all the way through the nearly 40 pages. Didn't know a redname had posted.
  5. Two years minus a month since the last time this thread was posted in. Wow.

Why is it even still here? Why hasn't board maintenance swept it into the rubbish bin long ago?

You have no idea how relieved I am to hear I'm not the only one who made a screensaver (for work, of course) out of their demotivational poster series!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Erm...do your co-workers give you funny looks too?

    [/ QUOTE ]

My despair.com screensaver, desktop, and poster are the LEAST of the things I get funny looks from my coworkers about!

I think you totally fail to get the point. There are other options. You may have to adjust your playstyle to take advantage of them. That includes pulling sometimes to diminish spawns to a more manageable size, carrying break frees, having a pet take an alpha strike, or whatever. As the original poster said, it's the Diablo2 paradigm: mitigate damage in whatever way you can.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Hear, hear!

    Erydanus:

You remind me of a tank I played with recently when I was on my Grav controller. We did the Psychic Clockwork King mission twice and both times he insisted on taking the Alpha and died, despite me saying I could spawn my pet on the king to take it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Tell me he was at LEAST a stone tanker. Please tell me that. Any other tanker trying to tank a psionic damage AV is just... idiotic.

(I tried soloing the PCK actually; I didn't succeed but my pet tanked him for 3 minutes.)

  7. It sounds like you're trying to disagree, then end up agreeing with me by listing two things that work better than healing. I'm letting my statement stand unaltered - healing isn't necessary.
  8. [ QUOTE ]
But there are some case where you can't succeed without them. Honestly do you really think a trick arrow defender is going to be saving more people from the carnies, cot, arachnos, and devouring earth mobs than an empath or thermals will? Empathy/Thermals is the catch all net when it comes to these given situations, nothing short of getting 1 shotted is going to kill you with these powersets if that healer is doing their job.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I have never encountered anything ingame that can't be dealt with without a "healer". Your comment about the TA defender is off the mark, because no one here ever said that ANY defender would do, or that you can handle any situation with any powerset. Some are obviously going to be better for some situations than others. But a "healer" isn't ever necessary.

You know, like tankers (a la your sig).
  9. [ QUOTE ]
Your faq is good but it is lacking something. I know alot of you will not want to hear this but you do need to put in the faq the situations where having a healer is ok. Alot of the Empathy/Thermals hate I have been seeing is that alot of people will not give credit where credit is due when it comes to those powersets. There are just as many situations where those 2 powersets will out do the others. And there are a few situations where based on your team make up those debuffing powersets would actually slow your team down quite a bit.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Scourge never said Empathy/Thermal weren't good or useful sets. The rant was about the attitude that Empathy/Thermal is NECESSARY, or that you CAN'T SUCCEED without them, which is patently ridiculous, and has been proven wrong time and time again by many players' personal experience.

The entire poster series is my screen saver. My desktop? Sometimes the best solution to morale problems is just to fire all of the unhappy people. Those things are great!

They are a conflict of ideas, with intelligent people who know (or think they know) what is going on, and stubborn or stupid people who believe they are right untill you prove them wrong.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I don't mind people who believe they're right until you prove them wrong. The problems are the people who believe they're right even after they've been proven wrong.
  13. [ QUOTE ]
9 out of 10 times in my opinion, someone who says "we need an x" is right that we need something, but wrong about what x is

    [/ QUOTE ]

    That's a very interesting observation.
  14. [ QUOTE ]
My experience says you are incorrect.

DEBUFFS allow teams to take on things that they would never attempt otherwise.

Not Heals, not Buffs, but Debuffs.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Very true. A team can take on a MUCH greater threat if that threat can't even hit them then they could if they have to constantly undo the damage it's doing to them. Ounce of prevention, pound of cure and all that.

Healing is what you do when things have started to go bad. Other kinds of defender powers prevent them from going bad in the first place.
  15. I think I love you. Marry me.

Woo hoo, now I can buy a teleporter AND a toilet!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Just make sure to label them properly.

Pfft. You don't need both. Just get the teleporter. It'll function well enough as a toilet, too.

    I'm not.
  21. [ QUOTE ]
You may also want to make sure that the extension .txt isn't duplicated in the filesystem. Windows has an annoying habit of hiding extensions from people. Try renaming all your files so they don't have .txt on the end. If this is your problem it ought to clear up instantly.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Another possibility is that you didn't go through each bind file and change the pathnames in them to refer to the new directory. It sounds like the game just isn't finding the bind files that other files are referring to, so this is likely the problem. You'll need all the applicable bind files in the same directory, and any reference in one bind file will have to be changed to match where you've actually put them.

    [EDIT]
Reread your post more carefully, and it seems like you've done this and are still having problems. Try removing the file extensions as mentioned above, remembering to change all the file names within the bind files as well.

Remember, everything in this system of files refers to other files, so if you change the locations of them, or the names of the files, you have to change all internal references to files/locations to match.
  22. [ QUOTE ]
I feel stupid; I must be doing something wrong.

I have a MM Robot/Traps, and I'm trying to set up the second version of the keybinds. I've made a folder named "covbinds" with the suggested files made using WordPad. The path to the Robot file is c:\City of Heroes\covbinds\Robot.txt. However, when in-game I type /bindloadfile c:\City of Heroes\covbinds\Robot.txt I get the following error message:

Usage: bindloadfile takes 1 args, you gave 3.
Reads a list of keybinds from a file.
    bindloadfile <string>

I tried making a folder at c:\covbinds\Robot.txt as well, but that didn't work with /bindloadfile either. Here is the text of my last attempt Robot.txt file pasted directly from this forum's initial posts:

    numpad0 bind_load_file c:\covbinds\All.txt
    numpad1 bind_load_file c:\covbinds\Battle.txt
    numpad2 bind_load_file c:\covbinds\Protector.txt
    numpad3 bind_load_file c:\covbinds\Assault.txt

    Any suggestions?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Your problem is here:
    [ QUOTE ]
    c:\City of Heroes\covbinds\Robot.txt

    [/ QUOTE ]

The spaces between "City", "of" and "Heroes" are causing your problem. You can't have any spaces in the path to the bind file.

Don't apologize. I'm just BS'ing, to cover for my own embarassing lack of comprehension!

In the second, you're a government agent using government-sanctioned force. You'll probably get a review and assigned to a desk while under investigation, but if it was a good shoot, you'll be cleared.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Depending on the particulars of the case, you may well be kicked off the force, even if you're not criminally charged. You may also be subject to a civil suit for wrongful death by the victim's family.
