  1. I find it humorous that people are defending them...I understand the EULA says they can't guarantee permanent up time but still this downtime is excessive. For all of you that don't care about the $1.50 or so (or $1) that we lost over the downtime, how about you send it to me then? I don't care if it's $1 I lost in the end, it's still a $1. Sorry if you don't see it this way.

I am perfectly happy with a couple free days. WoW did it, and other MMOs did it (Rift I believe did, or maybe another MMO I'm getting confused for RIft) so there is perfectly no good reason for them not to do so. It's a good PR move. Maybe they should make it optional though so you guys who really like the downtime can opt out and enjoy it more.
  2. Any Kheldian SG's out there?

    Any of them RP?

I really am loving my warshade and would like to join up with like minded individuals

Maybe it's me, but I don't have trouble soloing anything in this game. I don't have any trouble levelling every two or three days on the majority of my characters, in the 20s and 30s. When I get up into the 40s, it's noticable, I can get 1/3 to 1/2 of a bar that represents 1/10 of my way to the next level. It can be kind of jarring to go from filling the bar 3 times in a session to seeing it only barely move.

You've just got to accept it. That's the way RPGs are, as you reach the higher levels you get less progress for more effort. That's how they pull you in, the levels come easily when you are developing your character and concept, and then once your character becomes complete and more balanced in its capabilities you have to work harder and harder to get any stronger. A large part of it is that you are nearing the limits of what the game system can handle, once you hit 95% of the time, and are missed 95% of the time and take only 5% of the damage when you are hit, there is little else the game can do to make you any better.

At least this game isn't like some, that make you gain 10 more levels and do raids for several months, repeatedly, in order to gain about 5% in some stat. And it really is unique that you can just create yet another character, even on a server you have another character on, up to 12 more times, and even more if you pay for some more slots.

I'll also add that maybe you aren't as balanced as you believe yourself to be. You speak about the defensive characteristics of your character being past the ED limits (and you have IOs at this level, which suggests to me that your effort required is more than just levelling) yet you don't seem to mention your offensive capability. At 32 you should have a very balanced Brute built more for damage, the levels at which you were concentrating on defense in order to survive building Fury should have passed in the 20s.

Maybe you should switch out some of those IOs for more damage and recharge, instead of trying to cap defense so early. Especially with the changes to Fury, you can't leverage defense for that max Fury any more.

'Nuther quick point, another advantage of altitis is that Patrol XP really smooths over the levelling curve and lessens the frustration of dying. It's still frustrating, of course, but at least as long as you have Patrol XP left you know your progress won't be slowed any. It's simple enough to just play a character until you have no more Patrol XP, and then switch to another that is still full up.
Yeah, i think I have put too much effort on my secondary powers. I'll have to fool around with respecing, I do believe I have a free respec from something.

As for the poster above me who mentioned toughness, I'm embarrassed to say I didn't take it. I think I will use my next two powers for that lol (I take it boxing is better then kick btw?). I really could use an extra 14/15% (when slotted) damage resistance. I think if that were the case, my damage resistance (around 40 something %) would be around 53 - 55% o.O. I like taking half damage!

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it

I was so frustrated earlier today as I was pumped after getting to 32 last night. All of a sudden I seemed to hit a miserable wall. With your tips, I'm immediately on a better road to success!!

One of the ones that helped me immediately was dropping my level to -1, but simultaneously bumping my villain equivalent from x3 to x4. All of a sudden I'm doing well again! It's challenging (I have to pop inspirations sometimes, but not like 8 of them for one fight), but my solo character is not doing so badly any longer.

Sorry for sounding so upset earlier but I was, for me it (CoH) was something I was having a blast playing for the past month and half now (the grouping characters I made have never had a dull or boring moment). All of a sudden it went from challenging to impossible and I was angry...a game I had loved to play suddenly became frustrating and unfun near instantly, I didn't know what to do.

I've edited my post title to reflect your advice, thanks again guys for not berating me even though my initial post had some nerd rage in it. If I have any other questions, I'll be a bit more calm when I ask next time

I do team, probably about 50% of the time I play, but this char is almost strictly for solo play.

I solo nicely at 1x player and +3 level and enjoy the challenge. Very few of my characters can solo anything more than that and only 1 (Thugs/TA) can solo x8 mobs at +0 level.

Besides, in a game like CoX, levelling is not all you aim for, do the arcs, read the stories, have some fun.
I definitely do that (reading arcs, having fun, etc.) but leveling is fun! Maybe I've taken the wrong approach, maybe I need higher level mobs but less of them?

    Solo stinks

Before I whine too much, I only have about 1 year played between my two accounts. One of my accounts was lost in a sense (I couldn't recover the PW) so I started a new one...my new one has 7 months played and my old one has 6 months (I think). The characters on my old one were around issue one so I never really wanted them back

    Anyways,

Soloing stinks in this game. I teamed a lot this time back, but I just want to play my solo brute (Dark / Fire) sometimes. I have IO's equivalent to SO's in everything, but can't afford the 15-25million each set IO's. In order to have decent exp (which USED to make leveling take 2 - 2 1/2 hrs which I could live with) I had to set myself to equivalent to 3 villains, and fight bosses. As I approached 32, it became more and more difficult to solo, as I died more and more, especially versus carnival of shadows, CoT, and now Longbow...even PPD Swat are getting near impossible w/o eating inspirations like candy before a fight.

My resistance granting powers grant the maximum amount of resistance before diminishing returns sets in as well...it just seems like I charge a spawn now and BAM, I die before I can really kill 1/2 the guys with my AoEs. It's just plain not fun, and even IF I can finish a mission, my exp rate is slow enough so that it will take me 4 1/2 - 5 hours a level now all of a sudden...wtf?! (I'm not talking about moving at a Granny pace either, when I can kill rapidly through eating insp like candy it will take me this long to level).

This is not fun at all, in fact I had to unsub...I really wanted to stay (and actually perhaps you guys can convince me, maybe I'm doing something wrong that I don't see, I would love that!).

    I can't live with:

    (a) Having to set my #of villains equivalent up to 3 and dying constantly now.
    (b) Taking 4+ hrs to level solo all of a sudden

Now if this is the type of game it's supposed to be fine, I unsubbed, I'll leave you guys alone for a year until I come back for a month or two to see if anythings change...but really this stinks for the type of gamer I am.

I am casual, and I LOVE the game...but it's just impossible to have fun as a soloist from my perspective. Now again, I DO team, in fact I have a Plant / Emp controller, a warshade, and a DP / Sonic Corruptor that I absolutely love to team with, but half my time is spent teaming the other soloing. I just need to solo sometimes, and right now it's not possible to have fun doing so.

I personally feel that is what is wrong with this game, if it was possible to solo meaningfully I would likely stick around but I just can't sub to the game if 1/2 the time I play it's just dying all the time, and when I don't die the exp is slower then molasses.

It makes me feel crappy for quitting, because you all in the community (well almost everyone) are really awesome people. I have fun RPing with fellow players, teaming with fellow players, and while soloing chatting w/ my friends and in broadcast for fun. You all are extremely helpful and knowledgeable...but it pains me to have to leave this MMO for another that I can solo in.

TLDR: If my brute is doing something wrong, what is it? I want to sub and keep playing but solo is impossible for me at a meaninful rate. If it isn't possible, I guess thanks for answering and sorry I won't be playing for awhile.

PS: No one can have my stuff because I will resub to try again about a year from now, I'll need it.
  9. Personally, I think healing flames makes sense if you have fire aura simply because I assume you are constantly engulfed in flames (protecting you because people have a tough time hitting something that's on fire w/o wounding themselves). Since you are constantly on fire and/or a being surrounded by fire, adding even more fire to your being could in a sense prevent you from being extinguished or make you harder to take down because you went from a mobile campfire to a mobile bonfire.
  10. I mainly solo for some reason.

I dunno, I guess I really just like the way CoH's character progression works. It is insanely easy to make money at the market, I usually will mail an alt 1 mil at the start.

At 12 and each level I get enhancements afterward I'll make IO's (level 15 one's) simply becauase I'm crazy and don't like that my DO's get less effective then 19.2% when I level (I know I could buy more, but I'm to whiny to do so).

At 22 I'll make the level 25 versions of IO's.

On average, I'll lose around 220k - 250k making IO's at 12, but by selling salvage I don't need and other stuff on the market place, my money actually gradually increases back to or beyond the original 1mil by 22 (usually way beyond). I guess the trick is learning how the market works, it's not easy (at first) but once you get the hang of it money flows like water as far as making IO's and stuff is concerned.

If I made a mostly group char though, I would probably do something different because the levels are quicker (maybe I just suck lol)

*In case you were wondering, yes calling you all idiots is appropriate in this instance, because well, that is what you all are in this thread.
No offense (and sorry if this turns into two posts in a row) but the OP is complaining ultimately about getting something like +5mph worth of running speed. I guess if there really is a huge outcry about this, make it optional for people like yourself and the OP. I understand what you're trying to say, but I think anyone is an idiot for opposing such a change (since you started the name calling, I figured I'd point the finger right back at you).

Other posters have suggested things like: Using the walk power for realistic travel. If your character truly is of the natural origin and you don't want to use any power that negates realism using sprint by it's very nature defies logic, no human can run 10+mph for hours on end and actually have the endurance to fight near endlessly, for people who want realistic travel options even using sprint is too fast. It's called "sprint" and unless you use it for only 10 - 15 seconds at a time (arguably less then that since game time is much faster then real life time) you are already traveling too fast. Therefore walk is really the only option for these types of characters .

Pardon my French but...ARE YOU F'ING SERIOUS?! This is likely to change my outlook on the game from something I sub to every few months to a game I'm always subbed too...I'm very happy if this is true!!!
  14. For me, it's a huge quality of life power that I was more then happy to snag. I'm one of those wackos who CAN'T play without a travel power. I had to get to level 14 to even start enjoying the game previously...sure I can get jet packs or those weird jumping packs but for some illogical reason based somewhere within the depths of my insane brain the 2:00:00 timer coupled w/ the fact that it's not something inherent to my character makes those a non-worthy substitute (I know that makes no sense).

With ninja run + swift, I can ignore a travel power at 14 and either skip it all together or get it much later.

I really wish though they would take out health and stamina and just make them autopowers already...I can't play w/o stamina at least...or heck even if they just got rid of the cooldown on rest I'd be happy...Heck, if they did any of the aforementioned I'd doubt I'd ever unsub lol. I know I'm nuts, but a travel power + stam (or near unlimited rest) are two mandatory requirements for my enjoyment of CoH.
  15. Thanks again for the advice, I'm looking forward to making this character . Sadly I only have 6 - 7 mos. of play time so I don't have the cool sands of mu power lamely, I can make do with the power pool powers though
  16. Thanks for the tip, and I'm glad it's possible to do this
  17. I'm crazy and for some reason am thinking of making a solo controller. The solo controller guide is sadly listed as either issue 2 or 4, I forget, but it's waaaay behind. I guess my main question is this:

Are there any good power pool combat powers, or if there aren't any good ones are there any "ok" ones? Finally, which ones should I avoid when making my character and why?. Thanks.

I leave backstory for people who can RP with me, and who my character trusts enough to share that information. And it frustrates the god-moders to no end.
I agree with you on this. If that player did have some sort of ability to see my past and they RPed it well with me I'd probably give them some info as long as it's cool, if they are clearly metagaming I won't which will make for some fun RPing perhaps.

"I can read your mind! I can tell these things due to my immense powers to see everything about you."

"Hmmm, well you're still wrong. I don't have any of those powers" (obviously my character is lying, but even if someone COULD see right through me like this hypothetical person can, I wouldn't just concede everything).

At this point my character would probably slink into the shadows at the first opportunity and escape, and personally I'd try to avoid RPing with someone of that nature, but I still stand by my point that I NEVER would tell anyone how to RP their character or what they can or can't do, I'd try RPing with them and if I didn't like it I'd RP my exit

Oh definitely, but that can be part of the fun of playing an idiot . Also, to address your point about that being directed at both of us, you are right...I did take it a bit too personally. I guess I remembered my first time trying to RP in CoX and got a bit angry...sorry for losing my cool.

First time I tried to RP here I was insulted and laughed at because my concept was something that many RPers found to be overused or boring. I thankfully encountered a very kind player who explained to me the general atmosphere of RPers here in CoX, what many of them thought about certain concepts, and he gave me several suggestions to create interesting character concepts in this environment. If it wasn't for this player I likely would have given up there...sometimes when I see arguments like the one I definitely overacted upon, that type of logic can get my blood boiling....though I do understand and accept that he has every right to disagree with my opinion.

You are the one who is god-moding and claiming access to information your character doesn't have. If anyone should be ashamed it is you. And it doesn't matter what little BS bio you come up with to justify your god-moding, you are just making excuses.
Hah, I expected this response. Did you read mine? I guess not...As I stated, my hypothetical character stereotypes a character based on how they fight. He may personally classify a stalker as anyone who hides in the shadows and attacks from the shadows (theoretically, anyone who took the stealth pool may fall into his definition). He personally calls them stalkers , maybe your character does not but how dare you try to tell my character or me that his thoughts aren't valid. I'm fine with your character in game telling me that, but out of game it's annoying. I do understand what you are saying OOC, about him being from Preatoria. My characters do not have the ability to determine your archetype nor do I ever RP as such, but what if I did make a character that classified people as archetypes that the game has provided just based on their personal observations, he may even (ooc: erroneously) define them as villains soley based on their observed powers. Is he wrong about the OP's character (in game)? You bet he is, but again, how dare you try and tell me there is no way he can classify the character as a villain and/or stalker.

That's for MY CHARACTER to decide, not you. The OP said they were in a team, this means he got to observe his powers and could come to this conclusion logically. It's not like he ran up to the OP and said, "YOU ARE A VILLAIN STALKER." If that was the issue, then we may actually agree. You seem to want to force your rules on others. The City of X game(s) clearly define archetypes throughout the game, it's not out of the realm of possibility for a character to be able to guess, randomly apply, or otherwise know a character's archetype. I just don't understand what makes it ok for you to dictate the universe in a particular way that you only see fit.

Why is it that you can define any parameter about your character (even stuff that I may personally dislike but do accept because I find myself fair and understanding, such as being the child of two gods) but because my character may assign yours or others to "archetypes" it's bad RPing? For all you know, I could be RPing an insane character who thinks everyone is a villain stalker (another concept I would personally find stupid, but I would still accept the RPing). I mean there are plenty of examples of TV shows, Manga, Comics, etc. where characters have the ability to sense what other people are either through study, powers, or devices. You just don't seem to want to accept that someone could do this. I don't mean to sound rude to you, but you are one of those RPers I would probably dislike. One of those who tell me a character concept of mine is stupid or a bad RP idea because you've heard it before or dislike it. Try to be more open minded, I have no problem accepting any concept of yours (even if I dislike it) but you clearly can't accept mine.

Archetypes are something in the game, as are "security levels". It's possible for someone to RP that knowledge somehow because the game uses these concepts all the time.. You can't dictate when they are applicable and when they are not, unless you personally are a god...or god-moding it like you are. Sorry, but it's true.

Notice the difference between our two arguments: I'm not trying to dictate what your character can think, but you are trying to dictate what mine can think. If your character wants to argue that I can't "sense" his archetype, it may be an interesting and heated debate that makes the two of them enemies (as they can never solve their differences and are both bigots) but it would be fun to role-play. You can't dictate something is "ooc" again, when it's used constantly in the game. If they didn't intend for archetypes to exist, they wouldn't have them.

EDIT: I've said my thoughts. If you want to ask me questions about what I've said or clarifications I will do so, but I don't want to go back and forth saying the exact same thing to you. If you don't agree with me that's fine, I respectfully disagree with your opinion and it would be nice for you to do the same. I have nothing against you but I don't want to turn this into an endless forum argument. If you live near CT though, maybe we can meet IRL, drink some beers, argue loudly, perhaps fist fight, and become good friends.

You actually perfectly demonstrated my point, in your character's mind perhaps stalkers are no more evil then defenders. How do you know in my character's mind that he doesn't think stalkers are villains? Perhaps again, as I stated earlier, my character studied criminal behaviors and found that those who frequently hide in the shadows and assassinate foes from the shadows are almost always villains from RI. Perhaps he's a bit of a bigot who refuses to disbelieve that stereotype no matter how many times your character tells him he donates all his money to orphanages and only takes missions to save the elderly. It's all about a character's perspectives, and you really ARE god mode-ing it by daring to dictate how my character thinks. Shame on you.
  24. This thread reminds me of perhaps the only thing I hate in the CoX community...some of the RPers! While most of the community is nice, I find that [some] RPer's are the most strict, rude, and just downright mean people.

This whole debate about not knowing one's archetype or security level for example, demonstrates my feelings on this.

It seems like it's ok for your character to have some crazy background story with gods and angels, time traveling, etc. etc., but because a character has the ability to perhaps classify you as an archetype or security level they are bad RPers. How dare you try to tell them that they can't do that. Perhaps their character CAN quantify you as being a specific archtype or level just by appearance, maybe that's THEIR character's abilities. Of course this argument does not fly with these (again SOME) RPers who can define the universe by their own personal set of rules, should it clash with them they simply refuse to accept it and only allow you to RP with them based on their own personal standards. Examples are things like, "THAT EMOTE CANNOT EXIST ON PREATORIA SIMPLY BECAUSE I HAVE MADE UP SOME LOGICAL REASON THAT WORKS FOR ME, WHO CARES IF THERE MAY BE ANOTHER REASON"

(although I used quotes, no one actually said that, was just demonstrating the idea I was getting from some people here and paraphrased it)

The original poster gives me the impression that he is this type of person. I've seen him post here, and he's a helpful guy and very kind...but his post rubbed me the wrong way. It's ok for you to have some cool background that I think is a bit out there, but I respect it and think it's awesome that you've created a concept you enjoy. How dare you try to force your own standards on another RPer however. You seemingly didn't take the time to understand his character, or you didn't want to accept that he classified you as a "stalker". Perhaps his character studied at some criminology school where they defined people as "stalkers" because they frequently hide in the shadows and try to assassinate people with their dark powers. Perhaps this same school stated they are villains from the Rogue Isles. Perhaps he was just roleplaying this knowledge that his character may have conceivably had, but you simply didn't want to accept that he thought you were a villain. In real life their are people who simply cannot accept someone because of stereotypes, perhaps his character was one of them. It seems like you just didn't want to accept his character's views.

The fact that his character says you are a villainous stalker from rogue islands does not make it true, just as you claiming that he can't qualify you as a villain based on his character's observations is not true either.
  25. If I had to wager...I'd bet on he's joking about his account being XXXXX, it's kinda generic censored name :P. Now if you were joking in the sense that you were being sarcastic, it went way over my head.
