Quote:Well, that is unfortunate...I might have to look into ninja blade and see if it's anywhere close to my concept, but thank you for the well thought out write up!I hate to say it, but no BS is simply an underperforming set out of PvP. My main is a Bs/Regen scrapper I've been playing for 3 years and it never gets better.
BS is not worthless, but it is inferior to ninjablade in literally every metric except if you measure one single blow. The attacks are slow enough that you do need to pick your targets in teams or you really will end up whiffing on already dead enemies.
Try re-rolling with ninjablade if you want a sword, or kinetic melee if you just want a hard hitting primary.
/Dark is great especially if you layer on some defense. It combines well with both BS and regen thanks to parry/divine avalanche.
If you are going to stick it out, go in first, and focus on lieuts and bosses, don't bother with the minions on teams. The one saving grace of BS is that your good hits don't kill the enemy, but often get them low enough that someone's AoE will do it fast enough. So I just hit people once and then tab to the next one. -
...and frankly I feel pretty useless, at least during the sewer trial where it seems there is a plant/ dom that just annihilates everything before I can even get a few swings off.
I really like the concept, but just coming off my AR/NRG blaster it feels soooo ridiculously slow with very little payoff per strike.
I'm not quite sure what I'm expecting, but it wasn't this. Perhaps I have gotten a little spoiled by my blaster? -

As you might imagine, I've been out of the game for some time, and it seems I am likewise not the only person to return due to the new business model and the host of additions returning and new players seem to have financed the development of.
Last time I checked in was before going rogue, with the addition of demon summoning and dual pistols.
Some time relatively recently, we got beam rifle, and very recently street justice.
Now we have a quickly approaching Titan weapons.
So can anyone clue me in as to any more upcoming power sets or zones/mechanics that are being worked on? I've checked the developers corner, and wasn't able to find subjects relevant to my interest from a glance. I've seen talk of staffs, but I'm not sure if this is a form of sarcasm or something that is actually in the works.
Thanks in advance! -
-
These need to be a weapon for some class. Probably claws.
-
I've only just glanced a bit at beam rifle, and I'm not too incredibly impressed with it at the moment. But maybe I'll look into it more, it might fit the concept of "Big, hard hitting impressive tech power".
That aside, I would think a re-design for the franken-gun would be awesome, along with customizable options of some of the existing options we have, and more options in general. -
I wouldn't be adverse to some new skins for AR, heck throw in a new thematic type for all the power sets with custom options, but I have to say that AR is fairly lackluster in comparison to most of the other sets in regards to the "Style" and "Feel".
It's like the difference between dual pistols, and the mastermind thug pistols. One is a very jon-woo-doves-flyin-and-widows-cryin sort of fighting style which is visually impressive in its animations, while the set itself has some interesting mechanics. The other is "generic person B shooting a gun".
Beam rifle is sort of the other end of the spectrum, where it's not about the animations, but the "effects" the weapon has. Massive, loud beams of energy with explosive force and tearing, violent energies. It's not the actions of the character, but the weapon itself that is impressive.
The AR lacks both of these elements. Its animations are mundane and the effects are likewise pedestrian. While this may be good for those looking to have someone a little low key, I imagine there is still a niche for a set comparable to titan weapons, based on projectiles.
And that's a good point about magic. Frankly I see little to no representation of purely magical powers. Mostly conjuration of elements or netherworld energies (Dark _____) -
....."Titanic Gun" is to AR, Bow, Pistols ETC?
I imagine the concept of adding a power set for "Big gun/s" (Resistance cannon, Various enemy type minigun, Rocket launcher, grenade launcher, etc) has been tossed around quite a bit and for quite some time, though ultimately was somewhat pointless due to the fact that we already have AR and Archery (And relatively recently, DP).
But now that we have Titan weapons making their debut soon, which appears to be more or less yet another lovely set (albeit not necessarily revolutionary in "role" and gameplay) why not massive gun/s?
I know I've been hankering for that minigun ever since I was getting mowed down by 5th column some years ago (Before the council overthrow nonsense) and I feel a direction could be taken that is not too dissimilaur than the one being used by TW, though with it's own unique style.
I would imagine passive chance for knockback and accuracy for general bonus. Lots of slow, powerful attacks, probably AoE oriented for the most part.
Thoughts? Do want? Do not want?
P.S.
Just a thought. For a weapon "costume part" regarding this, weapons integrated into the arm, or under slung would be fantastic. -
More to fit a concept and have fun with apparently one of the most exclusive power sets, I decided to make a BS/Wp stalker. Looking on down the line however, it seems like it might be pretty powerful in the later levels. An superior damage knock up, and extreme Cone (with higher chance to crit) sounds pretty good.
That being said though, I've only gone a few levels in. Does anyone have experience with BS stalkers and know how it pans out? -

the comments on the various blog and news stories about his exploits were far more entertaining than anything he wrote on the topic.

Undoubtedly. Considering if he didn't have a hand in creating it, it might actually hold an ounce of truth. -
Amazing! Not simply stopping at spending hours greifing people and being amazed by their hostility, he has decided to conduct a second experiment.
By publishing the results of the first experiment, he intends to study the behavior of those reading about his time and money wasted annoying people. The results so far are:
Incredulity
Hostility
Sarcasm
Plea's to revoke his PHD status
Absolutely fascinating results! -

and interrupting duels
[/ QUOTE ]
duels can't be interrupted, thats why there's the arena, ppl pretending to duel in a pvp zone are merely 2 kills for me or any pvper if we see them.
[/ QUOTE ]
If a duel consists of villian vs hero, how would you get two kills from that? Just curious ;3
If a pair of people wanna duke it out without distractions to see who really is better without the NPCs or other players barging in, I say have at it. But find a secluded area, or you're asking to get greifed. -
If you read the full story, it's something akin to him trying to figure out why it's rude to [censored] in someone's living room, even though it is not a punishable offense by US law.
Basically, he acts like a general [censored] bag (droning, TPing into NPC's, and interrupting duels) and seems to be amazed that people get upset by it, considering that these are things the game allows.
Reason being, it's a different sub-culture within the game. There are rights and wrongs, do's and dont's. For instance, in America, crossing your leg over another while sitting down is often a comfortable position.
In the middle east, exposing the sole of your foot to someone in such a manner is deeply offending as it implies you are beneath them.
Basically, this guy is running around, shoving his foot in people's faces and being amazed by their negative response, considering it's so different than his own culture. But of course, considering he's a professor, it's simply scientific. Not a breach of social protocol.
I think it would be interesting to shave his rapidly balding scalp and fill his bed with scorpions to examine his reaction when he wakes up.
Hell, I could even write a book about it too! -

Also - color changing is coming *before* Going Rogue, as in the next issue (Issue 16).
Going Rogue is *not* Issue 16, per Positron. (Linky).
[/ QUOTE ]
It seems as though most people passed right over this post, or it's implications .-.
If color customization comes before going rogue, then that means the options are going to be something other than color for the expansion. Can't fathom what that would be aside from animations though =/ -

I'm not sure I'd take a /shield in PvP. The defense is pitiful compared to the to-hit buffs you'll be facing.
With that said, dark would be the more viable option to round out the lack of a heal in /shield, although if you're looking for insane damage, a saturated SS/Shield is looking at around +500% damage.
[/ QUOTE ]
The problem is....you'll never have THAT many Heroes around you and be alive long enough to use it heh
[/ QUOTE ]
Ohh..I don't know about that. Imagine a sg vs sg match with a saturated Sd leading the spear tip. Scary. -
So, while Dm has an amazingly quick attack speed and is a buzzsaw for fury, along with it's amazing utility (self heal, end restore, immob+superior dmg tier9) and -acc, this is a pretty good complement for any brute looking to get some survivability, and it's damage type is, while not as rarely negated as it's normal counterpart (energy) still fairly rarely resisted (save undead and demons).
The -acc does wonders for the early levels as well, where shield very much blows.
SS on the other hand has it's purely insane damage output with perma-rage (assuming it hasn't been nerfed) and fury is always easy to build with brawl anyway. -Acc? Who needs it when your enemy can't stand on their feet for more than three seconds. Though knockdown/back is unreliable at best for a defense mechanism.
Still, having a powerful ranged attack, along with one of the best attacks in the game, imo (knock out blow) and the ever omnipotent perma rage blows DM's buff out of the water. But of course, no heals, no end.
Which sounds more solid for using with a shield? Consider too, that the shield has shield charge, a teleportaoe with superior damage. Combine that with foot stomp, and you have some good times. Or fill the loss of foot stomp with the charge and have your -acc and end sucking goodness.
Opinions? Which do you think would be better for the combo? -
Dark melee has all the utilitarian goodness, and the -acc greatly adds to survivability, though SS with perma rage is pretty freaking powerful and it's knockdown can do even more for survivability, though it's obviously less frequent and dependable.
Discuss. -

Personally I still think it's a business decision. AE spawned a lot of 50s in a short time and now people are trying other ATs faster since there isn't that chore of grinding/leveling.
[/ QUOTE ]
From what I understand, this thing most people refer to as "grinding/leveing" is also known as "playing the game the way it was meant to be played".
They didn't sit down and spend the hours, days and weeks creating and writing out back stories, intricate plots, organizations and their connections, in game history, and giving each a unique look and personality that fit said story, so people could spend the entire game moving from one door to the next getting power leveled, or worse yet, not even leaving the starting zone.
One of the great things in this game, imo, is that it is not top heavy. Sure, there is loads of content in the endgame, but the vast majority of the content they have added spans more than ten levels per. Which is more than most MMO's put out. That being said, the game is not made to be "completed", it is made to be "experienced".
Imho, anything that aids PLing should be reviewed and toned down or modified if not outright eliminated or avoided.
P.S. I think the Architect falls under the former category. -
@ KitsuneKnight
Not necessarily. AR is more AoE and has a more highly resisted damage type, but it's fairly quick in animations (post-buff) accurate and lower in end cost, if memory serves.
Energy is a rarely resisted damage type, has knockback, and a very prolific nuke.
Each has it's pros and cons.
Though I certainly agree that min/maxing and playing for fun and concept aught to be as close as possible and with as little advantage as possible to min maxers. People should be able to play what they want (within reason) and not be penalized for it.
@Lothic
I've pointed out that problem with classless "Classes" in a classified game a few times too...it's the obvious dilemma, and there's really no getting around it without a lot of work.
But I certainly agree that giving people such power [as free selection provides] will cause many to exploit it to it's fullest as opposed to creating their concept. Both are simply different styles of play, and neither is really wrong per-say...but min/maxing can ruin the game for those looking to simply play a concept (as they fall behind), not the other way around.
Regardless, who knows. Maybe they will start to make more multi-teir classes such as our two epic AT's? -
So the Dk is obviously a bad example (as is WoW for balance. But find me a balanced MMO and I'll find you a liar] , but I'm pretty hard pressed to find an MMO most can relate to, with an obviously over powered class playing with normal classes. I was not aware that CoH was originally free form..that's an interesting tiddbit...
But as I've said before...depending on how champions does things, its quite apparent wither the idea would be possible to implement or not. If I'm not mistaken, DCUO is following the same suit in terms of freeform power selection. It seems everyone is thinking I'm talking about freeform as in completely and absolutely free form. Of course, I've never said anything to the contrary ,so that's my mistake...but the selection process of powers is still something that can be freeform, and regulated at the same time.
For instance, No, you can't have full auto, nova, emp missile, summon oni, and rise from the ashes as your powerset. However, you would be able to select from all sets in the same sort of scaling the game currently uses. Start with burst from AR, or smite from DM, or whatever what have you, and build up from there.
Of course, it would be susceptible to min maxing...but let's face it. The game clearly already has plenty of min/maxing about with particular power sets. How many SS brutes do you see in comparison to stone or war mace? In my personal experience, the former far outnumbers the latter.
Regardless of what you put in the game, some will play for concept or for fun, and some will play for min/maxing. Just because a blaster chooses to use AR as opposed to Energy, and his effectiveness in pvp is considered to be less, does that mean that Energy should not exist because it's too overpowered in such a state?
The class could have specific values for it's abilities (Much as the modifiers between corrs and defenders/blasters) or even specifically tailored versions of powers for it's choosing, and would have limitations on certain effects (Only two superior dmg attacks, one extreme, one heal...) but regardless, considering there are two games coming out based on the principal of freeform power selection, I would imagine it is feasible.
Though once again, feasible in a game with normal classes is another question entirely. -
Well, despite the death knight being completely, irredeemably OP, people still play the game, and seem to get along [ to continue playing it] fine, do they not? That's why I bring up the point. It wasn't as though adding the DK caused some sort of player fallout of an apocalyptic scale to the game, so much as some complaining and nerf bat swinging.
And yes, the idea comes from champs online...a little bird [chirp chirp twitter twitter] told me a bit about it who happens to be in beta and while the system is currently unbalanced in terms of power damage and usefulness in beta, there is no problem with the selection system.
In fact, it was even mentioned that the players wanted even less control than what was being put on them, as they are forced to choose powers at certain levels that might not be the particular ones of a set they want.
For instance, a player wants to use her eye beams and assault rifle, but the next level all of the abilities she has to choose from are ones he doesn't particularly want, though she has no other option /but/ to choose a power. Hence, the whole kind of "choose any power you want" is somewhat sullied by the fact you are still forced at times to take those you don't want.
If that makes any sense =/
Though obviously, champs has yet to release, when it does, we'll see how well their system works. Though it's obvious someone thinks the topic of this thread is pretty viable, and is willing to put a lot of cash into the idea. (Though instead of adding an AT, which has consequences for the rest, and is infinitely more difficult, everone making everyone their favorite "tankmage") -
Does anyone have the technical savvy or has heard a definitive answer, as to whither or not it is possibly (technically) or in the works to give players an archetype that allows them access to all existing powers?
Obviously, such a thing has it's own problems, especially when it comes to balance. Though frankly, blizzard seems to have suffered little with releasing their over-powered-jack-of-all trades-and-master-as-well, so it can be done.
If such a thing were possible, it would be well worth its own issue or even expansion.
Mind you, the concept here is that a player would be allowed to create an avatar, of which, would be able to choose from all existing power sets. Though they would only be able to add powers and enhancement slots as per the norm, their powers could be taken from any pool existing in the game (Within reason. No hamidon replication or vahizhilok arm guns).
For instance, a person could take a kick from the martial arts set, then a pistol attack, then a heal from medicine, and the LRM that NPC's (used to?) use.
This would allow a level of customization that would undoubtedly raise the bar...but the original archetypes would suffer. The method of making such a character, or obtaining the ability to do so, would have to be difficult, vigorous, rare, or highly moderated. -
Hrm..Well I suppose having two choices for power sets is going to be pretty damn helpful in this regard. I can have my travel power-less build for pve, and get Sj at the very least for pvp.
