  1. The point of my hypothetical situation being:

In the absence of a blanket definition of good or evil, attacking the problems of sociopathy and psychopathy (as herein defined) as if they were medical issues. Which I suppose they are, whether or not good or evil exists in an objectively definable form.

The retrovirus removes any medically derived antisocial tendencies. As a result, your moral compass becomes your logic, modified by your society. If your society beleives that gingers are evil, you probably start off thinking that also; it would be up to your logic and will to act counter to that, should you so desire.

Understood; I think we should toss it a Ressurect, or perhaps a Mutation.

IIRC, very few arcs proportionally in this game are connected to a specific date and can be left alone. The rest can probably be mostly fixed with text changes ('Malta' becoming 'some mysterious organization'). So the new timeline becomes:

    2002 First Rikti Invasion
2004 Statesman calls for heroes to migrate to Paragon
2005-2010 Stuff happens that is accessible only in Ouroboros (if that)
2011 Fall of Galaxy City; Freedom generation heroes arrive
    2011+ Your current career
  3. Nice!

Also looks like there are powers that both benefit and penalize the player: interesting.

  7. I'll cast a vote in favor of internal consistency and continuity.

It should absolutely be possible to draw a clean line through the game at any level (or at least any cluster of 5 levels) and say, "below this line, x is a mystery and y is revealed" as if the game were a single player game.

All it would take is an editor, and I and many others would be totally willing to do it gratis.

This game has a rich, deep back story and that is important to my enjoyment.

Sure, there are a lot of people who are in favor of rush and kill, but that doesn't mean that there should not be content produced for those who want to read and alter the course of a good story.

For all of the issues with talk-heavy arcs like parts of First Ward, Dr. Graves and more, no one has to do them. They are an alternative to more action-packed arcs, and they absolutely should exist for those who like them.

The game has a strong core of face smashing goodness; it can also support paths to 50 for those who like relationship stories, mysteries, and puzzles.
  8. Or add a penalty while it is running; "Berserk" type abilities in many games penalize Defense or the equivalent. Then you make it perma at your own peril.

A penalty to Recovery while it is running would also be appropriate.

I'd also like to see a bonus to Recharge and possibly movespeed while the power is running; that would also be thematic.

Jessica as Sue was ...passable (sad because she can act when she wants to), but Johnny, Reed and Ben were spot on.

Which makes the whole Doom thing even more sad.

Out of curosity, where exactly does your math diverge from his? Does it diverge prior to the beginning of this month?
  12. Now that I think about it, with the Holidays on the horizon, I'm thinking February before this system starts behaving 'normally'.
  13. Every month from now until the end of time? No.

Every month for the first 3 months? About what I expect from a change of this magnitude.
  14. My issue with Movie!Doom in the first one was primarily the voice. This is the template for Darth Vader, people <citation needed> and should have sounded grand and impressive with a hint of Romanian accent, and probably some electronic distortion. Not 'boring standard movie villain'. That was actually the one and only aspect of that movie I found 'unforgivable'.
  15. The first rule of making a good comic book movie is: make a good movie.

The second rule is: read the comic, feel the cool, translate that.

Adapt. Do not reimagine. Do not make it something else. Do not dumb it down. Do not parody. Do not deconstruct.

    Third: be epic.

The first X-Men movie? Do that. It was not enslaved to canon, and it utilized the themes of the X-Men and the cool characters and powers to tell a story about alienation and temptation that still would have been good without fight scenes and black jumpsuits.

Movie continuity is movie continuity. I can forgive that.
But do not ignore the cool parts of the character in the original source in order to tell the story; then it becomes a story about someone else who just happens to be wearing the suit. That cannot be forgiven.

Superman Returns: I have many issues with this story, but even if I forgive Super Stalker and Super Deadbeat Dad and Super Can't tell I'm standing on a Kryptonite Continent and Lex recycled plot Luthor...I am still left with the fact that the movie builds up and then ignores Superman's one weakness. Superman is a powerful guy. However, the one thing he should never be able to do in any continuity is simply pick up a Kryptonite continent and toss it into deep space. One of the main things about him is that he has to get help or think his way around Kryptonite.

I can't even give a metaphorical example to compare this to because this should BE the metaphorical example that continuity faux pas are compated to. Aargh.
  16. Another way of putting it might be:

Would it be correct to introduce a medical procedure that prevents people that would vary too much from a "normal" genetic standard from ever being born, in the hope of abolishing certain birth defects.

Its "unique purpose" would still have to come from something it could do better than katana (and presumably most other sets).
I am fully in favor of a 'berserker mode' power for Broadsword.

As far as a unique purpose, how about expanding on the -def mechanic already in place?

In many movies and stories, a powerful strike from a broadsword leaves the opponent unable to defend themselves: they have been disarmed, their shield is broken, their armor is cloven open, etc.

What if there were a chance for a 'critical' -Def effect, that drastically reduced Defense for a very short time? The niche here is that Broadsword could be a 'go to' for foes that have high Defense (sort of 'compressing' the steady drain on defense that other sets like Katana manifest). Burst Damage by way of (team) Burst Accuracy, as it were?
  18. In terms of how Broadsword differs from Katana in cinema and comics, Broadsword is a punishing, bone-crunching weapon that leaves grevious wounds, as opposed to Katana (whose victims tend not to realize they have been cleanly bifurcated until right before they fall over).

Hence; a "bleeding" DoT of lethal damage, and a small Chance to Knockdown on most powers.

If I could get away with it, I'd add a small Chance to +Recharge into their Build Up, although I'd really rather swap it out for a 'Berserker' style power that buffs Recharge and Damage and debuffs your own Defense...but that would probably break the Cottage Rule.

With the exception of Incarnate content, the entire game is doable with SOs.

If you want to hold yourself or your teammates to a higher standard, that's on you.
  20. Essentially, IMHO, the line that must not be crossed is for it to be possible to purchase anything with Real Money that can then be traded.

This must never happen, and if it has happened, it must un-happen.

I have been politely informed that we are dancing on the edge of modification, so I will phrase my comments carefully.

    Heads up.

However, I see nothing wrong with clarifying my premise:

When a murder (for instance) is committed, it is my completely made up for this discussion idea that it is done in one of a few states:

1: The attacker is psychopathic (medically incapable of realizing that the attack is not appropriate or justified): the retrovirus would make them capable of having that realization, as any 'normal person'. They would have to rationalize the attack conciously and logically in order to want to proceed. Example: regardless of the degree to which their mother were verbally insulted, they would not desire to attack unless they could logically convince themselves that their mother was actually in clear and present danger.

2: The attacker is sociopathic (medically incapable of caring whether the attack is appropriate of justified): see 1 above.

3: The attack is rational and in defense of self or a loved one: the retrovirus would have little or no effect, although it would prevent the attacker from retreating medically into a psy- or socio-pathic state as a reaction to the act in the aftermath. They would likely feel a mild compulsion to turn themselves in.

4: The attacker is somehow rationally justifying the attack as socially appropriate (example: they live in a culture where failure to attack due to insults is known to frequently result in the insulted party being attacked for their perceived cowardice): see 3 above.

It is beyond the purpose and the ability of the drug to impair free will (at least not moreso than alcohol); however, it is still possible for antisocial acts to be performed. You just don't get a medical excuse for your actions.

EDIT: Reiterating that the above definitions of psychopathy and sociopathy are made up by me for clarity of discusson, and not the real thing. Or if so, it is by coincidence.

EDIT2: Clarifying that I am not advocating any position, simply discussing. I will state that I think that it is something that could come up in the real world some time in the next 5 decades.

At tier 3 completion, it is a basic readily available tool. It also provides incentive to spend more than $5 on the game. It also offsets server use a bit.
What do you (and others) think of the ability to purchase 'chat licenses' for $5 per month?

If a problem with RMT spam or the like crops up, just stop selling them.

Bosses should be a one to one threat and Elite Bosses should have a solo hero pushing the envelope of powers and creativity.

Arch-villians should need a super-team, or a really really really smart hero.

Giant Monsters should need the freaking JLA.
It's a derail, but I more or less agree with you. You have to keep in mind that when the game was created, they weren't even sure that people's systems could handle fights with 8 heroes and 24 minions, let alone more than that.

Of course some builds and teams eat Giant Monsters for breakfast these days, so YMMV Not sure if those guys are using only SOs, though.

For the purposes of this discussion, let us define evil as a rational, conscious, antisocial act that results in measurable harm.

Psycopathy is being defined as a medical inability to understand what is and is not antisocial behaviour.

Sociopathy is being defined as a medical inability to care about antisocial behaviour.

When you eliminate the medical reasons, what remains is choice.
