You know that there's this imaginary line from the Wash to mouth of the river Severn that is used to define North and South? Yes? Good...
How about the next meet up takes place north of that line? An even better line for it to take place north of is the line between the Solway Firth and Berwick-upon-Tweed, but I think that's me being far too optimistic.
Come on! We need to stand up for meetings in the North! -
Zero Hour came, and I decided that 8 hours of driving really wasn't what I wanted to do...
Maybe next time we can try to get a bit further North, eh? -
Zero hour (otherwise known as the point at which I have to decide once and for all to go or not instead of flip-flopping) falls between 7am and 8am tomorrow...

Hey guys... Just been told by Hoplite that there are some major roadworks in the center of Bristol, so anyone coming along the M32 is boned (such as me!)
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh dear. I too must use the M32. Actually the M32 is the main route into Bristol from the North, East and West as it is a spur of the M4... Hurrah. -
Here's some constructive points... If you don't like the way GGOOC operates, if you don't like the moderation of GGOOC, why don't you go and start your own global channel and get your friends to join it? GGOOC isn't going to change for you, a lot more people are happy with it the way it is. No-one is forcing you to use GGOOC.
Similarly, you don't like how we operate at GG, go start your own RP meet in another location and get your friends to join you. No-one is forcing you to attend GG either.
If you're unwilling to do either of those things, your complaints about GG, GGOOC and the people that form those communities can't be as great as you like to make out.
What you're doing is like a homeless person going to a soup kitchen for the homeless, then complaining about the soup and the fact that the room is filled with homeless people but yet still eating the soup and staying in the room. -
Don't forget Spear! One of the few remnants of the RG! He's 17...

Ah, seems to me this is public action being divorced from public reaction. IC action minus IC consequence...
So the character wasn't affected by being shot in the head, but it still remains that the character was shot in the head in front of lots of other people. Other people tend to react to people being shot in the head regardless of the fatality of aforementioned shot to the head. The world would be a much more sparsly populated place if we didn't. The fact that we are playing as heroes adds to the fact that we will react not by running away screaming but by confronting the would-be killer.
Reminds me somewhat of the Brute Farce era when the Uber-Evil Sword of Doom would corrupt any being of flesh and blood that touched it. So my robot, on hearing this and coming to the justifiable conclusion that the UESD was a danger to all and sundry, goes and picks it up because he was the only person in the vicinity that could be guaranteed not to be affected. I am then blasted by the person running the "plot" because I wasn't part of the plot. Despite all this taking place right next to Charlie Sparks and my robot being at GG's feet about what, 10 feet away?
GG is a public place, it's in a park. Although the RP takes place in little cliques that basically don't interact, you are not in a soundproof box with the curtains drawn. What you say and do will be noted by other people's characters, and they will react as the players see fit to do so. You can do your thing, but remember where you're doing it. If it's meant to be in some private place, go up a rooftop, go into an SG base just don't do it at GG.
As Z has pointed out, the removal of another player's ability to act is one of the many forms of Godmoding, i.e. you are dictating how another player has to react, much like they are no more than an NPC. Giving yourself power over another player's character is fine if there is consent and it can be deduced that such has been given, but other than that it is a very, very big NO. -

I've only got the A90, M90, A9, M9, M80, A80, M73, M74, A74, M6, M5, M4 and M32 to worry about.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hee hee hee... Quoting myself... Do you realise that of my list of roads all but the last 4 are in Scotland? To be fully accurate I should also include the A92, although it's only about a mile and a half of it...
You don't reach Glasgow until you hit the M73... -
La la la la la la... If I make it to Brostil, I'm scheduling myself to arrive about 3ish. I've only got the A90, M90, A9, M9, M80, A80, M73, M74, A74, M6, M5, M4 and M32 to worry about.
I shall be wearing a kilt, hopefully this will be easily findable, of course I'm not actually going to the convention thingymajigger. So you shall be instructed on my whereabouts, then you must find me! It's like a scavenger hunt! Except that if you try to rip my entrails out and run off I shall be very upset. Possibly even cross. -
Okaaay...
Hmmm. Investigation reveals game starts at 3... That means traffic should be quiet by the time I'm getting there! Aha!
Poo. Investigation also shows Liverpool are playing... M6 might be a bit jammy. Bah. -
I just noticed (after looking back through this thread) that someone (Max) has said that parking in Bristol will be atrocious due to FA Cup Final... Why would parking in Bristol be bad? Isn't it happening in Cardiff?
I ask this due to parking being important if I come hurtling down from Up Here...
I've looked on a map and there seems to be quite a few car parks around Bristol city centre... Hopefully I can find a place... -
Right... My indecision meter has swung round to "GO!" again... It has 7 days of flipping left. If I do decide to do it, I will need some form of contactableness from someone who can round you all up PDQ...
-
It's getting very very hard to resist the original plan of driving to Bristol now...
Not for the meal obviously, but just because there's so many of you there...
This is one of those decisions that'll come right down to the wire for me... It'll be Friday evening when I make my mind up, and Saturday morning when I choose to act or not...
And that then leaves it a bit late to actually tell anyone I'm coming because you'll all be away from computers, as will I... -

Wouldn't it be cheaper on the train mate?
[/ QUOTE ]
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!
No. Not by a long shot. -
Dammit! Because there's sooo many of you going now, I'm getting all itchy in a "I shouldn't, but I'd like to go" way...
I mean you've all rounded yourselves up perfec... Ummm. You're, uh, all going to, ummm, be there? Yeah, that's what I meant.
But £100 worth of diesel doesn't come much cheaper than £100 (legally, but I don't want my car to smell like a chip shop), so I can't. Although I would like to... Arrrrgh!
I either have to win the lottery (4 numbers'll do fine) or consider doing overtime (bleh!) to recoup that amount of loss...
Rar! Damn you West Country for being so far away (and sodding expensive to get to)! -
Simple answer! All have blue steak! Then they just wave it in the general direction of the cooker and slap it on the plate. Juicy, mmmm.

Now if someone was to suggest something closer to Scotland, say even Manchester... In maybe the latter end of the 2nd week of July after I'm back from Norway...
[/ QUOTE ] *sobs* Until the last weekish of July, I'm still at work, even if I'm not at college. Damn A2 continuing students...
[/ QUOTE ]
I said that particular week because I already have the time off booked thanks to my Norway trip, so I don't have to worry about work making it difficult to get down. But if we can arrange a mutually acceptable date for all, I'm sure you might get to catch a glimpse of me at some point... -

While I think you were insane for even contemplating a near 8-hour drive, it would have been great to finally meet you. No chance at all of persuading you?
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm not insane! Am I Eric? *talks to stuffed rabbit*
No chance of persuasion. I have had my slightly more insane friends say that it is a bad idea in terms of the huge expense on magic-make-car-go-liquid. The actual concept of driving down and back in the same day is not considered insane by them except for the fact it shouldn't be attempted on my wages.
Now if someone was to suggest something closer to Scotland, say even Manchester... In maybe the latter end of the 2nd week of July after I'm back from Norway... -
On sober reflection, Wonka's Wild Whistlestop West-Country Wheeze may actually be a seriously economically bad idea. As such I have decided to abandon it on economic grounds, not health and safety fears.

I dont really think that Ravenswing believes that all Englishman, Irishmen, Scots and Welsh hate each other(although i could interpret his post that way)
[/ QUOTE ]
The point that was being made is that if you call something British you have to make very, very sure you aren't just meaning English. I personally find it very annoying and quite insulting when people use English and England interchangably with British and Britain.
It might not seem like a major point to the English, but for the other countries of the UK it often is. -
I have to revisit Birdy's point and twist slightly... Is this British or English? The two do not mean the same thing.
-
Oooo... Electric flannels... Mmmm, feel the exfoliating power of frying your face off...

Totally off topic, I once saw that disclaimer at the end of film, following a line saying "This film is based on a true story"... It's true! But the events portrayed are fictional and any resemblance to persons living or dead is entirely coincidental! Hollywood, dontcha just love the consistency?
Back on topic...
We could go round in circles about plagarism and concepts, I had a Soviet hero last summer, does that mean that that concept couldn't be used again? If you get technical, there are only 7 concepts in CoH for characters, the ATs... Deep and dangerously silly that road leads, but it all rests on how fine you chop up the definition of concept...
I would say there is no need to ask permission from the US SG, I don't even think it is rude not to ask about this. If the members of the US SG get wound up that someone else in the world applied the same historical references to the same concept, they really need a reality check.
Are most US players even aware of the EU servers anyway?
And if you're really worried about plagarism, put quotemarks round it..
Or just call it SSSR or USSR... -
Did the SG called CCCP ask the USSR if they could the Cyrillic characters that made up that country's name in Russian? CCCP translates into the Roman alphabet as SSSR, standing for Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik.
The combination of name and concept is not plagarism (unless the full evolution of the concept is exactly identical), taking from historical events and entities is not plagarism. How many fictions have been written set in WWII? More than one of them will have the same idea behind them. How about films about pirates? And then there's been at least 4 films featuring the Titanic, and they all have the ship sinking at the end, shockingly similar to each other!
The USSR exisited, in its own language it was written as CCCP, it contained Russians who were Soviets. Isn't the US SG as guilty of plagarism as the conceptual EU SG of similiar idea if the use of name and concept already taken is plagarism?
