Why, he would wear white socks of course.

This would probably only make me a middle-aged gamer, but I do smile warmly any time one of my characters receives the Adamant badge, though for entirely different reasons than the devs intended.

(And sheesh, forget to check the thread for a day or so and the thing explodes into fond memories of all kinds of things. We SO need Cuppa to add "Favorite Transformer" "Favorite Superfriend" and yes, sigh, "Favorite Doctor" to the voting)

Exactly. I haven't slavishly taken Tough/Weave on my Regen precisely because I knew that Stealth offered a decent defense buff only slightly less than Weave and offered as a level 6 power.

Information could lead to singular builds, but I don't think that it will.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yeah... exactly. I did decide to get Tough, though, when I realized it provides almost 4 times the resistance that Resilience does..... I was a little surprised by that, seeing as how the descriptions are similare (one says 'some resistance' while the other says 'slightly resistant').

    [/ QUOTE ]
Tough is a toggle, Resilience is inherent; Toggle powers are always more powerful than inherent powers.

    [ QUOTE ]
The BIGGEST benefit of posting numbers is that, when dev's introduce major changes, ...

a.) potentials for abuse can be more easily noticed.
b.) potentials for bugs can be easily identified.
c.) players can follow the logic of the dev's and, hopefully, flame less.
d.) players can feel more confidant in their power & slotting choices.
e.) If done right, game balance can be tracked by both dev & player.

    [/ QUOTE ]

While I understand your argument, this is something I don't exactly agree with. Because you want to start to introduce the numbers into the mix, people start seeing their characters as less of a "character" and more of a jumble of statistics and figures. It becomes less about creating a character you enjoy and more about being worried about how your character performs without that extra .08 of damage.

In the end, to me at least, I think the more "numbers" and "statistics" you have available to you, the greater the risk of cheapening the game and the more destructive it becomes to the enjoyment of the game.

    [/ QUOTE ]

It is not a measure of me "wanting" to have numbers in the game, as it is more of a measure of players "needing" numbers in the game.

For a captain to effectively lead a team, TF or super group, they have to know how the measure the efficiency of their team. Would you rather have someone with 1 Heal, as opposed to 4 or 6, as your team healer?
1 DefBuf as opposed to 6 for defense shields?
6 Damage and no Accuracy for your scrappers / tankers?

The first two reasons listed for posting numbers are to make it easier to identify existing / potential problem areas.

The last three reasons focus solely on providing
1.) players a means to understand dev choices
2.) dev's a means to understand good vs. bad development choices.

We could understand why perma-Anything was undesirable to the dev's in both a PVE / PVP sense, because the player disproportionately uses Nth level powers at the exclusion of others, which is not what the dev's intended.

If we play PVP, we ARE going to want to know why we lose more often when our builds lack efficient slotting. Otherwise, we get disappointed and play a different hero which, MAY OR MAY NOT, be better slotted.

If we have the ability to know about how to slot better we enjoy the game longer.

We don't really have an in-game sensei or police academy training course to push us to better limits as heroes, but it would be nice to know whether or not I can effectively take on 5 as opposed to only 2 minions.

Yes, we now have an arena, but why not more advanced tutorials.

Ones that could teach about varying aspects of teaming?
Ones that could be like a police academy training course?

There's a reason why most of us do not slot most of our damage powers with 6 Damage enhancements.
We balance Accuracy vs. Damage and know we want to NOT miss.

    Something I've always wondered...

Why do people feel the need that they *have* to be "Optimal" to have fun? Why does everything have to boil down to the numbers?

    [/ QUOTE ]

THAT may be one of the most intelligent and obvious questions I've ever seen. As a player who takes his flaws along with his uberness in some cases (my phantom army is awesome, but without them I'm little more than a squishy in a big body), I could care less about building the perfect character or being perfect at everything.

But, I CAN see where others are coming from when they want things to be perfect. They want to emulate a certain type of hero, and if perfection is a requisite part of their character's design, then it can be disconcerting to have that affect your gameplay.

I agree, though, that the fun in the game (for me, IMHO) is just enjoying the missions, taking in the scenery, fighting bad guys, teaming up and kicking butt.

And, as an aside to CuppaJo, all I can say is I'm shocked and outraged that anyone would threaten you guys, even if the intention is not malicious. This is, after all, a GAME, folks. Not real. Entertainment. Perhaps those who have been that way need to step back from the "online world" of computer gaming and take a look at themselves. This is not a slam against those who disagree with statements the devs make, but rather a slam against those who believe that hurling insults, threats and profanities against the devs are perfectly OK. That it helps things. That it makes people take them seriously.

God bless you for your work. I don't envy your job at times, but I wholeheartedly respect everything you guys do. Next time you're in Chicago, steak dinner is on me! ;-)

    [/ QUOTE ]

    The answer...?

Take two players who both have the same AT and power selections.

    Slot 1 for concept.
    Slot the other for effectiveness.

Which one enjoys the game more?

Seriously...? This is just a hypothetical, because enjoyment is relative.

But, if BOTH are effectively slotted for the powers they CHOOSE, both can enjoy the game without feeling disappointed when the player next to you stays healthy longer and does more damage.

Thank you. My only concern is what is the diffentiation between the roles of Scrappers and Tanker, and Scrappers and Blaster. It's the one thing I never seem to get a clear answer to. Could we get an AT Roles Official thread? Maybe this is the wrong place to post this, but I don't know where else to put it.

And this "feedback" is great. Thank you Cuppa and Devs. It's always really nice to know that we're heard and that our opinions matter.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    One more thing, Cuppa.

We need to have a page on the CoH website that accurately reflects not only the current base values for all powers as well a detailed breakdown of how slotting impacts our character growth, but proposed modifications (IE %'s, etc.) to said values.

Right now, I can go to the Game Features list on the Coh.com website and what is reflected is not only erroneous, but seriously out of date...if not, useless.

We have no other means to make valid player choices either based on concept or real-numbers effectiveness (IE min-maxing...)

And while we can download a PDF of the manual, it too suffers from out-of-date syndrome...
  18. Thank you very much, Cuppa! This is greatly appreciated...

  21. "My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Tsoo."

Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Tsoo."

Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name.

Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Tsoo."

Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Tsoo!' How do you do!
    Now your gonna die!!"

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong."

He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-[censored] that named you "Tsoo.'"

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I came away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Tsoo! I still hate that name!"
