    Hello, all

First time I've really introduced myself to the Virtue server at large, I've been around since 2005 in fact my account was made.. Lemme see.. Created On: Nov 4, 2005
Anyway, since it's my first time introducing myself.. Hi, I'm Jade. I've been on the server and forums here and there, play multiple characters, RPer and strangely enough with all my time in the game ( although admittedly some of it was inactive as I quit for several years ) I've never quite managed to make it to level 50 ( although I hold a few characters that are fairly close. )
  2. Well, I've also noticed.. Excuse this post.. A lot of hostility in reaction to this thread and aimed towards me in particular, I've tried to be civil and really I refuse to lower myself to the level of flinging insults at people, bickering with them and berating them for having a differing opinion from my own.. Nay and rather, I respect them for having a differing opinion.

With all the bad blood, though and all the anger and hostility I'm beginning to perceive from many of the posts made recently in this thread I think I'm going to quietly bow out and allow it to die away. Perhaps I made a mistake in thinking this was an issue that could be talked over, it seems people are not ready to look at things objectively and without malice or bigotry.

Everyone, be well. I mean that.
  3. I've seen a lot of responses and varying opinions and stances, I really like that and I'd like to thank all of you that have kept civil in the conversation and offered up balanced arguments. It's nice to receive such.

A couple of things I'll touch in response to some people posting here.

    1. I'm not judging anyone. I never said that 'they shouldn't and that was that' I said I thought they shouldn't and that it was my opinion, unlike those that simply state it as being wrong and leave it at that I explicitly state that these are my opinions and in no way, shape or form are fact or absolute. Not only that, but I never condemned anyone for their behaviour or actions. Although my words may seem condemning, they're not, I'm actually rather if you'll notice just asking why people seem to think in the manner I'm observing.
    2. I can understand the dislike of those that do it in public, again, like I've said.. If it's not in public I think it's okay, private is okay but public is not. As I've said it can bleed into the public without even being posted there by the MRPers or ERPers by those who read their profiles and decide to berate them for no reason. This is the problem I have.
    3. I can also understand the dislike of those MRPers and ERPers who don't respect that not everyone wishes to do this and by all means, report them and ignore them. If someone tried to do that to me forcefully and didn't take no, I would. I wouldn't stand for it and I'd be offended as well. I'm not defending those, I'm defending the ERPers and MRPers that keep it amongst themselves. Some are perfectly nice and innocent people.
Anyway, I hope my stance is understood and has become more clear. I'll be reading through the newer responses over time and trying to respond to them in due time as well, it's very difficult and overwhelming though to respond to so many diverse opinions, questions and stances.

The hypocrisy is in that they have a high and mighty attitude as if they're better than someone else then claim otherwise or often berate or find it offensive when others have a high and mighty attitude towards them. The hypocrisy is also in the fact that I have a sneaking suspicion those who are especially vocal on this subject ( being against it and acting superior ) are probably guilty of doing it as well. ( I've checked the global of some insulting others for it and noticed the same global on characters that have "ERP Welcome" etc listed in their profiles. Evidently they don't realize how incriminating a global can be. )

As mentioned above some have it listed in their profile "ERP/MRP welcome" and the like to display to others that they do this and are interested in it so to attract like-minded people who they can enjoy rp with. Often when people with this listed in their profile leave an area or are standing around together I've seen global light up or people begin to insult over local ( usually global though ) going on about this, that and the other and how it's wrong and deplorable et cetera et cetera.

It's weird alright and creepy some 40 year old guy pretending to be a 23 year old girl and ERP with some 25 year old guy pretending to be an 29 year old guy. It sends chills down my spine just thinking about this or, why would anyone want to do this? These fake relationships are about as odd as they come. It's one thing to meet people online it's another to not meet them and ERP with them.

It's like phone sex if you ask me it makes absolutely no sense. Can't you go out and meet real people for these types of relationships? This is a hero/villain action game how anyone thought to bring this type of game play into I'm not sure.

In the end I just chalk it up to internet weirdness and try not to give it much attention.
I can't see this, to be honest.. Plus how do you know the general populace of City of Heroes isn't actually what they claim to be? I'd guess the average player ranges in the 20-30 age category with a few exceptions to that. I'm a 23 year old female IRL ( That's my eye on my avatar ) though I guess my views could be a little naive since I tend to lean towards the idealistic side when it comes to dealing with other people and what I expect out of them ( IE - Honesty and decency )

Well, it makes no sense for you.. But again, they may have their own reasons for doing it and perhaps they just plain find it enjoyable and fun. Isn't that what the game is about in the end? Perhaps even they need some diversity from the monotony of the game and don't want to stop playing but rather to seek something out within the game different from 'kill x number of creatures' or 'xx has been kidnapped' frankly I could understand that, I get tired of doing missions over and over too. There are only so many times I can kill Snaptooth before I start calling shennanigans and just get painfully bored with it.

In my experience many RPers who do these things are also in rl relationships which brings in the whole 'are you cheating on your rl partner?' into the equation and that's an argument for another day ( I say if your rl partner is okay with it, no. It's just a game and just fantasy... But then I tend to be more liberal than others ) so I don't know if I agree on the whole 'why not go meet real people?' also some people simply can't, won't or aren't comfortable with that. Take into consideration the vast array of personalities and differences between people in the game. Maybe they're anti-social, maybe they just don't like people, maybe they're disabled or maybe they have another perfectly valid reason for not wanting to dive into that?

Again, I'm more liberal than others. I tend to be more about the love and peace thing and have the idealistic expectation that everyone should live and let live.. Things just seem to run much more smoothly when people are tolerant and logical rather than bigoted and angry.
  6. Apologies, I thought the acronyms were well known.

As for it being a Teen Rated game, yes.. But again, consenting adults should be allowed to do what they want to do in private, notice I'm specifically mentioning in private because I do agree that public ERP is just.. Not right.. It's a Teen rated game, yes and it's not appropriate when there may be younger players or RPers around but in private who is it hurting? I think perhaps even the gms and mods may agree with me on that term, if it's kept private then it's not a big deal.

I suppose I'm less prudish about it than others. See, I've spent a lot of time in another game called Second Life that has a lot of very overt and public ERP, frankly after my excursion and time there I've become more tolerant of it because I finally decided "It's going to happen anyway, I don't have to take place in it if I don't want to, the people doing it may be perfectly good people just doing it for an escape from reality or simple enjoyment and frankly if it just horribly offends me I can remove myself from the area or whatever and be done with it."

Again, my thing is that I don't understand the high and mighty attitude in relations to this. Why cause a lot of drama insulting and berating someone for something they're doing in private?
  7. I wonder.. Lately I've noticed a lot of hostility and uptight behaviour in the game amongst the players, usually I'd attribute this to generally being on the internet and people being cocky, egotistical and convinced that they're superior in some way, shape or form.. To be honest, I probably should but I figured I'd say something for the sake of saying something and perhaps making others think as well as seeing what the rest of the community thought about the issue.

Of course I'm on the Virtue server and I'm an RPer as many of us are on this server, it's something that not everyone does admittedly but I find it fun and I find it relaxing. My problem is that a lot of people seem to have the mentality that things like MRP and ERP are somehow wrong. That those that partake in these forms of RP are somehow 'lower life forms' than they. It both amuses and disturbs me that people seem to have such a high and mighty mentality, I'm wondering.. Why do people feel like that?

Not saying I do it, just saying that it doesn't seem like there's anything wrong with this. We're assuming here both parties involved are at least 18 years old RL so that means they're consenting adults, that assumed don't people have the right to do what they want and rp what they want in public? I can see a concern if it was in public, I can see how people would be offended and heck I probably would be too.. But I've noticed that despite the fact that most MPRers and ERPers do it in private they're still mocked and insulted for it as if they're lesser for taking part in something they enjoy.

No ones better than anyone else is what I'm getting at. So why act like this? Why not just.. You know? Live and let live, get along with each other and show some common civility? If you don't like something, you don't have to take part in it et cetera et cetera.

    That's also the internet.

    2) Your message board account was started two months ago. While it's certainly possible that you've just never registered for the boards before and have been around for years, some people just look at the join date and think "n00b!"

In my wretched attempt at what you'll probably consider a flame, I say this: "Physician, heal thyself."

I'm quite calm, thank you. Expressing concern does not indicate I'm in a panic. Should this game not be okay, I'd certainly live.

As for my date.. I've never joined the forums. Taken directly from my account,

  12. Well, I'd like to address first of all, those flaming me. As per usual in any forum you post something like this, you're bound to get flamed/trolled.. I chock it up to being on the internet, people with anonymity act like punks. To those flamers, well.. Get a life and get over yourselves..

To the positive responses, I really appreciate them.

To the constructive but not entirely positive responses, I appreciate your honesty as well.

To those that disagree say I'm a 'doom sayer', et cetera, I'd say.. Don't think this is being blown entirely out of proportion. 100k may be a successful MMO but it's still pretty low. I'm not even comparing CoH to WoW, just MMO's in general. I mean take into consideration the fact that a game like.. oh.. RuneScape boasts more members ( Paying members, mind you. Subscribers. ) than CoH and I call it a bit disheartening. It may be because RuneScape being a java-based game is a convenient alternative to games requiring somewhat high end machines but I still find it a little disheartening.

I'm just concerned for the future of this game. You may think it's an unfounded concern and give me so many reasons why you think it is, but the fact of the matter is, I am concerned. I feel I have valid reasons and I just want to read objective views on this subject. I'm getting them, but.. I feel some could perhaps use a 'chill pill'.
  13. Have them make/get their PayPal, pay them the money for the Booster Pack and tell them that's the gift you want to give them. You can pay for these things through PayPal via your CoH account making it very convenient.
  14. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a CoH hater, I love CoH. That's why I'm so concerned for it. Running for almost six years now, CoH is pretty dated. It's graphics aren't that great ( But we're hoping Going Rogue fixes that ), it's engine is dated and it's combat may be a little dated as well.. I also notice many of the servers ( Guardian for instance ) are nearly dead ( Almost empty ) and the most populated servers don't seem to have that many people on them in the great scheme of things.

Recently I had read that CoH released their subscriber numbers for 2009 and it rounded nearly 130,000 people ( Not quite reaching 130,000 - Something more like in the 128's or something, I think. ) and I notice quite a lot of talk.. Well, everywhere.. From CoH players, haters and lovers alike.. Frankly I'm worried for the game..

It'd be nice if NCSoft staff could answer this, but I don't hold my breath for that.. My question is.. How much is actually riding on the release of Going Rogue being successful? If it's unsuccessful, is that it? Are we looking at dealing with another Dungeon Runner or Tabula Rasa? I hope the game will be okay, but.. At the moment from looking at subscription numbers, discussion and the facts.. It looks kind of grim.
  15. So, yeah. A lot of discussion on sheathable weapons and scabbards but nothing on my other idea's ( Costumes and powers ) or almost nothing.. Any thoughts/agreements/whatever?
  16. Some good points, ToySoldierZolgar - I'd still like to see it tried, though.
  17. Which was kind of my point. Those cartoons tended to be less serious than CoH - While CoH isn't a totally serious game, still some level of seriousness is expected and I just don't think "Derp derp rectal sword" or "Hamma Time" (Space) works.

I don't really think it'd be that hard to have sheathable weapons, to be honest. I mean World of Warcraft has them. When they're not drawn they're either on your side or back and when they are, those on your side or back vanish. It really doesn't seem like that daunting a mechanic. I'm sure the dev's could manage. - Full on scabbards on the other hand, yes. That may be a little tougher.. But I'm not asking for much, just a little.
  18. Quote:

Which is great for Bugs Bunny who is a cartoon or Prime ( I assume we're talking about the original transformers ) back when things weren't taken so seriously.. But these days, at least somewhat of a coherent explanation is usually desired. Not just "Derp derp, hammer space." or "Derp derp, rectal sword."

Plus personally I just think that scabbards and sheathing weapons would look and be cool.
  19. I've made a post in the past with suggestions.. I've thought of more since then, I felt that perhaps it would be more prudent to go over my previous idea's while also adding new suggestions in.

    They are..

    • Costumes & Customization
    1. Why is there a cat, rodent, reptile and demon tail but nothing else? Why not a canine, fox or other types of tails? I'd like to see different types of tails as belt options.. Canine tails, Cow tails and Mythical Kitsune style tails.
    2. I've seen it on other NPC's in game but it's not a costume option. These skirts that are like capes ( In that they hang and flutter freely with movement ) - Why can't we have these? I'd love to see skirt options like that that moved freely and fluttered.
    3. Robes feel kind of.. Bland.. I think the robes could be improved upon. Why are there only Martial Arts Robes? Why not Magic Robes? I think it'd be pretty neat to have Magic Robes added to costumes.
    4. Helmets. Am I the only person that feels like helmets are too few and far between in the game? Personally I'd like to see something like Helmets with hair ( Kind of Ala a Thanagarian Helmet ) We're talking a helmet where you'd still have hair, your eyes and most of your face showing. It'd be kind of like a cross between a mask and a helmet. I think that'd be really keen to see in-game.
    5. Different types of heads - Am I the only one that finds it a little frustrating that the only animal-style heads are Monstrous Heads which look.. Well.. Ugly? It'd be nice to have something like perhaps cat-style heads ( We're talking tigers, lions, panthers and such ) that looked a tad humanish so they'd at least not look butt-ugly and could be made slightly attractive ( Because who wouldn't love making a Lion-O or Cheetara style character? or to be able to make a character like a Swat Kats style ) - Canine style heads and likewise would also be cool ( You could make all sorts of mythical creatures given the proper parts )
    6. Scabbards - I don't know, it bothers me that characters seemingly pull weapons from their rectums. When I see a scrapper who has nothing on their person suddenly reach backwards and produce a sword from no where, I wince.. And I think to myself how much better it'd be if there were just sheathable weapons. I'd like to see scabbards as an extra costume option ( solely for weapon classes ) - You could have scabbards for Katana's which would go on the side or back, claymores and the like on the back, warmaces and whatnot hanging from a leather strap on the side and I think that'd be a much more realistic and cool option than just having them.. Produced.. From.. Places unknown.. And probably places best left unsaid.. ( NOTE: I'd also like to see holsters for guns. Assault rifles on the back, pistols on the sides and so on and so-fourth. Archery would have a bow and arrow on their back with a quiver and all. )

    • Powers
    1. Colours of travel powers - I've always wondered, why can't we change the colour of travel powers? Such as the colour of the energy featured in Super Speed or the mist that comes off you with Super Jump or Flight? While we're at it, why not rehaul the entire Travel Power system and add some new stuff in to freshen it up?
    • Flight Aura's ( It would be an option for those with flight to choose to have a flight aura that would go on and off when you flew. Such as Fiery or perhaps a glow or trail of light behind you. That'd be really awesome to see and I think a lot of people would fancy it. )
    • Different types of flight ( Okay, given the mechanics on this one are probably a bit tricky.. I'd like to see different types of flight such as a costume option rocket pack ( jet pack ) or a hover-board. Giving just one type of flight just makes it feel kind of stagnant. )
    • Add to teleportation ( As opposed to the current animation and effect, add some new animations and effects. Such as a teleport that perhaps opens a tube of energy ( Think Boom Tubeish ) or a teleport where you poof or simply just vanish and reappear. )
    • Super Jump ( Add in Aura's for Super Jump and my most favorite idea that I still think would be awesome, glider capes. It's fine and well to have the normal Super Jump but I think it'd be beyond awesome to be able to jump, spread my cape out and have that as an animation option. )
    • Super Speed ( Again, the ability to change the colour of the Super Speed energy would be nice.. Other than that, I don't really have any personally astounding idea's to give on how to improve it further.. It's pretty good as is.. Just.. It'd be nice if you could run UP stuff and run on water as opposed to swimming. )
    2. Extra Power Options - I want to see extra power options. I would love to see a Blaster given the option of a new addition - Such as perhaps when you choose a Blaster you're given the option of having a Power Ring ( Magical, Technology or whatever ) - Your ring would be the source of your power and your blasts.. I think that'd be pretty neat.. I also question why for instance, Scrapper ( Or at least one melee Archetype ) doesn't have a bo-staff. Staffs are great weapons, so why not? - Alternatively, wouldn't it be awesome to have a magical staff for your magical blaster? That way you'd actually be able to look like a spell-caster assuming you wanted to go the classical magic-way? Or maybe even a book being the option for what you held. I think these choices could be added to freshen up the powers a lot.

    -

Anyway, that's about all I can think of right off the top of my head. Hope these suggestions are liked..

    1. With a cape/glider, how do you take into account for the jump distance despondency? When you jump, it's a quick and fast ascent while a quick, but nearly fruitless descent. You don't get too far on the way down in comparison to going up.
With a cape/glider, the descent is what's REALLY propelling you forward, rather than a more normal jump upward.
I disagree. I think it'd work perfectly.. You'd jump up, your cape would spread out, you'd glide for a little ways and then you'd drop and do it again.. That's just me.. I was thinking that the capes dynamics would be something more like a Hang Glider and a Parachute. A cross between the two.

    2. The idea of some sort of hoverdisk is somewhat odd when thinking of game mechanics... Do you just summon it and it appears out of nowhere? I can get behind it if it does, but what happens for things like knockback, or Martial Arts? Kicks and Punches are gonna look a bit odd when you're trying to do so on a 'balanced' disk, considering more 'natural' physics would cause it to tip over.
I think it'd have to vanish to enter combat mode. Because when you're in Flight mode it changes you to Hover when you enter combat. Right?

But I do support adding a larger variety of temporary powers that you can get anytime, as long as they're not too strong. I like the baseball bat and revolved you can get recipes for and more powers along those lines would be awesome!
    Exactly.

Frag, smoke or grenades like that. Utility belt stuff, y'know. We've got utility belt options in the costume screen, why should they look useless? See, I went to all the places I could find Temporary Powers that I could use wherever and bought them all up just so I'd have something for my utility belt that I wear.

Any good normal 'Natural' hero has to have at least a few goodies on their person. It's like.. The law or something.. :P

And I suppose with the Tech Wings and Piston Boots.. Eh.. It's not enough for me.. The Piston Boots don't really do anything and they're gaudy and ugly.. They hardly fit with any outfit you could make and they have no alternative texture options so you've either got boots that match or big honking Piston Boots that stand out horribly against Tights and all. Then it just looks like crap and bugs me..

Plus even when you jump they don't create much of an effect. That little dust-ring that is supposed to be there? Barely visible. They suck.

There needs to be more in my opinion.
  23. My reasoning for the Glider Cape and all for Flight Powers and what not is because y'know.. I play a Natural Scrapper, she's not supposed to have any super meta-human powers. She can't jump huge distances with just her legs and I'd like to have the alternative choice with Super Jump to have something to show "Hey, look. I'm actually using this to do this." - The Glider Cape would be that. It'd allow me to explain away why my character can zip up the sides of buildings or glide insane distances over the city, landing on the ground and managing NOT to break both her ankles into dust.

Same with the hover boards and all. What if someones tech? Maybe they want something different. A hover board.. The Prestige Power Slide would be a good animation for flight. Add a Hover Board under and a viola there you've got a Hover Board Flight.

Might not be all as easy as I make it sound but I think they're still excellent ideas.
  24. I've personally ever since I've played this game ( I've been playing for a while. My account was made in 2005. ) have wanted to see more in the way of Temporary Powers or Secondaries for other Archetypes. I've noticed that although I can buy Temporary Powers in the Arena, frustratingly I can't use them outside of the Arena or PvP. I'd like a change in that.. I think it would be nice and add a little new spice to PvE if I could carry a few Temporary Powers on me such as Grenades ( Stun, Web, Smoke, Tear Gas etc ), the Jaunt Initializer or the other Temporary Powers and use them for missions or really whatever I'd like to use them for. I think it's silly that they don't work anywhere but PvP and the Arena.

I'd like to see these Temporary Powers for use anywhere you want to use them because you do pay money for them ( Influence. 10k a pop, too! ) or alternatively I'm speaking for Scrappers here and Brutes, I'd like to see a new Secondary added to these classes, basically I'd like to have Gadgets and Tech. I think it'd be really keen to have a Martial Arts Scrapper that has a secondary set as Gadgets so you could use tech and such as I imagine someone without powers probably would. After all, going up against people who can take bullets to the chest, blast energy beams out their hands and all that I'm thinking as just a normal costumed fighter I'm going to want at least something more than my fist. Bolas, Shuriken, Powder, Smoke Bombs, Grenades, Bombs or SOMETHING more.

Just a suggestion! It'll be interesting to see how others receive this and if they agree with me. I think it'd be great and awesome myself.

    --

    Tacked on

I'd also like to suggest alternative modes of flight.

I think it'd be nice to see hover boards, actual jet packs ( That go faster than the Raptor Pack ) and the like for flight..

For Super Jump I think it'd be keen to have alternative animations such as perhaps one ala Glider Cape ( Where you use your cape assuming you're wearing one and spread it out to go farther. )
