What about the oh-so-vaunted #3?
3) Playing with lower level friends.
It's the devs that decided what Exemplar-ing should be, not us. All we asked for is #3, but we assumed that there would be a similar benefit to Exemplaring as there is to Sidekicking.
It just ain't so. -
Great illustration, Fire...
Getting defeated on purpose while exemplared is just, if you'll pardon me, dumb.
Once the debt is payed off, you'll get influence instead! -
The thing is, paying off debt is a false reward.
Having debt doesn't prevent me from advancing, or gaining infulence along the way. IF debt had some other drawback than slower advancement, then the Exemplar "reward" might mean something.
Why not let us pay off our debt and gain influence? Then when we weren't in debt, give us 2x influence for being an Exemplar. Otherwise it seems there's a very narrow use for the system.
If you read my original post, nowhere do I say I'll ever refuse to Exemplar someone. I also take note that it's the only way to get mission badges you might have missed.
I don't count it for the "Defeat 100 X" badges, since you can get those without being an Exemplar... easier in fact.
All I'm saying is that I think some changes could be made to make it more attractive without unbalancing the game for your Aspirant.
Edited to say: I *really* don't understand the people who are getting purposely in debt to Exemplar longer... If you pay off your debt, wouldn't you rather have the influence than pay off your self-imposed debt? -
My friends will advance just as fast, or faster if they're Sidekicked to me.
How is that selfish? -
I was a fan of this "feature"... until I tried it a few times.
Let's see, for the priviledge of playing with a low-level friend, I get: Reduced power set.
No xp, but debt reduction at 100%
If no debt, I get "low-level" xp converted to Influence.
Reducing my debt is nice, but wouldn't I be better off just continuing to hunt at my level? That's progression, albeit slow. It's not like I'm *not* paying off my debt doing that. Not to mention I'm getting full influence as well.
Exemplars get *nothing* of value for doing it. Risk does NOT equal reward here... we're still at risk. When we are defeated, we get *more* debt to pay off, and more liklihood of debt as we have gimped powers.
Devs, is there a reason why there's no logical reason to Exemplar, other than to *maybe* pick up a couple badges for missions?
In all cases, I'd rather Sidekick them up than Exemplar down. Simply paying off my debt faster is not a reward, and neither is influence.
Suggestions:
Keep the system the way it is, but let us have all our powers. Simply reduce our enhancements down to the appropriate level.
Award *significant* influence when you have no debt. I'm talking like 2-3 times what we'd make off even cons at our own level. *That* would make the risk = reward a little closer, even though high level heroes don't need the influence much anyway.
As it is right now, an Exemplar is at a huge disadvantage, and not getting anything out of it in return. "But you get to play with your friends!"
Yeah, I can also play with my friends if I either SK them, or roll a new toon to level up with them. Both are better options to my mind than using the Exemplar system. -
Um... so? Let 'em get their badges. Move on to other areas or groups...

I'm with the evening of September 21. That's a Tuesday, the day before the video winners are announced.
