Quote:Speaking for those who'll use this and be spared the strife of being infected, I say thank you Kid. 'Tis a very good thing you've done here.
Also, I'd like to thank Sooner Spirit, she's the one who helped me get the map pack without further risking my own system. I also owe a shout out to Major T for his guidance and advice when I toiled with the effects of the virus a few weeks ago. -
Quote:Boricua may shed some light on the specifics of what happened to his friend, but I can tell you what happened to my system. The virus shuts down your Windows Security Center, which controls your anti-virus and firewall software. It replicates in your registry, to the tune of roughly 17 different files, at least three of which are executables that will reinfect your system upon reboot if you do not remove them ahead of time. This can be difficult, particularly for people with less computer experience. Ultimately, the virus collects handy info like personal data to be fired off to a server somewhere in the nether-reaches of the interwebs.Just out of curiosity, how would one KNOW that they've downloaded a virus from that?
Warning signs to look for...
If your system suddenly gives you security update warnings, particularly for programs that you are not currently running.
Alert icons appearing in your task tray, again for programs you are not running or do not have installed on your pc.
Sudden, unexplained lag in system performance. I'm not talking about ingame lag, but rather when you're running basic programs like Internet Explorer, Word, Solitare, etc.
Lastly, if your browser starts redirecting you to websites you do not intend to go to, also known as browser hijacking. If this happens to you, seek help immediately. If you do not know how to remove viruses, malware, trojans, etc from your pc, get help. Browser hijacking programs can, and often do, trash your system and leave you vulnerable to identity theft. -
That's awesome of ya Kid, it would be a shame if people didn't get to benefit from all the hard work that goes into finding the data and putting it together in map packs for all of us to enjoy.

Quote:I hear ya Vega, but this makes the forth case I know of where someone downloaded a map pack and got a lovely parting gift to go with it. I do not know when Beefcake and Co. started using the current host, IIRC they used to host downloads on their own site, but something seems "off" about that host. Speaking with friends outside of this community, that host has a growing rep for giving guests more than they wanted in downloads.Hmmm, I have it already. I got no trojans, viruses, or malware of any kind from downloading it. I just scanned the exe again. It comes up clean.
Let me be clear, I'm not blaming Vidiotmaps, Badge-Hunters, Beefcake, or anyone involved in creating the map pack (so don't send me anymore PMs $%*&@#@ at me about it). There is a problem, when four different people, on four different systems get the have the same type of problem corresponding to the same site... there is an issue. -
As some of you might recall, I got bit by this some time ago. As I stated previously, I do not think the issue is with the downloaded file, but rather with the host site Megaupload.com. A friend, bravely, downloaded the Issue 17 map pack, scanned it, and installed it. She then gave me a copy of the file, I too scanned it and installed it. Blessedly neither of us have had any issue with it.
Again, I strongly suspect the problem lies with Megaupload.com, its server, or one of the third party advertisers on their site. Please extend my sincere sympathies to your friend in dealing with this particularly evil virus. -
Quote:That's awesome M I, and very, very true!Crud! Crud! Crud! Crud!
Batter up and Bunker down
Sooner's 'bout to ROCK this town.
Ghost and Shade and Demon Horde,
are all lined up across the board.
When scenes jump from friend to friend
You KNOW the peace is soon to end.
So as we watch this rising tide,
Best strap in for a bumpy ride!
*Dig it note: If you pace it right, this would work for a PT cadence. Hooah* -
Quote:Oh that conversation ought to be interesting.Vir felt his face go slack with shock. He shook his head, took himself back under control, and stood. Don't bother. I'll pass on the family's regards myself.
Quote:Grandfather shrugged. "You say radiation, I say ancient power deep within the earth." Ben cocked his head at that... was the spirit making a joke? But he was still speaking. "It doesn't matter what you call it. Find it, draw on it, and you can use it to make yourself stronger and your enemies weaker. Find it, Ben."
Ben glanced up at the bright sun high overhead, then closed his eyes and began learning how to find and use the power of radiation held in the rocks deep beneath the earth. -

Anyone know if/when an update for Issue 17 and Demon Summoning will arrive?
*I asked a similiar question elsewhere, but thusfar all I've gotten is one no-so-helpful post and a smartassed PM in reply* -
I've been looking around, but I cannot find anything on a potential update for Mids' Hero Builder for Issue 17 and Demon Summoning. Anyone out there know if an update is in the works, if one's already available in some dark corner of the interwebs, or if we'll be waiting until later (possibly Going Rogue) before we see an update?
Again, I've searched here - using mids, mids', hero builder, Issue 17, and Demon Summoning in a varitey of combinations - to no avail. I've checked the Mids' site, here, but it still shows the last update which added Dual Pistols back in March.
Any help and/or info would be much appreciated, and, as always, links to relavant sites/posts are great! -

Hahahahahahahahahhaahhaa!
Jagged... you sneaky $%&#@ $@*#$ you. -
Yes, he used the word "some" and not the word "all".
Quote:Correction: In almost every zone. (I think Faultline is perhaps the only zone that DIDN'T get any new ones.)
The new badges will up the count(s) to 8, not 5, in most zones. Hazard zones and PvP zones are two exceptions that spring to mind. In addition to the accolade, you'll also receive merits for each one completed. -
Check your ingame email Wed, I'll send you some.

If/when you see me online... call me, we'll take care of it.

I'll say July 20th, but since this post will likely be long gone before Doc fires up the next game, we're probably both going to get beaten to these picks later. =)

Quote:This generalization is presumptuous and rude, everyone's financial situation is their own business and lecturing anyone about saving $150 in a month is out of line.So... My only recommendation is to rectify that situation. You have a game, you have a HUGE portion of it available to you... But you're shying away from it because you feel your machine is a toaster. Well, here's a headline, it's not going to get any better for your machine as Ultra Mode comes down the pipe and starts working at turning your video card into Swiss cheese. All the stuff after Ultra Mode? It's very likely going to be optimized for Ultra Mode.
Save your money to improve your machine. Spare change, savings fund, whatever... I got my latest video card (NVidia 9800GT) for $150 (from a store, not out of the back of somebody's car), and it's been fantastic, even handles Ultra Mode on Test. If you can't save $150 in a month, something's got to give.
Quote:Don't like the story? Learn to roleplay. Learn to write. IMAGINE! The Rogue Isles don't need to be a home for villains alone. Your character can easily be a renegade, a mercenary, a person in a bad situation, or what-have-you. Lunatics and monsters need not apply. And if you're not at all into roleplay, then what the Hell is the problem with the story, anyway? You can ignore that just as easily.
Quote:How about Fridays at 9 P.M. Eastern, 5 Pacific. It's a Friday, people often duck out early on Fridays, giving them time to get prepared. Hell, we can do it at 10 P.M. Eastern. Where the Hell do you have to be the next day, anyway?
Quote:Is that not good enough? Too bad, nobody else is suggesting anything.
Anyone, and everyone, interested in seeing successful raids regularly occur on both red and blue side should make it their responsibility to show up on time, be familiar with the tactics used, and do their best to bring interested friends along. I suspect these three things would go a very long way to bolstering the successes of red side raids.
Or...
If you know someone who goes to blue raids but not red ones, someone who doesn't read the forums, someone who thinks playing red side will make them "dirty"... encourage them to come with you, to try it out. Educate them about how Hami Raids work, and why. Then, show up, ready to listen and do your best. Who knows, with a bit of luck and little server lag, you just might win. -
Thank you for restating your point Mortal, I happen to agree with several of your observations. If I may, a good way to approach someone who feels, like you, the risk and time are just not worth the reward, might be to point out the feeling that comes from pulling off one of the toughest challenges ingame, or the sense of teamwork and community of participating in an event such as this.
I'm offering suggestions as to how to spark interest for raiding within our fellow players, not necessarily talking directly to Mortal. The raids are hard and that has an appeal all itself. You might bump into someone you haven't seen in ages or someone you've only met in the forums previously. Heck, I was on an LRSF run by Kidengineer when I met Vega, someone whom I had developed a good deal of respect for from conversations held in the forums. In short, some of the reasons or objections people give for not attending raids can be overcome with a little imagination and a positive attitude. -

Quote:Do you have a suggestion that might help address this issue?I've noticed that no one has mentioned the fact that some people (myself included) do not find Hami raids all that fun. Plus the fact that the risk vs reward really doesn't make it worth it as well.
(Assuming that BrokenPrey is correct, below, that you're observation was stated to draw Dev attention to the issue. And no, I'm not being sarcastic.)
Quote:Sure you can do a lot about it. If you don't like something in this game you can say you don't like it a post how a change might be good, and the Devs do listen to the player base. Look what they did with Posi TF and the last room in the Numina Task Force. They didn't change that stuff because they wanted to it was becuase the player base wanted it.
What he is talking about why it might be hard to get this done because some people don't like it. It has everything to do with the topic.
Quote:Yes and that is the point they are advertising and people are not showing up. Don't you see something wrong there?
Once again, it comes down to what can the community at large do to increase interest and participation in red side Hami raids? I addressed this question specifically here. -
Quote:This is an issue that would have to be addressed on a channel by channel basis, however, most of the channels mentioned in this thread are public and therefore do not require permission to invite as anyone can join them.Though I might not know the chaos this may cause, perhaps more people in their perpective chat channels could be allowed the option to invite new people. I know I have from time to time wanted to invite some new person into a chat channel, only to be blocked by not having that authority.
Just a thought. -
Though this post immediately follows Elric's, it is in no way a response or retort to his comments. I would never want that. =)
Speading the word among friends, SG mates, allies, and others is a great way to communicate what is happening around Protector, or any server for that matter. But, this is an entirely different thing from what some others have said, that the organizers and leaders of said events need to communicate more.
It is a subtle distinction, but an important one. The effort put forth by the leaders of events, specifically raids in this conversation, has been and remain adequate for the task. This is evidenced by the amount of response received for blue side raids.
Spreading the word to people who do not use the global channels previously discussed, or who do not use the forums is important. However, that responsibility should not fall on the shoulders of a few motivated individuals leading and/or organizing a raid for the benefit of all participants. Rather, anyone interested in seeing the raid succeed should make it their own responsibility to pass on what they have seen, read, and heard about on global channels, in the forums, and elsewhere.
It is painfully clear to me, I was not concise enough previously.
Anyone, and everyone, interested in seeing successful raids regularly occur on both red and blue side should make it their responsibility to show up on time, be familiar with the tactics used, and do their best to bring interested friends along. I suspect these three things would go a very long way to bolstering the successes of red side raids.
Sitting back and telling Kid, Vega, BT, Sooner, Vyx, Major T, and others they need to advertise in this or that global, post more often in the forums, or chat ingame more accomplishes nothing. The same people see JS, PV, PW, PTF (globals abbv. 'cause I'm too lazy to type out entire names) when they play blue side or red side, they show up for blue side but not red side - that is not the fault of insufficient advertising.
Six's briefing, well done.
Ben's training, outstanding!
Vir at his brother's side... crushing.
Top notch stuff here Sooner. -
Quote:This demonstates my point precisely. The difference between blue and red side activity is the players, not the advertising. If 50 people can roll out for blue side Hami fun, where are their corresponding red side characters? I'm not saying they must have villains, but if they do not, the difference is the players, not the message getting around. The "word" gets out about raids, both blue and red, people just don't respond to red side like they do for blue. By all means, if individuals feel compelled to 'talk up' the raids more, please do so, but issues like...With a smaller redside player base, equal effort means proportionately lower redside attendance. For example, I sometimes team with a particular group of players that regularly support the blueside with 4-6 people but have no villains 45+ or no villains at all.
-Population red side
-"Bad guy" stigma
-Lag, real or perceived
-Friendships and alliances
...will continue to hamper red side raiding efforts. I do not have a magic bullet answer, nor do I think anyone else has one in their pocket. When Going Rogue arrives, could Vigilantes help bolster red side activity, certainly, but only time will tell. Kinetic Melee and Electric Control could see a spike in Brute, Stalker, and Dominator numbers, all of which could bring added hope for future red side raiding. Looking further down the road, the arrival of the Incarnates will accompany a significant increase in the number of active Lvl 50s seen around town, this too could be a boon for the raiding effort. If nothing else, there is hope...
