And not everyone who signed the petition is Anti-NCSoft. Heck I signed it AND bought GW2. I also had a few coworkers sign it...who have never heard of NCSoft and probably never will play an MMO. Most of my global friends signed it...and they are currently playing GW2 in of the many guilds of CoH players over there.
Not everyone thinks NCSoft is evil for closing CoH. Some of us actually realize it was a simple business decision...that actually makes sense when you look at it from a non-emotional "OMG they are murdering our game" viewpoint.
Quote:This isn't a plumber, a local restaurant or a breakfast cereal, it's a form of entertainment. Look at the difference between professional critic and user reviews up on Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes. Often films that are panned professionally have high user reviews because movie goers tend to go see something that they have a predilection to like in the first place. Word of mouth only works if your target believes you have the same tastes they do.
Also people tend not to boycott conglomerates because of something one of their parts did. Would you boycott Pizza Hut or Taco Bell because of something KFC did? Or Longhorn Steakhouse because of something happened at Olive Garden or Red Lobster. People don't think that way.
Our argument is to stay away from a game publisher because of what they did to a game our target may not give a rat's behind about. If their friends like GW2, they will more likely listen to them than us. And with 2 million sales in the first month alone, that's likely a lot of positive voices versus our 20,000 diehard (based on the petition numbers) CoH supporters trying to warn them. -
And in my eyes everyone has a right to post their opinions and if people get offended by someone that is why the ignore option is there.
I get paid to listen to delusional people in the real world, but thankfully I don't have to "listen" to them on the interwebs if I don't want toI actually prefer the differing opinions here compared to some forums where it seems more like a co-dependent circle jerk.

Please... City of Heroes has/had plenty of scantily clad "women" walking around...most of whom were men in real life. Personally I loathe seeing half naked female avatars, but let's not pretend CoH couldn't pump out the h00ker looking female toons as well.
Quote:I only have a minor quibble with the statement I highlighted.
There is a difference between less armor and less clothing. I have many characters on CoH that are unarmored, but are fully clothed. Blade & Soul is not so much "less armor" as it is "less clothing" or, to put it more succinctly, "more bare skin".
Yes, I know. Its a technical quibble. But, I just wanted to point that out. -
Just one thing regarding your statement. I think MOST people can accept that CoH was profitable, BUT that profitability was small. CoH has never been a profit making powerhouse and frankly no matter what was done to it could make it one. So NCSoft looked at the slowly declining revenue and made a decision...cut it before it starts losing money. You state most financial analyses claim the game was viable - but those analyses are based off LIMITED knowledge of the financials of CoH. NCSoft knows what the expenses are for Paragon, knows what the revenue is for the game, and their analysis is what matters; not some person on a forum speculating.
It was/is a business decision...one which NO ONE on these boards can understand because they are not in NCSoft's position of knowing everything that went into that decision. People are ASSUMING so many reasons why they chose to sunset CoH...but many fail to stop and detach themselves a little and see it was just business and nothing personal.
Quote:Morality does have something to do with it. Albeit nowhere near the level of animal abuse, slavery or genocide, but then only the most overwrought on either side would claim otherwise. Morality is not a binary choice between everything's hunky-dory and GENOCIDE!, that's just silly. Someone deciding to steal a candy bar or pet a kitten is making a moral choice, just not a very significant one.
Now, it seems odd that NCsoft didn't cite CoH's lack of profitability as their reason for shutting it down since they've done so for other titles. All the more so considering the abruptness with which it was done, going from full-bore development on at least two titles to "as of today you're all laid off" in one day, and that most financial analyses suggest that the game was viable, if not exactly a profit blockbuster. There are older MMOs still going with smaller player bases. i still think it was most likely more a case of making an example of CoH as a dramatic show of NCsoft's commitment to their new direction.
Still, what's done is done at this point. City of Heroes will be shut down fairly soon and will most likely never come back as the game we currently know. While i find the [anti-CoH/CoH deserved this] posters' need to constantly belittle and heap scorn on the CoH fans who aren't happy about losing a game they love a bit bemusing i'm reluctant to see it as anything more than a combination of sour grapes and schadenfreude. -

Some people act like NCSoft is LITERALLY burning their houses. It is a business decision regarding an online GAME.

Makes me wonder if he ever came back and if so who he was
-
Makes me wonder what CoH raised last year for Extra Life 4 Kids.
I had never heard about it until this year. I think CoH ended up being ranked 20/2000+ team wise. There were some amazing teams and individuals out there playing for Extra Life 4 Kids...I was just glad to do the small part that I did. -

Yeah I agree - I loathe it when the females pictured on game sites are basically boobs with a few shreds of clothes. The majority of the pics of female characters look like their "class" is H00ker. Aside from that I watched the videos and CoS looks like a lot of time and effort has went into it. Unfortunately it doesn't look like a game I would enjoy and I doubt I will be playing it when it does go live.
Quote:Colour me interested, at the least. Although I did have a colossal facepalm as soon as I browsed the site and saw the female character designs under Races. Even the Goblins, for crying out loud! And, of course, the 'Not Elves honest!' were the worst for it. Utterly stupid skimpy costume design, that is. Give the males some sensible, but as soon as it's female, wuh-oh! Fanservice ahoy!
I think the Girl Genius, for one, would be braining people with a very large wrench before dressing in anything as shoddy as that. Eesh. -
The whole thing smells VERY fishy to me the more I think about it. Some people have said WAY WAY worse on these forums and yet they are not banned...where NCSoft can easily link the forum user to the game account....yet they take a chance on banning the wrong person with a FB account?? I think what is more likely is that the banned person did something else; like the credit card charge back for example, and is using this as trying to say NCSoft banned for their words instead of their fraudulent claim to their CC company.
I TRULY hope no one in the SaveCoH camp or otherwise decides to run with this as a "story" based off of ONE person's word. Talk about egg in the face if they do and it ends up he was banned for some completely different reason.... Call me a skeptic but some people way too eager to accept this guy's word when this type of thing has never happened to anyone else....
Quote:I run the Boycott NCSoft Facebook group and have been very vocal in my efforts. I've not been banned in game. I've gotten Facebook bans, but nothing in game. I'd take the rumor with a full shaker of salt.

Ahh so you have played the GW2 event then? I mean since you disagree I am assuming that's because you have actual experience on GW2 and in their event? Otherwise you just come across as someone spouting off because they don't like NCSoft. I tend to find opinions based on actual experience a tad more reliable than one's based off pure speculation and bias.
Nothing wrong with them telling people about the event and trying to get more people to play GW2. You do know there is a THRIVING CoH community in GW2 as well right? There are several guilds over there of CoH players...inviting people to go to GW2 and play with fellow fans of CoH is not a bad thing...as it strengthens and maintains something people are supposedly fighting for...community.
Quote:What the thread title says is that GW2 is better than CoH Halloween. Then, the post goes on to invite CoH players to join the OP in GW2.
So I disagreed their event is better and then suggested the OP go to the GW2 forums if he's looking for people to join him celebrating GW2's greatness.
Then I said go ahead and play GW2. Have fun. But don't get all pissy if people here who enjoy CoH and dislike NCSoft and their remaining products tell you to **** off. -

Careful there with the logic or you will be the next one labeled unicorn/antisocial personality/unsympathetic/fool/a$$/etc etc etc.
As far as GW2 goes...meh. CoH pretty much spoiled me as my first MMO and try as I might I just cannot get into other MMOs; even the other "super hero" ones. Has nothing to do with the publisher but rather the fact I am not an MMOer...I was a CoHer.
My time in game is done except for a gathering of friends planned on 11/30. Unfortunately ALL my in game friends I have had for years have moved on; mainly to GW2 and a few to CO. Neither game excites me enough to play even though my friends are there - we use skype etc to keep in touch.
Quote:And yet the point stands. If you see a post with GW2 in the title, don't click on it. It's no one's fault but your own if you read a topic that irritates or upsets you when the title is so blatant.
To use the funeral analogy, if I've just buried a loved one, I'm not going to open emails about fun vacation spots the next day. I won't begrudge friends sending them to me, but I simply wouldn't click on them.
As many people have already pointed out, time is short for the game and these boards. Which would you rather be spending your remaining time doing; reading posts that make you happy and playing the game you loved, or trying to police other people's posts that just irritate you and waste what little time you have left on negativity? Is that really what you want your last memories of the City of boards to be? Arguing with someone about what they should and shouldn't post?
Me, I wouldn't waste my time. I'd read what I liked and ignore the rest. -
Hmmm I would think the ones suggested would probably be the best bet: Nerva, Perez, and actually Croatoa was the first to come to mind for me.
-
If you tweet or post #SaveCoH on ANY website NCSoft will ban your account. Seriously! A friend of mine had that happen to them!
CoH places malaware on your computer and a keylogger as well... a friend of mine who works in IT told me about that! You can disable this though if you are in the game and push Alt+F4.
(BTW Alt F4 is the name of my SG)
Quote:I heard from a friend, that knows a guy, who has a sister that dates a guy who knows a girl, that works with a friend who overheard a conversation between two guys, and one said that said his wife's mother spoke with a colleague who may or may not work in an industry that is remotely connected to someone that works for a subsidiary of NCSoft that read an internal corporate email that supposedly, but can't be confirmed, mentions that everyones accounts at CoH will be banned on Nov 30th.
Swear to god. -
And? So because they are hurt by NCSoft the rest of the forums shouldn't discuss other NCSoft games? Here's an idea...if you don't want to discuss NCSoft titles aside from CoH; maybe you shouldn't read a thread that has a NCSoft game title in it? Take personal responsibility and avoid them...instead of telling other people to not discuss them...just an idea
I have GW2 but didn't like it; which isn't saying much because I didn't like DCUO, CO, SWTOR, or STO. So as of now I am not playing any MMOs. I do have friends who left CoH for GW2 and are loving the Halloween event. I always liked ToTing in CoH; usually hung out with a few friends and did it. Maybe I will jump on GW2 sometime this weekend and see what it's all about.

Well at least they did post it as a rumor in the thread title and didn't attempt to claim it as a fact.

I never said Plan Z would result in any legal action. The people involved in Plan Z are being very careful to not infringe on any CoH IP to avoid such things. Plan Z and the emulation project are two distinctly different things. Plan Z is a group of person's working together to create a new game; completely avoiding the CoH IP but making it as much like CoH to feel comfortable to players. The emulation project is a reverse engineering project to make CoH as it is playable on a independent server. Some people have openly; and some not so openly, admitted to working on BOTH projects. Titan has stated they do not SUPPORT the emulation project, BUT allowing those involved in it to also be a part of Plan Z is not actually condemning the emulation activities either.
What I said was: It is a huge risk allowing people who are working on the emulator to be involved in Plan Z as well. While not ENCOURAGING an emulator...having those people involved in Plan Z is a bad idea. It's not IF NCSoft can win a lawsuit against an emulator project, but rather...can the people involved in it...afford a lawsuit. NCSoft doesn't have to win...to win by draining those involved financially defending their emulator. A lawsuit against those working on emulation who are affiliated with Plan Z could easily derail Plan Z. So my question was: Is it worth the risk...allowing people who are knowingly working on an emulator to also be contributors to Plan Z?
Quote:If Plan Z is what I understand (an all new game that just happens to take heavy inspiration from CoH) the risk for lawsuits (that actually make it to court) are zero (unless they go stupid and rip assets from CoH to use in their project.)
Mind you, without game development experience, the chances of it ever being finished or being completed within a 4 year window are also near zero, not entirely zero. I would not discourage them from attempting it if thats what they want to spend their time doing. -
Yeah I was thinking that as well. I am doubtful it had anything to do with any posts on the Facebook page. I mean...how exactly would NCSoft know someone's game Username from their Facebook page? Seems a bit risky for NCSoft assuming John Doe who posts on facebook is the exact same John Doe who has a CoH account. I call shenanigans.

Great job... I REALLY liked it. I closed my eyes while listening and was imagining some of the zones ...and in my head it felt cinematic
-
Not that I believe it, but it is a reminder that these forums ARE NCsoft's forums. They could if they wanted to simply nuke the forums if things got too Anti-NCSoft for their liking...which makes sense.

Quote:well, i am surprised that this is happened. We were allowed by the mods to talk about other games on these forums.
If you don't like the thread, report it and go on your merry way. There is nothing *forcing* you to reply to each thread. We are allowed to post about it.
How about this for an idea.
Go into the secret world forum thread, and tell those guys to get out of these forums.

My Titan ID is Burnt Toast. If Titan chooses to ban me or what have you for speaking my opinion on THESE boards...so be it.
I don't consider myself a NCSoft fangirl, but I am a realist and am thankful to them for the 7+ years I got to play their product. IF I ever decided to play another MMO because it looked interesting to me, and it was made by NCSoft...I would buy it without hesitation.
The ONLY fault I have with NCSoft over the closing of CoH was the way the devs were dismissed. I am glad they got decent severance packages and I know; because of their immense talent, they will find work very soon. Any studio would be lucky to pick up any of the devs who worked on CoH.
Quote:With any luck Titan network will discover your identity over there and ban you. You have repeately stated that you are hostile to both a server emulator AND find the idea of Plan Z lol-tastic, therefore why should you be privy to any information dealing with either issue?
Not to mention your continued fangirling over NCSoft. You're a hostile entity and have no business over there. If I ran that site you'd be off it in the beat of a kitty- cat heart - which is of course at least twice as fast as a human heartbeat.
