This little tidbit is factual, and I dare you to prove it wrong.
Short sighted, take for example the housing bubble (wow it was great), a huge boom of everyone simplisticly thinking that housing prices 'never' go down, add a bunch of opportunistic lenders, and then add a bunch of opportunistic investors, and you get a 70 trillion dollar bubble that still has to reset.

Blah blah, the point being, that the short term thinking, that some new players in AE getting to lvl 50 in days 'probably' won't stick around, they have no long term interest, meaning they havn't spent any real time in game to achieve anything so why bother, they already 'won the game'.

A short term bubble of new players means nothing, the long term outlook is for players that stick around.

I have never advocated getting rid of AE, that being said this is a watershed pandora's box for this MMO.

the points? you mean your opinions? Why do we need to explain away someones opinion?

BINGO! It's opinion vs. opinion. The only fact that I can present is the amount of Atlas broadcast and new subs I've seen. Everyone can see the increase in Atlas broadcast, and everyone can see the increase in "annoying noobs" as the anti farmers call them. Personally, I call them Co*'s future.

Bring something that is factual to the table instead of opinion. Until then, I doubt you will ever change anyones mind. The funny thing is, no matter how many facts the farmers bring to the table, it doesn't change the anti-farmers mind, but it does change the minds of people who don't care either way. This is why the hardcore anti-farmers are hated on these boards.
When the nerfs come then you will know who was right.

Their pattern and timing of responses doesn't support that idea no, not in the least, it has repeatedly taken them weeks to fix HUGE exploits and to finally post public expectations, and to punish exploiters.

No the devs attention to the released AE has been absolutely unarguably dismal.

Failure or refusal to recognize any of the above is the very definition of myopic. Alt has refused or failed to recognize at least two, probably three, and quite possibly all four.
Alt clearly is very passionate about the game and wants to see everyone enjoying it for as long as possible.

I don't know why anyone is arguing with him, his points are simple, they are valid, they make sense.

    Quote:
All I'm saying is: if you think there's a problem, find a solution that doesn't take MA away from everyone. I'm not abusing the system, and neither is anyone I interact with. I'm not exploiting the system, and neither is anyone I interact with. If you want to push for a solution that accommodates your playstyle and preferences, please come up with one that doesn't shaft ours in the process.
I'm suggesting that they released a significantly imperfect addition to the game, on top of that their happy happy idea that no one would abuse the addition was a serious mistake, on top of that, the completely lackluster enforcement of their own rules ergo 1 week or more to fix HUGE exploits like Comm officers and Mitos', thats egregious in the extreme, a person could have created 2 lvl 50's per day, so in the extreme 14 lvl 50 characters, THEN! they take a week or more to punish people for using what they have created is so ridiculous as to defy imagination!

Originally I was of the opinion that everyone needed to police themselves (still am, but!), but in that case its incumbent upon the devs to provide a reasonable 'backstop' to the whole process, and they have failed miserably for the above reasons.

I think the MA could be an amazing addition to the game, I have found a few fantastically fun missions amongst the hundreds of thousands of currently published farms.

Do I have a fix? No, but then I didn't open the box did I.

That being said, I have made 1 suggestion ever about 'fixing' MA its in this thread:
    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=139198

    I said:
'Or maybe an inverse logarithmic sliding scale, lvl 1's get 0 XP and go up to something close to full XP as you approach lvl 50.

Tied to real level of course not any SK/LK. '

    Quote:
That would be taking the "big picture" into account.
The big picture is the long term longevity of the game, and as I said, trivialization of the whole thing is significantly detrimental to the same. I think the players have a large part to play in that but at this point its significantly overshadowed by the incredibly poor dev support for their new creation.
  4. I have been installing Microsofts AV:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

For me its the path of least resistance to have a line item "I have Antivirus" checkbox. I am no longer of the opinion that desktop AV is providing any significant protection, people need to change their internet habits and use other types of protections. For about a year, maybe 2, I have seen every major and minor AV product completely bypassed by todays 0day polymorphic infectors and rootkits.

You can still get the current beta at Softpedia, but I expect MS will release it pretty soon now.

I dont' use it myself, I have my AV and spam protection on my Router with no desktop AV except for an 'install' of Clam AV portable to scan files when I feel like it.
  5. The_Alt_oholic, is bang on the point.

Most PL'rs and Farmers are too short sighted, they can't see the forest for the trees. Its a self destructing pattern of short term thinking and greed.
(yes there are exceptions and caveats, but the overarching concept is true)

The truth, as Alt and others have tried to explain, is that the trivialization of the game is dangerous long term.

Maybe the devs want to push the subscribers to more of a churn rate subscription type where people play for a month or 2 and move on, away from the previous type where people generally subscribed longer term, if so they should let us know asap.

But I doubt it, its more likely they are busy elsewhere and maybe they are even clueless about the damage this thing is causing. It could even be they are trying to figure out how to close pandoras box, but I doubt that as well.

Whatever it is, pretending that you and others are somehow 'explaining' away the points that Alt and others have made isn't working.
All 'you' have done is present another opinion, and in my opinion they have been generally myopic.

Maybe some of the points have value or are even correct in a vacuum, but against the bigger picture they don't carry much weight.

That sounds like a memory leak.

But 900MB-1.2GB of use doesn't, that is still in the normal range.

Perhaps someone will come in later and say they have seen theirs use 1.5GB recently and we'll be on to something.
  7. Could be a memory leak the last one would crash the client after using up about 1.9GB but that was a long time ago.

1.2GB is the normal amount of memory use for me lately after an hour or 2 of playing, it generally doesn't go above that amount, so 900MB isn't much really.

It will climb up from about 600MB right away to 1.2GB over time, every zone, every player that comes within a certain range, every new scenery, every new creature, the market, chat text, etc etc all constantly use up more memory on purpose to improve performance.

I doubt its a memory leak, I have played for 4 hours or more without problems, chances are you have changed something and forgot to mention it, either a new video card or you changed some in game settings.

Get more memory if its bothering you now, 2GB minimum.

Need more information, which file, what is the message.

There is one instance where the updater won't replace itself so you need to manually rename 2 files.

Otherwise, exclude the game folder from your realtime antivirus, that could be the problem.

No, unless you have a friend that can send it to you.
  9. I think it was a 'quick fix' because people were getting 10000+ on a single mission.

I don't think it has had much effect on hardcore ticket gatherers but it probably has slowed down the average player.

Basically with any model of 4800 you can set everything to maximum.

The 'lowest' end 4830 is as fast as an Nvidia 9800GT 8800GTS etc.

If you want to use Antialiasing or Anisotropic Filtering modes then you need to disable Bloom/DOF/Desaturation and set Water to Low.

Thats about it in a nutshell, but Billz has done some extra good work with the settings here:

The only exceptions I can think of would be easy to delimit cases involving placate or something similar, and that shouldn't affect the basic line of sight check anyway.

It requires ONE extra geometry check per attack. If there's a geometry bug, fix it NOW, not later.
Its hardly that trivial, a change like that could have many more factors or layers. I have heard of other 'simple' fixes like that being unworkable because of server load already.

All that being said, I think its fixed, I haven't had to reset a mission in a long long time now due to a stuck creature, ALL of them have popped out in a minute or less.

Yes, but no one was confused about that. However the most a server side 'script' can to is prompt the user for an action.

Yes, this is why I said that NoScript would most likely have protected you from this problem unless you actually clicked on something, even then it has some cross site protections as well.

    Quote:
Right - I've found a report from the Exploit Prevention Labs that describes this in detail. However, I'm fairly sure I didn't click on the page at all, so they may have changed it to an OnLoad event...

    Which is described as follows:

the effect that a click that slightly *misses* a control or link on the page, ends up going to the exploit site.
So a click or if its an onload it becomes a script.

I'm not claiming NoScript is the 2nd coming but it does put a lot of control into the users hands, i'm not entirely sure why you or anyone is resistant to this.

Since I haven't seen any reports from the OP's system, I have no clue whether everything is current.
Thats fine, I still claim with the information at hand, JPG and PHP, the highest probability is user error, and the 2nd is something that NoScript could have helped with unless the first overrode that as well.

To debate further is useless unless the OP decides to give us more information.

    I read daily about vulnerabilities:

    http://isc.sans.org/diary.html
    http://secunia.com/advisories/

There is no current JPG vulnerability.

    NoScript handles the script/flash/java.

I'm still puzzled by the description the OP gave.

It still doesn't make sense, someone had to click on something, the most PHP can do is send a prompt for a download or upload, it can't do it automatically or arbitrarily.

    But whatever..

We still need to see a Hijackthis to give a good opinion.

  18. I'm pretty sure I slotted a complete Dark Watchers set in mine and got 90+ rech and 90+ debuff, but i'll have to go look to be sure.
  19. Wild guess, you are on Comcast? Doesn't matter.

Anyways the usual fix for that problem is to change the updater ports:

    http://help.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/ncsof...p?p_faqid=4805
  20. 100% CPU is normal for a single core of your speed so don't waste any time on that angle.

    You have enough system memory.

Its more likely that your sound looping and crashing has to do with your video card, I would test by lowering your resolution and running on the lowest settings and see if that helps then increase resolution to your desired level and follow by increasing settings.

On that video card I wouldn't run anything on high and keep the particle count very low, detail at 100 or less etc.

Its a starting point, you can also post your Hijackthis and Dxdiag so we can have a look and see if there is anything special hiding on your system.

  23. There are a few date related problems with the game, the one that may be getting you is if your game folders or data folders for the game are future dated (depending on your version of Windows).

So I would recommend doublechecking your current date/time yet again, then check and change the game folders to an older date if they are future dated.

There are some tools online to change the date of a folder:
    http://www.petges.lu/download/ac.exe
    from
    http://www.petges.lu/windows/windows.html

I have not tested the program but it looks to be what you could need.
