I've never outright deleted a level 50 character. The worst I've done with them is to strip out their enhancements and exile them to seldom visited servers. This was the fate of my fire/energy melee tanker, who was rolled during i5.
The character got sent to Champion, which meant that I could participate more often in original tanker Tuesdays, though I haven't been able to for a couple months. I've even gotten some set bonuses back on her. But the combo of fire and energy melee were made mostly for aesthetic reasons, and there is now negative synergy between the two sets: Fire depends on a self heal for toughness, while Energy Melee was "rebalanced" by duplicating the effects of lag, which puts your self heal out of reach for seconds at a time.
There are other deadwood characters that I haven't gotten around to yet. My stone tanker, another child of i5, is still on my main server Victory. I haven't tried unlocking alpha on her yet, don't want to beg for a controller to solo Trapdoor for me. I have not seriously played the character, really, not since i9 hit. The slowness of Stone doesn't bother me; the inability to jump and the fiddliness of Teleport are the issues.
I'm reluctant to pull the plug on characters. They go through cycles of interest. I almost sent away my ill/emp controller, but I now keep that one around as very useful to run friends through the incarnate arc. When I respecced her I took the whole primary, cut out a lot of the empathy stuff, and took pool power attacks for more offense.
There are characters that I thought had brighter futures than they had, like my unkillable dark/reflex scrapper: unkillable solo, mostly dead weight on teams. My spines/WP scrapper brings a lot more to the table in team content, and I went with a debuff based build strategy that works surprisingly well despite not having defense bonuses. Who knows but that my granite tank might be next for a revival. (I made a new Fire tanker, Fire/DB, which means I don't need to bring back my old one.)
