Quote:Okay, look at it from the devs' point of view. If Hail of Bullets is indeed underperforming, why would they give +defense to it (which doesn't match up with any other blast set or how it works currently, something that they are unwilling to change much)? Why not just cut down the animation time, lower the recharge, or reduce the animation, etc.?I'd like to see a decent amount of defense added only to Hail of Bullets, and only while the animation was playing. That would make it a lot more usable without unbalancing the set as a whole. Adding defense in general would be a bad idea since blast sets aren't supposed to have mitigation other than enemy-affecting things like knockback or stuns / holds from control powers. I could see making a special case for a four second defense boost during HoB since it is so much worse than every other nuke, but adding defense in general would be asking for trouble (and future nerfs).
If you want to argue that it does not do enough on its own, go for it. But then state how to improve it by the numbers (again, damage done, KB chance, chance for random damage, recharge, etc.). Work with how sets are already set up and work, rather than throwing a dart at the wheel of "random buff that might work thematically."
I can wish all I want for Full Auto to make mobs cower in fear from the sheer amount of bullets being fired at them (even though that could make sense "thematically), but that doesn't mean it's going to be listened to, or adopted, by the devs. When Full Auto was buffed recently, it had its animation time reduced, for instance.
I can see the most traction happening from damage, recharge, or the extreme range of damage that it can do, personally. The animation is longish, but around what most of the nukes are. For balance, it just needs to be on par with what all those nukes can do (which is where the real debate comes in). -
Spring Break next week, so I may try to tag along if possible (and if I remember). My VEAT won't mind exemping down, I am sure.

Quote:That's about all I would want added to the animations. The set is plenty visceral already: much of it coming from the effects you cause on mobs. Nothing like sending four guys flying with a Buckshot round (even better with the huge mobs we have in-game), and M80 is quite satisfying with how it sends enemies flying.Firing off the a tracer round every now and then would look pretty cool.
The sheer bullet spray of Full-Auto is awesome as well. *breaks out his Picard shooting a Tommy Gun face* About the only thing that could help any of those is a tracer round or two. Wonder how hard that would be to do now that BAB did the work with Dual Pistols?
Probably a lot, but I am curious. -
The other side of this is that, well, Dual Pistols is a blast set... those sets can affect mobs, but they don't give the user defense.
Getting defense is a great idea on a Blaster, but you're not going to get it from a blast set. That would be a significant change to how blast sets work, and I can't see the devs doing it (or thinking it necessary).
As people have said, if there are adjustments really needed for the set, they'll make them: but it will be to animation times, or damage, recharge, etc. -
Name of the game for a blaster is to hit hard and fast. Also, try to open with your KO powers to get mobs knocked on their back, so they're firing back at you less while you are dropping them. Then, try to set up a good chain to drop mobs as fast as you can. EM will give you some hard-hitting melee powers to throw in there when you want a really quick kill on a mob that's in your face (or you can push them back).
So, do fast and heavy damage, but fight when you are ready (e.g., if build up is about to recharge, wait a few seconds and your next fight will be much easier). Also know what your mitigation powers are and use them. Dual Pistols while solo may be best with Lethal Ammo to get KB on mobs, for instance. Use Suppressive Fire to take a lieutenant out of the equation. You can focus on the minions without the lt hitting you hard, and then you can take them out at your leisure once the minions are down.
For KB, I either slot a KB power with the KB IO set that gives you KB resist for the fourth bonus (Kinetic Crash is the set) or grab a -KB IO. You can get Acrobatics instead, but it's a power pick, somewhat high end cost to keep running, and most of the -kb recipes aren't too bad in price now (Karmas and Steadfasts). You do want to do something about kb, and any of those can work, depending on your build and money situation.
I would also recommend going for defense from an IO build on your Blasters (I usually start slotting level 30-35 recipes on my Blasters when they get to that range). It does cost more than regular SOs or IOs, but even getting your defense to about 20% to range or smash/lethal can make a noticeable difference in how long you can last in a fight. 30%-35% is even better, and good enough for most of my blasters with their other mitigation powers thrown in.
Probably good enough for now. Have fun with your Blaster: when played and built right, they can be great solo and on teams. -
Pfffft, what need have you for an attack chain? Get some decent recharge and just mash the best attack you have up for the situation you are in that moment. Duh.

Hmmmmm, that's funny (as in weird). We do have our grumpy types, and some odd personalities, but our forums are actually quite good... pretty much every other MMO forum I have seen or participated in has stunk five ways from Sunday.
A recent review of older MMO's (forget which site it was) reviewed COH, and our population and forums were cited as one of the big pluses of the game. So yeah, weird.
I'm guessing those people must have had some bad encounters with some grumpy types, or something. Or they ran into Satanic Hamster. That would do it.
Heck, people compete to give the fastest answer on Player Questions, so that's a plus, too. There are some *facepalm* moments when repeat questions are given, but you're going to get that on any forums (I swear I want to kick each and every person that asks why Dual Pistols is not a Scrapper set).
As for whether you're new, I guess you're an old player, new poster? I think I signed up for the forums not long after getting the game, but I didn't really start posting much until a couple of years ago, so that's certainly not odd.
Anyway, good to see a new face. -
Another problem with slotting up the effects in DP is the slot drain. Kheldians are tougher to plan for as they have so many powers that can take slots. Adding such a feature to the effects of Swap Ammo would probably not be worth it in the end, and make things more confusing rather than helpful.
And sheesh, you can also disagree without resorting to namecalling.
I'd also say there is nothing wrong with DP that couldn't be fixed by people reworking some of their expectations and some numbers in the set being reworked as well. -
I was a little torn about what to run with for DP, actually. I like being able to take bosses out of the equation with my Blasters, so EM and Elec seemed pretty good. I'm thinking I am going to run with lethal ammo while solo, though (added mitigation from KB), so I think EM is the way to go so I can stun bosses while solo. When there isn't a boss, I'll still put some hold duration into Supression Fire so I can still use other types of ammo. I also figure boost range and the other melee attacks are useful too (they are on my AR/EM).

Quote:Wait, so you never said Dual Blades is underpowered, but it was an anecdote that "most people have trouble having being intensely underpowered?" I think you can see why it sounds like you said Dual Blades is underpowered, as you pretty much said it again. For your specific case, I don't know if Energy Aura hit you harder in some respect, as DB isn't any more end heavy than other sets (it has lighter powers for the most part, but most of them animate faster than other sets, so it adds up to about the same thing).@Grey Pilgrim: Actually I never said Dual Blades is underpowered. What I said is that it's an endurance chewer, it's much worse at low levels than other sets, and it works very poorly with Energy Armor. It was an anecdote to state that, even if you love the concept, most people have trouble having fun being intensely underpowered, especially when they've seen first hand what other combinations are capable of.
I'd still say that HoB should just have a less extreme damage range, as it isn't consistent in what it does (and maybe a faster recharge). From posts on actual performance and what I have seen in game, it's a Nuke that needs another power to finish off most of a mob (RoA and Full Auto usually need another attack to even finish off minions... I usually follow up with Explosive Arrow and lead with M80 for those sets because of this). Solo, I'm thinking either leading in for HoB with Dual Wield or Bullet Rain would be a good idea, just to start knocking mobs back, then fire off HoB right away. That would help a bit.
But still, I'm not sure how using HoB is going to kill you any faster than using your other attacks... just set it up to use it right. I rather wonder if people have not yet figured out a solid strategy for using it well, actually. There was a video in open beta of a DP/Fire clearing Cimerora's walls, and they got in close with Hot Feet and fired off HoB while the mobs were running away slowly. That's another tactic that could work while solo beside what I noted up above.
When you're on a team, well, it's pretty much the same idea as any other PbAOE for those tactics.
For Dual Pistols builds with IO sets, I'd probably go for Smash/Melee defense, since you'll probably closer to mobs. I'd also say it's worth grabbing Hurdle and Combat Jumping, so you can get in close and leap out easily. -
Got my Peacebringer from 47 to 49 on that Posi run, and my Plant/Thorn Dom from 2-14... plus a little cash on GP and one of my other 50s.
2XP weekend seemed to be pretty active, so that was good. And there seemed to be a lot more of people just having fun. Saw a lot of comments on teams and channels where people said "oh, yeah... it's 2XP, isn't it?" -
Okay, I can tell someone has a hard time seeing set balance if they're saying Dual Blades is a weak set. Man, I just covered Dual Blades in the Tanker section, too. Here goes yet another post on the subject.
Dual Blades is an AOE monster for a melee set. Brutes are able to tap into this AOE capability even faster than other Tankers are, too, so there is no defense in saying it's weak for Brutes. You can not like the look of the set, sure, but by the numbers, it IS solid. You have to focus on ST damage at first, and it does blossom a lot more the further you go in the set.
From past postings on the subject, I think people forget how much DB's numbers add up. For one attack, the damage is often parceled out in 2-5 hits, rather than one bigger orange number. The overall effect is on par with other melee sets, and better for some when it comes to AOE.
So no more hyperbole about Dual Pistols as well, please. It is not trash, it is not completely ran over by other blast sets.
Could it use some tweaking? Yes. So no making me out as a blind fanboi of the set, either. I have plenty of posts in the open beta arguing for an animation to Executioner's Shot (I'd argue for Dual Wield as well), and a balancing of Hail of Bullets. HoB shouldn't have such an extreme range of damage to it and should work a little better.
However, its being a PbAOE is not that big of a deal... if you can't handle getting in melee range to use it, then you're just lumping the set along with ones that also have PbAOE nukes. The devs can't please everyone with a set's design, and that should not be an expectation. -
Quote:Maybe I would care if said DP Blasters did not run off on their own to die! Many DP Blasters died to finish that TF, GP. Maybe you should think about that the next time you think about the random DP Blasters on your team!
Heh, seriously, I think the only deaths we had were when a few ran off from the rest of their group. I think we had our first three when three of us went to lead a hostage out of the mission, and you other three continued on your own.
Anyway, it was a good run. I'm not sure why some people are being all down on DP's capabilities. The numbers are in line with other sets (even if some animations are long, etc.), and it's done great in the teams I've been on. We were mowing through guys in short order yesterday, and that was at low levels. -
Quote:More of an addition. I was discussing when it lands a hit. It's still kind of annoying that an attacked mob (and his friends) can react to you while you are still animating the attack that alerts them to your presence. Same thing with misses on a snipe, etc.Correction; if you're hidden, and you miss with an AS, nobody notices.
For Executioner's Shot, it was discussed to death on the open beta forums. It's on par with Shout, but about a half second longer than most other similar attacks (Blaze is an outlier at 1 second, but you're not going to get DP on par with Fire anyway for balance reasons). If they could trim a half second off, I'd be a happy camper there, but it's still not that bad... and it does damage on par with those other short range, heavy blasts.
I'm still a little surprised that a few little rough things about DP were not fixed after the open beta, but they may be waiting a bit to see how it goes with the greater game-playing populace. I'm sure they'd rather release it a little weak and then buff it, rather than have it be overpowered and trim it back. -
Quote:Hmmmm, well, they will react if you miss, unfortunately. If you do hit them, however, they shouldn't react. There are some annoying situations with this throughout the game, for instance. As a Stalker, mobs can react to your Assassin's Strike (or another attack) before it is done animating... I think this happens with regular attacks out of Hide as well. Attacking out of Hide has enough benefits to be okay even with this, but it's still annoying. Same for any blast power you use.By the way, is it a bug that enemies react to Piercing Shot before you actually fire? I could swear I've seen them react and attack me the moment the animation starts, well before the bullet is fired.
As for Dual Pistols in general, I'm not sure why there is so much beef with its performance. I would have liked to see Executioner's Shot have its animation reduced, and the extreme range of damage in Hail of Bullets be evened out, but it is otherwise a decent set by the numbers (performance, too, from what I've seen in game).
New sets do not need to be on top of the others in the same category, just on par. I don't see a whole lot about Dual Pistols that suggests it's not on par with the other sets. Just different, which is good. I don't want another fire set, or assault rifle. I want a new and fun set, and that is what we got.
*added*
Mutant, thanks for addressing that idea about Defiance. I responded to it in the General Feedback to DP in the open beta forum as well, as that was just... bad. "New" defiance is good and one of the better inherents in the game. No touchy! -
Quote:If BAB saw this post, he'd facepalm and blow up the internet. Your examples all took a large amount of work, not a week from one employee. When they designed this engine they said that they couldn't change weapon design.
They were able to.
When they designed the engine they said that they couldn't change the color of powers.
They were able to.
I'm asking them to do things they have already done. Not the supposed impossible -- the Dev's have a history of telling us they can't do stuff or its too hard, then they do go and do it.
Applying what they have done before and saying none of what I'm asking for has to be re thought threw.
Now if you think other things are higher priority. Maybe I'd agree with that. I'd personally like a staff fighting set much more than crossbows, but that really is new animations and balancing.
But, I think it would be less than a week of work for one employee. And I'd like to see a lot of little things like this thrown in.
They were working on powerset customization for over a year before we saw it, and that was not just BAB working, either. And they're not even done with it: people want it for pool powers and epics, too: those are on the maybe list, as far as I know.
Crossbows would certainly be a nice option, and maybe they'll add them in at some point (though they'd all have to be mechanical... superheroes don't want to have to stop and wind their crossbow for 30 secs to a minute between shots). But do NOT think that this is a little thing you are asking, or that it would take time from a lot of other things people would like in game.
The devs are constantly having to balance out what we want vs what they can do, and they will never, ever have enough time to do everything that we want. -
Good run last night. Heraclea was already trying to get a Posi going, so MG and I joined the crew that was already gathered. We ran it with 6, and that was pretty smooth, actually. I was on my Peacebringer, Hera on a Storm/DP Defender, and the rest were some DP Blasters.
Damage seems to be the answer on the Posi, at least right now. The only deaths that occurred were when people ran off on their own, and I was in Nova form more than I was in Dwarf, actually. I was expecting it to be the other way around, but all the damage and kb really helped.
Hera's Hurricane and Gale helped out quite a bit as well. Only complaint, as usual, is all the defeat alls and length.
For those of you waiting on the Collector's Edition like me, Mid's has been updated to include Dual Pistols: so you can dream there while you wait. -
I'd slot it up more if I could, but other powers were more important, unfortunately. I did have a few more slots for it on my offensive build for Grey Pilgrim, so I only did it on the defensive build because I had to. No matter what, Tanks are going to find plenty of times where they'll use that Tier 1 power, so it's worth slotting it and using it if you can.
-
Quote:That's the feeling for a lot of Tier 1 attacks for Tankers. They're usually going to be used and useful fairly often, though. I don't slot up Scorch too heavily on my Fire/Fire, for instance, but I still use it plenty, especially when I exemp down.I'm not complaining whole sale about the performance so much as the fact I have to take Nimble Slice at tier 1. I don't really want the power and I don't need it for a combo I want. And it blows that it is so tight.
I would argue that you should reconsider Weaken a bit. That is actually a useful combo for when you get in over your head, and also makes it easier for a big chunk of foes to hit. Depending on your team, doing that may be more useful than Attack Vitals or Sweep, actually. -
Still planning on starting out at 7 PM Central (that's 8 PM Eastern, 6 PM Mountain, 5 PM Pacific for those that can't convert). Still time to get in on this... I'd like to have more people lined up at the start so we don't have to wait to form a team for long, if possible. So shout out while you still can!

That's what I've been telling you (among others). Dual Blades is a great set for AOE, and its ST damage isn't bad, either. It's just spread out over a lot of orange numbers. The end result is still a lot of lieutenants and minions falling fairly quickly. Bosses do take longer, of course, but that's the way it goes. Roll with that, or elect to not have bosses and more foes to take on. That's the great thing with SSK, you can set things up how you want them.
Quote:I still dont feel as powerful as my /EM or /Stone (both lvl 50). I have said from the beginning, its quick, its beautiful, its low on end, it looks and acts less damaging than it is. I still hold to the fact that the combos are key. I tried weaken combo then empower then 1k cuts dozens and dozens of times and even fighting yellows with no debuffs and no vengence i rarely got all seven without a miss.
I do agree that the combos do a lot for Dual Blades, as they should. Weaken and Empower can be helpful for tanks, and Sweep and AV add to your damage and mitigation (nothing like knocking down a swath of enemies at once).
Other sets are going to have their strong points, of course. Don't expect Dual Blades to outdo them all. Overall, Dual Blades is much better than Energy Melee, though it is weaker for ST damage (I'll take that for the mass of AOE damage you can do). All the numbers I have seen the crunchers put out there make Dual Blades solidly in the pack with the other sets, and personal experience has confirmed that.
Quote:I am also still slotting up my attacks. As you can see. Ty Grey for taking a look. Yes i took murky cloud and sweeping very late. I realize i need a lot of rech in typhoons because that thing is great and necessary for combos often. I will definitely consider dropping acrobatics. As for stamina i have already purchased a 4 set of efficacy adaptor (lvl 50) that is just waiting to be slotted at 47.
I don't know too much about Cloak of Darkness, but I would make do with fewer slots in there so you can get your attacks more slotted up, and the same with your other shields. Later on some of these lesser things like Nimble Slash and Cloak of Darkness can get slotted up, but they can wait. Prioritizing your slots is a good idea in any build.
If you want, you can take a look at the guide in my sig. Yes, it's for Fiery Aura, but I discuss enhancements in there, and some of the methodology I'm referring to is in there. -
Quote:I wouldn't mind joining in, though I'd like to unlock Viridian to run it through, too. And man, why does Viridian require so much to unlock him? I remember looking this up before, and it's ridiculous. 200 tanks, 200 Paragon Protectors, 200 Sorcerors, and all of those are much more rare redside. Ugh.Glad everyone could make it.
Easily one of the best arcs in the game.
Might need to make this a double XP tradition. It's way funnerer than Endless Borea.
Sure, you can hunt all those, but it's a silly requirement. I think that's the biggest thing I hate about redside: having to run mayhems to get just one contact unlocked. At least most of the other unlockable contacts aren't too onerous. -
That's your exact build for slots and power picks (even if they're slightly out of order)? Just checking, as it seems odd that you have a fourth slot in Stamina with nothing in it, a few powers aren't fully slotted for how far along you are, etc. I'm going to make my comments assuming it is, though.
If you are just going to stick with Regular IOs (no sets), then either put Stamina to three slots. There's a slot to put somewhere else that isn't needed there. And you need those slots elsewhere, as you have a lot of powers and attacks that aren't fully slotted. No wonder you don't like AV... you have Sweeping Strike slotted with one accuracy. It's one of your best attacks and a cone... slot that one up all the way! 2 acc, 3 dam, and give it an end or recharge, depending on what you need (or frankenslot to get more out of it if you don't want to go with a pure set).
You will have to hold off on slots for maybe some of the lighter attacks until you're higher up, but you can slot them all well. I took all the attacks on my DB, and I grabbed WP, which is a set that you want to pick a lot of and slot well also.
I'd say it is worth investing in -KB IO, just to dump Acrobatics. It takes up a power pick and is an end drain. Would let you get Murky Cloud sooner, too.
A couple things to remember... DB throws up a lot of little orange numbers, as hits often do 2-4 hits each, rather than one big one. Mace feels like it's doing more damage from one big number, but it adds up. Both mow down swathes of foes quite well.
Enough for now, but that's a start. -

Quote:This bodes poorly for what? An indicator of your patience? It's been 40 minutes and counting. I'll probably give people hourly updates on this event. 9PM CST now and no reaction from Support. This bodes poorly.
Your not receiving a response yet does not mean that NCSoft is ignoring your or hates you, it just means that they haven't gotten to your petition yet. On a 2XP/Double Activation weekend with a big surge in people playing.
I'm not sure if the support team is working on the weekend, but their not responding to you immediately is not a bad thing. They do not have one support person for each player, just sitting at a desk, waiting for you to have a problem they can fix.
Seriously, just think about it. Do you think they do not want you to be able to play your Dual Pistols character (like many people are doing in game right now)? No. There is a reason they let you preorder for this weekend. So your success in this endeavor is important to them. They also have other customers besides you, and a budget for the game.
I'm not saying you should not expect a response, but expecting one NAO! is not particularly realistic or fair at this moment.
