Yes, I know. Read up a little bit -- I make mention of it. I posted the WHQL link for those who would rather have an "official" version, and for those players using laptops who would like to upgrade anyways (Ultra Mode or not). And really, unless you're looking to squeeze every fps out of the game and hope that the preview drivers will give increased performance over the release version, or play one of the other games that the preview drivers provide fixes for, there's not much difference to CoH players WHICH version of the 10.4 drivers they choose.

Black, the 10.4a preview includes drivers for x64 versions of xp, vista, and win7. The only thing that non-WHQL ATI driver packages usually don't include are Mobility drivers for laptops, since a little work has to be done to optimize them. But unless the FSAA/AO problem is indeed resolved in these or you experience one of the problems in other games that these fix, you're perfectly fine waiting for the official release.

So the 10.4a preview is newer/more advanced than the drivers that release today? That seems kinda silly...
Blame Microsoft. If ATI had their way, they wouldn't even bother with the WHQL process (releasing preview and hotfix drivers side-steps WHQL as it is), as all it does is basically give programs their stamp of approval that your machine won't blow up if you use them ... which any software from a reputable source shouldn't do anyways, these days. This means that any subsequent fixes or improvements must either be put off unti you're ready to compile the next WHQL version, or you release them without the WHQL testing.

I honestly have no clue, Bill. I'm still using the 10.4 preview, and only found out about the 10.4a preview a short time ago. Nothing is specifically mentioned about CoH in any documentation, though. All I do know is that the actual driver is newer than what will be in the WHQL package. I don't plan on upgrading today, but if you do, let us know if the FSAA/AO problem is fixed. I have my doubts, but you never know.
  4. Wednesdays are usually driver release days for ATI, so they SHOULD be releasing the 10.4 drivers today. However, since Issue 17 will be live any minute, here's a link to the 10.4a preview drivers. The drivers themselves are actually newer than what will be in the WHQL package, and are also newer than the previous 10.4 preview drivers. Please note that while all home versions of XP, Vista, and Win7 are covered by these drivers, laptops are not. This means that those of you using laptops will need to wait for the Mobility drivers included in the 10.4 WHQL should you want to update your drivers for Issue 17.

  5. Official Announcement

Same as last year, I'd imagine: tons of GMs, zombie and Rikti attacks, Halloween stuff, the Winter Lord, AVs and Heroes, and who knows what else!

Be in Atlas or Talos if you're a hero, or Cap if you're a villain; see y'all there!

If I were you, I'd wait until the official release version. Like I said, it should be next week sometime. I just installed the preview version because I'd already tried every other Catalyst release during the I17 closed beta.

I think something's up somewhere because when I start the game, it shuts off Aero effects and goes right to basic, but when I go into display properties it shows Aero as being enabled. When I exit the game, Aero re-enables itself. So to recap, Aero theme enabled, starting CoX disables the Aero effects but does not change the theme, and closing CoX re-enables Aero effects.

It's an issue with both my machine and my wife's, both running 10.3 drivers, both running 5xxx series cards, both using dual monitors. This issue has persisted through a reformat and a full reinstall of CoX so I have basically accepted it, but I sure would love a fix. I have tried running maximized windowed mode but it's just not for me.
As Bill said, install the 10.4s when they come out (should be next week). I'm running a preview version of them right now, and am able to alt+tab while in fullscreen regardless of whether or not I have Aero enabled.

Good to have you aboard, BS! looking forward to any and all positive effects your work will have on the Ma power system ... especially if it eventually allows me to fight a proper version of my Crab Spider doppelganger. As it is, he doesn't last very long just using an Arachnos rifle and a few melee spider leg attacks.

I've tried everything, went back to normal HP update which I've had the best/lest lag in game, loaded Catalyst Control Center 6.4, updated to 10.1, then 10.2, then 10.3 and even 10.4 = all cause More lag and less picture sharpness.

At the normal HP updates I have nice picture/less lag on live and a nice moving/frame rate on Test = of my Auras, I see Only auras and names over player's heads, going with Any of the catalysts I get to see everything but frame rate so bad can't move.

What am I doing wrong or what have I missed doing?
You should have said from the start you were on a laptop.

Laptop drivers are not the same as desktop drivers, and you've more than likely got desktop drivers installed, and that's likely causing a lot of your problems. Lemme see what I can find ...

I'll try to answer what I can.

    Quote:
    1) How quick is it to level on average compared to other online games?
This is a very tricky question, because it really all depends on how you play. Generally speaking, however, it shouldn't take THAT long to hit level 50. The game ceased being a grindfest years ago, and our developers have actually taken multiple steps to make it easier to get past the first 20 or so levels.

    Quote:
    2) Can one change the size/mass/appearance easily in COV ingame? Or is it all rather preset? I read you could change the costume but what about the physique?
From the tailor (or Facemaker if you're playing a villain), you can adjust the physique and facial sliders of your character at the same time you change your costume. Although, you cannot change the gender or height of your characters by default. If you purchase the Super Science booster pack (one of several optional add-ons containing costume pieces, emotes, and thematic powers or features), you gain the ability to change those attributes as well.

    Quote:
    3) I love the design and background of Lord Recluse, how does one unlock the Arachnos classes? And how do these classes work exactly? Are they prestige classes that specialize a chars powers? Or do they override?
The villain epic archetypes (VEATs for short) are currently unlocked when you get a villain to level 50, but in the upcoming "Issue 17: Dark Mirror" update, you'll only need to get a villain to level 20 to unlock them. They're two separate archetypes - Arachnos Soldiers and Arachnos Widows - that you'll be able to make new characters with. In this game, the four epic archetypes are called such not because they're any more powerful than the other classes, but because they all have special overarching storylines which tie into the greater game lore. That said, the villain epics are quite fun. My main and namesake is a level 50 Crab Spider who is an AoE machine.

    Quote:
    4) Is it possible to do the entire game as a Recluse loyalist or is it one of those games where your hand is forced to eventually oppose his scheme(s)?
    You don't become a "good guy", if that's what you're asking ...

    Quote:
    5) I noticed there exist gamecards for this game but given that access is at times a bit unbalanced to them, does one have to have VISA to pay for the subscription or can one just use bank transfer or paypal?
You can use paypal, and should you do so, you can also choose whether you want recurring payment or not.

    Quote:
    6) And most vital... i heard that some people lost their chars after being gone too long. Is this the case in this game?
You don't lose characters. But if your account has been inactive for at least 6 months - I think - and the developers run a certain script, your characters names will be lost should someone decide to make a character with the same name.

I noticed that you exclusively mentioned City of Villains. I'm not sure how trial accounts are set up (assuming you're on a trial), but buying the game proper will give you access to both City of Villains and City of Heroes. If you do decide to join us full-time, I advise buying the Architect Edition of the game. This is the newest version of the game, and will also allow you to access Architect Entertainment, where players can create their own storyarcs and play through storyarcs created by other players.

ADDED: In response to the comment above about rushing to 50 not really being that important, that's absolutely true. However, with the Going Rogue expansion coming in June or July, there will be a new post-50 advancement system called the Incarnate System. Also, heroes will be able to go bad, villains will be able to go good, and there will be a new 1-20 play experience in the alternate dimension world of Praetorian Earth.
  12. I'm afraid I don't have much to add to the thread at the moment in terms of serious, relevant discussion of existing and potential future marketing strategies for the City of Heroes franchise. But I'm thinking about it (Cthulhu help us all).

In the meantime, allow me to post what everyone was thinking when this thread was made:

    Gaming Survey

    Done.

And like others, I have a few complaints about how the survey was constructed. In particular, I have an issue with the question asking if a rise in violence in video games is the result of the ability to create more realistic graphics. First of all, the wording assumes that the person filling out the survey believes that there has been an increase in violent games. It's biased as all hell, and an absolutely horrible question to even have on what you say is a preliminary survey because it completely invalidates one of the possible answers for the question immediately preceding it. Furthermore, if I'm remembering the question wording correctly (and please tell me if I'm not), it implies causation between the ability to create more lifelike graphics and an increase in violence. Again, a serious faux pas when you're trying to conduct serious research. At most, you might be able to get away with asking someone if they believe that there could be some correlation between the two, but even that's kinda sketchy since all that question would produce is unquantified, subjective data. After all, correlation can be either positive or negative.

You say that this is just an informal survey designed to gather broad information. In this task, I'm afraid it fails. It's vague, skewed toward producing data that supports one particular argument, and honestly a little on the short side. You don't need to break out the heavy statistical analysis or anything, but this survey really needs to be re-written if you want your further research to be built on a solid foundation.

Now as an addendum to my survey answers:

I'm not entirely sure that violence in video games has actually increased over time. I mean, there was a Texas chainsaw Massacre game for the Atari 2600 where you played as Leatherface and your objective was to run around killing people! That's just one example of many, and I'm not even counting games like Custer's Revenge *shudder*. It's certainly more obvious than it would have been back in the Atari or NES days, and that IS tied to the increase over time in graphical quality, but in my opinion, it's not a case of direct causation. Everything in video games has become more realistic and visually intense over the years. Also, as video games have become more and more mainstream, there have been more and more people scrutinizing them. And what constitutes "violence" as far as your dissertation goes? Is it graphic violence? Realistic violence? Violence that could be copied by people outside of video games? Because if you mean violence in general, then it's been a major part of the video game industry long before Halo, Call of duty, or Grand Theft Auto.
  14. I'm the one who sent Avatea a PM about this (might not be the only one, though). The "Captain Sweatpants" character is so named because he always wears the blue hero logo shirt and sweatpants. And the comic shop set on the show is full of NCSoft merch as background elements, not just CoH stuff.

  17. ATTENTION: When the Catalyst 10.4 drivers are released this month, INSTALL THEM!

They contain a fix for the Shadow Map Shader crash issue that will otherwise affect any ATI users still running the 10.2 or 10.3 drivers once Issue 17 goes live (and is currently affecting any ATI users with those either of those drivers trying out I17 on the Training room right now). I have verified this myself by using a preview version of the 10.4 drivers that was released today. I will post links to the official release 10.4s in this thread when they become available.

Additionally, the ability to switch tasks via Alt-Tab has been fixed.
  18. Like you said, it's a "free" sketch of your namesake character, done by Jim Lee. Not much else to say other than "congrats!".
  19. These days, I usually only auto-complete the "Defeat X enemies in Hazard Zone Y" missions. And that's really because there's nothing else to do in those zones. If I could finish the mission and hang around to do storyarcs or something, I wouldn't mind it so much. Other situations may sometimes pop up, but that's about the only reason I use it anymore.

P_P, it's an expansion, not an entirely new game. Twenty levels worth of new content with new art assets, new NPC groups, new storylines; new endgame content; multiple new powersets; new costume sets; new tech; and whatever else may get thrown in there is a pretty damn nice expansion.

I realize that you have an almost pathological need for brand new shinies - be they powers, animations, costumes, zones, whatever - and that you have the boredom threshold of a chipmunk geeked on speed. But c'mon now ... you're really going to complain about this?! I honestly don't think it's humanly possible for the dev team to crank out new stuff at a pace that would EVER satisfy you, to be perfectly honest. And that's not their fault at all.
  22. Tremendous.

    Three things:

    1) Devs hate henchmen!

    2) Nice reference to the Jason Todd death vote.

    3) OMG WANT PRAETORIAN CLOCKWORK COSTUME BITS NAO!
  23. My main is definitely becoming a Rogue so he can do TFs and take part in blue-side activities. I've got a low-level hero who might become a Vigilante for concept reasons. And I'm definitely considering a Praetoria-started Villainous Tanker, and either a Heroic Brute or Stalker. I'm sure once the option exists, I'll have more characters across the entire spectrum. The majority of my characters, though, are likely going to keep their allegiances.
