As far as I know, that still only applies to rooms - the doorways don't count - you can't decorate them, you can't light them, you can't give them their own textures- they really do need some work

Doorways can never be as light as normal rooms - the closest you can get is by placing lights as close to the doorways as you can, to reduce the shadows a bit.
