  1. Yep, we're alternating weeks for now. Next PT should be out next Wednesday.

  2. Yes, keep these entries coming (quicker, darn it!! ) I'm enjoying them very much!

    -Gil
  3. The Azuria article is on my "to do list." I think she's a truly interesting subject. And a challenge. Thanks!

    -Gil
  4. Thanks folks! I'm looking forward to doing many more "Beyond Contact" articles.

Great stuff, although I feel a bit bad for her:
"Out of this reorganization, the City Representative’s office was totally overhauled—largely due to the efforts of Ms. Moreira herself."

The poor woman is standing in that lobby 24/7, so she's likely never even seen said overhauled office

And I'd just like to add my support for an article on the amazing misplacer of artifacts, Ms Azuria.

  7. FYI: ArenaNet, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NCsoft Corporation, was founded by key members of the creative teams that developed the hit games Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo, as well as the Battle.net gaming network.

  8. Oh and before I forget (not that I really could)... Thank you for a great year! Happy Anniversary to CoH and its wonderful community!

Without all of you this would have been, to paraphrase Han Solo, "a real short trip."

    Yes? So do I...

  10. For some reason I really like the above "Doctor_Why" post. Questions, questions, questions... I'm longing to answer them. Call it a challenge. Grist for the mill. Whatever. I think "Doc" Lardner may just turn out to be quite a character if given half a chance. Thanks.

    -Gil
  11. Hmmm...interesting. I think it's a job for Jackson. Thanks!

    -Gil
  12. Hey no personal offense taken. You dangle your work out in front of a few thousand people... you get opinions, you get advice, you get everything from "it's great" to "it sucks so hard that light can't even escape."

I do my best. I try to learn. I try to do better. I try different approaches... else it all becomes writing by rote.

Sometimes you fail by a small margin. Sometimes by a chasm. But you still have to try. Or you stop being a writer and get a real job...

I appreciate the passion all of you have for CoH. The fact that folks are so vocal means, to me, that you care. And that is a very good thing.

    -Gil
  13. That's pretty funny... when I debuted the first real "fluff" piece--"The Paragon Times Building"--the populace howled that it had nothing to do with in-game play. I mean it was vocal. Then folks got used to these historical articles. Twice now, I've written about things that do affect in-game play and folks now complain it doesn't have enough background story.

So, I'll take whatever is said on this forum with a bucket of salt--and just keep on truckin'.

He sounds like a mix between Tony Danza and Jack Klugman. Which means I can hate and love him in equal amounts.

That's actually a pretty good description of ol' Ernie. Thanks!
  15. [ QUOTE ]
Great column, Ernie. And great name, "Doc." Althought, admitedly, I enjoy your Jackson Turner persona a lot more, since sportscasters and sports columnists piss me off ninety-nine percent of the time.

    [/ QUOTE ]

And "Doc" is a former heavyweight boxer with a 6-12 record. He's moody. He's forgetful. He's sentimental. He's corny. He writes with two fingers on the keyboard. But he loves what he does.
  16. [ QUOTE ]
Just wanted to say that this was my least favorite of the articles, for a few reasons:

    1) As already pointed out, it felt too OOG and not IG.

    2) It had too much of a corny joke feel to it (especially the putt-putt and AAA B-ball line)

    3) It didn't sound like a sports page article. Take it from someone who reads that sports page ALOT, the "author" didn't sound like a Mike Lupica or Bob Ryan. Plus, no "athlete" quotes.

    4) It didn't give any new information, at least for me. I could find the same info(except the Olympic bid part) on the web site already.

A possible improvement may have been an extra section with box scores and game schedules.

What I really would have liked was an article or an editorial pointing out how the city just spent millions/billions of dollars on three stadiums for heroes, yet haven't spent a dime on cleaning up Boomtown!

This is all just constructive criticism, of course, so take it for what it's worth. In the end, whether I like the article or not, I really do appreciate the time, effort, and enginuity Gil and his team put into them. You guys are awesome, and are another prime example of why this game has the best dev team around.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think folks are missing the point. They're all too fixated on the whole "It doesn't sound like it's a sports article"; "It's too OOG"; "It needs box scores and quotes"; and all that. The thing has one simple job--explain the functions of the Battle Terminals. That's it. It doesn't have to entertain you. It doesn't have to talk about other sports. It doesn't have to expose corrupt politicians. It doesn't have to give you Statesman's shoe size. That I chose to invent a sports column as a vehicle--hey, my fun and my choice. It could easily have been a bulleted list.

Frankly, I don't understand this whole OOG/IG stuff. Like I wrote earlier, "Doc" is talking about a "game" within a game--and as it so happens, this game uses computer game terminology. Who's to say this "Arena" combat can't borrow terminology from the computer PVP tradition. If Ernie is going to be covering the Arenas as a "sport" then there will have to be some way of talking about the combat. Phrases and descriptions specific to super-powered fighting will have to be used. It so happens, CoH comes with a plethora of such handy descriptions. Sure, they're used at the gamer level and not at the role-playing level--but maybe that will change. Sports are full of unique descriptors. It's much easier to say he threw a "knuckleball" than he threw a ball that had no spin and wobbled all over the place. Or he threw an "uppercut," rather than say he hit his opponent with an upward aimed punch. Hey, I'm just saying...

Anyway, whether you get the fluff or just the facts or the fluffy facts... it's pretty much all the same to me.

  19. [ QUOTE ]
Looks okay, but the thing is that it uses a purely game term (PVP) in what is supposed to be an IC article. Doesn't quite fit, and the bold faced lists look out of place as well. This one, like the Sister Psyche article, doesn't read like something you'd find in a newspaper.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You guys really take this newspaper thing seriously. By the way, it's a column--"Doc" can write whatever he wants, in the way he wants. Oh, and by the way, he's talking about a game. One that happens to use those terms. It happens to share a vocabulary with certain computer games... what can I do?
