I have been wondering about this myself and so far I have not found any answers. Not even the hint to an answer. It would make sense but would also cost them money in that people are not buying more slots. So all in all, I would say prbably not. If anyone else finds an answer to this though please post it AND throw me a PM.
  2. It'll be nice to see this happen. My very first toon is a defender and I could not solo at all unless I was willing to spend massive amounts of time on a single mission. Still Defenders have a special place in my heart and I am glad to see them getting more quality love here.

Additionally, any enemies that actually deal damage will take experience based on the amount of damage they deal. Therefore, while attacking pets have always given a penalty, you can still use a single buffbot ally and not have it impact your experience.

I said, and I quote, "it encourages everyone to use one (because there's no penalty for using one)." Using one single buffbot will not impact your experience.
Oh I get pulled back in because I see I did misunderstand your post there and I have no problem admitting that.

I still just can't understand the hang-up though since a permanent fix is supposed to be coming out with Issue 17. As I said earlier, this all could have been avoided by the devs or fixed earlier, but I understand priorities. I will admit that the heavy handedness of the temp fix seemed rather overdone but since it has been done, I am waiting to pass judgement on this whole affair even though I do approve of it personally right now.

Now, I am done. No more on this please. Here is my *pucker* for the kiss and make up.
  4. Ok, I am going to try to be there, but in case I can't make it, someone please ask about the Cathedral of Pain. Please! Please! Please! Please!

People are complaining because 1) this patch is bugged and penalizing players for every single ally, hostage, rescue, or friendly NPC on the entire map, 2) it doesn't stop buffbotters; in fact it encourages everyone to use one (because there's no penalty for using one) and make sure to never ever use an offensive pet -- especially more than one

I've created the following arcs. None of which have buffbots. None of them even have a single ally with a single buff power. However, all of them give reduced rewards because of this patch:

David and Goliath - Two missions have you rescue scientists from super-advanced Trolls. Another has you save cops. This patch reduces exp in those missions.

Nocturnal - This arc has 4 missions with allies. The main ones are DP/MA and Mercs/Traps. They don't buff. They take exp already because they deal damage. In addition to one of the missions having both of them as allies (for story purposes and so I have more people who can talk), one mission has 3 additional allies who turn on you when you start to fight a boss. Now, these count as allies even if you don't rescue them, and you get reduced exp.

My Date With a Celebrity - This arc is five missions, mostly a joke arc, with very little fighting. As such, most of the maps are full of friendly patrols, friendly bosses, friendly ambushes, captives, and other things. Not one of them is a buffbot, and only one of them (the "celebrity") ever follows you -- and she's MA/regen. Now even the small amount of exp you do get for doing this arc is reduced to almost nothing.

Not only that, but I looked through the list of Dev Choice arcs. Of every single Dev Choice arc currently existing, only one single arc has no objectives that would result in reduced experience by this patch. One, out of more than two pages. That's something like a 95%+ hit rate on things that weren't exploiting, cheating, or buffbotting.

You are flat out wrong if you think this only affects exploiters, cheaters, farmers, and buffbotters. The fact is this affects more than half, if not more than 90% of all arcs in the entire game. Almost every legitimate arc out there has been hit by the patch catching "allies" and giving an exp penalty to the mission.

People are mad because this causes damage to almost every arc that exists, legitimate or not. Not because they're all cheaters.
Dispari, personally i think you have invested WAY to much emotion into this, but that is your right. I am not going to waste my time correcting your misunderstanding of my post except to say this:

I just got done testing two different arcs that are buffbot arcs (and no other ally types period), with two different toons. I then used the same toons to test an arc that has no buffers, no allies, and no clickies. In short it is a straight kill the leader to win. If buffbots are not affecting anything then why was my reward for a lvl 53 boss about 1/3 of what the non-buffer mission was?

TehHippeh, as for your comments. I see you flame most anyone who disagrees with you as well. Too bad. I do enjoy a good arguement.

Since this thread has degenrated in nothing more than a flame-fest, I'm done with it. The rest of you are welcome to continue though until Issue 17 comes out as is your right. I'm just not investing any more energy into it.

Good suggestion and unfortunately for you I already had done that and then decided to do so again. I particulary like the post from Rodion on page two (post #40 I believe).

Want to know what I found? It seems the majority of people are either neutral to the fix and waiting to see what happens with the permanent fix in Issue 17 or like the fix.

Of the people who did not like it, that seemed to come from mostly farmers/exploiters who are upset they can't solo farm a mission at +3/x8 anymore. I admit that I am drawing a conclusion there, but since few of them complained about specific non-exploitative missions they had made, I feel justified I have drawn a good conclusion. I feel even better since many of these same people have admitted to exploitative behavior on other forums.

The only people I feel sorry for are the ones that tried to set up decent stories that are seriously affected by this fix. One player mentioned a Prison Riot mission that really sounded cool and I would have liked to see that (as soon as I can find it I will play it regardless of the rewards). Unfortunately it got nerfed because of the Allies involved. If the stories are good though, I will still play them with my 50's for fun, and recommend them to my friends, so I don't see that as a problem myself.

I especially do not feel sorry for the ones that tried to make an AV or GM soloable mission by adding buffbots.

Now for the people who try to argue that buffbots are not an exploit, well their arguement is flawed. The Devs would not have created this "fix" unless an unintended exploit was discovered. I will go along with the complaints that they should have seen this and not allowed it in the first place though. I will also go along with the fact that the fix should have been implemented a long time ago, but I won't push that one too hard since I understand prioritizing.

Lastly, Tokyo, I did some further research. It was on you. Why is it that you so often attack people you don't agree with? I am not talking about responding rudely to the people who were rude to you first. I can understand that and have done it a time or three myself, though most times people seem to misinterpret my being blunt with being rude.

I was actually rather surprised to see your Neg Rep after you responded to one of my previous posts since that one was walking the line of rudeness but had a hard tilt to the side of just being blunt. After doing my little bit of research though, I see that almost any time you disagree with someone, you are either sacastic, demeaning, or down right rude. Please try to be a little less thin skinned about it.

To end this on a positive note, even though I dislike farmers, marketeers, and power gamers in general; I have to say your play on the Communist Manifesto was Awesome. Very creative.

    * Would be the most work out of just about all possible solutions

    * Probably not going to happen
I have to agree with you on all accounts Dispari. I also wish they would come out with a Villain Blaster AT and a Hero Mastermind AT to help balance things out. After all we already have:

    Tank - Brute
    Scrapper - Stalker
    Defender - Corruptor
    Controller - Dominator

Somehow though a Blaster just does not equal out to a Mastermind and vice versa. I would also like to see Villains allowed into the Shardow Shard in GR.

I do have to say though, I think that GR was intended to help equal out the whole mismatched ATs and unequal zones arguements as well as adding a whole new dimension to the game itself.
  8. So . . . anyone want to hazard a guess as to how much longer we have to wait for Issue 17 since Open Beta has started? I am guessing either the 20th or the 27th, probably the 27th though. Both of these dates are Tuesdays which allows that to get back from the weekend on a Monday and deal with the issue release on Tuesday, while still having Wed-Fri to fix any major issues that may come up.

Who knows though, I could be completely wrong.
  9. I just got my 66 month Veteran Reward tonight. The extra 5 salvage and extra 5 recipe slots will be nice, especially on the lower level toons. I hate running to the store after every mission.

Sure, I like her. But I don't always agree with her on things that aren't hard facts. In any case, people should be skeptical of nearly anything anyone claims to be fact on an internet forum.

But the thing about this particular argument is that everyone is on the same side!

Everyone wants the devs to be able to fix the problem with AE buffers without breaking the AE for legitimate missions, most especially Arcanaville.

When she says it's not easy, I tend to beleive she's not being obstructive: she has nothing to gain by it.

Remember, the AE is superior to the tools devs had for making missions before it existed.

Also remember that no code the Devs can write is going to be able to divine your intent in making an Ally or any other element for a mission. There is definitely going to be some sort of numbers-based solution that won't be perfect for everyone. Or soon enough, for that matter.

If the Devs have to go through all powers that have a buffing element and flag them to have some kind of xp gain rate debuff (my idea) when coming from allies, let's just hope that can be accomplished in days and not months.
I'll take your word on her special knowledge since trying to research anything on these forums is like pulling your own teeth. Well, except that pulling your own teeth is less painful.

Like I said earlier, I just like the way she argues. Most times she is so nice and even tempered but other people get all pissed off, it's funny as heck.

As for wanting AE fixed, your mostly right except for people like me that don't care for AE in general. I saw it's exploit factor on the very first mission I ran in there and was bored to death of it by the third run I was invited on. If anything though I really do think that "fixing" it will be harder than anyone can believe by at least a factor of 10. I do not envy the Devs on this front.

Let's face the facts that, for the most part, the only people really upset over this is the ones that were exploiting it in the first place. Me? I'll continue running missions and Ouro Arcs. They are more fun anyways.

I have to assume from your post that ArcanaVille is a friend of yours since you are defending her and personally I like her arguements myself.

I do have one problem with her though. Her claims to special knowledge of the game is kinda like my own political party members (democrats) crying racist anytime someone disagrees with Obama. It can't be proven, BUT still stops all legitimate arguement on the subject.

Now if she has this special knowledge cool, but until she is given a Red Name or one comes out and admits her special place with the company, I will have to continue to be skeptical.

Still, I do like how she argues her points most times. (I am assuming she is a female for some reason, not sure why.)

Note also that it would also be possible to make much more complex interactions. It's moving us toward some very interesting augmented-reality possibilities in the very near future.

But... maybe all this is best for another thread, rather than the unrelated April Fools announcement.

Y'know, you really could make a good comical "sidekick" defender powerset... a bunch of buffs and debuffs that fit the flavor of that April Fools announcement. I'd imagine it would be something like this:

1 Morale Boost PBAOE minor +regen, + recovery
For some insane reason, everyone seems to just feel better in your presence. They recover a little better, they have a bit more spring in their step... They like you. even if all their fans hate you. The fans are just jealous. Keep telling yourself that.

2 Battlecry Ranged cone, Target -Speed, -Resistance, -Fly, (akin to tar patch). Your targets thought they were real threats- villains to be reckoned with.... people to be feared... but THIS is who's sent against them? A SIDEKICK? Come on! this is just... just... embarrassing. Their adrenaline just drains away as they lose all enthusiasm for this fight.

3 Unceasing Protector Ally Rez, special.
When you're in trouble, your fallen teammates find that surge of energy necessary to come to your defense. The strength of the heal this rez brings is variable, based on the danger the caster is in (calculated by weighing the remaining health of the caster and the number of foes in melee range).

4 Headlong Charge. minor damage -DMG, -toHit, chance to stun, chance to confuse ally.
This is based off of Shield Defense's "Shield Charge..." damage replaced with debuffs. Some of your foes will be too stunned... or laughing too hard... to fight back. There's also a slim chance of causing a pbaoe confuse on teammates. Maybe the confusing fight was just that intense... or maybe they just decided you deserved a good slapping.

5 Babysitting Duty Ally Resist Disorientation, Hold, Sleep, Immobilization, Fear, Confusion, +Perception.
(Yes, this is Empathy's "Clear Mind.") Now that you've been saddled with the responsibility of protecting this annoying hapless twerp, you're more attentive and have a sharper level of mental acuity. The bumbling brat keeps you on your toes.

    6 Hero Worship Ally +Defense (All), +Damage.
This is much like Empathy's fortitude- a little stronger, but minus the +ACC. The ally fights better and more effectively knowing they're held in such high regard. They don't get the accuracy bonus because their attention's somewhat split-- what IS that sidekick getting into now?

7 NOTINTHEFACE! PBAOE Taunt, -DEF, -RES, -ToHit, self fear.
The level of debuff varies based on the number of foes affected, akin to Invincibility. This is a powerful debuff, balanced against the risk of a pbaoe taunt on an archetype with no defense and low hit points. Teammates must scramble to pull the foes back off of the defender before the defender dies, but they'll have a much easier time with the foes so distracted.

8 Lucky Shot Ranged, High Foe Stun, chance of buildup on target
Everyone gets lucky once in a while. Sure, you didn't take the foe down, but you brained him pretty good. You better hope your teammates take him down before he wakes, though, kid.... he's gonna be pissed.... (needs a bararang animation)

9 Cries of Pain. A variable-strength version of the empath's "adrenaline boost."
The strength of this buff is based on the remaining hit-points of the caster: weaker than the empath's version when the sidekick is in pretty good health, more powerful when the sidekick is near-death. If cast needlessly- when the sidekick is at FULL health, it actually applies a minor debuff due to the annoying twerp's distraction. If the caster is at death's door, this becomes a full team buff.
    Ok, this was funny.

    2) An everything store with very high prices (say 20 or more X the sell value). This will put a ceiling on WW/BM prices because you could always go to the Super-Store. It would also counter the drop rate problem.

    3) Charge inf to use the Arena and AE. This will cause a sink for inf. (of course if the Devs don't fix AE or to some PvP this sink wont do much.)

    4) Allow people to turn of Inf to get more XP. This will also cause an inf sink. And it would please PL who want to get post level 20 or for that matter level 50.

    5) Allow people to buy levels with inf. (If you want to prevent them buying every level, allow the purchase of 1 level every 3 days like dropping a mission.) Again Inf sink and PL made happy.

    6) Bring back the random recipe roll at the end of TF. (Keep this as an option pick merits to buy recipes later or take the roll now). Then KHTF and Eden would bring more recipes in to the markets.

    7) allow us to Bribe contacts to open up their arcs if we haven't met them yet. (small inf sink but a QoL change)
Wow GPBunny, you got some good ideas, I personally don't like number 4 unless you cap the level purchase at say 22, but still, awesome ideas.

The Superstore idea I have been toying with as a request myself for some time now.

Here are some of my ideas:

    8) A "debuff" on influence for the next "XX" kills after getting rezzed that would scale with your level. (would drop earnings a little w/o hurting lower level toons overly)

    9) Making people buy the accolade powers/badges after they have earned the appropriate badges.

    10) Make it so not being in "SG Mode" still costs toons a cut of the influence and earns prestige for the SG (say half of the current rates), but in "SG Mode" they sacrifice a little more (normal current rates).

    11) Let people buy their costume slots instead of waiting for the levels. I know I would love this one since I like to have my "Civilian Attire" on many of my toons.

Keep it up folks, who has the next idea?

In a way it already does. Every kill made gives a percentage chance for recieving a drop regardless of who on the team makes the kill. So the larger the team, the more likely the chance for a drop overall. It all come out to the number of enemies killed.

I have some nights that three missions on an 8 man team will yeild me 30-40 drops overall, most of them being inspirations. Other nights under the same conditions though, I will get less than 10.

I agree Lemming, I would like an immediate cell phone Veteran power too, but I would put it way back around the 24th month instead of 75+ months. Anyone else have any good ideas for Veteran Powers?

Mine is changing Blackwand and the Nemisis Staff to a permanent 5% temporary debuff added to all you powers instead of doing damage and being it's own attack power. I love the powers to be honest, but it really does not go with some of my toons themes.

I am so amazed at the immaturity of some people on these forums. Seems you can't let your opinion be known, in a non-rude manner, without getting flamed for it on the Reputation side as evidenced when someone posted this on my Rep:

"Ka-pow, more neg-rep for you, Captain Entitlement."

I may be wrong, but I do not believe anyone can make an honest arguement that the CoH website does not need some serious updating. Heck, they don't even list updates on the main website anymore, you have to sift through the forums to find them. What info is listed on the main website is lame duck even.

In the last week alone I tried to get two people to try the game out while talking on the phone with them. Both were actually kinda excited about the game until they saw the CoH website and the COMPLETE lack of information turned them off. They did like the look but as one of them told me:

"The website was pretty and all, but it was kinda like eating a ham and cheese sandwich, without any ham or cheese in it. Just no substance."

I'm not asking for complete powers descriptions and the numbers to match, but how about a general overview of the powers? Updating the enemies might be nice too since that has not been done in several issues. Maybe even zone descriptions and a list of TFs/SFs. As things stand now, I will never send someone to the website hoping to entice them into joining the game. Unfortunately since most of my friends are a long plane flight away, that probably means getting people to join via word of mouth will be impossible too.

As for the new tech thing with using a webcam to change a symbol on paper to a character on your computer screen, well I am sorry but it has about a 3 second coolness factor. I am pretty sure that most people that see this will never try it. Of those that do, I think very few will do it more than once. Maybe I could have gone into more detail, but really, why did I need to.

Put simply, Neg Rep people for being rude or deliberately misinforming others, but not for having an opinion that differs from yours.
  21. Touchdown as the buzzer sounds. Thank you FreckledAvenger. Maybe now people will stop complaining and actually wait to see what happens.

I think some of it has to do with the fact modern folks relate more to regular people with super abilities. Both Natural and Tech are essentially the same kind of thing. Naturals often use devices and Techs often rely of personal skill in addition to their gear. Magic's essentially the same kind of canard as Science in comic books. They're both tools ordinary folks don't understand very well that can do miraculous things. Any technology that's advanced enough would seem like magic (to the uneducated) to badly paraphrase the old saw. However, Magic just seems inherently more dramatic and interesting. It's easier to put a face and a mood to than Science.

Mutation is just a subset of Science if you think about it (the mysterious, to most, power of evolution). Marvel made it stand out by creating some social commentary around mutants and normals which is probably the only reason I suspect folks would even bother to think of it as a separate category at all. This distinction doesn't appear to really exist in CoH that I can tell so there's no really compelling narrative reason to play a Mutant.

Back when everyone was getting bitten by radioactive spiders, science was a big deal. The space race was on, wild new inventions were popping up all over the place, the world was changing at a speed that seemed radical to everyone. These days we're utterly jaded. Science, yawn, right? Change is the norm. New technologies aren't any more or less impressive or mysterious or inspiring than this year's fashions.

    Anyhow, just some random thoughts.
Good Points, then you get people like me who pick there origin based on toon concept (which changes radically for each toon). I still end up as a magic or natural out of sheer habit though more often than not.

I first began playing CoH as a magic toon and learned all the store locations, so magic became my "norm" since I found it easier, then HEATs and VEATs pushed me around a little and a natural toon seemd a good idea.

In my opinion though, the background story of a toon is what really makes it interesting.
  24. I have to agree with the last three posts. Prices are too high based on a variety of things. Three of the biggies are:

1 - Poor reward drop rates
2 - An over abundance of money in the system and
3 - Very few sinks to remove extra money from the system.

This should be addressed in my opinion and already has in some ways such as nerfing ticket rewards in the AE system and nerfing the merit rewards (at least red side, can't really speak for blue side on that one).

Unfortunately, that doesn't address the three problems listed above. Anyone have any suggestions for those other than "Double the drop rates" or something along those lines?

Keep in mind that our toons do not need to eat or sleep. They don't HAVE TO have a home or pay the electric bill and taxes are null as well. Real word economics can only very broadly be applied here, but I would like to hear some ideas.
