  1. I resubbed my old account for a month. I checked Siren's and RV a couple times a day to see if anyone was there. During the entire month, I saw 2 people in those zones, and neither of them had any interest in pvp. I didn't even see any Korean farmers-it's that dead.

I encountered one guy in Warburg-because he said in Jello Shooters that he was there. I went there, attacked him, and killed him as he just stood there blandly. Then I helped him get his missiles and that was it.

You are seriously wasting your time trying to promote anything on Protector.

I'm not an Illustrator expert by any stretch of the imagination but I intend to lay out some basic options (drawing, gradients, etc.) in the Livestream.

Yeah there are people that can do photorealistic work with vectors. They're weird people, but people nonetheless.

Anyway i'll cover some of the basics. Even if you are pretty much a straight up raster/brush sort of person, there are times when using vectors and paths come in really handy.

Ok, this Thursday I think I will be talking about vector work. Why? Because my Wacom tablet is dead (sniff sniff you were too young to die baby!).

So there will also probably be some vector work in the book eventually since I have nothing to draw with until the replacement arrives.
  5. It can be as dark as you like. But looking at your image above--note the change in value between the lights and darks on his face. That sharp a contrast indicates a strong lightsource hitting the object from an angle. Like if you were in a dark room and held a flashlight under your face. The shading I used was based on the shading of his skin in that initial image.

If the room were really as bright as the image you posted, you're not gonna get that sharp gradiation on the skin.

  6. I greyed this out and did a quick paintover to indicate how I think the shading would go based on the shading you have on his face.

We are talking about percentages here.
There are a higher percentage of "people who behave badly" in PvP than there are in PvE.
No we're not talking about percentages. We are talking about anecdotal experiences and the conclusions people are drawing from them. You're stating an opinion, not any statistically derived percentage.

Maybe if you are that burned out and can't try to post comments on ways to improve PvP or increase the population of PvP'rs in the game, this isn't the thread for you.
I'm stating my perspective. Do you have a problem with that? Do you want to pm me your list of criteria to determine what threads are "for me"?

    Quote:
I see neither in your recent posts.
Your posts seem to be trying to prove that the reasons others find to avoid PvP are not valid.
The fact that people are posting those positions here shows that they are quite valid regardless of how you feel about the issue.
If people came here posting that the world was flat it still wouldn't be true regardless of how strongly they meant it or how many people posted it. No one here has said anything valid because no one to my knowledge has made any formal argument that can be established as valid.

I stated my opinion based on my experience promoting pvp in this game. If you don't agree with it, that's fine. Other than that, I'd rather you get out of my grill with the stuff about not being constructive or not appreciating the opinion of every unique snowflake that passes my way.
  8. Lol gimme a break. There are jerks in every sphere of this game. The reason that jerks drive people away from pvp is that the people so affected don't like pvp. If pvp were fun to them, they would learn to ignore the jerks or simply run their own events to avoid them. If you suddenly eliminated all the jerks from the game, the people who don't like pvp now are not going to suddenly start liking it and spending a lot of time doing it.

I ran PVPEC on Protector where I did have to rein people's behavior in. I more or less guaranteed people attending the events that everyone would play nice and not insult other players. It was a waste of time. The people who expressed so much concern over behavior did not get turned on to pvp.

kudos good sir, your efforts are appreciated.
Well, see you ***** about these forum trolling pvpers in the same post as you write that. The difference is some of their stuff is funny in a juvenile antics sort of way. Try getting some objectivity on your own attitude. Mine is one of general fatigue from dealing with both types of people.

A jerk can bother a few people, but do you really think that such a large portion of the community would have these feelings if they hadn't seen a lot of this kind of behavior by members of the pvp community.
The majority of the die-hard anti-pvp people I've encountered base their sentiment on a couple negative encounters, often in cases that are ambiguous at best from the perspective of pvpers (eg. he killed me while I was badging, even though I told him I was there to get a badge!). I've run across many people that swore off pvp after ONE incident where they were taunted in a pvp zone (eg. "haha die nub!").

In pve, I've encountered racists, sexually abusive people, all kinds of morons. Once I got kicked off a task force because my friend got a call that his father died. We weren't pulling our weight so we were unceremoniously dumped from the team without any expression of condolence.

If I reacted the same way to pve as many do to social interations in pvp, I would've bailed on this game after 3 months. You hear the jerk pvper explanation so much because it's an easy explanation for people who are disinclined to pvp period.

It's moot anyways. They won't fix pvp. Your odds are better just waiting on a better game to come out than for these devs to do anything here.

Thanks for checking it out Eddy! It's hard to tell when I'm actually doing these streams whether people are bored to tears by more theoretical discussion or if they are really interested.

    Hey guys,

For the livestream tomorrow I'll be showing a couple of things I've been working on recently, with some comments about workflow technique. I'll also be discussing a couple theories of art that I've found useful in viewing my own work and art in general. Hopefully it will be a good blend of actual work-in-progress and food for thought.

  17. There are lots of tutorials, Juggertha's included, on how to apply shading to drawings. The real difficulty is understanding the form of the thing you're trying to shade and then applying the shading appropriately to express that form.

The best way to get a grip on rendering volumes is to do the old art school thing of rendering basic shapes--spheres, cylinders, cones, etc. and then building up to more complex shapes. It takes observation and practice to learn this.
  18. Here's a comparison:

Linework basically established the contours of an object. Shading establishes the volumes within the contours. In order for those volumes to read, you have to be consistent in your shading: objects in from cast shadows on things behind, round objects cast round shadows, the most convex part of an object will have the brightest highlight, etc.
  19. I don't know if it's what's bothering you, but looking at the most recent image the shadows are inconsistent and don't support the volumes described by the linework.
  20. Depends on what you want to do with it. I generally work at print resolution, so if I'm making a picture that's 8.5" x 11" I'll have it set for 300dpi. So if you intended to print your work at any point, just set the document for the size you want and then the resolution for 300dpi.

Standard screen resolution is 72dpi. The pictures you see in my DA gallery were done at 300dpi and then reduced to 25% in order to be displayed online. Even if you intend for the thing to be shown only online, it's good practice to work at a larger resolution and then reduce it when you're finished. Scaling things down smooths out imperfections and makes edges cleaner.

    Lol somebody's gotten really jaded.
  23. Yes I think she said that "registering" was just submitting a piece the first month. If you do so, you're in.
  24. It's hard to get any work done over the Xmas season, which means things are going to start piling up in January. So knowing the theme early would be nice, at least to start coming up with ideas.
