Quote:Of course, this has to happen on my day off, instead of on the day I'm working a 12-hour shift and don't have time to play anyway...
I believe that that is an unwritten rule for MMOs: All maintenance and downtimes must occur on people's day off.
I had finally finished cleaning and had just set down to play some CoH and whoops, there go the servers. You'd think that the devs are trying to tell me that I hadn't finished cleaning yet.
I'm not going back to cleaning! -
As for unannounced downtime, this is the first in awhile. We've had regular maintenances and downtime for patches/new releases, but it's been relatively stable for the past few months.

I can't access any characters on Infinity or Exalted. Getting Map Cannot Be Found, as all my characters show Map: Unknown as their location.

I can access the servers, but all my characters show on Map: Unknown. On all but one character, I get: Cannot Find Map. On the character I was on when I crashed, I get: [Character Name] is not yet logged out. Please try again in a few minutes.

Quote:Well, it's only been at most 6 months; it's sometimes hard to change. This recklessness of Carl appears to be a direct impact from the loss of Sophia; he didn't start finding trouble until after she disappeared. Maybe he is trying to find his place in the group?I also blame Carl for Dale's death in last weeks episode, even if he didn't kill the zombie, he should have went and told someone. I really don't like Carl he is a complete idiot and for people who are gonna say, "Oh come on he is a kid, blah blah blah." You know there comes an age when technically you are still a kid but you should know better and you should take responsibilty for your actions and Carl is old enough, especially since zombies you have to age quickly.
On a side note, I agree, he's being an idiot, and after this, I would expect him to be ordered to stay with an adult at all times. If they don't, well, he deserves whatever he gets. -
Quote:Revenge of the Space Cicadas? Or are you thinking Gah Lak Tus?I was thinking of something involving some sort of large, black insectoid machines that come to reap all life on planets with space-faring civilizations. Perhaps they could do this on some sort of cyclical time scale, say once every 50,000 years.
The diorama is cool. I had also been thinking more sci-fi/space battles; the use of the word Terra for Earth is often a staple of sci-fi literature. -
Quote:Lori is probably preoccupied, and just has to take Carl's word that he was staying put and being a lookout. Besides, didn't you ever tell your parents you were doing one thing and went and did something else? I know that, if my mom ever found out some of the places I went to at that age, she would have grounded me for life.I just have to say Laurie is the worst mother on TV. One would think that in a world infested with Zombies she'd keep better track of her son. Every time we turn around Carl is getting into something he shouldn't be, and she wants to have another child... geez!
Now granted, Zombie land is a lot different than the late 70s, but not by that much. -
Quote:OK, it's been awhile since I read the earlier books, but didn't they find this out after the farm? I don't see to recall them coming across this issue until, well....can't say too much without a potential spoiler. Pretty sure Tyreese's daughter was the first one they encountered, but I could totally be misremembering it. (Unfortunately, senility is creeping in, so it could totally be me.The comic book handled this critical bit of knowledge in a more up-front way. If you've read the comics you knew pretty much from the very beginning that EVERYONE was fated to wake up as a zombie regardless. They may have not have known -why- it was happening, but it was a preestablished fact that it -would- happen.
)
Also, good catch on the "Governor" quote. I had to go back and hear it again to catch that. -
Is it May 4th yet?

I'm sad for the show it could have been, but never was.

I've always wanted to go see Centralia, PA just for this reason. I mean, just look at this sign:
Doesn't that just invite you in? -
Quote:AFAIK, the worst culprit is infection. More people die from infected wounds than the actual trauma itself. In our modem world, with easy access to doctors and medical supplies, most people would live in that situation. However, they have limited access to both, so any wounds can become very bad. Honestly, I'm kinda surprised that T-Dog lived after cutting himself so badly; that much blood coming out had to have been an artery.Other than being in pain/shock, is being disemboweled fatal? I've heard of people being stabbed or wounded in the abdomen and their intestines coming out and surviving. I guess the doc must have seen more ripped stuff inside Dale than just the skin and knew it was beyond his capability to fix.
I'm suspecting that Herschel might have been a combat medic/corpsmen in Vietnam. As such, he would have received some combat triage training as well as basic gun/rifle training. A combat medic would be able to do a quick diagnosis and determine who would be able to make it back to a mobile hospital for treatment from experts. These medics would receive an advanced first aid course to enable them to try and either stabilize or address a wound. Using said training, Herschel could have easily determined that Carl was saveable but Dale was not. -
Quote:Agreed. I'm just speculating on possibilities, that's all. The fact that the eyes tend to be one of the first things to rot away after death, it's not a big stretch to wonder what will happen when this does occur. Indeed, with a coming winter, cold enough weather will cause frostbite to the eyes, reducing or eliminating their ability to see. They didn't say on Talking Dead that they don't blink. The director was merely pointing out that the particular person playing that zombie didn't blink for that particular zombie to give it more of a "skull like" effect. But I didn't gather that meant all zombie's don't blink. It sounded to me like a specific decision made for dramatic effect.
Quote:Yeah the director was just doing a specific "no blink" thing for this episode. But it might be reasonable to assume that most of them don't blink in general anyway, especially when you consider lots of them probably have enough face damage/rot to make that impossible anyway. -
Thanks for the great information and hard work (as always!), Snow! I appreciate a one stop place to find what I need to work on with each new issue.
-
Just watched Talking Dead, which had an interesting factoid: The director stated that they intentionally filmed that zombie such that his eyes never blinked.
So, do zombies never blink? Is the autonomous reflex in a part of the brain which does not "reactivate"? And, if this is the case, will it be a nation of blind zombies in a few months? -
*** SPOILERS from March 4th episode ***
I find it amusing that Dale shuffles on, and apparently the next episode we find out how wrong he might be about Randall. Shane will get in his "I told you so"s for sure. Some rather large divergences from the comics at this point, which is really cool. I wasn't expecting Dale to die this fast; he managed to live quite a bit longer in the book.
OK, zombie behavior question: We've never seen a zombie animal of any sort, so I have to assume that the cow was still alive, but in a lot of pain. Why did the zombie leave the "feast"? We've never seen any of them leave a still living person/animal unless they were forced to. Isn't it a bit odd that this one decided to wander away long enough to surprise Dale? -
Sad to see the passing of someone who impacted your life, even if they never knew it. I grew up reading Berenstain Bears, and my daughter is as well. Jan and Stan taught great morale lessons in their books, and their presence will be missed.

*** COMIC BOOK SPOILERS***
There was Dexter in the comics, who basically was against the survivors, and wanted to force them out. He was a direct threat/challenge to Rick's authority, and Rick dealt with it rather directly.
*** END SPOILERS***
As for this episode, 2 thoughts:
1. The zombie cops obviously had weapons on them; why leave them there until the obvious need in the plot? Rick was already getting the thought that ammo was going to be scarce, so why didn't they take the guns? I thought Shane was going to take them, but then he left the belts there.
2. We finally got to see them scrounging, even though it appears they only took gas. A public works department would have a lot of usable tools at it; why no mention of coming back? I'm glad that Rick is at least looking forward towards winter, so supplies would be needed. I know supply runs would be boring for a TV show, but as least mention it in passing would show that it is a concern/priority. -
I remember the old Maria Jenkins arc, which had the 10 minute timed mission in it. You were looking for a glowie, no other objectives. It didn't matter if you succeeded or failed, the arc still continued onwards; all that was changed was the text from Maria afterwards.
That kind of fail I am okay with. It doesn't really invalidate my time at all, and I still get the chance to try to succeed. The future of my character and their gameplay isn't riding on whether I get it right the first time.
Almost all of the content in CoH is similar to this. You can restart it if you fail, and there are no limitations to this. The only arc that doesn't belong to this is Efficiency Expert Pither's arc, which can only be attempted once.
So, are these options at semi-failure good? In reality, I'd say no, as we rarely get the chance of a do-over. However, in a game that is definitely not reality, and is strictly for entertainment, I would say that our limited ability to fail is a good thing; it doesn't drive away players, which keeps the game in business.
Yes, there are some who would like the game to be more realistic. Most people play games, read books, watch movies, etc., as an escape from their reality, a momentary release of the stress and anxieties that they face on a daily basis. I guess it really depends on the kind of person you are, and no one can tell you that except for yourself.
tl;dr: CoH has some ways to fail, but not really. Some people like to fail, others don't. Good business = keeping both camps happy. -
