I'm certain anyone who wants can come up with a story that fits. I think the complaint has always been that its a constricted position. Not that it cant be done.
[/ QUOTE ]
Exactly. It's not a case of imagination like claimed in this thread. It's a case of perceived loss of control over one's character.
And that is where the problem lies.
People have bemoaned CoH's lack of a true "ending" for a while. Or, at the very least, lack of your characters actions in the overall involvement in the game environment. Sure, when you defeat Dr. Vahz, you no longer see Vahz (unless you go back to a low level zone, that is), but that's about it.
It seemed obvious that Lord Recluse and Mako personally wanted to change this from every interview I've seen from them since CoV alpha. They wanted the overall story arc of the "Chosen One" to be a prominent and overreaching theme.
So it comes down to the proverbial rock and a hard place. Some people want a bigger overall story arc. Some people want more freedom to do whatever they want. Both pay the same 15 dollars a month.
How would you handle it?
I think having two different games, one each that fits each philosophy, is a great way to solve the problem.
And really, that brings us into the next argument. "CoV feels too much like CoH" versus "CoV isn't similiar to CoH enough." Both sides have their points and non-points. Both sides pay the same 15 dollars a month.
How would you handle it? -

I just don't like how the powers LOOK.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's a completely different argument, Demand.
I'm debating the perceived limitations or lack thereof of imagination when it comes to roleplayers. -
But even then, no matter how the story is laid out for us, we're talking about imagination here.
And with imagination, there's always options.
Look at comic books. A classic theme is the ol' villain doublecross. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. So your brute "buddied" up and swore "allegiance" to Mako. Little did Mako know you only did so to get into his good graces to steal a little of his coralax power and eventually overthrow him and Lord Recluse. Or perhaps you did so only temporarily to try to learn the secrets of Sharkhead Isle once and for all. Or maybe you were mauled by a shark (or perhaps you prevented shark mauling by kissing it on the snout like Abigail from Duck Tales) as a child and want to use your fear to unlock your sense of vengence on the heroes, ala Batman using his fear of bats to his advantage.
If we're truly admitting this is a case about imagination, then we have to concede that imagination has no boundries. What's in the game is a starting off point only if you will it so. You can sidestep it all you want. -
Didn't we have the exact same complaints about Kheldians? That because they were all aliens people couldn't roleplay them?
I say bullocks.
This isn't about imagination. This is about perceived control of a character. A good roleplayer can roleplay anything. I'm not even a roleplayer and I can think of a million reasons why my corruptor suddenly has Ghost Widow's powers. Maybe he did align with her, to get closer to taking down Lord Recluse. Maybe he two-timed her and stole a rare artifact from her lair during a conversation that gave him some of her powers. Maybe as he grew in power, repeated exposure to the Night Widows have given him a kind of supernatural radiation poisioning.
As was early stated, there's conflicting arguments here. "CoV is too much like CoH" and "CoV is too different from CoH" is the same as "CoV is too villainous" or "CoV isn't villainous enough." That, too, is about a good imagination or lack thereof. -
Sam, this isn't me disagreeing with you, simply adding my two FOCE cents on top of your own.
To me, this entire thread is not unlike an episode of American Idol. Let's say the southern-bred rocker guy decided to take a chance one week and do a cover of Frank Sintara to show he had a different side. He comes onstage in a stylish tux with his usual awry hair and goatee looking slick and neat. He sings great, only it's not the Skynard the judges are used to.
And when they get to the judges, the first thing they point out is how the song choice was "outside his box." Or it wasn't "him."
That's how I view this.
The devs have tried something different with epic powers in CoV and ultimately with CoV as a whole. And the judges are screaming "Get back in your box," "Don't take a chance," or "We only like you when you are doing the same old thing."
Not all concepts in CoH can be realized with epic pools either. A rad/rad defender is pretty screwed. Or an illusion controller. A spines scrapper won't get some ultimate spine powers at the end of the game.
Ultimately, I think being given power from someone else is a much more rational explanation for these new powers at level 41 than just "You hit level 41, now your fire blaster can use electricity" or "You hit 41 and now, and only now, your scrapper has learned how to throw throwing stars even though Tsoo have been doing it since level 13." I would love if they adapted the "Patron" set-up for heroes and gave us a storyline or two that explain where we get these new epic powers and why they are important to our characters. Right now they aren't anymore important than the Fitness or Speed pool. -
Positron, can we expect a mission in I7 for villains that takes place in Croatoa? Perhaps so some of us can finish off the Cap Buster badge?
-
[ QUOTE ]
Yeah, it was the one on Mayhem Missions that I read last. Left me feeling "Meh". We've seen a lot of that info before.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, we've seen a LOT of Posi interviews based on them, though. The common player who only reads the main CoH page most likely hasn't. So it was just a means to catch them up a bit. -
Would a QA really tame the masses? Because a lot of people seem to be pissed that so much info has been released, as if the devs are doing it on purpose to make us jealous.
As for Alexa's stuff, I wouldn't call anything but maybe the Mayhem Mission one fluff. Knowing what powers are in the new powersets and Patron Pools definitely wasn't fluff. -
While I was on my vacation, Mime Control dinged 50, making him my 4th level 50.
New record time for him, too, at 280 hours thanks to containment and the fact that I could easily solo on invincible starting at level 18. -

Wow.
I am completely dissappointed by all those powers.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well... what exactly were you expecting to get?
[/ QUOTE ]
So people expect to get disappointed by everything, Sally.
It's an internet forum. What's it good for if not for posting porn and complaining? -
[ QUOTE ]
Nice to hear your basically forced to read it before you choose the Patron stuff. Makes people less likely to wine..then again, everyone wines about something
[/ QUOTE ]
Silly Link, now people will whine about being forced to go read the plaques as a mission... -
[ QUOTE ]
No was not thinking of that at all. Who would be the best person to ask?
[/ QUOTE ]
_Castle_ or Positron -
[ QUOTE ]
I just PM'ed CuppaJo and ask in what way the in game hard number for the PP's will be represented
here is the response
[ QUOTE ]
No idea - haven't seen it yet.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't like the sound of that
[/ QUOTE ]
You do realize that Cuppa works for NC Soft, not Cryptic, right?
She's not even in the same state as Cryptic and their QA team working on I7... -
Pinnacle had a Kronos Titan in the Hami Jelly during a hold phase once.
-
I can confirm that, while it takes a lot of work, you can get Kronos in Siren's.
As for Babbage, I'd like to see a test done for Babbage vs. Kraken. Or perhaps Babbage vs. Skyway-level Winter Lord.
Also: Jurassik vs. Jack in Irons. Adamaster vs. Eochai. -
[ QUOTE ]
This thread is barely 24 hrs old and is already 34 pages long......you'd think this would send a message to the devs.
[/ QUOTE ]
That some people like to talk? Who knew... -
Have I responded to everyone questioning this action and called them whiners, Revolver?
No. Because you are the only one whining here. Instead of going, "Hm, that seems like a bad idea and here are several good reasons why" you instantly dove headfirst into hyperbole and swearing. Good for you. You have now undermined your own point.
We get it, Revolver. You know it all. You know what's best for the game. If we don't agree with you, we're all dev asskissing fanboys. -
Clint, just because you've learned to embrace and bathe in the hyperbole and doomwhining doesn't mean everyone has to condone it, too.
Yes, Revolver freaking the hell out as if this were written in stone and will never change without knowing anything other than 1 Positron post is going overboard. When it was first announced that capes weren't going to be available until level 20, we had people posting the exact same thing. "OMG, BAD GAME DESIGN!" and "THE DEVS DROPPED THE BALL!"
Yet... capes hit at level 20 and no one cares about it anymore.
I'm sorry I'm not freaking out like a 3 year old about this, Clint. Maybe because it's everything I've been asking for for months: epic power pools that actually MEAN something. I'd gladly give up the right to change epic power pools if it meant that they added a storyline reason why my elec blaster suddenly discovers he can freeze things in ice at level 41. Or that my mind controller can suddenly throw boulders.
But no, I'm not even just protesting Revolver's right to be a giant loudmouth. I read this thread and was disgusted, Clint. It's an entire thread of people acting like jagoffs, whether it's about lack of information about patron powers, the inability to change them, or even typos. Game balance, nerfs, devs, fanboys, trolls or not, I take exception to that as a forum reader. If you want to condone that because you suddenly find yourself at odds with the devs, that's your choice to make. -
Eh, I've made my point.
It's Revolver's soapbox from now on where he can armchair game design all he wants. -

Of course you don't - not really surprised.

I said I'm reserving judgement, not that the Devs can have my babies.

Like I said, I'm not surprised.

Anyone who disagrees with Revolver is a fanboi!!1111
OMG, THE DEVZ R RUINENG THIS GAME! EVERY1 QUIT FOR WOW! BAD GAME DESIGN!11111 -
[ QUOTE ]
Sorry Taser, but being one of the biggest Dev fanboys around makes your opinion mean very little to me. Grats.
[/ QUOTE ]
Notice I said nothing about being pro or against perm patron powers.
I am against people panicking at the drop of a hate for attention like you are doing here.
You really dropped the ball on this one, Revolver. You have proven my point: that we're regressing. That, given a tiny bit of information, anyone on this forum will freak out as if it's the end of the world. And you did. Just like everyone flipping out about capes at level 20. -
[ QUOTE ]
Being locked into a pool is just like being locked in to powers in this case. Make any excuse you want, but they messed up on this one - that's not up for argument as far as I'm concerned.
[/ QUOTE ]
I must say, congrats on making this thread the whiniest, most argumentive thread since capes were announced as being unlocked at 20.
The people yelling at Awry because of grammer... the people freaking out about powers we don't even know about yet... the people like Revolver here screaming their heads off about their opinion and then stomping their feet when people disagree with their off-the-mark first reactions.
It's exactly like people flipping out about capes. Or flipping out at the thought of having to hit level 50 to unlock Kheldians.
You would think that some of the people in this thread would learn to have patience and see how things actually pan out instead of acting like a 3 year old at the drop of some preview info.
You would be wrong, though. -
[ QUOTE ]
o.o sides, I didn't say get the accolades, I said we'd be spending a week or two figuring out what give what ^^;; if you recall the i6 gladitorials.. that took a month to figure out?
[/ QUOTE ]
For the most part, we had all of the working gladiators organized in a week or two. What threw a spanner in the works were the dozen or so gladiators that weren't working at the time that Recluse fixed. -
[ QUOTE ]
Will the new Accolades Hurt Badges like the current ones do?
IE damage taken and HPS healed in the "Accolade bonus" HPs never get counted??
[/ QUOTE ]
Has this ever been proven as anything more than an urban legend?
But, yeah, accolades in I7 are going to be so much easier to figure out how to unlock than CoH's in I2 were. For one, we've had months to amass our badge collections to the point of some of us almost having all the epic badges already. And, two, we pretty much know what to expect.
I think figuring out what unlocks everything will be just as easy as figuring out what badges/actions unlock gladiators. It might take us a week or two, but we'll get it done. -
The gender-specific change to Man in Black was also suggested on the forums for female characters who didn't like being called men.
