  5. Hi Everyone!

So, in part 2 of Freitag's Movie Review Madness (yes, I just made that up!), I watched Back to the Future Part 1 last night!

This movie was laden with improbabilities, time stream pollution, and carelessness on the part of the main character! Does he have any concept of chaos theory, the butterfly effect, and so on!? The temporal prime directive was violated no less than 18 times, making him a worse offender than ..

oh wait, who am I kidding?

This movie was AWESOME! I really loved it. It was much better than I expected it to be, I laughed a lot, and there were twists I totally didn't see coming. The running gags were great (life-preserver, muahaha), and it was great to see everything end up on a positive note at the end!

One thing that struck me in particular was that it seems like Marty is in a stable relationship, which seems to be less and less common in movies these days. In general, characters (well, maybe not Biff [Side-Note, this is the first time I've seen someone named Biff since the Hardy Boys, and it's awesome!], but most people!) seemed a bit more mature, although Lorraine was a bit ... creepy T_T.

Anyway, I will watch number II and III in due time, but next up is Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure! I've always been a fan of Keanu Reeves (yup, I said it!), so this should be a treat!

On account of a rather strict upbringing, I was not allowed to watch movies or much TV (we didn't have one). The occasional bit of TV I did catch was usually at friends houses or at Gra'ma's house (and that was very carefully monitored).

By the time I was 10, I began to rebel, and watched as much on HBO as I could on summer vacations (spent with Dad... in another state).

I was 12-ish before I saw my first movie in the theatres.... Cujo, of all things. My second movie was Raiders of the Lost Ark.

In any case, despite my newfound addiction to TV, and eventually getting a BFA in theatre (which included classes on movie history); I never really got into the habit of going to the movie theatres. So there are still many gaps to fill.

But Freitag, you've got me beat. lol

Here are a few, dredged from memories of rebelliously sitting in front of the TV, watching HBO... (forgive me if they've been mentioned already)

    The Dark Crystal
    NeverEnding Story
    Muppet Movie
    Risky Business
    Legend
    Victor Victoria
    Conan (Arnold's original)
    Krull
    Red Sonja
    Secret of NIMH

Just a few, not all necessarily awesome, but I've seen lots others already listed... lots of good stuff to choose from.

    Good luck on this endeavor.

    .
I really liked NeverEnding Story. Dark Crystal was okay, but didn't grab me. The other movies you've listed I have not seen, although I really want to see Conan. Secret of NIMH is related to the book about the rats of nimh, I'm assuming? Those books were fun!

I think I saw part of a LotR animated movie once ... they were in Moria, and I remember thinking it looked stupid (I was fairly young at the time). I'll take a look though!

  12. Hi everyone!

How appropriately timed Bubbawheat! I just got done watching Conan the Barbarian, from 1982 starring the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger. I'd wanted to see it for a while, but now I've seen it in full, and I have come to report!

This was definitely a fun movie. I didn't think Arnold could give speeches that long! I'm just kidding ;-). But this movie definitely had among the least amount of dialogue I've ever seen in a movie. It makes up for it with fairly impressive visuals, as well as copious amounts of fanservice. They sure made movies differently back then! I had heard the primary quotable line from the movie already:

But it was nice to see it in the context of the entire movie.

Overall, I give this an 8/10. While the dialogue wasn't the strongest in the world, the epic nature of the film, and the loads of action, definitely made this worth watching.

Next up? I think Zwillinger will start shooting me with a nerf gun if I don't watch Back to the Future, so part I of that series is up next!

I think this is probably a fairly common sentiment, perhaps just not among this crowd ;-). I remember when I was younger a lot of people echo'd the sentiment that they preferred the Hobbit to the LotR series.

The Lost Boys (the vampires don't eat either Corey, but its still a good movie) There was a short story by Orson Scott Card called this, no? I can't remember. Anyway, is the movie related to the story? I haven't seen it.

Absence of Malice (Paul Newman, Sally Field, Bob Balaban, and great end piece with Wilford Brimley) Somehow this rings a bell, but I don't think I've seen it.

And since people are tossing in movies outside the period, I'm going to stump for The Bestest Comedy of All Time Ever, Murder by Death. Never heard of it either =(.

Hey :-P! Well, okay, I guess I don't watch that many movies compared to you guys, but think about what a lack of television would have done to your movie-watching experiences over a lifetime! I think I have pretty good taste in movies, but every now and then I watch some bad movies just for the sheer enjoyment factor.

Terminator 2 (in my opinion, one of the best action movies ever) I'm inclined to agree with you. Great movie!

The Silence of the Lambs (seriously, does any comic book fan *not* think of Bullseye's escape from prison during Miller's run at the end of this movie?) Haven't seen it.

Schindler's List (must see, period) Nor this!

And since someone mentioned shorts, I guess I'll toss up the Spirit of Christmas, which I remember spending three days downloading the 50meg quicktime version of back when it was originally circulating around. Doesn't ring a bell either. I remember spending 3 days downloading a game demo on dial-up when I was younger. Afterwards, I told my parents about it, and they were all "Gosh, it was nice not getting phone calls for a few days!

Here's a question... It may seem kinda rude, but it's not meant as such... It seems you are lacking in a lot of cultural knowledge and this tends to indicate someone who doesn't associate with people and definitely not a group that would be considered nerds/geeks... Why would ever go for the position of Moderator? As I would argue that someone that doesn't have an understanding of such things might not be a good choice for that position...

Again, not trying to be rude... just curious >.>
There are many different kinds of what you call "nerds/geeks", and I'm just one kind of geek that hasn't seen movies. I've read, watched and done lots of things that I think make me quite the geek .... but don't tell anyone! shhhh... :-P
