Quote:Always happy to see and help new players. Be aware tho that Trial Accounts have some restrictions on them. They were being abused by RMT sites. Thanks guys, I am anxious to try it. I am embarrassed to say that I hadn't even broken the seal on the box, until today.
Thanks for the ideas on installing the game. I think that makes sense, to download it, sample the game for a few days, then use the activation code.
And thanks also for the warm welcome!!
Ironblade has a great link in his signature for the Mentors Project which is a group of players that help new people out on any server with learning the game. You'll have to wait until you activate your account before you can join due to the trail account restrictions.
Let's see . . . Another thing you should know is that the current trial accounts let you get a look at what's happening in Praetoria. (The first character you make must be a Praetorian. After you make it tho you can immediately make a hero or villain) That's the new Going Rogue expansion. However if you use an old code to activate your account you won't have access to Praetorian content. You have to buy Going Rogue.Quote:Restrictions
Trial Accounts cannot email other players
Trial Accounts may not level past 14
Trial Accounts can only have 50k inf
Trial Accounts may not join global channels
Trial Accounts can only speak in
/local
/hc (the Help channel)
/team
Trial Accounts cannot invite players to team
Trial Accounts may join teams, but not invite other players
Trial Accounts may not join SuperGroups.
Trial Accounts may not create Mission Architect arcs. They can not interface with the Architect Entertainment Stations. However, they can be invited onto a team that is running MA missions.
Oh also if you don't know already, the most populated servers are Freedom and Virtue. (Assuming you're making a North American account as opposed to European) Some of the other servers seem very quiet because of the lower populations and the fact that this game is heavily instanced. Meaning most of the time people are inside missions. You won't see them unless they are going to missions, leveling up, using the market. So you might want to think about starting out on a higher pop server and if you decide you prefer a quieter setting create new characters on one of the lower pop servers.
Hope I haven't confused you too much.

As others have said as long as the code has never been used before (and you haven't activated another code from the same edition on an account. For example you can only add CoV once to an account. You can't add codes from two or more CoV copies in hopes of getting the free months) you can use it to activate or upgrade your account.

Old system
AMD Phenom Q9600 Quad Core Processor, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS 512MB (video card died in December), Power supply 580
New system I'm looking at
I have the choice of
I3 540
I5 650
I5 655
I5 660
I5 680
I5 760
I7 870
4 GB RAM (Minimum), 1 TB Hard Drive, Power Supply at least 600 depending on mem and video card.
And I'm not willing to go less than an
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1 GB
If the If the I3 or I5 cores are sufficient it will give me more wiggle room to get a nicer video card and more memory with the new system.
Upgrading the old system will take too long. Family offered me a solution of getting a new system on their credit card and letting me pay it off (they'll buy my current system and I'll pay them back the remaining balance) vs having to save up for months (I'm on a fixed income and can only put aside so much at a time)

This is what I was given in a previous thread where I aske da similar question.
Quote:
To run all Ultra Mode options at once in 1680*1050 the starting point is around a AMD RadeonHD 4850 / Nvidia Geforce GTS 250. These have the respective theoretical throughput rates of
10,000 MegaPixel / 25,000 Megatexel
11,808 MegaPixel / 47,232 Megatexel
For the AMD architecture then, cards that will run Ultra Mode include:
RadeonHD 4770
RadeonHD 4850
RadeonHD 4850x2
RadeonHD 4860
RadeonHD 4870
RadeonHD 4870x2
RadeonHD 4890
RadeonHD 5750
Radeon HD 5770 1GB
RadeonHD 5830
RadeonHD 5850
RadeonHD 5870
RadeonHD 5970
RadeonHD 6850
RadeonHD 6870
RadeonHD 6950
RadeonHD 6970
For the Nvidia architecture these include:
8800 GTS*
8800 GTX*
8800 Ultra*
9800 GTX
9800 GTX+
9800 GX2
GTS 240
GTS 250
GTX 260
GTX 260 216
GTX 275
GTX 280
GTX 285
GTX 295
GTS 450
GTX 460
GTX 460 SE
GTX 465
GTX 470
GTX 480
GTX 570
GTX 580
*the Geforce 8800 series has the shader and texture power to execute Ultra Mode Code, but memory counts of 256mb and 512mb of local video memory really cuts into the ability of the cards to render Ultra Mode in high resolutions
The list of mobile cards that can render in ultra mode is significant shorter:
Mobile RadeonHD 4850
Mobile RadeonHD 4850x2
Mobile RadeonHD 4860
Mobile RadeonHD 4870
Mobile RadeonHD 4870x2
Mobile RadeonHD 5830
Mobile RadeonHD 5850 GGD5
Mobile RadeonHD 5870
9800M GTS
9800M GT
9800M GTX
Quadro FX 3700M
Quadro FX 3800M
GTX 260M
GTX 280M
GTX 285M
GTX 460M
GTX 470M
GTX 480M
Now, I have the well publicized opinion that most of the Geforce cards are rip-offs. Outside of the Geforce GTX 460, pretty much the entire street price for Nvidia cards are way over-priced compared to AMD cards with similar frame-per-second performance: http://www.pricewatch.com/video_cards/
Case in point: Nvidia wants $500 for the GTX 580. However, in realistic gameplay, the $500 msrp GTX 580 doesn't actually buy you higher resolutions, more anti-aliasing, or better texture quality... compared to a RadeonHD 6970 with an MSRP of $369, and a street price only a few bucks more. So... what are you spending nearly $125+ for? Best as I can figure, a little badge that says Nvidia.
One of the problems with my opinion is that Nvidia offers huge discounts to OEM vendors in order to keep system price parity with AMD offerings. So, if you are buying a pre-built computer from a major OEM like Dell, HP, or Gateway, their computers won't have the price / performance discrepancy you'll find in the add-in card market.
So it's very possible that you'll find one of the card listed here available in a pre-built system for not much off an equivelent AMD card.
-
if I should get the basic processor that comes with the one I'm looking at. My current system has an AMD Phenom Q9600 Quad Core Processor, but I'm looking at a system that has an Intel I3 540 processor and I don't know enough tech to know if the I3 is better.
If the I3 isn't as good as the AMD Phenom I can afford to kick it up to an I5 650 or a 655k, and maybe even an I7-2600 (If I get a lucky break financially) but budget constraints will force me to sacrifice memory to the minimum needed to run CoH.
Any opinions will be appreciated. -
I just watched the movie and I think I'm going nutz. Every so often I understand what they're saying.

Maybe that's why his movies suck. He's doing them in English. I'll have to test this theory by seeing copies of his films done in foreign languages to see if that helps make them better. -
Quote:Not trying to be argumentative but the free transfers only happened twice within the past year because of GR, so they can't really be said to be given out whenever content changes make them desirable.Yeah, I could see that.
Could also help them having to come up with ever-yet-another-vet-travelling-power.
Aside from that, free transfers and free respecs are given to us very conveniently whenever content changes make them highly desirable, so we really should be happy.
I wish it were true.

Quote:Great idea! That would serve the same purpose as a "quiet room" and on the off chance some rude twit of an SGmate starts acting the fool in the base when you're using the market terminal you can have the satisfaction of booting his punk *** out of the SG.So instead of griping at each other, how about:
- Push for an earnable/purchasable (other than the vet reward) auction house temp power, and/or
- have them actually look at bases for the first time in who knows how long and add an auction house terminal item there.
(I'm basing my comments from the perspective that I'm the ranking officer in all my SG's) -
Currently you can't go back, and there isn't any content over 20 in Praetoria at this time.

Quote:Yes seriously. If there weren't idiots out there willing to do this the RMT sites wouldn't exist.Hundreds of dollars for temporary vet status? Seriously? I don't see that a few benefits that aren't applied permanently would be worth that much. But hey, I'm not a gold farmer, so maybe a couple of temp powers and costume pieces are worth three figures. Sounds silly, but what do I know.
Here's an example which I saw happen in another MMO. This happened during the games open beta testing before the game launched, and everyone in the beta knew that when the game launched the server was going to be erased and we would all start from scratch with new characters.
Now even in the Open Beta the game already had RMT sites spamming their services. There was a lot of snide remarks and laughter at the idea of anyone being stupid enough to use an RMT site especially when we all knew that the servers were getting erased the day before launch.
Lo and behold one schmuck did it. We know he did because the RMT site stole his forum account and used it to spam the forums and got his account banned. The schmuck was a guy that had been "bragging" on the forums about buying 4 or 5 copies of the game in order to get the best of the different pre-order perks as well as a lifetime subscription.
The copies of the game ran between $50 to $79 bucks from the various retailers and the Lifetime Sub ran $250. So when the schmuck got banned a week before the game launched for using an RMT site he threw away around $600 dollars for a game he never got to play.
Want another example? There's a guy that spent $300,000 dollars to buy a virtual space station in another game. Can't say the name here on the forums but you can google the story and get several articles.
You and I and many others here may have the common sense not to go near RMT sites but that leaves plenty of morons who do. -
Quote:I was thinking they could just add a room next to the market locations. Say a manhole cover at the BM's that go to an underground "quiet" room redside, and adding a door inside the Wents blueside.Interesting. I also don't care for having to retoggle after visiting the Praet. trading house. It's annoying and not really much fun. I also agree that it's OK to make a quick stop sometimes with everything running, I do it often myself.
However I do empathize somewhat with folks who don't care for people "rocking the aura" constantly at the various auction houses.
May I propose a compromise?
Take *some* of the auction houses and add power suppression. Leave others alone for those who want to make a "quick stop" or who don't care about auras and such like.
For example, Talos and Atlas Park are traditionally more busy because of all the traffic in those zones. Leave those alone for "quick stops." Add power suppression to the WW in Steel Canyon and King's Row. SC is close to the University, so it's quiet for folks who are actually crafting. KR is ... well no reason, just trying to split it 50/50.
Same with Black Market. Leave the BM in Mercy and Cap alone. Cap is the main "grand central station" redside. And for crafting I know there's an Abandoned Lab close to St. Martinal BM, I use it often. So the the BM in St. Mart could be used by people who what peace and quiet and want to actually craft. Sharkhead BM is ... again just Shark. Trying to split things 50/50 again.
Just a thought.... -
Yes actually they should. All they have to do is add a "quiet room" like the AE buildings have. Then the players that want can choose to do their transactions there and the ignorant louts can go suck eggs in the regular section of the market.
-
/unsigned.
This would destroy game balance. Imagine a team of 8 Fire/Kins each with 4 clones. That would be 40 Fire/Kins. 8 players plus 32 clones. -
Quote:/unsigned.I have often noticed that the solution to "I don't have enough character slots" is "get a second account". and in many other games, this is a grand idea. But it's not as feasible for CoX. Veteran rewards, while not important individually, drastically alter the game as your account ages.
I'm in over the six year mark, and there's no way I could play the game from scratch again. The game at 0 months and at 75 months is so vastly different as to practically be a different game. So here's the suggestion:
Allow an account to be linked with another account registered to the same person on the same credit card. The linked account would then share the benefits of the main account. Veteran rewards are granted to players, why should it matter that one of the accounts (of two that both belong to me) was created years later? In fact, I'd say it speaks more to my customer loyalty that I have a second account.
This wouldn't give anyone an advantage that they don't already have. People would still have to pay for a second account. Include a $10 "Link charge" to actually link the two accounts. If the main account drops at any time, the secondary account loses all access to rewards gained from the link (but none from time that the account has actually been active). If either account drop at any time, then relinking costs another $10 fee.
Thoughts?
If this was implemented RMT sites will then be able to sell instant vet accounts to people. Simply "create" a new account and link it to get the vet status and then sell the login and password to some schmuck for hundreds of dollars.
And RMT sites don't care if their "customers" get screwed on the deal. They will most likely already be fraudulently using the morons credit card info.
Furthermore the customers that get screwed on the deals won't be blaming the RMT sites, because that would mean admitting they were doing something stupid and wrong. Instead they'll play the innocent victim and paint CoH as the bad guys which will drive away potential customers. -

The subject at hand: Vehicles.
Vehicles as travel powers. This gets brought up a lot.
Short answer, don't expect it.
Long answer:
There are a lot of problems with the idea.
1. Movement.
Forward and back, even turning - ok. But you can do things that a vehicle can't - such as strafe (direct side to side or angular movement.) It doesn't work with a vehicle. There are also issues such as drift and "realistic" handling. We can go side to side, as mentioned, and make immediate right angle turns. Cars... not so much.
2. Movement, part 2.
Go stand in the road. No, not you personally. Take your character out and stand in the road, if you're heroside. Or even in the path of civilians. What happens? You get pushed. While not as big an issue with a motorcycle, perhaps, a car would have issues. What happens if two cars meet head on - yours and an NPC, or yours and another player's? Do you just pass through each other? Would you be satisfied with that very odd result? Or would you get stuck? How about those NPCs, can they walk and push your car, or are they walking through it? Neither answer is very satisfying, and intelligent, dynamic pathing is too computationally expensive.
3. Terrain.
Not every place has roads, or even makes sense for "off roading." Go look at Founder's Falls. Go look at Crey's Folley. Or Eden. Try to get to the north islands in Talos. What, do you have a kubelwagen? Look at the Pit in Sharkshead. Try to use your travel power (car) to get up to some of the doorways in high caves. Cars and motorcycles would be more like Superspeed - horizontal movement, period. And look - I'll be blunt - flat out *stupid* tied with, say, Combat Jumping or Superjump.
4. Combat.
You get ambushed on the way. How do you fight? Just have your powers blast out of the rolled up windows? How do you buff or debuff? EVERY power would need a new animation. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Then you want people with motorcycles instead of cars. Redo ALL the animations AGAIN. And they still wouldn't make sense - how do you use Footstomp in a car? Or Stalagmites?
5. Customizing.
Yeah, it would come up. Not everyone would want a sports car, or a mid-70s Buick boat, or an exotic, or a minivan, or whatever else.
6. Making "sense."
This was touched on in terrain - how do you get across water? How about the Shadow Shard? And if you want downright ridiculous looking, go do the heroside 25-34 Respec. Look at the Sky Skiffs inside of rooms or the reactor room. It makes no sense and looks *ridiculous.* Something that, yes, the devs try to avoid.
That's just a quick overview of why vehicles as generally envisioned aren't a spectacular idea for a travel power.
Further discussion
This I think merits a bit of extra commentary, honestly.
"Vehicles" covers a lot of different ground for different people. Some only consider cars/jets/motorcycles vehicles. Others add jetpacks, wings and the like. Much of the above considers cars and similar sized vehicles, with nods to motorcycle type vehicles.
Jetpacks and such, I don't see happening as travel powers. As costume options for Flight? Or as invented pieces that interact with Fly, similar to wings? Absolutely - but they don't need to be a separate travel power for that. I'm all for more jetpack and wing (or combination) designs. Besides, there are so many "temp" jetpacks, I don't see introducing yet another one as really being feasable - just my opinion.
But vehicles - cars, specifically - as a travel power, have issues.
One way to have them "somewhat" work.
For all that, I know some people *would* still like to pull up in front of a mission. So how do we do it?
A temporary power, based on the same tech from the Mac/Valkyrie pack Mission Teleporter. The temporary power would:
(a) be an invention - dropping from enemies. (A reward, because you saved... well, we'll get to that,)
(b) be a single use each time - you can only hold one at a time, not one of each, one total.
(c) use rarely used salvage, because... it's rarely used, and cheap. No Luck Charms here.
(d) come in multiple varieties.
How does this get around the various issues?
Terrain - It doesn't pass terrain. It just arrives.
It follows the same 'rules' as the mission teleporter - it's not indoors, doesn't go to contacts, etc. Just mission doors.
Customizing - It's not "your" vehicle. It's a temp power. You've called a cab, limo, or other transport.
Power animation - since you're skipping the space in between, no powers can be used 'til you arrive anyway.
The varieties?
- Limo: Stereotypical slightly stretched black limo.
- Checker cab: The classic yellow cab. -
Quote:1. /signedOkay, rather than be negative I'll try to come up with things that would make me support a base overhaul.
1) Storage Revamp. Instead of individual 'outlets' we get a vault, with organized tabs. To increase storage we would still purchase more storage space with prestige, but everything could be stored in a single vault, with tabs, with different permissions available for each tab.
2) Base raids available again. This was a fun feature and I would love to see it back in the game.
3) Multiple floors/Z-axis support.
4) Support for more varied room templates so people could have bases similar to underground Council bases, or Longbow Submarine Bases, etc.
5) The option to retain what we have or convert to the new system.

Quote:I would guess by regular invites. With a new system they may even include the ability to send invite to characters offline. What happens to the roster? How do you move members from one base to the other?
If they are willing to start over then the name should be freed up when the old base is disbanded. That's assuming that the new base system will check the old naming system. They could start over from scratch with a blank template for the new system.Quote:What if someone wants to start a new base, but use their "old" SG name?
If it's an active coalition reforming shouldn't be a problemQuote:What happens to coalitions?
I'd like an option that lets leaders choose if their base will participate or not. Raid bases follow pathing rules and nonraid bases don't.Quote:What about re-instituting raids?
This assumes that new bases will even need to earn SG Badges. If they do I don't have an answer.Quote:What happens to the Group badges?
I would assume the Super Leader since according to the devs he/she is the defacto owner.Quote:What if someone wants to keep their old base, as some have mentioned, in a locked/museum state? Who gets access or leadership to the museum? -
Quote:Pretty much agree with you except I can see some limited crafting and storage. Maybe craft just basic IO's. I can see heros doing minor tweaks and improvements to stuff in the privacy of their secret lair.I think the idea is to have something like this alongside bases...
To that end, I would say scrap the "secret lair" part, and just make the link to an SG that the toon belongs to.
While we do want people to get involved in the creative process of building, we also want people to join SG's, not alienate themselves from them. SG's need to be made viable again.
To make the personal apartment appealing, include the costume & trophy display, and I think one salvage rack could be allowed there... but no enhancies, crafting, or TPs.
.
As for storage maybe 1 salvage rack or just Vault access, and bins with reduced amounts for Enhancements and Inspirations. Say 10 each max.
TP's? Only to the SG base if they are a member of one.
