  1. Thanks for that list! I do have a question though...one day I typed /em bow, and instead of bowing, my character shot a bow and arrow! I only was able to do it that day, and I haven't seen it since...has anyone else seen that one or know how to get it?
  2. Could someone post the final versions of the binds so I don't have to go through 26 pages to look for them, please?

    Thanks!
  3. These more recent binds require knowing what "Mode" you're in, Stimpy, so you'd have to make sure you weren't moving when you toggled between running/flying. If you don't mind that, then just change the "standing still on the ground" file to normal movements (+forward, +backward etc) for all movement keys, but leave the fly key the way it is, and it should work ok. The ground file is norun.txt in Ahzurdan's, or ground.txt in Wasabi Joe's, or G.txt in my most recent binds (if you can DL them).

Just curious, but is there some reason you don't want to auto-sprint on the ground?

    Question:
Does anybody know, for sure, if starting a bind with $$ causes problems? I'm adding code to make follow binds, and it'd simplify the logic if I knew I didn't have to worry about leading $$s. Unfortunately, I didn't think to test it this weekend.

  5. Dang, I tried to download them, and had problems too. Yesterday when I linked them, I tested the links as far as the "Save As..." box, but then hit cancel.

Beyond making sure you can connect (ping etc) and verifying that the links are correct, anybody have any ideas for fixing this?

Okay its longer to type but for the completeness of your list

You can also use ; instead of /em for any emote.

So ;hi instead of /em hi
  7. I was a lost soul, wondering though the back alleys of New York, scavenging what food I could from garbage or killing small animals. I know nothing about my past prior to this miserable existence. Even my name is unknown to me. An outcast from society, my tough, scaly skin marking me as a shockingly different mutant for all to see. My mutation causes bone growths to shoot randomly though my skin, causing me intense pain each and every time. My life may have continued along this miserable course if it were not for a twist of fate, which resulted in me learning to control my powers and finally gaining a name. My name would be Necrocide.

I was tearing into rat I had just caught, I hadn’t eaten in days. This war with the strange creatures that appeared out of holes in the very air had caused many to flee the city, taking their food with them. I cared little about the war, humanity has shown me no compassion, why should I care who won. Either way I was likely to remain living off others scraps.

A loud crashing sound made me look up as a brightly coloured blur crashed into a nearby rubbish heap. I recognised it as one of the warriors I’d had seen fighting the invaders. Before the war they’d also occasionally come running though my alleys chasing local thugs, never even noticing me as they ran past. While the warrior lay there groaning one of the armoured invaders appeared next to him. As it towered over its beaten pray it emitted a sound that could only be laughter. From somewhere deep inside me, from whatever dregs of humanity were left after a life of banishment, I felt an anger rise towards the invader. It was about to kill someone who was already no threat to it, and it was clearly enjoying it. It was too much for me, I leapt from the shadows towards the back of the laughing murderer. I harboured no delusions about how successful I expected my attack to be. It might distract the attacker long enough for the brightly coloured warrior to escape, but nothing more. Maybe if I was lucky the invader would kill me.

As I travelled though the air, time seemed to slow down. My arm was pulled back ready to deliver the blow as soon as I landed. My target was beginning to raise its weapon; its helpless pray lifted its hands protectively to its face. I felt a familiar pain in my arm as one of my bone protrusions quickly extended from it. Time returned in a rush, suddenly I was swinging my punch, the bone turning my arm into a deadly spear.

It was over, the invader hung lifelessly from my outstreched arm, my extended bone protruding from it chest. As bone slid back into my arm the creature fell to the floor, for the first time in my life my mutant power had helped me! As I turned to leave I heard a call from behind me.

‘Wait! I owe you my life’. I looked around to see the person I had saved climbing to his feet. ‘Those bones, we’ve seen others with the same mutation; they’ve very painful aren’t they? We can help you, train you to control them’. Considering his offer I said ‘Why would you want to help me?’. ‘You saved my life’ he replied, finally managing to stand, ‘And I see great potential in you, you could become a powerful hero’. So, these coloured warriors call themselves heroes? Why should I help the world that has shunned me? However the lure of learning to control my powers, to control the pain, was strong (and some where, nagging at the back of my mind, was the thought that maybe I could stop other mutants suffering as I had). So I accepted his offer.

I was assigned the code name 'Necrocide', a dark name to match my dark nature. However, I saw little combat during the war with the Rikti (as I later found out these invaders were called), my training wasn't complete until the war was almost over. I was useless in a fight if I couldn't control my powers.

I trained long and hard, I learnt to lock out the pain caused by my powers using meditation techniques. My natural speed and agility allowed me to become a very skilled close quarter’s fighter. During one of the few battles I did see during the war a shot from a Rikti energy weapon caught the side of my face, ruining my right eye and scaring my face. I was fitted with a cybernetic eye to replace the one I had lost and used a leather mask to hide my scared face.

After the war, my training complete, I left mentors. Many heroes who's powers came from their mutations fought in the war, gaining public acceptance for our kind. I could now walk the streets without causing cries of fear and disgust. I was no longer the empty husk I had been. I had a purpose, I had a name, I was a hero! Like so many other heroes of the time, I decided to answer the call of Paragon City and a new phase of my life began.

monkeys are a loophole? Since when? Its not like im using some obviously broken power like pre-patch burn or caltrops. Im using frost breath. I had to 5 slot it to do any decent damage

Are you saying monkeys are supposed to be harder?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Boy are you going to be in for a rude awakening.

Underlings were giving Minion exp with having much much less health and defenses. As a result, they were easily farmable exp by pretty much anybody with an AoE attack. So no, no obviously broken power, you're just killing obviously broken mobs.

Go copy your character to test and play with your precious monkeys. The exp is about 1/10th of what it used to be.
  9. agree with everything but that dark pit is useless for us
you get it much earlier, enhanced it is quite reliable vs minions refreshes fast(45secs i think) and you're like a ghetto controller in teams without a real one
it also helps soloing packs of minions at higher lvls with TT and nightfall...

but all in all great guide deserves some stars
  10. This is an awsome post. I just read it and I have a level 16 Rad/dark defender and I have to agree with everything I have read. I wish I read it sooner,Im afraid I have made some mistakes in my slotting but my charater is still doable.

p.s. its 2:30 in the morning and even on good days I cant spell worth my weight in gold
  11. The only time grabbing a blinky matters is when they give temp powers. And at that point its best for owner to NOT get it. Polygonpon and me think we figured out a bug. He grabbed a temp power in a blinky on my mission, it did not have a certain numer of uses before it ran out. I got the other "blinky". When I turned in mission like normal I lost my temp power but polgonpon kept his. I figured it would run out in an hour but the next day he still had his @_@. So now he basicly has invisibility.

That was last week dont know if he still has the temp or not.

  13. Ok, here are the files. They come in 3 different flavors, but I've included the BASIC file with each which can be modified and used to make the keys and directory path anything you want (instructions further down in this post).

Warning: These seem like VERY solid binds to me, but I'm the only tester to date, and this is my first attempt, so I foresee problems and bugs. There are also things I'll add over the next few days, like a reset to normal key, and follow modes. So, if you're not one of those reading this post who enjoys hashing out all the problems, then you might just want to wait. There will be a more finished product soon.

Also there is a Readme.txt file with more detailed instructions. But to get you started, Unzip them to your C:\ drive which will put them in C:\coh and create subdirectories Ground, Air, Autorun, and Autofly. Then just link them from the game with:
    /bind_load_file c:\coh\ground\g.txt

Ok, this first file is the setup I think most people use. It uses WADS for movement, Space for Up, X for down, R for autorun/fly, and F to toggle between run and fly modes.

    WADS with toggle for Run/Fly

The next one uses ESDF for directions, Space for up, and B for down (thumbable). G is the toggle for Air and Ground.

    ESDF with Toggle for Run/Fly

The last is my setup. It uses ESDF for directions, Space for Up, B for down. But, it uses G to put you in Ground mode, and T to put you in air mode. If you're already IN the mode for the key you press, that key acts as a reset, resetting sprint, hover, fly and all the directional movements.

ESDF with separate Run and Fly keys

If you want to change the keys to EXACTLY what you want, in the directories you want, then you'll want to use the BASIC file. Just download Liberty BASIC from www.download.com (or elsewhere) and run the .BAS file included with the binds. Liberty BASIC is shareware. You can not create executables, or run files that use more than 8k memory, but it's sufficient for this program and is simple and clean to install and run.

There are some variables in the beginning of the .bas file to set the keys you want for each movement, for setting fly, and for setting run (if you set the fly and run function to the same key, it'll toggle). Also there is a path variable which you can set to put the files wherever you want.

There are simple directions at the top of the BASIC File, but if you change the logic further down, you're on your own. Well, not exactly, just post here if you have problems and I'll help out. I also don't mind taking requests for modifications, if you don't know basic, but can't guarantee how much time I'll have for this.

So, enjoy your gaming and coding!

  14. Hi 3clipse,

Just type this from the game chat line:

    /bind f "powexec_name sprint$$powexec_name fly$$powexec_name hover"

This will make sure that Sprint is turned off (don't want to waste end, do we?) and turn on hover. Once hovering or flying it'll toggle between the two. You can change f to any key you'd like.

    Then type this:

    /bind lshift+f "powexec fly$$powexec hover$$powexec sprint$$powexec sprint"

This sets it so shift (only the left shift key) and F toggles both Hover and Fly OFF, and puts you back into ground mode with sprint on. Make sure you're NEAR the ground, or you'll hit it hard

For the rest of you, I'm working on getting the more complex binds up, but was busier this evening than I planned. Will have them up before tomorrow, though.

  15. This is certainly one of the most helpful single threads i have found since Ive started playing a blaster. Everyone's comments give a great well rounded look at just about everything, though I skipped some of the 20+ pages I have to admit.

The build recommended for the Assult Rifle/ Devices blaster was frighteningly close to what Ive chosen as a CASUAL PLAYER. I power-gamed myself to utter boredom with EQ and refuse to do so in this game. Simply my choice. As a result I am in my high teens only after 3 weeks (~10 hours a week).

Already I would have to disagree with the usefulness of Buckshot and M30 grenade for multiple targets. The knockdown and knockback effects on both of these make them excellent for pushing mobs back into caltrops and keeping them from attacking. I just dont understand how these wouldnt be useful in the end-game...(if you can answer with specifics and first hand experience that would be helpful indeed). I also am curious about Ignite, and whether I should bother with Sniper Rifle.

I was a little apprehensive about having putting so many powers into defence as a blaster. I may have done it too early in the game, but the original post still makes me feel that these werent wasted powers. Stealth, Combat Jumping, Hasten (have it slotted once with defence..prolly a waste I know). Its good to know that this will be an advantage in the longrun. I also took superspeed. Clearly a skill that I would never regret taking. Again people: Stealth + SS = increased def+increased speed+great invis. out of just 2 powers. Im hoping to avoid taking any higher forms of invis.

Last note about power gaming and the "I'll be there sooner!" approach: Especially in a new game like this, there is still alot changing...which will effect characters of all levels. All of the mid-level content will be just as entertaining (im guessing) as the high level. Since you cannot pass gear down (what uber gear is there?) and enhancements can only be used at the appropriate levels anyway...There is absolutely no point. It was one thing where, in EQ, you could throw a fungi tunic (regen item) on a character and run around practically invincible for the first 30 levels, but in this game, even if you hand yourself down some influence (or whatever) you wont be able to give your "twink" much benefit at all. I'm not opposed to true PLing at all and it is not an ethics issue for me : simply that to get more bang for your buck you might consider pacing yourself.

The original poster did not mention what he did with his character for fun now that hes level 40 and the rest of us arent. Though I guess I appreciate that he did it for the info he has "shared with the unenlightened masses". You really did answer most of my questions about my build...Thanks

  17. I two shotted a group of 8 red minions in Dark Astoria, and killed the purple LT with the remains of my buildup/aim time.

Why exactly do you need a guide to leveling with a fire blaster again?

Let me sum it up for you:

Find big groups of things that are around your lvl. Walk up with stealth on if you have it, hit buildup/aim, then do firebreath/fireball and toss yer flame bolt and blaze at anything left alive.

If there's stuff still left alive, run like crazy.

Woo hard. I'm 24 in 2 weeks, playing like... every other night for a couple of hours and an hour in the mornings when I can.

Kind of a difference from my scrapper who's 28 after around a month and a half of the same kind of playing.

Sorry for the confusion, but are you saying turn left/right DO work, but that you don't use them?

One question: Do any of these other approaches make it possible to hit a power, realize you are out of range, and start moving without deselecting the power? I have noticed that I can begin to move, then select a power and it works great. If only there were a way to pass the currently selected power to a bind.

Thanks for all the hard work.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Hi Jotun,

I'm using the turn keys just for the key down, key up functionality. All of these binds depend on the "+" commands so that the key runs it's associated bind BOTH when the key is pressed, AND released. Since the turn keys are not used much, and I wanted to use the explicit move keys, I used them to get that function without interfering with the forward/back/strafe movements. Not sure if turning left would still work, but I don't see why not once a key is pressed and held down. Movement might stop after you release a move key, even if your turn key is still held down. Need to check, I suppose. If it doesn't, I'm sure there is some other + command I could use that interfere's less. I'll have to experiment.

These binds, and I think the earlier ones, allowed you to activate powers IF YOU WERE ALREADY MOVING, which would then go off once you are in range. If you stop or start, however, they are cleared. Now that I'm used to it, I kinda like it that way as I don't attack anything by accident.

Thanks WeaponX and Wasabi Joe, for the disk space, and the info! I'll upload my stuff this evening.

"Is she going to be alright? What happened back there?"
  21. I was having some problems getting the functionality I wanted with the XYZ Axis setup. So I was leaning towards going back to my and Wasabi's original thought of different files for different key combos, but was horrified by the number of files. So, I decided to hit the problem over the head with a sledgehammer.

I wrote a BASIC program (downloaded Liberty BASIC for free from www.download.com) and wrote it up. So I have loops that go through ALL the combinations of 6 direction keypresses for ALL movement modes: Run, Fly, AutoRun, AutoFly. Haven't done follow yet, because I never use it in game, and don't really know it's ins and outs.

This setup allows me to ALWAYS keep track of what keys are pressed... I use +turnleft$$-turnleft to get the key activated on both press and release without affecting movement (I at least never use the turning keys, preferring mouselook). Also, since I ALWAYS know what keys are depressed, I explicitly set the movements, using "up 1$$down 0$$forward 1... etc for ALL 6 directions whenever a key is pressed.

This works, frankly, GREAT. The binds don't seem to break at all, that I've noticed, and I have hammered on lots of keys at the same time. Once I got the logic ironed out in the code, I can make changes very quickly to all 256 files, and rarely even look at the binds anymore, staying completely in basic while experimenting. And since all of these binds load a bind file each time you press or release a key, it's no slower than any of the others.

And since it's programmed, I can easily change the keys used, the directory path, etc. Also, it's not usually too hard to add functionality. For instance, in my Auto modes, I set the right mouse button to toggle mouselook on and off (++mouse_look), and then change it back to normal (mouselook while pressed) when I leave Auto.

I need a place to put this though... Could somebody who earlier provided web space for Wasabi lend me some, and tell me how to upload? I know how to FTP, of course, if that's the way you guys did it, but I'd need a username/password. I'll release both zips of different combinations of binds for those of you just interested in using these, as well as the basic code so you all can modify and such to your heart's content.

I still need to add functionality for follow, both while flying and running, but won't have time until Monday.

So, if somebody can lend me the web space, thanks.

  22. is there any way to bind a key to exec that script everytime you load the game?

for me, and my brother we have to both reload the script every so often because it stops working correctly

we tried to bind a key P to this

    /bind p "/bind_load_file c:\coh\binds\run\norun.txt"
but it wouldnt allow that, so i have p bound to
    /bind p "say /bind_load_file c:\coh\binds\run\norun.txt"
and we have to manually type out the command each time it starts to mess up

    thanks for the help
  23. lol. I'm still thinking. Do you have any ideas?
  24. [ QUOTE ]
Cambios, when doing AOE with torrent and explosive blast, you should use torrent first. The mobs get knocked backwards, whereas with blast they get knocked outwards. When you use torrent first, they stay grouped close enough together to be hit by the blast.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I've noticed that with torrent, but I've never used explosive blast (obviously). Thanks for the tip!
  25. RSRobinson, I hope you can tell that I fully agree AE and Fire are the kings of AOE xping. I have done it with my fire blaster (and before that a fire/fire tanker). I don't deny that fact for a second.

I simply enjoy discussing and analyzing possibilities with people who know what they are talking about (and while I create and run RP-required RPGs for a living, there is still a bit of powergamer in me that has to be satisfied on occasion).

    [ QUOTE ]
    RSRobinson wrote:
I know how much damage energy torrent does, and I don't believe it and Frost Breath will let you AOE exp forever. but I could be wrong. What level are you?

    [/ QUOTE ]

My fire/dev blaster is 15. My energy/dev blaster is 10. My wife's ice/dev blaster is 12. We actually haven't tried the torrent + ice breath combo yet (we also have a defender/tanker combo nearing level 30 that we play a lot).

I am just wondering if 6 slotted energy torrent + 6 slotted frost breath would be a legitimate AOE xping tool. If not, then hopefully the addition of Explosive Blast or trip mine would at least make AOE xping possible at higher levels when advancement as a whole slows down.

    [ QUOTE ]
    RSRobinson wrote:
At high levels, say 30+, I'd say the best AOE is AR once you get Full Auto slotted up. Fire is very close, arguably better depending on the circumstances, and of course has been great since level 8. Energy is 3rd. Its two AOEs are decent but suffer from several drawbacks. The obvious one is that their damage is a little too low to blow away packs just with them. almost do it, but not quite and almost-dead mobs don't give any experience.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Perhaps if energy's 2 AEs are "almost enough", the addition of frost breath to that mix could make for good AOE xping at that point?

    [ QUOTE ]
    RSRobinson wrote:
Finally, the AOEs have knockback which often throws the mobs out of position after your first AOE so your second AOE doesn't hit all of them.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This is definitely the kicker. The knockback does present a random X factor that could screw things up. The best scenario I could envision for an energy and ice blaster combo would be:

Round 1) Ice blaster uses frost breath and Energy blaster uses explosive blast.

Round 2) Ice blaster uses caltrops and then energy blaster uses energy torrent.

    Or:

Round 1) Energy Blaster drops down a trip mine while Ice Blaster uses frost breath.

Round 2) Energy Blaster uses explosive blast while Ice Blaster uses caltrops.

Round 3) Energy Blaster uses energy torrent.
