Hehe. I half expected him to chase after the 'heroes' and start takin' them down. Nothing like a "You all yourself a hero? Look at what you've destroyed to tell someone they're wrong for stealing a purse!?" villian..
Fighting for common sense, rather than senseless violence that's common. -
Ok, I've put up version 3.0. There are no huge changes, but I'd been on 2.x for a while.
If 2.7 is working for you, you probably DON'T want to download 3.0. The only real change is that it allows you to tell the program if you have hover and/or fly, and there will probably be bugs until 3.3But if you have hover-only characters and don't want to fall out of the sky at all, or if you have Fly-only characters for which the binds didn't work before, this will take care of you.
For Hover-Only characters: You will now no longer fall from the sky when you activate a power when starting and stopping movement.
For Fly-Only Characters: The binds will now work for you. It's not actually Speed on Demand, as you always have speed in the air, but you can use SoD on the ground, and use fly for traveling.
You can choose "No" to both Hover and Fly for characters without either power, reducing the number of files created. Of course, if you have one character without hover and fly, and one with, you can still use the same binds... just don't hit the fly key when using your non-flying character. You can also choose No to both, even if you do have the powers, if you simply don't want SoD while in the air, but want to use Sprint on Demand on the ground.
Also, a trick in case you want to use SoD Only in the Air, and NOT automatically turn on sprint when on the ground: For Primary Run Power, hit enter to choose nothing. For Secondary Run Power, Select "X". X will replace Sprint, and since there is no actual power "X" won't do anything. If you also choose No to powexec_unqueue option then your movement on the ground should act pretty normally (no SoD), but you'll still have SoD in the air. This would have worked this way for several versions, but I don't think I thought of it when somebody asked earlier about using SoD only in the air.

There was nothing I could do and they knew that. They knew I could never pin a direct threat on them in court. I have not the power nor the money to take on the whole of Crey Industries. Even if I could, I cant lose this job. It is my last chance at a normal life. I cannot go to the police. They arent too fond of mutants no matter how benevolent. Then again, I guess Im hardly benevolent. I cant make a preemptive strike, even if I had the man power and know how. I have too much to lose. Always too much to lose.
Mark pulled up the driveway of his home. It was a decently sized house. Not a mansion by any means, but I was affordable and roomy. It was far too much room for two people that is. It had four bedrooms plus a large living room, dining room and kitchen. A slight smile crossed Marks solemn features as he considered the prospect of filling those rooms someday. Plus, he thought to himself, beats the heck out of what some other mutants are staying in.
How was your day at work honey? Marks wife inquired as he wearily stepped through the door.
Same old same old. Replied Mark. He hadnt told her about the gang and wouldnt tell her about his meeting with his boss today. He loved her too much. He had to protect her, and it was the only way he knew how.
Dinner passed uneventfully enough. A nice quiet one at home. Mark remembered he hadnt married her for her cooking, but didnt tell her that. They watched a bit of TV after dinner. Their favorite show was on, Heroes. They watched as Heroes apprehended a drunken man after a high speed car chase, and put him in the squad car. He kept claiming innocence, all the way to jail. Ironic, Mark thought.
It had been a hard day, and Mark and his wife decided to turn in early.
Good night Sheila. I love you. Mark whispered as he turned off the lights. They were soon fast asleep.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Marks eyes shot open and he looked around wildly. As soon as he realized where he was, however, he calmed down considerably. Just a dream he thought to himself, relieved, only a dream. He looked over at Sheila to see she was still peacefully sleeping. He closed his eyes and tried to go back to sleep, but a strange nagging feeling kept him awake. This is ridiculous. He thought to himself as he lay there in bed, unable to sleep.
Then, he saw them.
Shadows played against the wall of his bedroom from outside. The unmistakable shadows of men with guns. He knew they had come for him. His bosss threat was valid. He thought about calling the police, but then realized they would never get there in time. He nudged Sheila gently, waking her.
Quiet! he whispered to her sharply, fear evident in his voice. However, he wasnt afraid for himself. He was afraid for her.
I want you to crawl under the bed, stay out of sight. Dont move, dont do anything. Dont make a noise. Ill come back for you. Mark said. She had fear in her eyes. Mark winced. Why were the people he loved always caught up in his horrors. Because he had to have these conflicts. Mark got up out of bed as quietly as possible, and made sure to stay in the shadows. If they were coming for him, he would have the element of surprise, he decided. However, Mark didnt own a gun. He owned something much better. He closed his eyes and gritted his teeth as the magical hammer appeared in his hands.
Come and get it Mark whispered, his face already set in determination. -
Here's my story (somewhat different than my bio ingame, which I need to get around to typing
)

My hero started as a computer program that by accident got transfered into a sprockets body.
-
Boogs,
Hmm... those binds look correct, but they're obviously not executing. Tricky... several things might be happening here.
- I:\ sounds like a mapped network drive? If this is the case, try the binds on a local harddrive. Maybe the files aren't loading quick enough, and you're calling another bind file before the first is finished loading, and everything is getting out of whack.
- Screwed up binds. Did you use other keybinds, either from another configuration of my binds, or somebody elses, on different keys? My binds don't clear old binds (it wouldn't know where they were), so if you accidentally hit a key still bound the old way, it'd load a file that might screw things up.
-Are you getting any "unable to locate file I:\coh\binds...." or "file does not exist" errors (forget the exact text of that error when it can't find the specified bind file), or anything like that when you try to load the reset.txt file, or press any other keys?
If none of these ideas leads you to a solution, do a "/bind_save" command from the game, and take a look at the c:\keybinds.txt file, and maybe post or send me the lines for the mode key, the reset key, and the forward key.
We'll figure this one out.

I'd like to say, I've fought tooth and nail trying to sign in to this forum, just to say to this post, "MORE!"
Really, interesting and grappling!
Must... know.... mor....e. -
I wasn't meaning my post to be a flame. I was just trying to add to the discussion, but it probably came off in the wrong tone.
I can't complain, because you helped fix a problem I had right off the bat.
If you would ever like help testing/developing (perhaps using a different language or something - for better UI/ease of use?) I would gladly help. -
So I was a mutant. Heck still am to some degree. However, I get ahead of myself. My powers manifested themselves in my teenage years, like most normal mutants. Yet I was blessed to inherit my powers without the visual side effects. No pointy ears, no off colored skin, no disgusting bones poking out from my epidermis. I was just like any other normal boy, on the outside that is. As for my actual powers, I was given incredible strength and speed. Not like the Flash or Superman mind you. However, it was enough to make a difference, without drawing too much unwanted attention. Then there was that hammer. As far as I can tell, its the only real power I have that separates me from the super athletic high school athlete. Its the only real power I have that got me killed.
Marks calm, confident stride and solemn visage belied his nervousness as he walked down a long corridor lined with doors in the Crey Industries building. It had been almost a week since the incident, and Mark had thought it was forgotten. Apparently he was wrong.
Perfect. Ive been here for a week and Im already on my way to the bosss office Mark thought to himself, inwardly groaning. He came to a stop in front of one door in particular and gave it a brief but firm knock.
Come in. he heard a calm, cool voice call from the other side. Too calm.
Yes sir. You wanted to see me? Mark asked as he entered the room and removed his security cap. He still wore his characteristic sunglasses though, even inside.
Mr. Cannons, take a seat. The sleazy looking business executive said, motioning to a chair from across his desk.
Ill stand. Mark replied shortly.
Very well then. Lets get started. Im sure you know why youre here. The executive started as he folded his hands and leaned forward in his chair.
Im sure I can guess. You dont like my kind here at Crey. Isnt that right?
Au contraire Mr. Cannons. We here at Crey realize you have an outstanding gift.
Marks eyebrows noticeably rose at this, but the rest of his face displayed no emotion. Perhaps this meeting would go better than he dared to hope.
Crey would like to offer you a very special new job, Mr. Cannons; one that would be better suited to your abilities.
What might that be? Mark asked, growing increasingly wary and more than a little uneasy.
In short, we would like to offer you the chance to learn more about yourself, and for Crey to learn more about your mutant gifts in general- The executive started but didnt get to finish.
I think Ive heard quite enough, Mr.-Mr. Smith Mark replied as he read the name plaque on the executives desk. I will not be Creys nor anyone elses guinea pig. This conversation is over.
Please Mr. Cannons, atleast look at the salary associated wit- Mr. Smith started to plead.
No. No thank you. No amount of money will change my mind. Have a good day sir. Mark firmly stated, becoming slightly agitated. He turned to leave.
Very well then. Good day to you too then Mr. Cannons. Oh by the way, do you love your wife Mr. Cannons? Mr. Smith inquired in a cold, serious voice. A deadly voice.
Mark quickly spun around, fighting to control the rage building up inside of him. What the hell is that supposed to mean you sick [censored]? I dont take kindly to being threatened
Not a threat, merely a question Mr. Cannons. Came the calm reply as Mr. Smith leaned back in his chair, assuming a rather pensive posture.
You listen to me. You stay away from me and my wife or I will kill you. I will hunt you down and kill you Mark replied menacingly. To emphasize his point, he brought a tightly clenched fist down on the executives desk, harder than he had wanted effectively shattering it into two pieces. Your going to want to get that cleaned up. Mark added, taking some measure of satisfaction from the splintered wood and terrified look on Mr. Smiths face. With that, he turned and walked out of the door, slamming it behind him. Mark never looked back.

Okay, so i admit it wasn't a very funny joke.......it was just something that came to me one day while i was fighting my umpteenth bloodbrother. I would however like a chance to defend myself on one point though, that is, if you follow your contacts and such plot lines evolve explaining the occurance of drug and arms smuggling, ect. My point in this is that every one of those contacts, your sole sources of information in the game, is introduced to you, in one degree or another, by a government employee. The same government that creates crime waves to keep superpowered citizens from having too much time on their hands. You can keep your capes, i'm hanging up my costume to go do something that really helps mankind....like fastfood

That day Fredrick put me in a rather interesting situation. Ironically, I put him in an even more interesting one, and definitely much more dangerous. I was left with the choice to trust or to distrust. Now that I think back about it, it wouldnt have really mattered either way. I still would have taken the same course of action. I still have the same, ultimate goal. However, by his generosity and benevolence, he had put himself in much deeper than he had expected. If my enemies ever find out he aided me, they will come for him. They will come for his life, and for his information. By telling him this story, I am killing him. Not directly, and hopefully not for certain, but if he loses his life over this, it will be as if I stabbed him with my own hand. Regardless, it is a chance I must take. I refuse to be an unsung hero. I refuse to fade away into anonymity and obscurity. If I die, there must be someone left behind to tell my story. Now its just up to me to write the ending.
It was extremely cold in Paragon City this time of year. However, snow hadnt fallen for a solid week now. Still, that didnt stop the monstrous wind from chilling all foolish enough to be outside to the bone. This specific evening, ice was beginning to form on buildings everywhere, and it appeared that snow could be falling any minute. As a result, there was almost no one on the street this evening. Almost.
Two security guards stood outside an impossibly large office building idly chatting. One of the guards was much larger and well built than the other, and had long blonde hair with a matching clean beard. Other than that, both were dressed nearly identical. Both had on long navy blue pants, and wore a thick security jacket to keep them warm against the elements. Both wore a police-styled security cap. The one discrepancy came with the glasses. The larger blonde man wore black, Oakley styled sunglasses that contained a greenish tint, while the other man wore none.
So? How does it feel partner? Roger asked the bigger man.
How does what feel? replied Mark, obviously not understanding..
You know this whole having a job thing, Roger jabbed playfully.
I have to admit, it feels pretty good being able to provide for me and the wife again Mark chuckled, having taken no hard feelings at the jest.
And the best part? Roger continued, No one would dare try to break into a Crey Industries building, especially not in this weather.
Jinxed, replied Mark cynically. The two of them shared a modest chuckle.
The chuckle was ended abruptly. No one indeed, came the voice from the adjacent alleyway. A Hellion stepped out of the concealing shadows, and was followed by six more members. His gang. Some wore jeans and a leather vest, with a tee shirt underneath, apparel much too thin for the weather. Others wore large jackets and caps. However, all of them wore the customary red bandanna around their face that associated them with their Blood Brotherhood. Me and the boys would like to request entrance into your fine establishment. What can you do for us?
Sorry boys, no can do. Roger grimly replied as his hand drifted to his holster. Then he let out a soft groan. He was a security guard now not a police officer. Security guards were strictly prohibited from carrying guns. Instead his hand came to rest onto what would have to replace it, a seemingly frail nightstick.
That sure is a shame. The gang leader replied mockingly. By the way, the names Bruno. If one of you manages to survive, tell that to the police when they get here, he added as an afterthought which put a grin on his and the rest of the gangs faces. Almost as if on queue each member of the gang drew their respective weapons.
Bruno pulled out a large baseball bat. A Louisville Slugger. The other members pulled out assorted other weapons. Some wrapped chains around their fists, others pulled out small hatchets, and still others grabbed their sledge hammers they had strapped to their back.
Mark stepped confidently forward, and speaking for the first time said, seven on two that doesnt seem like fair odds.
Just the way we like em. Bruno replied with a devilish grin.
Next time bring more was Marks only response, and it was his turn to grin.
With that Mark dashed forward, impossibly quick, to the nearest Hellion. The Hellions eyes noticeably widened in fear as Mark grabbed him by the front of his leather vest with one hand, and proceeded to launch him headlong toward two of his teammates. All three crashed to the ground under the impact of the first, and they remained there, sprawled out. Dazed. Four on two Mark corrected as he turned to face his other threats.
Meanwhile, Roger had used Marks convenient distraction to flank the gang, and was now finishing a brutal combo with his nightstick on the back of the head of yet another gang member. Make that three, he added with a grin.
Mark moved to the next Hellion. This one had a hatchet. Not like it much mattered. Mark grabbed him by the throat before he could react, and slammed him roughly against the side of the building. A sickening crack ensued as he felt some of the Hellions bones give way under the force of the impact. Mark smiled grimly at the crunch. He then turned to watch the rest of the brawl unfold. Suddenly a look of horror shot across his face.
Bruno had long since thrown down his bat and pulled out a pistol; a pistol he had leveled directly a Roger.
No! Mark screamed in hopeless defiance. As fast as he was, he knew he would never make it in time to save his friends life.
Goodbye mate. Bruno taunted as he prepared to pull the trigger.
Mark had no choice. He gritted his teeth and closed his eyes as an incredibly large sledgehammer seemingly magically manifested itself in his hands. It was nearly as tall as a normal man, and the head was the size of an average mans chest. Conveniently enough. Yet even more amazing, it was made of pure, earthen stone. It easily weighted 200 pounds, probably much more, yet Mark held it effortlessly in one hand.
Rogers jaw dropped, seemingly more in disbelief of the hammer than the prospect of his own death, but there was no time for explanations. Bruno, intent on the kill, hadnt noticed a thing. With a loud roar Mark heaved the hammer straight at Bruno. The hammer sped through the air, head first, at a tremendous speed. It connected violently with Brunos arm, not only knocked the gun loose, but literally broke every bone in his arm judging by the misshapen form it took. Bruno futilely tried to cradle the broken arm in his good one, but it didnt help at all. His head swam and he soon quickly passed out from the growing pain, landing heavily on the cement.
All the final remaining Hellion could do was gawk and slowly back away, until he worked up the courage to turn tail and flee as fast as possible.
Let him go said Mark. The police will be along soon enough to fix this mess. His stone hammer that had been lying at Brunos feet magically reappeared in his hand. Then, in much the same way it had appeared, dissipated into a fine cloud of dust.
More importantly, Roger started, now looking at Mark, as if for the first time, W-what was that?
---------------------------------------------------------------
A small security camera strategically placed on the building let out a soft hum as it zoomed in on Marks visage. Yes maam, we got everything a technician replied to the entity on the other end of the phone, as he sat up in the control room of an impossibly large office building. Crey Industries. -

Again, if YOU don't like Health and think it's useless to slot, fine. Don't slot it (unfortunately for you and those who don't like Health, you cannot choose not to take it if you want Stamina).

Well this explains a lot. You don't know what the hell you are talking about. You don't even understand the basics of how power pools work.

Aha. Because everyone knows that in games like this, all that matters is how the numbers crunch out. Practical use of a power never actually matters.
Tell us again (wrongly) how power pools work? -
Hey, hey! Awesome mod. Something I encountered while goofing with it, though.... I told the files to store in C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\Binds which worked fine, and I copied the line from your program and pasted it into COH, and it complained at me because it read the argument as 4 different arguments. I fixed that by adding quotation marks around the path, and it was happy, but there were more issues....
In addition to having a little trouble loading the binds, AutoRun/AutoFly had issues turning off when going backwards, and Sprint would never turn off. (Didn't try with fly because I'm still lvl 12). I eventually noticed that the reason was because it was trying to do the bind loads using the path I gave without the quotation marks, and it was unsucessfully loading the files.
To fix this problem, you should probably check to see if the path has quotation marks in it from the user, and if not, always add them, otherwise for people like me who use path names with spaces, COH will be very unhappy.
Once I worked around that problem, the binds worked perfectly. Thanks. -
Say Guys and Gals what do you think of my new hero's story.
The Story of Asterisk
Ron Cable had a reputation as expert programmer\hacker depending on which circles you walked. Perhaps to good a reputation as he came to the attention of the ClockWork King. The King sent some of his minions to get Ron. The Sprockets found Ron late one night at his apartment working on his advanced anti-virus program A fight ensued and Ron was captured but not before he was able to take out one of the minions by throwing him into his computer. Through this accident or perhaps fate Asterisk was born as it were.
His first memory is of seeing his creator, the one he was made to protect being dragged away, for somehow the program that Ron was working on got transferred to the sprocket's body. Over weeks the program explored his new environment and as it did the program evolved into something more than it's original purpose so to the body in which it resides. Mastering the use of the form it is was in it took to the streets looking to save his creator and destroy the ClockWork King.
Eventually it located some the Clockwork's minions trying to abduct someone and promptly attacked them. Destroying them and collecting information from the remains. When the task was complete it turned to go but the person whom it had saved yelled "What is your name? So I may tell others who saved me." The program computed this query then replied "Asterisk" for the asterisk is used as an unknown variable in computer language and the Clockwork King truly was not expecting him. Then off into the night he walked. -
Ok, just to make sure I hadn't missed something a month ago when I originally tested out my binds, I tried them without the double calls when flying. It does not help with the falling-out-of-the-sky problem at all.
You are correct, Nixxed, in that neither hover nor fly need to be called when starting and stopping if you do not HAVE fly already. Of course you don't need speed on demand either, because you don't have speed. But to work with sod on the ground, I'll still have to do the bind_load_files because those are what keep track of which keys are pressed and which not.
Anyway, next week, I'll try to modify the program for hover-only, and fly-only characters, and while i'm at it, I might as well change them for characters with neither, so there is just no fly key at all. Mainly, this will help the fly-only characters who can not currently use the binds. The hover-only characters can already use them, but at least they won't fall out of the air at all. Of course, if hover or fly gets turned off, for example if you're stunned, it won't turn back on automatically either.
Anyway, maybe I overreacted to Nixxed's suggestion that I didn't fix the falling-out-of-the-sky problem because I was lazy. Normally I like helping people out, so please continue to post questions and requests. I do, however, miss the exchange of ideas that this thread was originally, so if you know how to program in Basic, and want to improve on my binds, please do. The .bas file is always included in the download, and available separately for those that don't need the executable portion.

AMD 1.8XP
512 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600
My mom's is an Alienware PC running an nvidia fx card.
Both running XP Pro.
I am unsure what to do. Guess I can try reinstalling XP and then CoH. Not sure if that would help though.

Same Operating systems... hmm. I would suggest you NOT go to all the trouble of reinstalling everything. It's just a lot of work with NO guarantee it would change anything. And I doubt it's hardware, really.
The main goal is to get you in the air flying... so maybe try Ahzurdan's binds, and see if you have the same problems? Mine really only differ from his in that there are more files, and I use +zoomin$$-zoomin, and then up 1$$down 0 etc to get movement instead of +up toggles. So maybe it's something there that is causing your particular installation of CoH to crash. So try his and let us know if they work for you.

Ever wonder why you're constantly fighting an endless number of identical foes? Why Paragon City seems to have everything but a prision? Why the city police often ignore street crime? How about why Paragon City needs superheros when it has those awesome drones?
The reason for all of these issues and more is that the Paragon City Concil is behind the crime wave destroying our fair city! In an effort to prevent the ten thousand superpowered individuals living in P.C. from having too much time on their hands, the city concil lends it's support to the local villiany. They release them from custody, fund their armories, and supply them with illegal substances and technology all in an effort to prevent us from taking our rightful places! Using plants and fake informers they use misdirection and dishonesty to occupy our lives. The worst news is that certain "heros" have even been turned over to this shadowy conspiracy with promises of power and wealth!
I say that their time is up! Rise my breathren! The moment has come to bite the hand that feeds and stop being used like puppets. Destroy the problem at the source and clean up Paragon City once and for all!
(Okay, had to get that out of my system, it's a joke of course, but i do often wonder how many green skinned druggie thugs and deamon worshipping wizards there really can be out there) -

The binds *can* be fixed, but like you said in an earlier post, you don't want to have to specialize them so much for people's specific needs.
If there were options for hover only or no-fly at all, some people would benefit.
With *just* hover, you don't have to queue or unqueue it, since it's a toggle. I know when I used the binds before I got fly, it caused me to fall numerous times because of enabling/disabling the power when moving, which was no necessary because I didn't have fly yet.
[/ QUOTE ]
So Nixxed, are you actually saying that I'm not fixing the falling out of the sky problem because I don't want to? Hah, you are so way off base.
Ok, lets look at the problem closer. Maybe it would happen less (it would/could definitely still happen, but MAYBE less often) if I took out the self correcting features of the binds. As an example:
W "+zoomin$$-zoomin$$up 0$$down 0$$forward 1$$backward 0$$left 0$$right 0$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly$$powexec_name fly$$bind_load_file C:\CoH\F\Fe.txt"
That is the standard line for changing from stopped, to moving forward. The 2 hovers are in there so if you don't have fly you move into hover. The two flys are in there for exactly the same reason if you DO have fly.
Yes, I can have a single call to each. But that is what caused all the problems with the binds 'breaking' and getting you in the wrong modes - flying when stopped, hovering when moving. These double calls when going into fly, and single calls with unqueue when coming out of fly, are what corrects that. Yes, it's a toggle, but if you just call it once, it will get screwed up and be toggling at the wrong times. If you prefer that to falling out of the sky more, then go back to one of the earlier bind sets. Ahzurdan's work quite well, and Falstaff has a script that lets you reset the keys.
It's a choice I guess, and yes, I made that choice. Maybe people do fall out of the sky less with Ahz's binds because, I believe, he just toggles them. I should play with his binds for a couple nights. But the way I have them set up, I don't fall out of the sky (by flying methodically), and I don't get the modes screwed up. Maybe I'll make hover and fly optional/configurable. Maybe I'll have some time this weekend to test doing it a fundamentally different way... maybe I've gotten tunnel vision, and I can somehow prevent falling from the sky, and keep the self-correcting features. But you say it can be fixed, Nixxed... Please tell me how, without breaking something else. YOU get in there and test, and change things, and spend an entire SUnday in the game without a single experience point to show for it.
You also refer to a post where I declined to make a change for somebody's unusual play style. This is a WHOLE separate issue from a problem such as the falling out of the sky one. These unique playstyle changes are the ones I'm resistant to changing. One guy wanted to change the running portion so that you automatically go into hover when stopping, because he'd forget to go into hover when fighting (I did this one actually, because it was simple, but didn't announce it, and his very next message asked for yet more specific changes to save himself pressing keys). I've gotten requests for flying-only characters, without hover, who don't want the binds to change to hover when stopping... a very reasonable request, but a completely different beast then what I set out to write... it's not speed on demand, it's just speed period. These would all be useful to SOME people, but not many.
But I do have a life, and I also want to play the darn game sometimes. I just don't have the time to make everybody happy. In the first half of this post, this was fun puzzle solving and figuring things out. Now it's just work, which I do because I like helping people out.
The .bas is there, and it's really not that hard. If you think it's so easy to fix Nixxed, then you fix it.

This is rather elementary, so sorry if you already know it...but never underestimate the use of dialogue. It is soo versatile. A few lines of dialogue between characters can be more valuable than several paragraphs of description. Also, i find having a character's thoughts voiced in dialogue form can sometimes be extremely important in developing character. Remember, the dialogue is important, but the line of description that comes after it is even more so.
