the servers are in the us ==> if you are in europe you have to do more hops through more internet nodes to reach them, each hop == lag ==> us servers means more lag and not less.
doesnt make one bit of difference what bandwidth they have on their side of the atlantic or if they have a fibre mpls piped directly through their ISP and into a load balancing box. transatlantic traffic, especially that used for streaming or online gaming, will have a noticeable time delay (at least more often than a locally - relatively speaking - hosted server). Why else do you think large online entities start server farms in foreign hosting providers and ISPs in the first place ?

For mainland Europe that is true, but that's NOT true for the UK. We have far better links to the US than we do to mainland Europe, and having played on the US servers myself, I can guarantee you, there's less lag from here to there than from here to Hamburg.

not sure I agree with that.(not saying you are wrong, but I'd have to see it to agree with it) from working in an ISP and providing hosting to american companies that want a gateway to europe, local regional hosting beats trans oceanic every time.
granted, its been getting better all the while (I used to do netwrok planning for SAP systems international customers and satellite uplinks and isdn bandwidth calculations were a nightmare) but i still dont think uk to usa can have less latency than uk to germany (not line speed, but latency, though I would argue line speed as well).
must see if i can dig up the server ips and run a test to check this out. -

having said that: what do I think will happen next?
server hosting has probably been paid up to the end of the year and enough staff have been left to handle maintenance so I think we're staying here for the foreseeable future.
eventually either
a: move accounts to US servers (may have issues with billing laws)
b: force us to start new accounts on us servers (will cause loss of players if stuff is lost in the creation of a new account - though they could jsut reverse the previous server migration engine and suck us back to the states!)
c: physically move the servers to the states and join them to the cluster there. they already have the hardware in place and the front end, so it will just (just! sorry, its not just its a bit more than that) be a case of transferring the data from the servers and initialising new virtual servers in their cloud to take the images.

I wont be around on friday but I was thinking of logging in with skinjob and getting him to 20 by doign the valentines missions on thursday. keep an eye out for me if anyone's online.
great fun last night. its a pity about synapse but we can sort him and his mechanical friends out next week. (really hope we can get a multi-mega babbage brawl going).
its a pity as i was originally hopin gto level up through the task forces primarily but there was no way a group of 15s and 16s were getting through those 21st level clockwork. I contracted a bad case of Belhor in the first mob and had to be rezzed, just in time to meet the second lot.. we'd have been resting every two minutes and earning very low xp (66xp for a lvl 21 cannon knight ? is that right for a lvl 16 scrapper? ) -
Miss freeze and Xtream both activated on the SG forum.

dont worry, toys are still firmly contained within the pram. I'm not havign a go at the devs.
just saying that the MA as it stands (all based on hearsay and rumour)isnt what I would have wished for. Its a step in the right direction for me but not there yet.
having said that, I do have a few story ideas and some can be done with even the most basic of tools so I'll be more than happy to give it a go when it is released.

what I'd like:
customisable maps like the current base editor , multi-level links through lifts.
placeable glowies
editable elements/properties on destructables
Placeable spawn points (even if each spawn point has a radius that doesnt allow other spawns within a certain range to allow for balance).
Spawn point severity (small, med, large spawn)
patrol spawn / routes
Linked/interdependant mission objectives
triggers (if glowy clicked then....) or if area entered then....

I realise that not everyone wants these things but I'd like them as an advanced option for the editor.
lots of ideas for missions but until I know the final set of tools available to us there's not much point developing any of them as they might not be possible with whats available
I see a lot of long nights at the PC when this gets released. I also predict a lot of grovelling for forgiveness as my better half starts to feel neglected -

beign shared hosting the board has stability but unfortunately I cant install all the modules I would like and we are getting quite a few spambot accounts being set up. While usually these are easy to spot, some look almost like real users. -
definitely a good laugh. I can see where it gets its reputation though. lack of travel powers would make this a killer and some of the mission mobs were a touch on the "OMG [censored]" side of things. but we persevered and earned the merits
I'll hopefully have my tanker back for Synapse next week. lookign forward to some babbage bashing -
interesting reading.
All i was really looking for was a listing of the defense and resist % that the various powers give. not for alt creation, just out of curiosity.

anyone got any details on how much benefit a scrapper gets from x or y power in comparison to another ?
is there a way to make a chart of all the DEF or RES bonuses of pwoers for say a lvl 20 scrapper (level number at random, I dont actually have a level 20 scrapper) and put them in order of effectiveness ? has anyone done this before ?
IE: maneauvers vs Active Defense vs other def or res boosting power.
has the same been done for attacking powers ?
Just curious because I will have to make choices about power pools, ancilliary pools etc soon -
ps. best fun I've had playing city of heroes since I joined my first team with my first alt waaay back when.

four deaths and zero experience earned later and my shield is now a flaming shieldy shaped slab of hotness.
