    District 9

Well, I've not seen District 9 yet, so this'll be a slight derailing of the thread, but...

I actually really liked Sunshine. I thought the acting, the lighting and the plot were really good. Admittedly, the ending was a bit crappy where they went from "introspective commentary of the hardships of human beings under stressful situations" to "RAR MONSTER PERSON!" But I was willing to overlook that for the rest of the story's sake.

    Umbrage.

My compulsive need to correct spelling aside, that's a good philosophy.

    Hi guys!

    Thread over,you say?

But can't we leave this thread up as a single, unified thread for Haet to vent his spleen in? If nothing else, the irony'd keep me well-nourished for at least a week.

    Hi guys!

    Really? Oh...I'm kinda disappointed now.

    Hi guys!

    The Zen Fluff-Thread.
  7. Elysienne

    Hi guys!

Oh, hey you know what SHOULD be done..?

For every Rookery thread posted hereafter, someone else should post a "The Anti-Rookery" thread! That way, the two posts will cancel each other out and certainly not cause yet more pointless topics to sift through.

'Cause that's how these things work, right?

Well, that's what all the cool kids are doing these days.

Even me, apparently, seeing as I have no stake in either side of the argument and am just sitting on the sidelines taking pot-shots at any target I like.

I mean seriously.. completely disingenuous, anti-pop, wannabe edgy contrary nonsense is the new pop culture. Its hip to hate! Apathy is the new zest!

    Hi guys!

Great, now I'm going to die from overexposure to pointless sarcasm.

I'm...I'm sorry, did you actually just say this in the context of G.I Joe?

Is dumbing that down even possible?

Sorry, I know that's a bit outspoken in this thread seeing as quite a few of you seem to be big fans of the various incarnations (and more power to you, etc,) and maybe it's because I'm not American that the series doesn't hard-wire itself into the patriotism-centre of my brain but... even as a kid I wouldn't touch the show. And that was back when I could be entertained by turning a lightbulb on and off really fast while moving my hand to see it suddenly teleport from one position to another.

(Also, it'd be "dumbed things down" but now I'm just getting picky)
  13. Apology accepted, dude.

... Okay, I suck at misanthropy.
  14. Just as a quick point, there's a difference between misanthropy and acting like a jerk. Just because you dislike people as a whole doesn't necessarily mean you'll act on that dislike.
  15. I will freely admit that I'm one of the few people I know that deliberately make a differentiation between pedophilia and pedorasty.
Pedophilia being an attraction to children, and pedorasty being the molestation of children.

In my mind, one is a sickness, whereas one is a criminal offence. What I'm saying is that people have no right to police people's thoughts and fetishes. There are a great many people who could be locked up for idly fantasising about, say, stealing money out of a cashier's till if that kind of thing were to spread to different crimes.

The hysteria surrounding child abuse is immense.

Now, don't get me wrong. I believe that pedorasts should be locked away for a good, good long while. And that extends to people that have been actively involved in creating child pornography.
Its a very, very fine line, and I recognise that. And I can certainly understand the hysteria behind it. It's almost valid.

However, I'm sure almost all the people reading these boards have things on their hard-drives or burned to DVD or hidden under their beds that they'd be ashamed to have come into the light of day. I know I do, though it's not of a harmful nature.

My point is that, while I can see where the original poster is coming from, and I agree entirely with the people posting after that said "report this individual, with evidence if necessary," and I also agree with the people that said that this particular person was just a troll trying to instigate argument.. I don't believe that all pedophiles should be locked away. Some of them may just be confused or introverted people, struggling with the perversion that they are born with. YES. People are BORN with perversions, preferences and kinks, they don't CHOOSE them. If that's true of homosexuals, why should it be any less true for less acceptable sexual preferences? I think it's fairly widely accepted these days that sexual behaviour is NOT a conscious choice. Some of these people are not the predators portrayed in the media. Some of them are wrestling with the consciences daily, pulling themselves through life and ignoring their sickness, or trying to come to terms with and disempower it.

Pedorasts should, without a doubt, be locked away for as long as they legally can be. Pedophiles may be able to be helped. That is the most important distinction.

As for violence in computer games... well, if someone's going to act on what a computer game illustrates for them, they'll do exactly the same thing for what a film tells them. Or a book. Or a comic. Or a friend at a bar. These people are already out of touch with reality. It's not down to computer games, its down to their own personal grasp on reality.

    This.

As I pointed out, two of my villains are very un-needless-evil, and are actually quite nice.

The rest.. well, what's the point of kitten abuse? It's not like it achieves anything. Except for Exodus Terror, none of them would eat the kitten. And Exodus would only eat the kitten because, to her, anything that's meat is a viable source of food, and she is very much of the "survive first above all else" mind-set. But she'd only eat kittens if she were REALLY desperate for food. Lots more meat on a human, after all.

And Silhouette Scythe is a very powerful precognitive who occasionally gets caught up in the fractal nature of time and the impact of seemingly random actions on large events. Hence, making sure the damn cat was exactly where it needed to be, when it needed to be there. Unfortunately, her logic would fall apart when she got to the "stabbing the kitty to make sure it stays where it needs to." But then.. she is being slowly driven mad by her precognitive skills, so.. you know. Swings and roundabouts.

Personally, I find the kind of character that'll kill a kitten just to kill a kitten kinda boring. Or perhaps they're trying to compensate for something.
  17. Interesting one!

Quisling would probably take in the kitten and care for it (she's one of the least villainous of my villains)
Acquisition would turn it over to someone who could care for it (Also very un-evil)
Silhouette Scythe would make sure that the kitten was EXACTLY where it needed to be to stop the whole of TIME screwing UP... and as soon as it tried to move away stab it in the heart and place it exactly right.
    Monstrous Regiment would ignore it.
And Exodus Terror would eat it if she was hungry, ignore it if something more interesting was going on, or perhaps play with it a bit if she was really, really bored. Before either ignoring it or eating it.

    Dxp

I only had two goals this 2XP weekend; get a scrapper (19) and a tank (30) to level 35.

I failed both. I only got 'em to 34 and 32 respectively.
But I really don't care. I had a lot of fun helping other people hit their targets instead, and got involved in an impromptu ship raid... I really can't complain at all. Thanks for a great weekend, Virtue!
  19. Arc Name: Somnambulism
    Arc ID: 285460
    Faction: Heroic
    Creator Global/Forum Name: @Elysienne
    Difficulty Level: Medium-hardish?
Synopsis: A Warshade approaches you concerning a disturbance in an office building. Citizens have begun to attack each other for no given reason, like a sudden and massive series of psychotic breaks. But the Warshade seems to know more than she lets on about the situation. What is causing the phenomenon? And why does this "Oublietrix" not divulge everything?
Estimated Time to Play: Perhaps two hours? It's five missions long, but it only has one large map.
Link to More Details or Feedback: None
Important Notes: This arc is designed with 35+ characters in mind. I've not played it through with any character smaller, so it may be more difficult for players playing a smaller character.
The first and second mission are failable, but it's not likely, just possible. There is an EB in mission 3, and an AV in level 5.

    I'm scared....

    Re: I'm Scared....

    I'm Ely!

Or am I Ely_NA now? Hmm.. let's see...
  21. We seem to have strayed off the point of "How can I have a better RP experience overall" which was more about tolerance and communication, and more to "WHY YOUR RP IS WRONG."

On a side-note, I have issues with the whole emo thing (how can music be labelled as "emotional?" Music is DESIGNED to evoke emotion!) but that's a whole different discussion. If I'm misinterpreting the genre, feel free to tell me. VIA PM. Not via this thread which, up until fairly recently, was going in a good direction.)

... boy, that was a very long aside.

    Tron Legacy?....

    Dear film industry,

    STOP [censored] MY CHILDHOOD.
  23. There we hit upon the difference between the character being an #@$hole and the player being an #@$hole.

A very big part of not being an #@$hole as a player, yet playing an #@$hole as a character, is being willing to lose, or be shouted down in an argument, or be made to look like a fool. Nobody who is a sore loser should even try to play an #@$holeish character, as it will lead to OOC conflict and drama.
  24. Big congratulations, Smersh and SmershFamily!
  25. "Don't be an #@$hole" is a wonderful rule of thumb to go by in all roleplaying interactions. However, what one person deems un-#@$holish may not be the same as another's interpretation. That's where all these strange, almost draconic social sub-rules come into play. A vague guideline of what is, and what is not, #@$holery.

Personally, I think it all boils down to communication. If you're in even the slightest doubt about what your character is doing in terms to the reactions it may elicit in others, then talk to the player or players. Even if you need to call a brief OOC time-out to set boundaries and rules. Though, frankly, if the situation you're creating is going to be that involved, I'd suggest getting a hold of the players you're going to run it with beforehand and laying out the OOC guidelines for IC interaction as a scheduled event for whatever plot you're running.
