Quote:Well, based on your post and that line of thought and slant on history...First it was the Fire/Kin Controller, but they nerfed that. My Elec/Shield Scrapper used to be able to hold his own in a group of baddies set for 8 people with no bosses, and could manage with bosses in there, but now he gets hit like he has no defenses at all. So I ask, what is the newest best type of toon to make before I waste time and inf on a toon that will suck!!!
It doesn't matter. Anything you make will be reduced to something that's not as powerful and fun as you liked.
So...
Probably best for you to make something that is in need of some improving...
That way it will become more powerful over time and you won't quit it and need to post on the forums to ask what is the current most powerful toon to make!

Quote:I agreeThat's kind of the point. A Natural Jackie Chan is far different from a Natural Ironik. I have to go Tech to compete with him. Tech Matermind, honestly.
I just don't see the point of making an "inhuman" origin, since the current crop cover most of the possibilities just fine. Superman has spectacular abilities, sure, but he's still Natural. Now, if he trains to hone those abilities, then he's just a well-trained Natural. That's no different from The Punisher becoming more proficient with firearms. Iron Man got better at using his armor through training, so he's just a well-trained Technology. The Human Torch got better at using his abilities, so he's just a well-trained Science. And so on. Basically training and experience just moves you from amateur to professional status. It doesn't change your inherent Origin.
I can just understand how some think there should be an origin split in defining the difference of a turtle who trained really hard and a grizzly bear who just is as big and bad as it is without ever lifting a weight.
I don't feel any need for a split in those two origins, but... I can see the point (As I am sure you can as well).
Still... I share your assessment... the difference doesn't equate a difference of origin (in my book).
Let's say, in their prime, that Andre the Giant could hit as hard as Mike Tyson.
Should they have two different origins? (Taking it to the comicbook level, so let's argue that Andre could be inhuman, hehe)
P.S. I miss Andre!! -

Not to play a game of semantics, but Dementor said the one thing I was thinking that is sort of in-favor of the idea of an alien-type origin...
Calling it "Inhuman".
It was the only word I could think of that covers the concept nicely, but I didn't post it.
This covers all sorts of beings whose exceptional asepct is their natural powers/abilities that are greater than that of a human's.
I still think that the Natural origin fits this perfectly fine, but I do understand the difference.
A change would make the Natural Origin completely about training and physical conditioning and pushing to the peak of potential physicality, while the Inhuman Origin would be entirely about a being who relies on powers, strengths and/or abilities that are far above the baseline human and that they did not have to do anything special to obtain.
I do get it and don't have a problem with the division... However, I also have zero problem with those two being shared within today's Natural Origin (Just like many variants lie within each of the other origins).
With the current origin, "Natural" is a relative term. A natural Ent is far different than a natural human, just as a natural tiger is far different than a natural shrew.
Quote:While I am not in favor of any origin changing or anything... The thing is, aliens and nonhumans would not all need be of the Inhuman Origin, just the same as all humans are not of the Natural Origin.Originally Posted by IronikAlso disagree. My aliens are all over the place. I have Nat, Tech and Science off the top of my head. I don't think I have a Magic one simply because that's not how I view aliens, but they aren't all Nats.
Those aliens of yours that do rely on natural powers of their own would be Inhuman Origin.
However, those aliens that rely on advanced technology would still be Tech Origin and so on.
Which also brings up another point...
An alien that trains and perseveres to achieve their maximum physicality/strength/power... would that be Inhuman or Natural?
Sounds like Natural... Especially since one of the arguments was that the Natural Origin pushes humans to equal power as any other origin... So, they are no lesser or even any different in strength than an Inhuman... So, they should be completely left as those who did not push themselves as hard as those of a Natural origin... Further muddying the reason for having it (In my opinion).
Still... all that being said... an alien or elf that trains and pushes themselves beyond the baseline of their own race of beings would be of Natural Origin and Inhuman would be best left as those who are not that far above the average for their species.

Quote:My apologies for only quoting one tiny bit of your post, but......
For Ancillary Pools, again, priority of 10. I don't regard them as any different from the Primary and Secondary powers, personally.
...
That's a great way to word it and I feel the same way.
My ancillary armor power and some of the attacks get used every single encounter. As an Electric/Electric/Electric Blaster... not having power customization for one of those power groups may as well mean none for any of them. I don't view my Shocking Bolts any different than my other Electric blasts.
As for your comments about the Patron Pools... I agree with it up to the point of now that we have ancillary pools villainside, Patron Powers can wait... But I'd still rather not see something like Mu Lightning limited to red. I get the thematics of it (Although, why it is red, I don't know [some friends and I came up with releasing gases with the electricity to match that color when going to the Rogue Isles under cover), I'd rather see it opened up for individual spins for whatever concept players want.
Still, at least giving Villains Ancillary Pools allows for Patron Pools not getting love until a later time (if ever) without it being a low blow to villains.
And... I hope to see the weapon customization means no power customization defeated some day by the clever developers and all.
I hope it is something they see benefit in overcoming and is actually something they can accomplish, eventually.
Hopefully that is not too great an amount of wishful thinking on my part! -
Never read the graphic novel... Rarely watch television...
Just my opinions...
I really enjoyed the first episode. With a few exceptions... Some logical leaps, the opening scene made me laugh a bit too much (It was less scary and a little more... hilarious to me, just in how it all looked... if it could have maintained the drama of that moment more than a gruesome laugh-fest [for me] I would have dug that scene a lot more... still... for television, not bad that they even went with it, so I still give that scene a thumbs up)... however the big killer in my enjoyment was the ex-wife and partner relationship.
It's not even so much that the story went that way (Hey, if it is following the graphic novel, then it is on that and not the show), but more so in just the poorly written way it was delivered.
My wife and I were enjoying every moment of the zombie apocalypse survival and the interpersonal relationships of Rick and the father and son... But when they went to the camp of survivors and very non-cleverly "revealed" who she was and the son was and the Oooooh soap opera tragic love triangle... it seemed to point to where this series is really going to go. And that seems a shame to me.
I really didn't enjoy the second episode.
Oh well... not for me, I guess (no big shock there).
The writing and dialog really is just not for me.
It's not even bad in a campy zombie B movie (Which is not what I desire either), but it was just bad (to me).
Very poorly thought out and not delivered very well (Not the acting mind you... All of the acting has been fine if not excellent). Just in the script writing and such... too many times I am saying the line in concert with the character... cringing as they say exactly what I am saying mockingly.
Again, that could be okay if it was just a touch different, but I can't really enjoy the serious aspect of it when it is being delivered in a way that is just robbing the fun from me.
Hehe, ah well... I am glad others have found a fun show to watch for themselves!!
I do want to say that I did love the legless zombie in the park of the first episode... both in introduction and in revisiting. I thought that was some good stuff there. And the zombified wife as well.
While the sense of smell thing seemed a bit too simple and barely plausible... It still made for some fun and so I can't count that as a negative.
Still... I've seen enough to know that this show will only annoy me more than entertain me.
I'm a bit saddened though, because -after watching the bulk of the first episode- the idea of a gritty, dramatic zombie apocalypse weekly series was rather thrilling... And now... I feel as though I am without it.
It just seems to me that it is clinging to very typical and poorly thought-out elementary plot points with sub-par dialog and it takes too much away from the reality that makes such intense/insane situations so fun.
I've tried to be nice with my sharing of opinions, because I know many people are enjoying it. And that's great... for them!
Wish I was too!
I'll just have to play through my own zombie apocalypse! -

Quote:Personal opinion here, but I think it would be most wise of them to include options that allowed for various takes on that, beyond what you said there and jiving with allowing concepts of greater technological tools at their command. But, to focus on one part of your post in particular: "Natural/unpowered characters, or weapon users, etc... doesn't really fit the theme for my golden age knife-nut adventurer to suddenly whip out an energy blast" doesn't really apply. You're no longer unpowered--you're an Incarnate now, and you're able to do crazy things ala Statesman's overpowered lightning crashes.
The lore shouldn't limit things too much... This game's best attribute is its customization and I think it is always best to allow for that as much as possible.
While I get what you're saying, I hope that the Devs put in some options that allow a player's concept to take shape in some other ways that make them happier and fit their chosen concepts.
Why not, right?
EDIT:
Also... while you are building this stuff, CoH Team, try and make these things that have visuals built with Power Customization in mind.
You know that people will want it... So, if you're building something from the ground up, may as well include that aspect! -
Posi, since you are heading the Endgame content... can you tell us if there will be new dance emotes unlocked through the Incarnate Slots?
*gives Posi a friendly, manly handshake hug*
I was wrong once.
Once!
In all seriousness... Ah, who am I kidding, I lost the ability to be that a long time ago.
Woohoo!
You know, someone else's comment calling the Incarnate levels "high-end gear" sort off sent my mind spiraling into the negative (for the first time) about all this stuff coming to CoH.
However, after a few moments, I realized that the lack of competition in acquiring the shards and whatnot really removes a lot of that negativity...
This is something we can all do on our own pace, without interruptions or the drudgery of spawn camping and whatever mmorpg staples you want to include in there... This is the character coming into their own, through their own training, focusing, building... And no farming and selling or buying and whatnot...
This seems to be covering all ground pretty well on "paper".
Nice job thus far
And I am eager to give this a try!
translation: Woohoo!! Cool! -

Hrm... as far as I know, all of the Mayhem/Safeguard temporary buff powers had their visual effects removed several Issues (years?) ago.
Not sure about some other mission arc power though...
It may not help any, but I am curious... does it go away if you toggle WALK on? -
Haha... And here I thought Hydrofoil_Zero mistakenly took a joke post seriously... But I was wrong!
Well, IonMattrix, I'm not knocking your idea, because I'd actually enjoy some sort of game with super extreme kills (I've actually had a horror monster/psycho-killer/action-hero/villain game plan for a while now)... But I'd never want to see that for CoH!
Still, I'm not saying such a thing wouldn't be popular or fun.
I just don't think this is the game to turn into that. At least... not officially.
*sets his time machine to 1831, remembering how long it took to get situated enough to start sorting through time cards last time* -
Quote:I knew this before I got it, but I also really wanted short versions of the capes and am disappointed that they didn't include them.Bought it, loved the aura, but i'm pissed that the capes don't come in long and short. I actually feel ripped off on that fact, cause I was expecting to have long/short choices.
I mean I wouldn't complain if they were part of an update, but to pay for them seperate, I'm pretty disappointed.
I keep finding myself wanting a short Impervium Mantle.
And yeah, they are all long and no short option, Mr. DJ. I believe, Mud_Lark's point was that they wished the pack included short versions as well. -
Quote:*clicks Self Destruct*In the Powers Round table, I was in, we asked about power pool and APP power custimization. They said that any pool power custimization is on a burner, they are just not sure which burner it is. front or back
As for the topic of Pool Power and further Power Customization...
Feel free to chime in over here if you haven't yet. be blindly irrational or completely reasonable, but voice your thoughts on how important or unimportant it may be to you!
I don't know... anecdotal observations from the forums and/or in-game friends are just anecdotal observations from the forums and/or in-game friends... But still... I'm growing more and more confident in thinking that most players want customization of all powers pretty badly...
And less convinced that it is my own obsession coloring my analysis!
WANT!!! NOW!!!!
Oh... and...
Quote:As long as they turn the burner on and start cooking i don't care all that much which one they use. -
The other thing with all of this talk about an "alien" origin...
What about all of the faeries, elves, other-dimensional and other-worldly beings?
Would this proposed origin lump Elves and Kheldians together?
Again, the Origins aren't based on anything other than what that character did, does, had-happen-to-them to attain/use their most prominent powers.
Could a wider slant be taken for origin types? Of course!
Do the existing five origins cover everything? Yes!
Would adding one more narrowly-defined origin help anyone other than someone who wants to have their origin specifically say "alien"? I don't think so and haven't seen any indication as to how it would.
Far be it from me to want to inhibit someone's idea of fun, though. I just don't see any compelling argument/basis for the suggested change. -
Quote:Yes indeed!...
*edit*
You know what would be simplest? Let us type in our own origin. Alien? Be my guest! Gadget? Why not? Kumquat? Err... Yeah, OK.
Type it in, pick the inherent power... be on your way, thankyouverymuch!
That would be great.
Yeah, if the argument is "I would prefer..." that's one thing... but the fact is that the existing origins cover all things (without any one of them being narrowly specific) and, most importantly, they are not based on the being's race, home or anything... it is not a birthplace origin... but the origin of the power that the character uses to fight crime and/or commit crime and so forth.
A mutant who's only mutated powers were to change the color of their eyes at will, but uses an advanced power suit to fight crime would (based on the system) best be classified as a Tech Origin.
An expert martial artist who discovered magical gloves that allow him to shoot bursts of energy at will would properly be classified as a Magic Origin.
A small being from planet Xzenon who uses advanced gadgets to create and/or manipulate gravitational fields, fly, teleport and heal wounds would best be classified as Tech Origin.
Another being from Xzenon who was one of the slave races and trained to fight as soldiers in the wars, who uses their brute strength to rip apart their foes would best be classified as a Natural origin. Unless they were enhanced through scientific means, which could lead to a Science origin.
Why would being alien matter?
What about a human who was abducted as a child, raised on another planet where they honed their physical skills under a heavier atmosphere and returned to Earth with a greater power than humans could normally aspire to?
Sure, he'd be natural (if no scientific/mutation/magical enhancements were undertaken)... but then again, that is not a natural environment for a human... That's literally an alien environment.
Anyways... this is silliness...
No one likes my natural aura of cigar smoke? -
I would have enjoyed flying out for some fun out there, but it isn't going to happen this weekend.
I hope everyone has a grand time and do post pictures of the David Nakayama sketches please!
Be safe and have fun!! -
I just wanted to chime in with my opinion that I see zero need for an alien origin. And actually think it goes against the nature of the origins themselves...
I don't see the origins as being human-centric at all. I am not sure how/why that has been brought to the table (Just because of certain story arcs?).
The origins are based on where a character's power comes from and/or how the character's power is achieved.
We all know that some characters could technically be a number of origins... one example being mutants who use technology... blah, blah, blah, etc. etc. and you just have to choose which one is the greater aspect of their power or which one you think represents the character best.
Besides that the Natural Origin clearly states that the character's powers may just be a part of that race's natural abilities...
The idea of an alien origin seems entirely odd to me as, the way I see things, humans can be aliens too.
That, of course, is because I do not see things from a human-centric view at all.
One last thing... It is my opinion that the write-ups for the Origins at character creation hold more validity than anything else in the game simply because that is there for anyone and everyone to read before they even enter the game.
This is the information chosen to be the explanation.
Anything else that may contradict it, to me, would easily be inconsistencies that come from a multitude of writers and diverging ideas/concepts... a natural element of large collective collaborative projects.
The again... I truly don't care much about these specifics, as broad baselines and such are far better for fitting everyone's creative imaginations into a collective without shunting or limiting things too much. -
Quote:Do eeeet! This is completely and totally incredible. I often get inspired by the costumes I see to try different things and come up with my own spin but I seldom see one I just wish I could rip off outright. Well done.
And I won't be ripping it off...but I really do wish I could.
I honestly didn't feel like the costume was that original or anything, I may not be playing this guy (I have way too many concepts and not enough time) and lots of trees look very similar!
And thank you! And thanks, Bass, both for the kind words and the fantastic costumes.
I especially love the Elven Ranger, but all of them are beautifully done.
I have a new design using the tarot aura... I'll grab a pic and post it when I can! -
I had made an Ent-ish character just a week or so ago...
And finished him with the Cape and Aura over the weekend.
May re-roll as a Plant/Thorns Dominator and go Blueside, as I messed around with some power customization and was liking the results.
-
Hahahaha... Not intended to be... But his name is Super-Jerk... And he does like to wear a cheap Statesman rental costume he stole... And a black (instead of blue) one he had made especially for himself after breaking out of the Zigg.
However... I can see how some might think that, haha... That is kinda funny!
-
Oh... And as for a Natural Aura...
Besides the obvious jokes, hehe...
I actually have two characters that use this (Which could be worked out better and made into a "Natural" aura):
I only have pics of the one (and first) character that I use this idea for:
The Smoke Head aura, colored well enough, works pretty well in combination with the cigar.
It looks best when moving the head around a bit.
P.S. Smoking is bad and stupid and only supers can do it. -
Not an issue at all...
Every single origin has a wide variety of possibilities and no small sample can cover it all.
People complained about the Martial Arts Booster being a poor representation of the Natural Origin as well.
Relax, Frances.
On another note...
I did think of another type of cape that could be included under a natural origin theme (that goes along with the OP's expectations of natural origins)...
A leather cape, possibly with pockets and such.
A lot of the low-tech types that some think of as good examples of the Natural Origin could use some more pouches and pockets for putting all of their stuff.
Plus, the leather material can be sort of a more down-to-earth style for a non-flashy type (if it is old Indiana Jones type leather... not pleather type stuff...)
Oh well... we'll just have to get some more stuff for free instead!!
