-Urchin- the Grim Gaze is a nice one on that list (a few are, that one is just my favorite, I suppose).

You had a one-time rename for your global. You must have changed it, because they don't tell you or give you a choice before logging in with your first character.

Mine worked out okay, I suppose (I've never changed it).
I made a villain named Zethustra and grew attached to everyone knowing me as Zeth in globals... Even though I rarely ever play that character.

    Then and Now.

    Great idea for a thread...
However, both my main and my first character have the same outfit!

    ChristopherRobin...
True story, my good friend finally took my advice and created an account and joined the game...
She wasn't sure if the laptop she was using at the time could handle the game, so she quickly made a character...
For some reason... Named Dorkus1... Because (of course) Dorkus was already taken......
    Haha...
And, of course, I told her that you can never change your global name and she would forever have that as her public global handle.

Look, I'm completely in favor of purging names on inactive accounts (level 50s and all) and I agree with plenty you said in response to Stryph...
However, the statement of mine that you quoted holds true.
    There are iconic names available.

Whether or not the one any given person wants for any given character is available is a different story.

I believe "next to impossible" is a touch hyperbolic.
However, it is true that the more widely accepted iconic names are far more likely to have already been gobbled up.
Yes, it is often surprising when you find an iconic name that is free, but it still happens.

No question though, there are far less than there were 6+ years ago.
And there is a finite number... However, some finite numbers are higher than we'd sometimes think.

There are a wide variety of iconic words and adjectives (or other appropriate pairings) that have not all been used.
Whether or not they fit what a specific person is looking for for a specific character is a bit of luck.

Another thing... I used to play another game... a long time ago... in a galaxy far far away...
Before the dark times... And their official policy on holding characters was... after your subscription is up... you might lose your characters.
I don't think anyone ever did lose anything that way, but they made zero promise and had it listed as their policy. If you're not paying, don't count on us retaining your characters in our database.
Losing names after 2 years absence, to me, seems less of an offense and more of a graciousness that they kept my stuff alive.
That's just my opinion though and that's all.
  5. Yep, if it is cost affective for NCSoft to send out emails in conjunction with the purges (And I always thought a perpetual rolling of name purges, like the global channel time limit thingy, was the right way to go)... I think email warnings/advertisement is a great thing.

I do think that the locked up and unused names can cause a little bit of a negative introduction to new players trying to create a character with a name they like.
Of course, that is not always due to unused names... it's a part of the naming system here (which I like over the other method of duplicate names).

Again, it's not a matter of creativity nor better or worse names... It's generally a case of happenstance and the reality is that there are a lot of names that are locked up in inactive accounts...

And, for as many players that do return to this game... There are more that do not. As odd and stupid as those player must be... haha, kidding... sort of.

So, both sides of the creative/non-creative/are names/aren't names would do well to back off of any rigid stances.
    There are iconic names available...
There are desirable and creative names locked up in never-to-be-used-again accounts.

You're all wrong, because you're all right. And vice versa.

Oooh! Super Kite/Para-sailing travel power! I want it now!
They might want to choose a name other than Super Kiting!

    Swinglines!

I have to admit, while I do wonder how bad it might look if fully free swing-line traveling were in this game...
I'd like to see it just so all the reactionaries that post hyperbolic remarks in the suggestion threads would have to deal with it, hehe.

It is so easy to come up with completely CoH-World justifiable reasons/laws-of-physics/science/technology/magic/wackiness for such a power.
However, whether it would look good is debatable... and, of course, would always remain as a matter of opinion.

    About the engine limitations...

I am pretty sure they have said, outright, that recognizing the world surfaces as sticking points is basically not possible.

I'm pretty certain that any idea of actual grappling-hook/anchor points on real objects/buildings is completely out.
And yeah, that is why wall crawling and surface climbing (for super speed) are not possible (or too difficult/time-consuming, to be more precise).

The other possible limitation, which I am not sure about...
The seemingly simple aspect of having a line connecting to a frozen spot in the game-word, while your character moves and the line only swings.

I'm not sure that this is possible with the game's engine.
It seems like a simple sort of thing, at a glance... However, having an effect and/or object emanating from a character to an invisible point, anchoring to both objects and animating a swing is something that might be out of reach for this engine.

If that is not the case... I'd like to see what could be done for such a power.

Oh, and I like some of those power pool ideas.
However, yeah, the rope-pull attack has been said to not be possible.
Possibly by using an invisible pet on the opposite side of the enemy that then performs a knockback (creating the illusion of you pulling the enemy towards you).
However, I'm not so sure that could be made to happen (invisible pet spawn point being a possibly major problem... to line up right for it to look like you pulled the enemy).
And... if effect/objects cannot attach to two points, as I wonder about above, then there's that as well.

Still... I find the concept and genre staple (no, not the stapler) interesting and I'd love to see some attempts. Even if it is a no-go as the end result.
  10. And Blasters are now caught up with this and have the same fly speed as everyone else?

    I keep meaning to check...
  11. Whether it is harder or not is irrelevant to me.
I've long had the opinion that character names on long inactive accounts should become open for the taking. I've come to think 2 years is more than fair.

As to the regular discussions about the ability to name (or not name) your character...
It comes down to happenstance and personal tastes.
Were the names you wanted taken and/or did you find ones you're happy with?
    That's it.
My ability to find names that I've been completely happy with is not something I care to wave around as some skill.
I have better skills to wave around.
Like my ability to acquire a terrible sore throat yesterday...

Steelclaw: 2) "Yes, but since they're illusory the damage she heals won't be real... it's genius!"

    Leader: You're phantom army!
Steelclaw: 1) "Wait... you can SEE them? The guy who sold me this power said they were PHANTOMS... what a rip off!"
Steelclaw: 2) "Wow... I bet Masterminds must really love you..."
Steelclaw: 3) "Hey... you're one of those time-travelling team leaders aren't you? You know... the one who travel backwards in time so they think the proper way to manage a team is to warn people what not to do AFTER they've already done it."

Steelclaw: 1) "And I've seen intelligent and effective leadership before... doesn't mean it's ALWAYS true."
Steelclaw: 2) "Really? Then do you see the gremlins too? Please tell me you do... they've been stealing my left socks."
Steelclaw: 3) "Well huh... I have an idea... why don't we just sit here and watch her and see if she is able to heal off them? We can even make a wager about it... just to warn you though... if I win my winnings are going to involve your mouth and some duct tape."

Leader: Yes really, now please unsummon them.
Steelclaw: 1) "I can't unsummon a summoned pet without the Kick option... pass me star so I can get rid of that troublesome team member for us..."
Steelclaw: 2) "You know... you really put the Task in Task Force... and I don't say that about just anyone."
Steelclaw: 3) "Sorry... I can't just this moment... I have to SB the tank."

  16. It's funny... But I hadn't even noticed that Mondo had posted earlier in this thread...
I think I will continue with that mindset.

Sorry... I'm a trifle deaf in this ear, you'll have to speak up next time.

  17. So, how can we tie this all back up into the original topic?

We're all too crazy to agree or disagree that the developers are crazy.
And how they and their introduction of Trapdoor-like content is crazy could be because of all extremes and all variables in-between.

All forums and all discussions are fruitless endeavors only proving humanity's great insanity and all topics should be dropped, but are not due to our inherent insanity.

    Anything else?

The O.P. is insane! And so are YOU!

Example; I was editing my Blaster the other day. The major tweaks were a few to the overall body structure and a lot of facial tweaking. The guy has all five costume slots, all of them filled. He has three where face is important. It was an almighty pain to transfer the scales of the corrected costume (#2) to the other two non-helmet slots (#3 and #4) because it involved saving the first file, then going to the second costume to edit and loading that, then resetting everything except the face. Now, that would be fine, but the reset buttons DON'T reset colour. So I had to ckeep flicking back and forth to make sure everything matched up as it should be.

All of that hassle could be averted if the scales could be saved as a seperate file, much like power customisation offers the option to save all, just primary or just secondary. That doesn't seem like a ground shaking thing to try and achieve, does it?

Oh, and I can't open costume files. I don't know what you need to do so, but I don't have it. Really, this shouldn't even be a problem in the first place.

    I think people understood.
Now that we know exactly what you were trying to do...

I can only help you in one way and that is in helping you open costume files.

You just need to tell it to open up using a simple text editor (notepad for windows... not Microsoft Word).

So, I'd go into my COH folder, into my costume folder... and open up the techbotalpha.costume file and choose to open it with notepad.
Once you let your operating system know what program those files should be opened up with... you can just double click them right up into notepad (or its equivalent) every time.

All that being said... Yes, it would be nice to be able to do it simply through the game. Load up these saved scales and replace the old ones... voila!

    I couldn't agree more.
Jumping right into an SG can be harmful to your own fun and problematic for yourself. It might be a bad/wrong fit and/or might pull you too far into hiding within a small, segmented clique... preventing you from finding more stuff with plenty of others!

Regardless, rushing is never a good idea. And there is plenty of fun to be had without an SG.
Taking your time is a great thing. You want to find a good fit, not just in theory, but in actuality. Play times, play styles, chemistry between characters and actual players... so on and so forth.

And, by the way, Chrysame is one of those exceedingly great RPers I have enjoyed the opportunity to play with.

I think it comes down to pet peeves of those who are truly literate. They want to RP in the form of a story where asterisks aren't used. So when they observe the astericks in the back of their mind they think the defendant is "new".
Well, I agree and understand up to the point of calling some "truly literate", even though I think I understand your meaning in this case (more so that they enjoy their RP to appear and be read more so as a literary work).
I think some would paint me as such an RPers, but I never have a problem with using quick and dirty (not that kind of dirty) ways to get a point across.
I happen to be a real time sort of a fan of RP. Nice pace to back and forth (not to mention the *actions* can be seen in any channel you use it in AND sometimes I prefer to add it into a single message, rather than put emotes in-between messages or always write out what the character is saying within an emote).

    As far as literariness...
This is what I am saying... I have RP'd with some of the best who've used a mix and match of either/or approaches to emoting and it is not clunky nor any such negative experience as some have suggested, hehe.

Anyways, not like we're not arguing about it. It just comes off to me as entirely a peeve thing, as you mentioned.

It's just that I know some rather skilled writers (novelists even) who use asterisks to include actions.
We can use actual emotes, actual controlled movements, animations, maneuvering and powers and any sort of writing to indicate a great number of things.
Listing something that peeve'ish as a general rule, in response to the OP's questions just makes it untrue.

I usually don't discuss such things on the forums, but it was listed as a generally accepted rule of thumb in a place I've never once seen it brought up in the game and seen it used throughout my entire time of playing here.

Things may have changed a few times, but certainly when the Science Booster came out and allowed for changing model types and such.

Sort them by date and/or re-save a bunch in game now and test on those.

    Best of luck!
