  1. This thread needs more pirates in it.

Now playing: ALESTORM- Wenches & Mead

Suspect the Tannersville Inn may be:
    (a) concealed frontage for Matt Miller's secret underground lair. (NB: if said wench is wearing spandex/velvet, it's a hero lair: if it's leather, steel or latex, either he's evil or it's his weekend lair.)

    (b) akin to Meeting Room Five in my old ITV days (the Steam Packet pub on the corner).
  2. STOP code is 0x0000007F (might be more zeroes in the middle but it rebooted faster than I could type in the netbook)

The Vaio driver patcher thingy cleans off old drivers automatically before putting new ones on, although for some reason until you complete 2nd part of the process it claims you've got a standard VGA (hey, no school like the old school).

The original errors this morning pointed to a fail in nvlddmkdm.sys, which I tracked down and replaced from the stock packages in the DRIVERS folder.
  3. OK. Tried taking it to Tech Guys at PC World - sadly, the guy on the desk today was (as we say round here) less use than a wet fart in a thunderstorm.

I've tried patching in the VAIO-specific NVIDIA drivers from the VAIO support site using their specified procedure. So far all that's done is cause a STOP error during loading. Trying using the proper NVIDIA setup.

My AV is Norton and I scan regularly - also have SpyBotS&D running in background. Could be a zero day infection but I'm quite paranoid about cleanliness these days and try not to wander off the beaten track.

  4. There is something rotten in the state of Dreamy.

Had quite a happy day working on Photoshop yesterday and then doing COH for about four hours.

This morning I was playing for about an hour, when my sound card started looping and the system stopped responding.

Hard booted, everything came back as normal, went back into game.
About five minutes later, same thing happened again. Uh-oh.

Rebooted and this time got weird green lines across the screen as soon as Vista tried to render my sidebar apps, screen held and went to black and... BSOD. Damn.

The fault appears to be related to my NVIDIA drivers, but I haven't changed them lately and this is the first time this has happened. Fans are working fine, I use a laptop cooler, and there's no visible sign or smell of an overheat. (Believe me, having worked in a TV station were I've seen people walk past with video cards that are not merely dead but on fire, I know that smell.)

Only other thing unusual this morning was tried to watch a Windows video and stopped it halfway through - but it wouldn't stop and locked Firefox. In fact, when I rebooted Firefox and pulled it back up, the video tab had gone but I could hear it playing in the background.

I've tried updating the drivers, but either that's not working in Safe Mode or I've got the right ones already.

I've tried running COH Helper - both normally and as Admin - but it can't find my settings, apparently. Any suggestions?

Seriously, custom PCs are only as good as the people that build them and you should get references from people who've had work done by them before. I paid - repeatedly - for that mistake but at least the shop was local and a good deal of huffing and hard stares around other customers meant I was only paying for parts, not labour.

I've always heard pretty good things about Rock Direct, but not uniformly good. Alienware machines look fabulous but are even more overpriced than VAIOs (though not as explodey, and with great service).

  14. DreamWeaver was/is my very first toon (and first 50). Not a bad name for a perkygoth emp/psi healZ0r, really, who was a web designer and TV researcher before getting into srs superheroine bizness.
  15. Just had my credit card referred for fraud and locked and had my bank ring me to confirm I was trying to buy something off the NCSoft Store.

Apparently, credit cards for certain banks will now auto-refuse and lock if the site does not support 3DSecure / SecureCode.

Suggest it's time for an upgrade if you don't want anyone else having nasty surprises...
  16. Just tried to buy the Martial Artist pack with my credit card.

Transaction did not complete and instead I got a pink box saying "Referred".

    What does this mean, please?

41b: Grapnel (LOS-only TP Foe, minor smashing damage, knockdown)

This is also nicely understated yet (multi) functional... Bat-Grapnel (Arkham Asylum)

All look like they could handle multiple clips/functions. Without going into the realms of laser tech, your average superspy/dark avenger/massively gifted archeologist could have everything the Malta Gunslingers have, plus...
    - an under-barrel air taser (hold/stun)
    - welding torch (PB range flamethrower)
    - grapnel gun (TP foe)
    - mini-rocket/flare launcher (those who had an unhealthy interest in SCIENCE! when younger know that these don't have to be much bigger than an AA battery, and also look great taped to skateboards or rollerskates).

    Official Canucks in-game:
War_Witch in Croatoa and Pocket D - both the wonderful, sociable, lovable, wisecracking dev and her in-game 'toon. Clues to her influence are manifold, including the fact that just about every Arbiter is named after an NHL pro (why no Arbiter Gretzky or Arbiter Domi?) and the presence of the fellow below...

Detective Frasenbacker in Faultline - an oddly familiar RCMP officer and part-time superhero who came due south to Paragon in search of his father's killer, and for other reasons too lengthy to explain at this juncture. Listen carefully at the door of his PortaKabin for another small in-joke.

(One of my own favourite 50s, Canadian Maid, is his sister - an MA/Shield scrapper who I made just to annoy all the Cappy America clones when the new set came out. Absolutely loved that set and the character, although the more OCD herding tanks hate all the KB.)

No matter how many times you save the world, it always seems to get back in jeopardy again. I want it to STAY SAVED, y'know? Just for a little bit? I feel like the maid. I just cleaned up this mess, can we keep it clean? FOR TEN MINUTES?
Sometimes I like getting involved in the more personal stories the game has to offer - Maddie Casey's arc in particular. Not fighting to save the world, just one person's world.

This is why my AR blaster is from the National Forestry Service.
Ranger Emily only needs to worry about hurting trees, which take collateral damage a lot better than people do. Well, Devouring Earth aside, but that can be classed as "pruning with extreme prejudice".

...oddly, this seems to work fine with the Witch and Bridal tops. (Hey Jay- we need proper decolletage on the Leather ones too. NOW! *cropcrack*)

Just to get away from the most common superpower for a moment: I've noticed the entire game running faster and smoother since Power Spectrum came out - even getting through a decent sized Rikti Raid this evening with few graphical lockups.

I haven't upgraded either machine (laptop, dualcore, 2GB, GeForce Go7600) or drivers, so I'm guessing there's some processing refinements.
Keen. Please don't spoil it with extra graphical doodads.

I suspect this will come into play in a future issue. Roughly the same time that the lawn in front of Freedom Court in Galaxy gets turned into a beach volleyball court. BAB's training point would move to a referee's chair at the bottom of the stairs.

EDIT: reminds me, I'm not sure realistic physics would be useful here. Even with the slider on average, my toons would need a sports bra welded by the same guys who made the Golden Gate.

...also, none of them ever use Super Jump. Ouch.

...This. I knew I loved Zortel for a reason.

Mind you, having them mentor a n00b would be highly entertaining - especially if they get off the train at the wrong stop and attempt to Brawl the inhabitants of Steel Canyon.

Also: I am to be played by Pauley Perrette and get all the good wisecracks. ciao
