    Odd FPS

I have a similarly specced system (quad core, 9800GTX+, 4GB, Vista64). The whole thing rocks along at 60fps but was occasionally dropping. I traced the problem to a very cpu-hungry task running in the background. It turned out to be one of the bundled tools that came with the Asus Motherboard. I don't really know why it would reduce the framerate on CoH as it wasn't causing the processors to max out but when I removed it from the task scheduler CoX went straight back up to 60fps and stayed there.

    Hope that's helpful.

  2. Hi

I've tried a couple of searches but can't see any previous answers to this question so please accept the usual apology if it's already been asked but my search-fu isn't strong enough to find it.

I've just moved my CoH install from one disk to another (F: to G and everything's working fine except CoH insists on trying to save keybinds and screenshots into the old directory. I've been trying to find an options setting or config file that I can modify to tell it where to send the stuff now but no luck so far. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    To be clear:

If I type "/bindsave" the file goes into F:\Program Files\...\keybinds.txt and I want it to go to G:\Program Files\...\keybinds.txt

    Cheers

  3. Bit late to the thread I'm afraid but here are my two suggestions:

Earth/Storm: Played most of the controller primaries and this one was easily the most enjoyable. Definitely ticks the "makes you feel powerful" box as you have extremely visible holds, great slows, knockdowns and then the fantastic Lightning Storm.

If you're still fancying blasteriness then I can't recommend Psi/Mind highly enough. Again, played most of the blasters (my first 50 was an en/en) and the Psi blaster utterly rocks. Aim + Build-Up + Psionic Tornado + Pyschic Scream and you have knocked down a whole group of mobs and then killed them while they're getting back up again. The only downside to me is the *dreadful* sounds effects (whummummmummmummmummm-p'ting!) and you have to like the colour pink.

    Happy alting!
  4. How come the red names over here never use phrases like "steaming pile of [censored]"?

I think there should be a new PVP zone, with an entrance from Mercy Island and Galaxy City that is specifically for PVP training. You can fight each other, but you can't outright kill someone - when their health gets to a certain point it automatically restores. This way it allows people to learn to fight in PVP, which may make the casual gamer venture more in to the zones. PVE players get a tutorial, so why not create something to teach PVP players as well?

I enjoy PVP, but CoX PVP isn't fun for everyone, and I count myself as one of them who doesn't find it fun and I find it a shame. My first real experience of it was Jedi Acadamey multiplayer (long ago, though not quite a galaxy far away) and yes, you would get the skilled PVPs who would take you out very quickly, but even a person new to PVP was able to stand their ground and play as a well timed force-push would throw someone in to a pit and that was that. Yes, you'd get trash talk, yes it could be bloody annoying at times, but it was fun and someone going in to a zone and being killed several times without an awareness of what's going on isn't fun and doesn't promote PVP. There will always be the 'that's not fair' people and people who view everyone as fair game as they're in a PVP zone but in my view, that's not what kills the fun. What kills it is you don't get a chance to figure out what you're doing wrong before it's too late. If the PVP are as passionate about PVP as the inevitable arguments seem to suggest, then I can't see a problem with a zone where you can PVP, but can't defeat, in order to train people for the real thing. I don't think PVP is a bad thing, far from it, but it needs to be made more accessible in order for it to be fun for everyone, despite builds and IOs and everything else.

    Wow.

    That's a great idea.

    I agree!

Blimey - this thread's actually generating some really great creative suggestions about how to get more people into PvP.

    Loving it!

A suggestion then, to make PvP more accessible: Apply a buff players in PvP zones dependent on their Rep. The lower the Rep, the higher the buff. Now, I don't know a lot about how the Rep system works, but I know the game tracks it. Since there's a badge for 400 Rep, set it so that the buff only applies to those with Rep of 200 or lower, incrementally in ranges of 10 Rep, to provide a +Perc, +Acc, +Dam bonus. Nothing to defence or resistance, because those are Powerset specific - if you're squishy, you stay squishy, but you're still buffed in ways that count. As your Rep increases you are obviously (I assume) becoming more skilled at PvP, so the benefits you gain from being a newbie slowly drop away.

    Loving this.

You could even make the degree of buff zone-specific as well so that us PvP newb's know in advance that if we go into a certain zone we're completely on our own. That would then make it our choice as to when we step off the learning curve!

    Brilliant!

What will make more casual players buy into and enjoy the PvP aspect of the game has to be the key question.

    Couldn't agree more.

Tainted Greek's posts (several pages back) about some techniques to avoid insta-death are the first thing that I've seen that started to unlock some of the principles that, frankly, I probably wouldn't have worked out for myself.

Maybe it's something that can't ever be solved by a game mechanic and can only be solved by having players like TG impart knowledge to players like me?
  8. As a non PvP'er I think the thing that's put me off so far is the lack of a learning curve. CoX is my first ever MMO and I got into PVE at my own pace. The experience was rewarding (on many levels) right from the beginning and has continued to get more rewarding.

I've dipped my toe into the PVP water a couple of times but as a complete novice (and casual player so therefore not really inclined to spend hours offline researching how to "do it") the experience has consisted solely of:
    - enter PvP zone
    - see words "Assassin Strike" appear above my head
    - go to hospital
    - leave PvP zone.

I'd happily spend some time getting into it if there was a way to build in a learning curve. I'm not even sure if that's possible or not but just thought I'd add the perspective of another player who quite likes the idea of PvP but will probably never do it because every experiment so far has been completely unenjoyable.

  9. Brill, thanks mate.

    Must enhance search-fu.
  10. I've had a search through the forums and paragon wiki and can't find any reference to this so I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.

If you click on the books, chests etc in the midnighter club you get some explanatory text and a clue to the next one in the sequence that you need to click. Has anyone managed to work out what the full list of objects is and if you get anything for clicking them in the right sequence?

    Just curious really...

    Cheers

  11. So I've got my spines/willpower scrapper to lvl 30 and he's great fun to play. On a team with a rad, empath or kinetic he utterly rocks but when soloing he's got endurance issues. I haven't taken stamina but I do have quick recovery two-slotted and endurance-reduction enhancements in all the attacks (one each) as they're the most end hungy.

Unfortunately it's still not working when solo so I've got two choices here:

Either respec him and put stamina in

    Or

Carry on fiddling about with the slotting (maybe an additional end redux in the really hungry attacks or some of the toggles as well).

Has anyone managed to make this work or got any advice?

    Cheers

  12. Slightly off topic but Fly Trap has a couple of the most hilarious animations in the game (in my humble...).

Firstly - if it gets held in a tesla cage the dramatic thrashing and shaking cracks me up every time. Worth taking it up against some Freaks just to see it.

Also - the animation it performs when you dismiss it is so over the top it's hysterical. Looks like a very bad ham actor reacting to being shot:

    "Arrgh......you got me......I'm deaded......no really.....arghh....."

    TP the Vines?

    Thanks Filth.

(Hmm - read that back, it doesn't sound very complimentary! )

    TP the Vines?

I've just got Carrion Creepers on my Dominator and I'm loving it but I find it a bit mystifying. It's an AoE power that follows you around?

Can any one give me a bit more insight into what's going on here? What are the rules that it follows? (i.e. do the vines continue to spawn near the casting toon for a fixed period of time?)

    Thanks in advance
