Quote:I'm really finding this imaginative calculations very entertaining.A guesstimate of 50k subs for CoH at this time I think is very generous. Rule of thumb though is you take daily peak population numbers and multiply that by 8 to get close to overall subscription numbers, even saying CoH has 3-5k people on at once is stretching it I think.

Quote:You've essentially made my point. No amount of imaginary popularity or perceived lack there of prevents you from participating on the global channels (or the forums for that matter.)Humans naturally group themselves. Even if it's not a "SG" per se, but SG is just one expression of this. Victory Badges is a group as well, not just a channel. To that extent Victory is a group. SGs are also a form of media as well.
I agree with all the positive you've mentioned but reiterate that membership to a Super Group is unnecessary for any of it. While you can most certainly seek them out in a Super Group, they're more readily accessible outside of one. -
In their current form, SGs are essentially meaningless. While I understand there are those tight knit SGs that are very happy as a group, they basically boil down to a group of friends (or a least a group that likes to team and/or chat together.) Global channels basically killed any need for this. It's easier and faster to just communicate via Global Channels which can be kept open or exclusive.
Super Groups are a signature part of Super Hero lore so we can only hope the Devs will eventually address this. Any character I play frequently gets moved to my personal super group (as in only my characters are in it) for ease of storage. Outside of team night set ups, like Isos or Children of Enos, there's very little reason to be in a SG. -

Thinking back on it, that "weird lag" happened twice during that Synapse TF. The first time, none of you noticed because everyone exited the mission. I kept hitting the mission exit button, but I couldn't leave the mission. I was eventually pushed out when you called Synapse. Second time was when the deaths occurred. Yeah I was pushing things but I had lots of skittles and Dark Regeneration at the ready. I must have hit DR 5 times and it wouldn't go off.
Starting to think it's a problem with my mouse. It wasn't "true lag" as I could still move around and I could see the damage Death Shroud was doing. Folks on Vent got an earful of my profanity though...sorry about that. -
LOL...I freaking love Victory...ROFL

Pretty sure I'll be on my Fire/Fire blaster.

I'm was aware Statesman said that. I would stop short of calling him a liar but I will point out Statesman's perceptions and intents were...odd to say the least. How you can design melee characters that root for every attack and claim PvP was always intended defies comprehension.

A few folks keep focusing on this, but it seem rather unlikely as any sort of joke. The devs already played their April Fool's joke with City of Sidekicks. If they wanted to play a joke, they'd do it on the forums...or an official web page...or Twitter. In this instance, they didn't tell anyone. The only reason we know about it is because some other site found it.
Supperannuation didn't just mention NCSoft patents, it cited Electronic Arts, SCEA, and Konami patents...all filed on April 1st. Now if folk want to believe Supperannuation is pulling an April Fool's joke, I'd consider that more likely...except they didn't report it until April 6. -
Were it not for ToE: +end PROC, I'd likely agree with this. Part of the problem I ran into my current build is I overestimated how effective the PROC would be. I should also have stated the 2.0 net recovery estimate assumed 90% endurance reduction in Dark Regeneration, another area my current build fails at.

Looks similar to my first attempt. Basically unsustainable.

Quote:This comes up in every discussion of this type. Despite some folks adamantly claiming the contrary, I believe City of Heroes was designed with no intention of having PvP. It was something added after the fact and IMHO it's been pounding the square peg ever since. If they do come out with a CoH2 and decide to have PvP (which they almost certainely would) they should do it in a different way. Develop a PvE only MMO and along side it develop a team-based shooter based off the MMO and sold in the same box. Imagine a TF2 like game with CoH AT's and powersets specifically balanced for PvP and the full CoH costume generator. No chance of PvP affecting PvE or vice versa (and no more grinding PvE to play PvP.) Also they should make pigs fly
.
IF a CoH2 is in the works, this could be corrected. Many of the original design decisions can be altered to allow for a more cohesive PvE and PvP game. CoH2 could also release Villains and Heroes concurrently and perhaps avoid the whole Rogue Ilse/Paragon City separation fiasco (to a significant degree what Going Rogue will accomplish.) -
Versus the player base fragmenting over 3 of your competitors titles? You seem to be approaching this from the PoV that the market for a Super Hero based MMORPG is very small. If that were true, how could CoH, CO, DCUO, and Marvel(if such a game will ever happen) hope to make any profit in this area? I suspect all of these developers believe the market is much larger.

Quote:As I understand it, typical MMORPG development ranges from 3-5 years, so yeah it would be quite a ways off. With all the effort they're putting into Going Rogue and the new Incarnate system I have to believe that any sequel would be years off.
Quote:I don't think it's a good move for the game either. Look at AoC2 and EQ2; usually you end up fragmenting your player base, not adding significantly to it.
Quote:I'd rather stay subscribed to a mature CoX game than jump on to a sequel when there will be three other games competing for my business (Marvel, DC, and CO {okay, they already have my business but you get the idea...}). -
Quote:Very true, but CoH has been running over 5 years. They JUST filed the trademark, hence the rampant speculation. I would not surprise me if this turned out to be some preemptive legal protection, but the timing remains suspect.slight problem. Companies file trade-marks for sequels on a regular basis. Filing of a trade-mark means pretty much nothing.
Even with the great looking graphical upgrades of Issue 17, CoH remains behind on character customization, an area it became initially famous for. It's been speculated, this cannot be addressed with the current engine. -
-
Well, it's gonna be all over the forums soon enough, but as always, we gotta have a place on Victory to discuss this. Keep in mind, there is a WHOLE LOT of speculation going on.
Buzz has been created because Superannuation has learned that NCSoft has filed two patents for City of Heroes 2.

NCSofts official response:
Quote:"City of Heroes is a flourishing franchise and continues to be the world's most popular super-powered hero MMO. While we cannot comment on City of Heroes 2 at this time, NCsoft is proud of City of Heroes' success and is looking forward to future product launches associated with the franchise, including the City of Heroes Going Rogue expansion scheduled for release this July." -
Quote:My current approach to Dark Armor builds is to target E/Ne defense first, then S/L. My first attempt was fantastic for survivability but unsustainable endurance drain. RWZ challenge was an absolute breeze except for the fact I was staring at the lost boss for a few minutes, waiting for enough end to attack him. I'm still tweaking.Anyway I'll try planning a build for typed defenses, I don't care about f/c def in any toon I have, even my dm/ea stalker so it may be a good approach to build for s/l and e/n. I tried for positionals because I find it better for global recharge bonuses (although I'm looking at the build now and realizing I'm only at 18% ranged but 22.5% s/l, 20% e/n and 28% melee defs with Hover turned off so maybe I won't have to change a lot of things to get 5% extra energy).
Quote:Worst case scenario I guess I can just toggle Tough/Weave off when needed, I don't want to go with a P. Perfection build till I get more accolades because I found the build way more fun after epics with a ranged blast and the Tentacles -
I've have found any Dark Armor build with out a minimum of 2 EPS Net recovery (recovery - endurance drain) to be completely unsustainable with my playstyle. With out the +end of the Accolades (Portal Jockey and Atlas Medallion), I would find your build's endurance management unsustainable. With the Accolades and with proper DM/DA strategies (assuming you know this; but basically letting Death Shroud do it's work), it should be mostly if not entirely sustainable.
The main problem I see with the build is it lacks sufficient Energy or Ranged defense. I build all of my Dark Armor characters to have a minimum of 25% Energy or Ranged defense. Ideally you'll want Energy defense but Ranged defense covers a large enough portion of Energy attacks to add significant survivability.
With out this, you'll be relying more heavily on Dark Regeneration. With the ToE: +End PROC, fighting in large groups will likely trigger, making DR almost free (with your slotting costing you 9.3 EP.) This is why I say mostly. You will always run the risk of bad luck and the PROC not trigger...several times in a row.
Have you considered focusing on "typed" defense. I'm finding going after E/Ne in addition to either F/C or S/L to be easier for designing effective Dark Armor builds. -
There's always SuckerPunche's online planner, found at the same location. It's not as thorough as Mid's but you can use it online (as in no downloading of a program). Should work on any PC.

Quote:Mild disagreement with Werner here. I've played on Victory since Issue 2, basically since I started playing CoH. Victory is by no means empty, though is certainly isn't as populated as some of the larger servers. Victory is very forum and global channel driven. Virtually everyone...and I mean EVERYONE is hidden. This seems to throw a lot of people off for some reason.Mind you, I almost never team, but yeah, I've experienced very little immaturity in the game. I mostly play on Victory, having mostly abandoned my original home of Virtue. Victory seems fairly empty, with mostly an experienced adult population. Probably not a great place for teaming due to seemingly low population, but pretty decent if that's not an issue.
First thing I do on every new character is hide and remove broadcast from my chat windows. 2nd thing I do one every new character is add all the global channel windows (Victory Forum, Victory Badges, Victory Badges 2009) as well as SG globals. 90% of all teams I play on are formed either on the forums or one of the global channels. I rarely if ever have issues forming or joining a team. -
Thus is largely a none issue. At best, it's an over exaggerated issue. If you feel like it's affecting you, invest in a Achile's Heel: resistance debuff PROC. Just one should to the trick.

Quote:I've never really experienced this, perhaps a different server?Every year or so I reinstall CoH, reactivate my account, play for about a week and get frustrated with the gameplay, learning curve, and in-game immaturity (which is unfair since it IS a kid's genre game) and unsubscribe.
Quote:Looking at scrapper AT because I don't have the time or patience to group a whole lot. I have a top-notch concept for a dark/dark/dark scrapper (as well as what I consider to be the best up-to-date player-made guide on the forums...thanks Desmodos), but each time I've tried CoH I've tried DM/DA and hated it, mainly due to the downtime per endurance-hungry DA powers.
Quote:Out of those two builds:
1). Which has a smoother newbie learning curve?
Quote:2). Which is better for primarilly solo levelling?
Quote:3). Which has a longer shelf-life at end game?
Quote:4). Which has less downtime? (I have a GUESS on this one, but I'd rather hear it from someone else)
Quote:5). Probably most important to my situation, which costs less to make a playable toon as far as enhancements go?
I REALLY like both WillPower and Dark Armor. Both are really strong and fun secondaries to play, but each bring very different tools to game. WillPower is just very intuitive and has the easiest learning curve of any mitigation set I've ever played.
Have you considered Kat/Dark?
