Okay, so what you downloaded is the Updater, which will then download the full client. That's exactly the way it's supposed to work. Now, for the updater getting stuck, do you have a firewall on your computer? An antivirus program? Are you behind a router? All of these things can prevent the updater from connecting.
For firewalls the updater application needs to be added as an allowed program (how to do this can vary depending on the firewall, you'll need to take a look at the documentation for yours if you have one). For antivirus, add the folder that CoH is being installed to as as exception. For routers, the following ports need to be forwarded (again, how to do this can vary depending on your router. Instructions on how to do this with most routers can be found at http://portforward.com/):
All of these ports:
TCP 2104
TCP 2106
UDP 7000-7100
One of the following ports:
TCP 6994 or TCP 13094 or TCP 23094
For future reference, help with technical issues like this can be found in the Technical Issues and Bugs forum for PC users, or the Mac Users forum for Mac users. You can also get help directly from NCSoft Support by going to help.ncsoft.com and clicking on the "Ask a Question" tab.
Hope that helps! Welcome to the forums! -
Quote:Really? Hmm, they've changed it then. The last time I did a fresh install (end of October), it installed the then-current nVidia drivers, but they were basic drivers only....i think they were the 191.x, but it didn't install the nVidia Control Panel, or many of the OpenGL functions...I couldn't get City working without installing the same drivers from the nVidia site. It's good to hear they've changed that, it'll make the next install much easier ^.^Actually, I let it auto install the vid drives on my isntalls and it was full drivers from NVidia that had been Microsoft WHQL approved. Mind you that is not always the most current drivers, but it did isntall non-generic drivers, along with the NVidia control panel.
The drawback I have found is for some hardware that initially it can't find drivers for, to get them installed is a bit of a pain, especially if you remove drivers before installing new ones, (like you should). Win 7 tends to try to auto install pretty quickly. -
Quote:If you have a 64-bit processor you'll get better performance out of the 64-bit OS (and, as Ryan said, all boxes except the Home Basic include both the 32 and 64-bit OSs).I'm not sure if I have access to Windows 7 x64. I'd need to ask around, but from what I've seen so far, the options I have are all 32 bit (isn't that technically x86?). Are you saying there's nothing to be lost by having a 64 vs. an 86 and that the choice is a no-brainer?
Quote:Also, on the note of drivers, didn't 7 search for and download its own drivers automatically upon device detection? I've seen it touted for that in a big way, and indeed, that would make reinstalls infinitely less painful if I don't have to hunt down all the little odds and ends drivers. I don't even know half the stuff I could install drivers for. The big things are obvious - video card, sound card, LAN card, chipset drivers, but beyond that? Ugh, it seems like there's a driver for every bit of plastic stuck on in there.
Video card is the big one...the drivers that Win Update installs for your vid card will be the most basic, and in most cases won't include any of the bells and whistles for gaming. However, 64-bit drivers for 7 are usually pretty easy to find these days, MS seems to have ridden the manufacturers hard this time around because 64-bit is starting to become the standard.
Sound card drivers, depending on the card you have, may work for gaming off of what Win Update installs, or may not...there's really no way to know until you're running it, but again...these seem to be pretty easy to find in most cases, for the same reason as vid card drivers.
The rest should run off of whatever Win Update installs.
Quote:I'm not sure if my processor is 64 capable, but it isn't terribly old. Beginning of this year, let's call it. Intel Core2 Quad, at a brief glance, but I'm sure the CoH Helper will reveal more. I'll post a report when I get around to compiling one. I'd actually need to know where to grab the CoH Helper, though. PlayNC Support recently asked me to use a programme called Game Advisor that seems to be designed to scan for settings pertaining to PlayNC games. Do you know anything about that?
And, as for Game Advisor...not a clue. That's probably a new procedure...really, for the purposes of the techies here on the forums, CoH Helper is more than sufficient for relevant hardware, driver and settings reports. -
There seems to be multiple possible causes to this issue, and no single solution. If you have no AV we're suggesting disabling non-Windows services one at a time through the Task Manager until you find the one that's causing the problem for you.

I've been running Win 7 since the beta, and I've found it reliable and stable overall. Now, that said, there have been a few issues with improperly installed drivers causing City to crash, or not to start at all. If you're going to get Win 7, and you're worried about that happening, I'd suggest that you post your specs up here in a CoH Helper report. There are a few of us now that would be happy to help you hunt down the correct drivers.
Now, on the topic of "Windows XP Mode"....it's really more cost effective for a gamer to get Home Premium, and not Pro. "Windows XP Mode" is a virtual machine running an instance of Win XP under Win 7. It doesn't run anything using the 3D capabilities of your video card, and so isn't suitable for gaming. What it's really meant for is old legacy programs that ran under Win XP, but won't run under the Win 7 environment. Most programs that have issues running under Win 7 right off of a fresh install can be run using "Compatability Mode" (which is included in all versions of Win 7), which mimics all the appropriate settings without opening up a whole new operating system instance.
I'd also suggest going for the 64-bit version of Win 7. Unless your rig is old, you're probably running a 64-bit processor, so even if you don't have more than 3.5 gigs of RAM it will better run your processor.
Happy hunting! If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask! -
Windows Home Premium 64-bit is what I have, used mostly for gaming and programming, and I'm happy with it. The differences between the three can be found here.
I'd like to mention though, the "Windows XP Mode" is not a compatibility mode like under Vista. Compatibility mode is still available in all 3 versions. The "Windows XP Mode" is Win XP run under a virtual machine under Win 7. Not really useful for gaming, because it doesn't use the 3D effects that most vid cards support. It's more or less an emulator. The only time it's really needed is if you're running a really old piece of legacy software. Most programs can be handled under compatibility mode if they don't like Win 7 as-is. -
Quote:Nope, you can definitely activate on a game time card...both of my CoH as well as my Aion account were all activated on game time cards. However, a game card and a game time card are two different things. If the OP has a game card then that can't be used with a box to activate, if I recall correctly. A box and a game card are essentially the same thing, it's just that the card doesn't have any of the physical goodies, and the digital goodies are a bit different. Both, however, need a game time card (which would be marked 15, 30 or 60 day) or a credit card to activate. However, once the account is active using one, the other can be used on the same account for the extra month and additional goodies.I wonder if you can use a game card if you haven't gotten credit for the box yet for lack of a credit card. I know you can play the game using nothing but cards because I have a friend doing exactly that, I'm just not sure how he got it started to begin with.
I do think it is strange that you get a free month with the box but still have to provide a credit card to actually play the game. The last person I got into the game got around it by going down and buying a $20 VISA gift card and putting that in as the credit card. -
Quote:If getting the proper drivers doesn't work (though that is the most likely amd common cause), it's also possible that CoH's default settings aren't agreeing with your lappy. You can either try starting the game in Safe Mode (little check box on the updater), and adjust your settings up from the minimum until it's at a point that it both works and looks decent, or you can try using Tweak CoH to adjust your settings from outside the game. I'd try checking the resolution the game is trying to run in, and make sure it matches your desktop resolution.Follow flashfox's link, and don't make this assumption.
Honestly, quite a few will fire up the system and, if it has video, call it good. Windows 7 does ship with drivers that recognize the nVidia cards, yes, but they're not the most recent or particularly geared towards performance. They'er there to let you see the desktop.

Someone else had this problem recently, but with Win 7. It looks like you've already tried what they did though. Hmm...please run CoH Helper and post the results in this thread so that the techies can take a look for ya. CoH Helper gives us all the relevent info about your system and current CoH settings to make troubleshooting a little easier.

Quote:I'm using a Logitech wireless keyboard, and was using a wireless mouse with it until recently (didn't switch due to problems, i just wanted one with more buttons ^.^). What brand are you using? Do you have any software installed for them? Has the keyboard been cleaned lately?I tried disabling Trend Micro... Playing the game in windowed mode, I didn't notice any window lock up, but I was still having the same issue with ventrillo where I lose the microphone (usually) or microphone and speakers.
I need to try it again in full screen mode and see if the window locks up. I DO, however, notice my system making a "system sound" but nothing happens. It's the same sound I get when I plug in a plug and play accessory (printer, headset, iphone, etc.)
Is anyone else using a wireless mouse and/or keyboard?
Also, regarding Vent and your mic/speakers, Win 7 seems to handle those a little differently than XP did (not sure about Vista). Is your mic part of a headset, or stand alone? Try going to your control panel>Sound and checking the settings. Make sure your mic (or the card it's plugged into) is the default recording device, and the card your speakers are plugged into is the default playback device (and if you're using a USB headset, the headset should be the default communication device). There are also some setting in Vent that can affect both (I had a heck of a time setting up Vent under Win 7 the first time around). -
Yes, the crossed arms jumping animation for Claws and Pistols does look much better. Please keep it!

Runs beautifully on Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Just make sure that if you switch you get the right drivers! Windows Update will install most of your drivers, but there may be a couple that you'll need to get from the hardware manufacturer depending on your vid and sound cards.

Quote:Trenchcoats are available as the three month veteran reward. Once you reach your three month anniversary they'll be automatically added to your costume options.I'm relatively to the game so please excuse me if these are already available.
I was thinking of few things I'd like to see. One being a Trench coat in the costume selection and the other I thought might be interesting is the ability to have multiple appendages, or even being able to play a centaur character or like have Medusa hair.
Just a couple of ideas I had.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone
And, if i recall correctly, we've been told that non-human skeletons have some technical issues that would prevent them from being given to player characters. The closest we've come to date is the Crab Spider backpack of the Arachnos Soldier epic archetype.
For future reference, this type of post is best put into the Suggestions forum. Technical Issues and Bugs is for players helping other players having problems with the game or their computers.
Happy thanksgiving! -
Windows update will give you up-to-date basic drivers in most cases, but there are a few (for example, the nVidia vid card drivers) that you should be downloading from the manufacturer's site in order to get the advanced functions that Windows Update doesn't provide. For the most part, it's just vid card and maybe sound drivers, depending on what sound card you have.

There have been some people that have come to the tech forums with issues, but in nearly all cases those were because of improper driver installations (or, more recently, with AV programs) and not a problem with Win 7 itself. I've been running CoH on Win 7 since it opened to Beta and had no serious issues myself.
-
You could try temporarily disabling your AV...like I said up thread a bit, it looks like there may be multiple programs that are having the same general effect at the moment. I'm leaning towards programs with active file scanners, like AV programs, not interacting properly with recent Windows updates *shrugs* it's all guess work at this point, but one thing seems pretty clear. It's not CoH doing it, and it's not Windows itself doing it.

Quote:I'm glad they got it figured out. I'll try the fix tonight when I get home from school.BAM. Near the end of the thread, there also looks to be a patch that fixes the problem until the next AVG software update.
So yeah, AVG's been hijacking my desktop the entire time. When CoX tries to take back the desktop, Windows says "AVG is in charge right now." Not impressed by AVG, but still, I'll try the patch first before I rip out the AV. -
At this point, while AVG seems to be the most common, I think we may be looking at multiple programs that have the same sort of effect. What kinds of programs or services does he run in the background while he's playing? Anything that does background scanning at all? You could have him try disabling one at a time until he finds the one that's doing it...a pain, I know, but that's really the only way to figure out which one is doing it. Has he tried disabling desktop comp in compatibility mode yet?

If you want to head over to the Tech Forums, start a new thread and post the result of CoH Helper, one of the techies that haunt those forums should be able to give you some help. Sounds like a possible driver issue to me. That program will tell the players in that forum about your relevant drivers and settings so they can help ya out. You could also open a Support ticket with NCSoft and see if they can help you out.
-
Quote:Woohoo! Congratz on getting that figured out!Hah! I got it working for good this time. It appears it WAS something simple, however I decided to revert back to factory settings. After that I VERY carefully applied all drivers, including BIOS and other hardware, popped on the directx runtime install, windows updated, etc. It runs flawlessly now and I have been able to start the game more than once, even after restarting (just to make sure).
So... yeah. Windows 7 isnt glitchy, CoH isnt glitchy.
Lesson Learned: Be more careful with drivers. -
Quote:This is the first I'm hearing about a bug with that, and I had the chiming work for me just last night. I suspect that if there were widespread we'd have heard about it from more people by now, so there may be an issue with your sound settings or drivers. I'd suggest opening a thread in the Tech Forum to see if any of our more tech savy players can help you with this. Please post the results of CoH Helper in your first post, it should tell them what they need to know about your drivers and settings to take a look. I would also suggest filing a support ticket, rather than a bug report, with NCSoft so that they can also take a look at the issue with you individually.A long time ago the "tell chime" stopped sounding for tells received, and only sounds when you send one.
I'd bugged it many, many times. It's never been fixed. -
Quote:Desktop Composition is what runs the 3D environment for Aero. We've already established that it's possible to disable it upon booting CoH by enabling the option to disable it in compatibility mode, however that's not working for everyone so we're now working on hunting down the cause of the bug to see if it can be fixed.if Desktop Comp is a service, you should (!) be able to disable it as an administrator. Of course, with Win7 extending the concept of the "padded cell environment" even further than Vista, there are things that not even the administrator can do, which means tweaking the box to play nice with your legacy apps becomes.... difficult.
That said
NET STOP "<service name>"
and
NET START "<service name>" are very useful when you have services that you want to toggle off and on.
Now, I just got home and tried turning off gaming mode in the Advanced Settings for AVG...no dice, for me at least. Still freezes without either disabling Resident Shield, or disabling desktop comp on start of CoH. -
Quote:I'll try disabling game mode when I get home from school. Catharctic, you said you're on Vista, right? While Vista and 7 are very similar, there are enough differences that what works for 7 users (if it does indeed work for all of us) may not work for you. We may have to continue hunting for you.Messed around a little more. Ironically, I think going into AVG's Tools > Advanced Settings and disabling Gaming Mode did the trick. Only tested for a half hour (I can usually repro the glitch every 30 mins) and had no issues with Gaming Mode disabled. Looks promising, but a longer test will be in order tomorrow.
