My local theater chose not to get this movie. Instead, they got Spy Kids and The Help.
Thanks guys! Been waiting all summer just for The Help and not Conan! /sarcasm -
I, for one, enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick. Though stuff like Crematoria made me go, "Huh?". It was a fun movie, IMO.

Quote:I'd say probably not. They cite the warehouse as being in western South Dakota, somewhat near the Badlands, iirc. They'd probably be using the Rapid City airport as that one has service to Minneapolis, Denver, etc. If you've ever been in that part of the country, you'd know it's the perfect spot for a government installation like that. There's barely anything there beyond cows... There's a reason that SD had a not-insignificant number of nuclear ICBMs in-state at one point.Actually, I'm surprised they've not explored the possibility of a rapid transit artifact. I'm thinking 7-league boots would be good, though it is only a single pair. Not good for a team. Good for emergency help from Artie.
I can't quote chapter and verse, but I do believe the show has referred to airline flights before. I'm guessing that make the warehouse close to Bismark, since being near a small town airport might not be so swift.
This has got me thinking that I need to do a "thoughts about Warehouse 13" thread.
Also, there's an inherent problem with Seven League Boots...namely the fact that one step puts your one foot seven leagues away from the other. If I had to guess about rapid transit artifacts, I'd almost say ninja tabi. Why? The mythological nature of ninja appearing out of shadows to strike at their targets. Namely, an artifact that grants the capability to travel through shadows. Or maybe the bell of the cow that jumped over the moon.

Quote:I was gonna make that joke!I applied to an existing trial account. I didn't attempt to make a new one. If I feel like becoming Yet Another City of Heroes Subscriber I might try to go through the process of making a brand new account. Although even for me these two dollars are starting to add up. I don't want to find myself having to deal with NCSoft collections:

Eh, I saw "New" and Original Air Date 8/20/11. False alarm I guess. Still will watch it since quite probably some Rose and Amy onnit.
-
Looks like the new season is starting up tonight. Got lucky and checked BBCA on my onscreen guide and saw that there was a new one tonight.

Money talks. Those with it can pretty much get and do whatever they want. That includes weapons and mercenaries. It's been that way since money was first invented.

Quote:Um, what? All the talk about a security force and zones around the city is pointless.
Only one of the hostile counrties in the world, would be all it takes. A sold off MIG or even a WWII era sub would end it all for them.
Anti-aircraft weapons will be of little use with incoming missiles, bombs and or torpedeos.
And if that was not bad enough just remember 9/11. There would be no rescue from that.
You can't have a utpoia until you end all suffering for everyone. Someone will always want and be willing to take what you have that they don't have.
It's they way humans are.
"Few restrictions on weapons". You don't think they wouldn't have anti-sub & anti-fighter batteries, radar/sonar, ECM/ECCM, flare/chaff dispensers, etc. in place? The whole thing about being in the middle of the ocean means that any invasion force (or pretty much anything short of an ICBM or Tomahawk) or people wishing you harm would be seen coming from long enough away that it would be dealt with before doing much, if any, damage. -

Blade Runner is one of the most overhyped movies in the entirety of mankind. It is horribly boring and slow. I could only watch it for about 10 minutes at a time before going, "Done". I've seen paint dry that was more interesting than watching Blade Runner.
A new one could not possibly be any worse than the original. -
Shanty town? That would spoil the view! No, the servants quarters will be below sea level. Out of sight, out of mind. Plus, you can make them pay for air! It'll be like the Company Towns of the early 1900s but better!

Quote:So long as it got the point across that they were not in the "real" universe, does it really matter about how expensive it is? I had no problem with it, overall. Not everything needs to be the Escape From Caprica level of SFX, after all.Actually none of those. I am talking about the base effect that was placed over everything to make it look cartoon like. It is a default plug-in for After Effects and is also created in a few other methods and plug-ins. It is just really cheap.
I would rather they take a plugin off the shelf then spend more money than necessary to get the needed effect. If it can keep budget cost down and thus more seasons, even better.

Quote:Technically, it's not a law forced upon the residents of the city. It's a law outside the bounds of the city.No no no. There are no laws in this place. What we have there is merely a ground rule established for the common safety and benefit of all of the floating city's residents. It's quite simple really.

'bout damn time we get new episodes of Young Justice. It's been what, six months since the first ones?

Quote:I'd imagine most of the city would be enclosed with parks and whatnot on the outside. Typhoons would be rough but survivable if the city is built to code...but given the desire to keep building codes out, I'd bet a fly breaking wind would be enough to topple skyscrapers.I don't think anyone doesn't know how a man-made floating isle works.
But until city-wide forcefields like Atlantis had are invented, it will certainly have to contend with severe weather, like a hurricane or typhoon. Or pirates.
Pirates are manageable. The trick is they need boats. Boats are sinkable. Have an exclusionary zone around the city with rigidly enforced lanes of traffic. Anyone steps out of that lane, give 'em one warning and that's it. I'd imagine the docks would be heavily guarded with high enough city walls around the rest to make sticking ladders an unfeasible proposition. -
Thing about these man-made islands is that they can essentially be like Atlantis in Stargate: Atlantis. Namely, you tether-anchor them down to the bottom of the ocean and have a retractable line up on the above-water part. The line can retract or extend to deal with rising water while still maintaining the same position in the ocean. No need to worry about drift or eventually being underwater.

Given that that effect was because of a (probably) extremely limited plot device, I don't think we'll see it again. But dom-Myka was hawt. I had figured that she would be the princess rather than Claudia, though in hindsight, not so much. You know what though? Cheese can be good, and in this case, it was.
Will Wheaton is and forever more will be The Westley. I don't like his character and I wanted to yell at him, "Westley! Get up and help 'em you git!". Which is really weird since I'm not British and I've not even watched that much ST:TNG... Also, we got to see, IMO, a cape-from-The Incredibles moment with Jack and his tie. Figured Senator Wray was going to try for a little power play and keep control of GD. Kinda figured that was why Zane was in there; I don't think he'd intentionally jepardize Jo's chances like that.
Gary has got to be the star of Alphas. He's just a fun character. Not expecting Alphas to get another season (or more), given that Summer Glau is showing up next week. Her track record is not too good so far for shows sticking around once she's on 'em. -
Yes, it is. But since other games are verboten, naming the city without naming the game was as close as I felt I could come. I imagine most people got the reference once they saw the link. But let's end discussion of the digital city at that point. Don't feel the need to get the thread deleted.

Quote:What's to stop said security force from realizing that they could just, ya know, take everything from those rich guys? I mean, unless there's a kill-switch implanted in them to enforce loyalty, it seems like it's a no-lose scenario for those guys.I think we can be sure that if one of these things actually happens they will have a "security force" that will be better armed and trained than most other countries' entire armed forces. Think "Blackwater" times 100.
It's recipe for lulz on an epic scale. Bunch of rich guys who've probably never actually worked for a living with a bunch of armed and dangerous peons (to them). -
The thing they too often forget about living without laws is that it doesn't just apply to you. It applies to everyone else. Soon as they get mugged or what-have-you, they are screaming for protection and "someone to do something".
Course, if yer rich enough, you can buy your own protection and then it just comes down to who has more men and guns. This country (if it could indeed be called that) would be a fascinating study group on minimal, if any, oversight/regulation/etc amongst the uber-rich. Though one could make the argument that they already live like that, just more spread out. -
Quote:Well, Summer Glau is appearing on Alphas next week.I'll be sad to see Eureka go, they better not cancel W13, that is one of my favorite shows, Alphas was showing promise, hope they don't cancel it. The only other shows I watch are Being Human and Supernatural on CW.
That pretty much tells me that the show is doomed to be cancelled after this season. -
