(As an aside, I found it adorable that you called Poison Ivy Pam instead of PI in that last post. I don't know why, it just tickled me.)
Quote:I am pretty close to being in your camp here.Honestly, I think ATs are silly period and I can't say my experience is better for them. I recognize they're good for new players and were intended to prevent them from gimping themselves, and there's definitely value in that, but to me they're nothing but a straitjacket that prevents me from realizing an otherwise reasonable concept, like a character with guns and swords, or a character like classic Iron Man. It's made worse by the fact that 8 years in, the devs have done little to create more ATs to fill those gaps aside from ultra concept-specific EATs, and I don't think they have any intention to.
I wish there was a way to customize build instead of choose a hard AT... If you want to be a def/ranged or a buff/melee or a melee/buff then make those initial choices at the front screen, let some logical scale/cap balancing be set in the background accordingly along with some power selection filters (say specific power choices vary depending upon choices - similar to the stalker differences with armor sets now..). Balance issues would make this challenging, but it would be incredibly dynamic and fun.
I know, I know, not a new idea. But I like it. -
Quote:I'll admit that perhaps I misunderstood your point. I love the tanker description for him though, and it isn't one I'd ever considered for Spidey previous to your mentioning it. Perfect fit, IMO.As I said before, I compared Spidey to how Tankers are, not how they were intended to be or how they are supposed to be.
OKAY, and bricks never means power damage dealer to me.
Quote:And the devs said so with their choices of signature NPCs: Both Back Alley Brawler and Statesman are Tankers, and the offesive prowess of both are well above medicore (and calling Tanker offense mediocre when they are dead last of all the melee ATs by a large degree is being generous on my part).
Quote:The devs started it. Look at the official description for Scrappers. They pretty much spell out that yes, as far as this game is concerned, damage=fighting ability=ability to defeat bad guys. Since the whole point of being a super heroes is to defeat bad guys, what does that say about Tankers being inept at it? Which is why I call them rodeo clowns and walking decoys, because they aren't good for anything else.
Quote:But Batman has blown out Superman's lights on several occasions, which would be an impossibility if he was 20 levels below him. Even old style Void Hunters couldn't do that to Khelds when they're gray.
Citing ridiculous cases doesn't help the discussion. But, humoring things - blew out his lights how? with the kryptonite crutch? I'd say yes, as you mention debuff right after.
Quote:Now, if you want to argue that Batman used debuffs and that he should really be an AT that is a melee debuffer, which IMO is the treatment Scrappers should have gotten, then I'd agree to that. But that doesn't change the fact that Tankers hit like little girls compared to all the other melee ATs and don't even have decent potential compared to Brutes or Scrappers when they should be powerhouses.
Quote:And to go back to my Spidey example, even though he was concerned with protecting others most the the time, he at least was allowed moments of greatness. Like lifting the massive machinery that was pinning him, or shutting down Stark in a 10 second "fight" or going sick house on a villains who threatened his loved ones.
Quote:Much in the way with Supes and the 'World of Cardboard' speech, Spidey has the power under the hood when he needed it and got to flex it when he wasn't preoccupied with 'tanking'. CoH Tankers, on the other hand, can't 'cut loose' because they don't have anything under the hood, except perhaps a nesting chicken.
And that is a fallacy. Heck, tanks are some of my best farmers when I need to gather some phat lootz.
Getting hung up on a couple words in throw away text description when tanks play and defeat things just fine just doesn't hold together as a cogent argument.
The fun thing, is that is just opinions and discussion points as the Devs have defined it as it is. Maybe it'll change some time. Maybe it won't. In the end, I believe your expectations for the specific AT just aren't realistic, and I am sorry you remain so unhappy about it. -
Quote:Take your earlier Spidey example. Your own description pointed out his relatively 'low' damage, but as an SR/ he avoid hits, has crowd control capability, and taunts constantly. I concede completely that he arguably fits the CoH tank model with this description in mind (/SS or /StJ, I'd guess, and pool choices for some other elements if you want to get specific ). Regardless, there are key elements there - 'relatively low' damage because an equivalent StJ/SR scrapper will do higher damage, but less effective in the dodge/durability side and that is a fair game modeling of similarly power choices with a different focus/character. You also made a good point calling on fighting ability, which all characters have (they are supers afterall), but there is a fallacy in equating fighting ability to closely to damage. With game mechanics involved. All of the different powers factor in as elements for consideration beyond damage - accuracy, debuff, mez, etc.Ben Grimm is a US Air Force boxing champion, can lift over 100 tons, has grappled professionally and has years of street fighting experience. The fact that he still pilots suggests that he has retained most of his agility and reflexes despite his rocky form. He is anything but a poor fighter with low damage.
Arcanaville and others have made the excellent observation that level (including incarnate definition) clearly matters here. Rejecting the level difference 'because they are on the same team' is another fallacy. It is not reasonable to assume that Doc Strange and the Hulk hanging out with the Gargoyle (classic Defenders reference) meant that Gargoyle was equal to the cosmic level foes that they may have faced together. And Batman sure isn't going to blow out a sun, but that doesn't stop him from working with Supes. There is a clear distinction in 'level' of power between the characters that has little to do with their supposed archetype - clearly they are sidekicking and exemplaring, so again the CoH modeling is sufficient.

Remember when this thread was actually about I24? -
Quote:Superman is OP and broken, and until nerfed, a bad example for anything. Also, I have to laugh at some of the people that keep pointing out Superman and Thor, the two heaviest hitters and heroic powerhouses of their respective universes, as examples of Tankers in this thread. Because when it comes to threads in the Tanker forum about improving Tankers, those same people deny that Tankers are supposed to be powerhouses, deny that it was the intent of the AT to represent characters like that and insist on keeping Tankers low damage rodeo clowns. Hypocritical much?
Thor is a god,... so again maybe not a good example.Besides I've never thought of him as anything but a scrapper... He's just too cantankerous and has too many scrapperlock tendancies.
I'll actually grant you that Spidey has tank tendancies. At worst a scrapper that took taunt. But, yeah, arguably an SR/ tank. And fits the CoH mold pretty nicely in terms of it, too.
edit: sidenote, I'm with Geko: wolvie is a scrapper and sabre probably a brute. -

Love the whisky reference, nicely done.
I haven't made one yet, but batted these ideas around in my head the other day:
Corryvreckan (was one I grabbed to hold until I level one)
Aqueduct
Estuary (wish I could figure out a way to pair with earth)
Percolator (paired with fire and colored to look like coffee....)
couldn't figure out a good one using the word 'Quaff' -
Nolan has done an excellent job to convey the character of a hero movie. It would be a shame for DC/WB to not have him. It would be interesting to see what he would do with a group.
OTOH, other than Batman I have always found DC to be largely uninspiring and un-fun. So it is a shame that he is getting attached to yet another attempt at Superman, and I hope he stays away from JL. -
I can't make up my mind at all with it.
I made a dark melee for some testing. I love StJ and was going to try it, but I've been running two of those Live so didn't want to mess with with again so soon. Kinetic doesn't feel right with the armor to me, but could be a cool idea.
I like the claws idea - especially if they gave us some sort of organic claw customization.
I thought about Staff, but thought it may look awkward... -

Quote:So, the defining characteristics of tankers are survivability and low damage.............He is a dodge tank. His primary M.O. is to jump around taunting his foes. He's not known for being exceptionally good offensively.
Flash too is not known for being an exceptionally powerful fighter. He is nearly impossible for a non-speedster to lay a hand on, meaning his Super Reflexes are of the utmost caliber. Both the Wally West and Bart Allen incarnations, and to a lesser extent Barry Allen, made extensive use of taunting in battle, therefore he is a Tanker.

I caught it, and yeah, it looks pretty good.
<possible spoilerage if you don't watch trailers>
Interesting switch on who the governor picks up at first... and looks like the season goes deeper into the comics than I expected this year. -
I'd just like to say....

Quote:I asked the question because I am not positive I know what the behaviors or desired behaviors of other players are - I just wonder if having invention access would drive added interest in buying an AH license, and then some new marketeers/crafters would be born who may have need for storage and increase storage sales, etc. etc.I don't think folks store all that much on their person. Keep in mind you also need a separate license to use the market unless I'm mistaken.
The more valuable thing is access to being able to SLOT CRAFTED inventions and the inventions ALREADY SLOTTED.
Would the net purchases/cash flow be higher, the same, or lower? I do not know, but it is an intriguing question. -
I meant tightening free access to the peripherals to inventions - storage capacity, auction slots, et al.
I failed to finish typing that sentence/thought. I agree with you and would not recommend any sort of leveling cap. -
Quote:This got me wondering...There are already so many other limitations in terms of inventory, incarnates, and character slots that I don't see that limiting inventions as well is really all that necessary.
In theory, making access to inventions freely available and tightening free access to the peripherals to inventions - storage capacity, auction slots, et al. could drive incremental sales volume for those peripherals. I wonder how the net would align with the current approach from a revenue perspective? -
Quote:Fair enough, and I agree in general. My concern, OTOH, is how many ppl experience this and don't bother to share on the forums? Hence, the basic thought that some sort of communication improvement may help mitigate this "issue". (edit: which as C&E posted next is a perfectly valid, and probably correct, business decision.)So the devs should manage expectations better? I'll buy that. However keep in mind that the forum is a very small percentage of the people who play the game. Just because it SEEMS like a lot of people are dissatisfied with what they think they're getting and what they do get doesn't mean it's in actuality happening. The forum skews perception.

Quote:This. The OP makes a good point insofar as his return wasn't a welcoming experience, and he shared that with us. That kind of feedback is piling up.
I assume NCSoft wants ppl to return. The number of posts similar to the OP's seems to indicate that something needs to be done to welcome them back better. This may be as simple as some sort of way to notify them explicitly and helpfully about the vet/reward tokens to unlock features. But something to avoid a "wha? huh? that sucks! *walks away*" reaction that appears to be quite possible, and is not really the fault of the player. -
It would be fun to say "These cow pens have gone to the Americans!"...
...but I am not sure that is enough to validate it. -
It will load when ppl get to work in California... patience wet-slingers.

Quote:Perhaps an infinite number of monkeys typed until they got his password and then gave it to someone else who deleted his characters in their sleep. If it isn't a bug then either someone else knows your login and password, or you deleted the characters in your sleep. Those are the only three possibilities.
Or it is a Nemesis Plot.
On-Topic Aside: As to the OP, this is the only instance I have heard of this, so I doubt it is a general bug. Good luck with your petition. -
