The recently-added ability to transmute enhancements was huge.
I didn't use it a ton myself, but it made enhancing powers a lot easier for everyone in the game--casual players could convert unneeded drops into needed ones, plus it upped supply and drove down the cost of those enhancements in the market.
And of course, before that were Reward Merits, which allowed you to save up and by 95% of the enhancements (all but the absolutely most rare) without interacting in the player market at all... and later, those were followed by Incarnate (Astral & Empyrean) Merits, which allowed those participating in the endgame to purchase literally any enhancement in the game. -

Quote:Maybe just a little... >_>There are a lot of great badgers on Victory- youself included but those three I think are obessive about it.
Thanks for including me in your post. I laughed when you said, "We weren't Virtue," and found myself thinking, "but...?"
A suggested addition: "We didn't always have pants, but we had Coz."
I've also been told in the past that Victory is the unofficial "LGBT & Friends" server, but I'm not sure if that's still the case. The reason I started playing on Victory to begin with is that an RL friend of mine (who happens to be gay) told me that's where he and his friends were going to start. -
Probably not a ton of space, compared to the client installation. Art assets (models, textures, audio, etc) are what takes up most of the client, whereas the server software would be almost entirely code.
Of course, Arcanaville will probably pop in here to remind me of something I've completely overlooked, and I will have to wipe the egg off my face. -
Quote:There were plenty of complaints. I made some of them. Heck, even NOW it's still entirely possible to ruin someone else's game experience by being a jerk in a PVP zone. The other night on Victory, a bunch of my friends decided to raid Recluse's Victory, but everybody started to leave when one dude started showing up and trolling everyone's fights and calling people names.Actually prior to I13 PvP worked exactly the same way PvE worked, and it was the time where the population was at its highest (PvP wise) and I didn't hear anyone once complain during that time period about a specifically nasty community. So no, you're wrong.
Also, the pre-i13 PVP (specifically, the fact that PVE and PVP used exactly the same numbers) is why Energy Melee was crippled so badly. So it gets a double thumbs-down from me. -

I guess that makes sense, now that you mention it. My only personal experience with virtual servers was at my last job, where I was able to assist a bit with the transition from "a box for every department" to a single server cabinet virtualizing everything.
If it weren't 4 AM here, I'd have probably realized a bit more quickly that a game with thousands of concurrent connections would have different usage requirements than a company with only 70-ish employees. -
Quote:One thing that would (presumably) be fairly simple to add for a "Gold" membership that I've seen mentioned elsewhere is to include all new power sets within the higher tier subscription. Other options include additional consumables or some number of Super Packs per month, additional Paragon Rewards tokens and/or Paragon Points, advance access to new content, a "gold member only" Double XP Weekend every month, permanent Windfall temp power on all your characters, etc.NEW ACCOUNT CONFIGURATION
Here's what I suggest: add a new account type.
Currently we have (to my knowledge, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) Free, Premium and VIP. What I'm suggesting would be something like Free, Premium, VIP and Gold. All current account types would be there, so players would not loose the options they already have. The new account type would cost more to allow NCSoft to charge more money and allow the players who do have the extra cash to choose this option. As for what the different benefits this new gold account would have, I'll leave that up to others to speculate. But the ideas are out there, like maybe a freeform character perserver for that account, Or personal nemesis.
I'd personally have no problem paying an extra $5 for any of the above, or even an extra $10 if new power sets were included and continued to release every 1-2 months on average as they have been this last year. -
Quote:That was my understanding, too. Basically, all the servers are running on a single cabinet, as one big computer that acts like several computers simultaneously. The cost of deleting a virtual server from that box would be minimal, if anything... once the hardware's been paid for, all you're paying for is electricity, network connectivity and the maintenance worker(s).On the server merge point: It doesn't matter how many servers there are. They're "virtualized" - meaning there isn't physical separation between the servers. They're all in one bank of a ton of hardware, and if a server needs more resources it takes it from the "pool" and releases it again when it doesn't need it anymore. Closing a virtualized server just means that you gutted that community for no reason.

That's nice that you like it. But I and many others don't. It looks clunky and takes up too much room on the screen. -
Quote:Haaaaa, no. I'd have put it as an October release, probably around the 9th, if production were still going on.Something tells me today was going to be the day they released I24.
I'll miss the ridiculous optimism that spreads through the message boards when an issue is on beta. -
I think the vast amount of customization possible was a big part of what lured people in and kept them passionate.
You could make your character look like virtually anything you could think of, and do pretty much anything.
You could build a character to play the way you wanted it to play--case in point, I recently had a discussion with someone about Grav/Kin Controllers. He played his as a damage crazed AoE monster. I played mine as a team-focused buff/debuffer with the ability to lock down foes. And both were completely valid play style choices.
There is so much to like about City of Heroes that the only times I ever really got down on the devs were for adding passive Day Jobs (I still don't get the idea behind rewarding people for not playing a specific character) and for recently giving females all the previously male-only costume parts (note that I wasn't upset about females getting those pieces specifically; I was upset that males didn't get anything in return). -
Plain text version:
Quote:A super group of five heroes (a Blaster, Controller, Defender, Scrapper, and Tanker) decided to have a contest. Each of them bet that he or she would be able to arrest the most foes in one hour. Each hero had a special grudge or vendetta and thus fought a different type of foe (Hellions, Lost, Outcasts, Skulls and Trolls). All of the heroes wore different-colored spandex (blue, green, orange, red, yellow), had a different origin (Magic, Mutation, Natural, Science, Technology), and had a different means of travel (Flight, no travel power, Super Jump, Super Speed, Teleportation). Can you tell which hero had which color, travel, origin and vendetta?
(In case you wondered, the hero wearing orange won.)
1) The five heroes were: the Blaster, the one that wore green, the Natural hero, the one that flew but was not magic, and the one that wore red while fighting Trolls.
2) The five colors were: blue, the one worn by the Controller, the one worn by the Super Speedster, the one worn by the Magic origin hero, and red (which was not worn by the Tanker).
3) Neither the Scrapper nor the Controller wore primary colors. (NOTE: Primary colors are red, yellow and blue).
4) The Mutant liked to wear yellow because it matched the color of his Assault Rifle and Targeting Drone.
5) None of the heroes had an origin, travel power, or vendetta that started with the same letter as their archetype.
6) The Super Speedster held a vendetta against the Outcasts, but was not of Tech origin.
7) The Natural hero (who wore blue) had no means of traveling other than walking at a normal pace.
8) The Science hero had a lot of information about Superadine, and thus went after the Trolls. She was easily able to navigate Skyway City with her Super Jump ability.
9) Neither the Blaster nor the Controller used Super Jump or Teleport.
10) The Technology-based hero hoped to clear out the Lost before they turned into Rikti. The hero wearing blue was afraid of Hellions and thus would not fight them. -
Oh hell YES. I LOVE PUZZLES.

You're the best, MP. -
My favorite character is Chad Gulzow-Man. He's kind of terrible at being a hero, but he just keeps getting up and trying again. He's been a character I've used in stories and RPGs since 1997/98.
And in case anyone's missed it in the other threads I've posted in, yes, that is my real name with "-Man" tacked on the end. He perpetually wears the clothes I was wearing the first time I ever drew him: blue jeans, tennis shoes and a grey teeshirt. The red S was added as an inside joke between my highschool friends. It stands for "Stuff." I'm also fairly confident that Chad Gulzow-Man is the only hero in the entire game who is supposed to have a rattail [hairstyle].
I drew the one on the left in mid 2008. (Wow, time flies.) Had a friend from my SG color it for me, though. The one on the right was probably 2005/06.
If I can find it, I actually have a drawing I did in MS Paint of Chad Gulzow-Man in 1998. Craziness!
Oh, and here's the original in-game representation of the four main Gulzow-Man characters (prior to Null's inception as a Praetorian):
Chad's got the swagged-out Pocket D Jeans on now, though. -

That's the one where you fight all the Tsoo at the end and choose whether to spare their leader, right? I loved that arc! Easton was one of the most well-writtenly unlikable contacts blueside. Totally wanted to punch him in the face by the end.
-
Ugh, you poor man. That must have been so mind numbing.
Super glad you got to live the dream at Paragon, though. As others have said, I hope this isn't the end either... but if the worst does happen, then I hope this experience will get your foot in the door elsewhere and you'll get to continue doing what you love. -
Yeah, HIM. Seriously, **** that guy.
Quote:When I was trying to get pillboxes badges on Ryxx, he would build up dom on npcs, then actually drop enough hold mag to hold me through rooted. Since there was no limit on hold durations, I would just sit there, held, forever. He couldn't do enough damage to actually kill me unless his toxic showed up (if he had grabbed one). So I'd just sit there for a couple minutes before just slow logging out. Occasionally I'd log back in many minutes later, only to find that by the time I completely loaded in, he'd already seen and held me. fml and f that kid -
I'm far from the only one who talked about it, but I'm sure the Paragon Rewards program that evolved from Veteran Rewards was at least somewhat inspired by discussions I took part in.
There are a few things that were oddly timed that I never posted directly about here but was basically "fanfic" on my super group message board. Shortly after Issue 11 was released, I made up an faux announcement for Issue 12, in which Doctor Brainstorm's experiments caused players to be able to respec their power sets and to choose sets that weren't initially available to them (I REALLY wanted Energy Melee for Scrappers, by the way). A few weeks later, BAM... Issue 12 is announced, Doctor Brainstorm's experiments result in Power Set Proliferation.
(I also wrote a Doctor Brainstorm co-op TF/Trial, intended to be launched from Pocket D, which I condensed down into the MA arc in my sig.)
Around that time, I also wrote up some basic design docs for a few power sets, including Dual Pistols (again, far from the first one to request that). Though it took 7 more issues, the version of Dual Pistols we got was very much in the spirit of what I'd written. For instance, I wrote about a power called "Modify Clips" that was supposed to replace the standard Aim/Build Up that was expected in ranged attack sets; of course, the premise of mine was that your next few shots would fire explosive ammunition, and that all your Dual Pistol attacks would recharge 20% faster for the duration. There was also a power called "Execution" that replaced the standard snipe as the most damaging power, with the suggestion that it do more damage the closer you were to the target.
(EDIT: Sorry, that power was actually called "Assassination." I managed to find the write-up I did a little bit ago.)
Other stuff that never got implemented in any shape or form were my suggested Tech Control (control power set), Failed Experiments--aka "Abomination Summoning"--(Mastermind power set), and I think I wrote up something for Gun + Blade Assault (pistol in one hand, sword in the other). I think those could have been pretty popular.
And of course, they flat out said "no" to Power Set Respecs a little while later... -
Who was that douchenozzle that used to hang out in RV with a Mind/Ice Dom that used to herd and confuse Longbow on heroes so they'd kill you and give you debt?
I remember consistently beating the **** out of that guy when he'd try to grief me. And I suck at PVP. -
Quote:You know, now that you mention it, I DO have a villain character who is bent on destroying the entire universe... So he's probably really happy with the way things are heading right now. :/If always complaining about Villains looking like Heroes because of good deed or ''stopping threat'', or working alongside Heroes...
All my other characters, villain or otherwise, would rather see the world still there when they wake up tomorrow. -
I can't even begin to phrase all the questions I have for the lore behind City of Heroes, but there's one thing that's always bugged me:
What's the deal with Primal Infernal and Praetorian Infernal?
We know that they both come from a different dimension (though not necessarily the same dimension), which is where summoned demons are supposed to originate. We know that Primal Infernal's real name is K'Varr D'Shall, and that he was tossed out of his dimension when his best friend/rival T'Keron, who had gone mad with power, botched a summoning spell and fused with its target, the demon Valmaz. Infernal was stranded on Primal Earth, where he assisted the Vindicators as he searched for his friend.
Praetorian Infernal, on the other hand, does not have a listed name, had no qualms about using his demon binding abilities and was encouraged by Diabolique to continue to subjugate demons until he went mad with power.
I have long suspected that Praetorian Infernal was actually T'Keron, sent to a slightly different dimension than K'Varr. Was this in fact the case?
And regardless of the above, what would have been next for Praetorian Infernal, as the only one of the bunch not seen during Going Rogue/Incarnate content? -
