Quote:I can't help but think.
But did you know that Bashiok is tendering his resignation because of this?
They didn't have the wrong guy. They had the correct person, but the wrong address. They had his mother's address. People were leaving notes on the door, she had to turn several pizza deliveries away.
Oh, and eventually, they did find the right address. He's now staying in a motel to avoid the people who have found him.
And to top it all off, I don't think he was in agreement with this in any way shape or form. I don't think ANYONE at Blizzard was. It had to have been the Activision side of the house. However, while he may not have been in agreement, he also didn't think there could be any harm in someone simply knowing your first and last name.
Serves you ******* right. -
Quote:I'm sure there will still be a way to utilize tech support, people with kids need more tech support than anyone!
"Junior just reset my password and my guild was raiding ICC tonight! What do I do???"

Either an email system with a turn about of several weeks.
Or an expensive support line.
Your choices, let them give out your name to every nut job on the net, pay them for several weeks where you can't access your account, pay them while they keep you on hold for an hour or two. -
Quote:Opt out of RealID like that... and you can't use the forums when they change, which means you can't get tech/issue support from Blizzard. You CAN opt out RealID, via the magic of PARENTAL CONTROLS! Simply by setting up the PCs you automatically opt out. Dunno how it will work with the forums, but this will protect you in game.

Quote:Well technically if you don't post on the WoW boards then that doesn't happen. So you've the power and control to prevent it.
Something I think the WoW suits are thinking of, they don't WANT people using their boards. Official forums are costly to run and that place is a dank hellhole. I think all of this is mainly an excuse to let it slide into obscurity and become obsolete.
There is a slight problem there... their in game support often prompts players to post their problems on the forums, if said problem is of a technical nature.
Either that or they can call a fairly costly support line... -
Quote:Actually opting into something doesn't mean that the Data Protection Act is null and void, it's a criminal not a civil act and thus can't be wavered away.Considering that you need to opt-in for your real name to be broadcast, this is a non-issue, though.
Plus, we really have no idea how foolproof this thing is. Chances are, there'll be a workaround found in no time that allows people to portray someone else's ID entirely. Unless Blizzard wants to walk the mile and visit everyone who signs up for their message boards to see if they're the real them at any rate.
Or am I the only person who has a cover ID they've been reliably using online when they don't want to enter their real details and has summarily gotten away with it? Of course you can't use credit cards with your fake ID unless you want to walk the mile and commit a proper crime.
Mind you, I don't even have anything to hide, and more than once I'd have welcomed some internet tough guy to come by and actually try to do what they said they would. But I'm just a rather private person. Kinda relaxed around here, but still.
Secondly it now turns out any players realID is being broadcast in an unsecured format across Blizzards servers and can be picked up by people using the the 'right' add ons.
Thirdly Blizard have stated they will be clamping down and forcing people to use their actual identity for accounts. How they are going to enforce this I do not know, but they seem to be sure they can do so. -
Quote:Can anyone tell me how broadcasting my real name to all and sundry on the web is keeping my information 'with proper security'?
How do I know if my problem is a data protection problem?
You might have a data protection problem if any of the following apply to you:
- You have been denied any of your rights, including your right to see the personal information an organisation holds about you.
- Personal information about you is used, held or disclosed:
- unfairly
- for a reason that is not the one it was collected for, or
- without proper security.
- Personal information about you is:
- inadequate, irrelevant or excessive
- inaccurate or out of date, or
- kept for longer than is necessary.

Quote:Oh noes a bunch of whiny fat lazy gamers may 'come get me'..... if i post something on a forum....
of course with the mentality on this very board, Im in more danger of getting Rp'ed on then in actual physical/mental/social danger. You do not wanna get Rp'ed on......it aint pretty...Im looking at you virtue!!!
No one needs to 'get you' they can however make your life a complete misery, in full anonymity, without having to get their fat lazy gamer **** out of their chair.
Anonymous phone calls constantly?
Police/Ambulance/Fire tip offs at all hours of the day?
Don't forget the massive influx of spam, as you're signed up for everything from Avon catalogs, to hard core inter species porn mag trials.
And why are they doing this to you?
Because you disagree on the correct way to spec a rogue for PVP. -
Quote:Yes either that or kill you, as I said I'm not going to hold the world to my own flawed moral code, and decide that said code is worth more than everyone elses life. So, if some said they were going to kill 20 people a day for every day you used the internet, had fun, smiled, and were just generally happy.
You'd let yourself be miserable?
Doubtful.
Batman is neither responsible for Joker, or accountable for the murders Joker commits.
Just because Batman is Joker's fixation, is no fault of Batmans.
And even if Batman killed Joker, everyone would change their tune, start calling Batman a killer and want him brought in for killing.
If Joker fixated on Commissioner Gordon, should Gordon give up his carreer, possibly never have another job, because Joker has fixated on him?
There's a reason people don't give into terrorists.
The state has its hands tied in the Joker's case, since he's clinically insane (at least the state says so) and Batman refuses to do so, in fact actively goes out of his way to keep the Joker alive.
Difference is we kill terrorists, Batman in this case is not giving into terrorists causing them to kill innocents in reprisal, and then preventing anyone else from killing said terrorists. -
Quote:I would but then I'm not an egotistical monster, who believes that's he the only important person in the world and that my vengeance filled crusade excuses causing the very tragedy I use to justify my actions, in the lives of countless others.A stalker's target knows why the stalker is doing what they're doing. Doesn't give the stalker the right to control the target's actions in even the slightest way. Doesn't make the stalker's actions the target's responsibility.
But let's turn it around: Let's say (and I'm not really saying this, forumites) that I'm tired of this argument and you had better say you are wrong and I'm right, or I'll go kill somebody.
Now you know. I've warned you. What say you? Are you willing to take responsibility for another person's death because you can't admit you're wrong? -
Quote:It's not quite the same thing, because the Joker has told Batman why he's doing it.Well, I've already said that Bruce Wayne choosing to become Batman is a selfish way of acting out his own emotional issues. That's one thing.
But as for "I'll keep killing until you stop," that's still not Batman's responsibility. Again, it's like saying that the object of a stalker's obsession is responsible for what the stalker does. If they'd just gone out on the date and loved the stalker and married them and let the stalker control their life, then their cat would still be alive. It's all the person's fault, see?
In your situation it would be like your stalker telling you "Every time you wear a pony tail, I'll kill people" and you then saying "Well **** that I like wearing a pony tail".
You could wear your hair a different way, Batman could help people another way, he chooses to be Batman, people die because of it, every kill the Joker has made since telling Batman that he'll kill because of him have been Batman's responsibility. -
Quote:Batman could just stop being Batman. Those are all symptoms of the Joker's obsession with Batman. Absolutely none of it invests Batman with moral culpability for the Joker's actions.
He could of become a policeman, officer Wayne of the GCPD.
He could use the vast resources of Wayne tech to build asylums and jails that can't be escaped from. He funded the Watchtower after all in several continuitys.
But instead, he dresses up as a bat and goes around kicking criminals in the face, despite a mass murderer telling him that he'll keep on killing while he does it.
Why because some one has to be Batman? No because Bruce Wayne enjoys it, and when you get down to it he considers himself more important than any other person in the world, just because he lost his parents. -
Quote:Batman stopped during the Dark Knigt Returns comic, Joker spent several decades in a more or less catatonic state. Batman returns? Joker kills an entire audience of people during a televised appearance.Lots of criminals blame their actions on others. Momma hit me. Daddy abused me. I was bullied in school. My boss is mean to me. Society is cruel. Life is unfair. The world is hard.
All these things may contribute to an individual's problems. But none of them excuse or override the individual's responsibility. Everybody has their own stuff to deal with and most people do so without becoming criminals.
Now, the Joker is insane, which is somewhat different. But it still doesn't make him Batman's responsibility. It's like telling the target of a stalker that they shouldn't be so damned interesting.
Batman 'dies' during the current DC run, Joker becomes Saxon Hale, a fairly nice gravedigger and possibly a crime fighter. -
Quote:Actually he is.That assumes that Batman is morally responsible for the Joker's actions. He's not, no matter how many times they do their dance. If you're going to go that route, Batman could equally well kill the staff at Arkham for not tranking the Joker into a coma when he is put away. They bear equal responsibility, no?
Personal morality aside, the real reason that Batman doesn't start by killing the Joker is because it would not stop there. That's a road that Bats knows that he can't ever take even one step down. And the Joker knows it too, which is why he keeps trying to get Bats to take that step.
The Joker is only the Joker because Batman is Batman, he's told him this several times, and it's been shown several other times that when Bruce Wayne stops being Batman, the Joker stops. -
Quote:((Sorry for the delay, not been in a good write-y mood.))
Big Game then pulled apen one of the larger pouches on his belt and pulled out several plastic bags filled with what appeared to be ash. "...And if you ain't willing to take me at face value perhaps you're willing to consider a trade" Big Game tossed the bags of ash onto the counter. Two of the bags had sticky labels on them. One read Claret the other Tally. "Vampire dust. I know you must have a pretty good idea how much this sort of stuff is worth. Tool me up and I can guarantee a lot more of it will come your way."
Tomb seemed a little stunned does he ever shut up? she thought, as Big Game explained his situation. She steeped her fingers, first looking to the vampire dust, then to the prospective client.
Of course you are aware, that our more exotic weaponry will not be part of the deal, at least until your cash flow becomes more solid. The creators of tailored plagues, and cybernetic insect swarms are few and far between, and we leave our signatures in our work, I would rather not give her proof while our transaction is so clearly a favour.
She motioned Big Game to follow her into the elevator.
We will start with small arms she said as they arrived on a floor devoted to what looked to be a firing range, a man clad in a black lab uniform pushed a wheelie cart towards the range.
Or more accurately munitions, in this case micro demolition charges. She said picking up a magazine with a strip of red paint at the bottom, and loading it into a sub machine gun.
There was a whirring, and several dummies appeared on the firing range, clad in various types of combat armour, some pieces clearly police or Arachnos issue. She fired gangster style, letting the kick of the gun slide her aim across, and there was carnage, dummies went flying as armour shattered and sent shards scything through the air.
Each bullet explodes with the force of a standard US army demolition charge; of course you will be facing enemies that wont be phased by such an explosion. She picked up a magazine with orange tape.
Taking aim she shot at the head of one of the dummies in crab armour, there was a dull orange flash at impact, and the dummy was instantly missing a chunk of its helmet and head, a circular bite seemingly taken out of it.
These bullets create an unstable time field on impact, jumping everything in the field forward in time by a week. Of course this wont bother a regenerator, and in a worst case scenario youd have two of them after you in a weeks time. However we offer standard anti-regeneration rounds, such as phosphorus, depleted uranium or toxic ammunition
She picked up an assault rifle, showing Big Game, the loading mechanism for it, it looked like something you would load printer ink cartridges into.
AR Two seven eight, voice locked and with two different loaders, one constructs ammunition, the other will teleport load it from special feeders. Ill provide you with a supply of different ammunition and both loaders, obviously the teleport loader will give you more bang for your books, but make sure you take a construction loader with you, teleportation is so easy to disrupt after all. She said heading back towards the lift.
Some people say the best defence is a good offense, I say its a defence that kills before they get within visual range. Any questions, or shall we head on to the next part of our tour? -
Quote:Super villainess, blight on mankind and general go to girl Tomb, was not in a particularly with it mood, having forgotten the meeting, she was chilling in the armoured lair beneath the Store, one eye on the monitors, the other watching CSI: Paragon City, sitting up sharply she choked on her Cheerios and reached quickly for the intercom.Somewhere in St Martial...
Leaning on the counter and pushing his hat upwards he waited for the proprietor to make their entrance...
Back in the store
One of the store clerks answered the intercom
Squidlwy wid ferble a voice said to him
Ah yes I see. He answered in a cultured voice
widddly squibs the voice said again.
Will do boss. He answered again.
The store clerks then did their best to keep Big Game entertained, offering complimentary drinks, and changing the music to something that would suit him better. After about ten minutes, a quickly changed Tomb arrived. A section of the back wall moving inwards, then sliding apart to reveal an elevator, from this elevator Tomb stepped out, wearing her business clothes, a long full bodied hooded cowl, with metal skull shaped mask, the eyes of which glow with an infernal redness, and the rest of her body is covered with armoured black leather.
Ahhh Mister Game, I am sorry to keep you waiting... she said -
FFM receives criticism, throws hissy fit and removes story.
Op receives criticism, throws hissy fit and removes story.
Heck he even mirrored your whole "Story isn't for everyone, just a select few, ignore it if you don't like it" whines too.

And it wasn't a canon organization I was arguing about, as I later clarified after some time to calm down. It was the explicit godmodding of dev created, plot significant NPC's. I'd of had no problem with it being random members of the menders, or rogue menders, or anything player created. However you used particular NPC's, whose personality, goals and actions are up to their owners to decide, not you. -
Quote:Oh I know I'm a terrible person. You would! oh hooray! let me get on to my MP at once. The nation must be informed!
As for pots, kettles and their similar nature, clearly you can't see the wood for the trees.
I'm just vastly amused to see FFM calling the OP out on exactly the same thing he recently did. -
I find that kind of reverses during a double EXP weekend.
-
We should fall on the side of caution then Shadowe, particularly FFM.
It should be fairly obvious to him that criticism is not taken very well all the time, and since the OP wasn't asking for criticism, he should of taken his critique to PM, or you know not given it.
Given the multi-post format of the thread, it should of been fairly obvious the OP was setting something up. -
Quote:1. I'd prefer some one like Pious to be honest, to certain people, particularly those who never seemed to have heard the phrase "The pot calling the kettle black.1. Pious, you don't represent in any way roleplaying on the Union Server. I resent your attempt to do so.
2. I do not feel that I need to apologise for anything I have posted here, and resent the implication that I do.
3. The more extreme reactions in this thread have been in response to the OP's reaction to criticism. He needs the chill pill.
2. Derailed the guys thread, see point 3.
3. He didn't ask for advice or criticism, by giving it you've derailed the guys thread. -
Courtesy costs nothing, however some people instead go for snarkyness instead.
It would of been preferable, had people given you constructive criticism rather than just sarcastic superiority.
Though your apparent attitude isn't much better. -
Some one is probably going to get flogged for this.
Well verbally flogged any way. -
Quote:The chance of a 20min long debuff is a little much, for any old joe schmoe to be able to put on you.So what I've gathered is that a small, but vocal minority convinced the devs to roll back what was viewed my the majority as a good change for i17. Anecdotally, there is no one I play with who didn't hate the roll back, even if most of them didn't particularly mind the prompt in the first place. I for one hated that freakin' prompt and yelled any all my SG-mates (on Vent, so actual yelling) who kept trying to buff me w/it during a fight to the point they just stopped buffing me w/MF period, which was fine by me.
Obviously, there are ppl who hate being buffed unasked by anything no matter how positive the effects (granted MF has a few drawbacks too). The equally obvious answer is to make all outside buffs optionally prompted--if some of us want to get all the free goodies w/o being asked, let us. If others don't want fugly ice armors to cap their defenses, hey, their loss, er, choice. I don't even see why there's a debate about this other than as an allocation of dev resources, i.e. how big of an issue we, the community think it is. I really hate that freakin' prompt and would consider adding an option a rather high one, but then I value QoL fixes quite a bit.
And did the Dev's ever say that it was a QoL issue that made them change the pop up, and not that it could be exploited to stack multiple MF's? -
Mental Girl is actually a woman approaching her forties, whose powers never really developed above a telekinetic shove. After a brief stint as a teen side kick, it soon became apparant that she'd never make it as a full fledged hero.
She now works in (meta)human resources for G.I.F.T, searches for Mister Okay (She gave up looking for Mister Right, ten years ago), reads romance novels and attends pottery class, she still has her costume in her wardrobe. -
Of course we get the office humour, government is stupid humour, and the loser humour.
A bunch of washed up ex-heroes and people who never made it as a cape, working nine to five jobs, in the hopes they are trying to make some sort of difference, while trying to one up on the other departments?
