I don't see much negative from Incarnates so long as a player can accept that it might not be for them and it's not the end of the game that this stuff will be added. I'm currently playing that market leader you mentioned. Super casually, highest character is 24. I have NO intention to raid there and don't have a problem with that. I play for enjoyment. If it feels like a job I stop. Incarnates don't feel like a job to me. It's fun.
That's the thing though what happens next?
If a person doesn't want/isn't able to, take part in raids and so on, what are they to do? Especially when the next issue is Incarnate gated, and the issue after that? Well they can just leave, seems to be the response from the dev defense force.
Wow, what a great attitude, one I can only hope isn't shared by the devs "Oh you've been playing for seven years. Thank you, now play it the way we tell you to play, or you can **** right off!".
We've done fine without group only progression, we've done fine without 'real' time sinks and gating. Why after seven years have the devs decided to shift the spirit of the game?
Let's look at the market leader, when they add new raid content they add solo stuff as well, so that while raider Bob is getting his Tier X so he can do the raid for Tier X+1 gear, so six months down the line he can raid for Tier X+2. Solo Sue on the other hand is still able to get comparable gear on her own, at her own speed, through new missions or factions or crafting or so on. -
Quote:Well hopefully Paragon Studios / NCSoft will actually do it right if/when it occurs and any Cross Server play also includes a Region/Server List merge.
You see I was hopeful about this, until the whole NDA that actually hid, sweet bum **** all.
The same type of mind that uses 'secret' as a ploy to create hype, won't let a server list merge occur, because it might result in bad PR "City of heroes merges server lists ZOMG CITY OF HEROES IS DYING!" Is the kind of response that is possible, and thus I don't think they'll let it happen. -
Quote:When the 'shiny' has worn off, and you're working night shifts?Think they looked at low population servers while creating these raids and even though we do have a low population EU side, think we're organised enough now that with this new LFG/league system and the low player requirements for the trials that we can say setting one up wont take longer than it would for a tf.

Folks like Sam don't know how good this game is for them compared to other MMORPGs. You posted even half of the nonsense I've seen, folks would tell you straight away to go find another game. Hell, I've seen the devs tell people that. Games built around social interaction are going to encourage social interaction. It's that simple.
Encouraging is fine, forcing it when you haven't done so for seven years is complete bull ****.
Frankly this raid stuff, I think is massively detrimental to the game, why are the devs trying to be more like the market leader, instead of focusing on what made the game unique on the market?
I mean the AE, pretty cool but it has been done before, and the same effect can be had in 'market leader' with the right add ons.
The character creator? If they are going to slow down on adding options to it, or making all the options paid for, then the 'former studio' of this game will catch up with their options, and slightly better layering options.
The league finder? 'Market Leader' did it over a year ago, the latest competing game launched with one in place.
Multi-party fights? Been done since the beginning of the genre.
------------------------------------
This game used to be very alt friendly, but now it is becoming like a generic 'fantasy' MMORPG, choose one toon as your main and do your dailies and weeklies to gear up, don't bother rolling an alt because you'll progress at half speed. -

I've got to say the WoWification of the game is pretty ****, what I liked so much about City of Heroes is that teaming was optional, you could log in and do an arc or two and progress your character even if you were in a bad mood and didn't feel like teaming.
But the Dev's have decided to copy other MMO's and introduce 'weeklies' into the game, I'm surprised they didn't go whole hog and stick 'daylies' in as well.
Oh they should totally add rep grinds in as well, everyone loves those. -
Quote:You bring up a good question, though I'm less curious what they had to hide as I am about what they needed to test so much that the I20 Beta started before I19 went Live. Are those systems really that error-prone? Honest question here.
The match making system, was probably a massive pain in the **** to create. I mean look how long it took the current MMORPG subscription leader to create theirs. -
Is it just me, or can anyone else not see why they needed a NDA?
I mean the match making system is nice, but its been done before.
And multi-team fights are a staple of the MMORPG Genre.
So what exactly were they trying to hide away?
Edit to add:
Bit disaapointed at the lack of 'solo' stuff to be honest, I mean story arcs can be done in a team, but TF's can't be done solo. -
It was fun Bunny et all.

Just want to point out that Mass Effect doesn't have a morality system, it has a choice between politeness and efficiency. It's actually a nice little system that must of saved them a lot of time since instead of writing nine (lol dnd) responses to situations, they only had to write two.
If Paragon your Shepard puts the good of others ahead of his/her mission, if Renegade the mission comes first, even if that means putting a few bullets in people, they'll die if you fail your mission anyway. -
That new game needs a few changes, notably character bios, a few more powers and much better chat interface. Everything else about it is pretty much spot on.
-
Clearly we have experiences in entirely different games design methodologies.

Invention Origin is the official name for them Sam.
It makes more sense if you consider the name as the origin of the enhancement itself, rather than the origin of the player/power it affects. -
Quote:Virtually everything about the game you play except the visual artwork is math. Everything you are allowed to do, and everything that is allowed to happen in this game is dictated by math, and only math. All of the critters, powers, and effects in this game are in a single set of Excel spreadsheets.
The only question is whether the devs control the math, or the math controls them.
<snip>
You are mistaking Game design with Game programming, they are not the same thing. Programming is the maths side of thing, it deals with making a game actually work.
The design side of things isn't maths based, there was never a time where some one at Nintendo said "This new Mario isn't fun enough, add ten more turtles.". There is no mathamatical equation that gives the correct ratio of how many bips to boops will give a good game. -
Quote:All I have behind me is basic math classes I took in college, so I'm asking not arguing.
If part of your design goal is to: Make the player feel like a superhero, how do you reduce that to a formula? Sure you have to come up with some numbers but how do you get to that precision? It seems that:
That feels right to me. Because honestly, who cares whether the math works out if the end product is super fun?
Again, I'm asking. I'm honestly curious for how you would apply math to that problem.
There is no maths to game design.
Fun is not a numerical or algebraic concept, it can not be boiled down into an engineering problem. -
Quote:Your argument renders the forums obsolete, as one of their primary purposes is as a vessel for communication between the players and the developers. Players are communicating their concerns and displeasures, which you seem to take issue with.
Just because I don't get to make executive decisions in Paragon Studios doesn't mean that I, as a consumer, don't have a right to voice a concern. Whether the developers heed it or not is up to them, but I should have the right to voice said concern without having to bicker with other players for my right to do so.
^This
If people never voiced their concerns or displeasure on the forums, well we might as well go back to the days of Jack Emmert. -
The Destroyer are just a nasty group to fight as a Master Mind, it's like they went 'What's that group no body likes in CoV? Scrapyarders? Lets make them low level but keep all their skills."
Seriously there is no need for Big Dogs to have foot stomp at that level. I mean that alone can drop my pets to red health in one use, and when it comes backed up by a blast master with AoE and burn patches?
No way that group should pop up pre-level 20. -
I think you are missing peoples point Claws, no one has asked for a super in depth, well written amazing solo arc for getting notices.
They just don't want the shard trade in method to be so ridiculously grindy and hideously slower than the team method. -
Just make it cost four hero/villain merits and there you go, balanced time wise easily.
-
Quote:Unless they focus more on gimmick fights. My point is, "challenging" and "solo" don't really mix.
If it's a tough challenge, most players are going to need a team, which brings us back to the same "forced teaming" discussion. And the Incarnate content should be a tough challenge.
Incarnate-worthy solo content is easier said than done.
You know fights where you must keep away from the boss, keep the boss away from an area, avoid certain areas yourself.
Alternatively just don't have the solo 'buy' method 'so pants on the head' stupidly unbalanced. Three hero/villain merits with a week long cool down on the purchase, heck make it four or five if you really want to make the team option the desirable method. -
Personally I'd add it as a two or three hero/villain merit reward.

Quote:Right... Because Cole built each sonic pylon himself and does all the maintenance himself, too, just to make sure that no one else learns the secrets of how they work.
No but his administration do.
The same men and women that the Resistance will make sure to line up against the walls and shoot come the revolution. -
Quote:Nothing wrong with people disagreeing. I do find it annoying when people flat-out lie about something and then treat it as fact, and proceed to use that lie as the basis for an argument, however.
Okay this post may come off as a little offensive, but what the hell.
When did you start playing MMO's? Do you even remember when the genre was just for the geekiest of the geeks? When to even level up you were required to have a team consisting of tank, healer and DPS? The holy trinity mean anything to you?
Design of MMORPG's have moved on from there, and this a good thing. You can argue try arguing that it's not, but you would be flat out wrong. Socially and economically wrong.
You want the system to encourage teaming?
It already does, shards drop a lot faster on teams.
Nothing else in the game requires teaming as the only viable option.
Leveling? Nope
The invention system? Nope
