  1. I've always thought that farmers are people who just have a different idea of what is fun to do than I have. I've always respected that there are different types of players. There are studies showing how different things in a game appeal to different sorts of people. Some categorize people in f.ex. Achiever, Explorer, Socialiser or Killer.
I think in these discussions it's important to remember that different people have different goals and different approaches to a game. You can shout as much as you like defending your own preferences as the "true goals" in the game, but if you are speaking to people who are fundamentally different types of players then you will never agree.
That is also why some issues will appeal to some and not to others.

I hope there's room for us all in the game.

I'm the type of player, who took ages getting my first 50, because there were just so many things I wanted to explore on the way there. I knew someone who was set on getting to 50 quickly because that gave him that "WOW-feeling" of getting the powers and so on...
He was probably an Achiever whereas I am definitely a mix of Socialiser and Explorer, if we are to use those terms.

That said: It's definitely a game wrecking feature that it is now possible to get a char from level 1 to 50 in a matter of hours... hours! From what I got from Positron this is definitely not the intention of the game and it is something they are working on fixing. If/how it can be fixed and how quickly is another question.

I used to just avoid the “worst” farm teams – or get bored and quit the team after a couple of repetitions of a mission. I would just mind my own business and get on with what I liked about the game.
I can understand why people get upset about the farming these days though. I don’t know what it is, but it’s staring to bug me. Maybe not the actual farming, but more the constant and in my opinion very impatient farm team requests in Atlas Park. Maybe it’s just become concentrated and more visible so that it seems to dominate the game more than it used to.

But it does not change my opinion: MA is fun, a strike of genius and I will have enough entertainment from it to last me a long time, and I think some of the arcs developed by the players are absolutely brilliant. It opens up whole new possibilities for you to live out your fantasies far beyond character customization.

Others are left bored with i14 and are hoping for other features in the game to be released. Fair enough. You can't please everyone.

I can't help but feel that there is also a small group of people who are just unhappy about everything that is being released, the speed of new features, the bugs that comes with the new features (which was released too slowly) and really seem to be most happy when they have something to be angry about. But I think sadly you find people like that everywhere you go. And all posts that express player's feelings about the game are welcome on this forum as far as I'm concerned. We will never get any wiser if we don't start the debates.

Well at least I won't have to face the security guard that walked in on me while I was changing again. So I suppose that's a positive.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Secretly you enjoyed it, you old tart!

    [/ QUOTE ]

I merely regret not striking a pose with my hands on hips and saying, "Can I help you with something officer?"

Now I may have to go and look up all the old pictures from Flickr that were uploaded.

Difficult to assume a position of authority with your trolleys round your ankles tho

Maybe it wasn't authority he was aiming for with that remark... maybe it was... erm... something else...
  3. It could be a problem getting a fair player rating.

If I created a mission I would want my friends to try it out - and if I tried out a mission created by a friend I think I'd be biased to give it a high rating if it builds on some internal role play/jokes going on that I relate to better than the "outsider".

This would favor missions created by people with many friends instead of missions created by talented mission creators, wouldn't it?

Still we don't know how they plan to get this working exactly yet - it shall be exciting to see!

We did try the whole uniform thing briefly but considering it's nigh on impossible to get a bunch of Elflings to even stand in a straight line, getting them to all dress the same stood no chance!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Oh... just remembered that we actually had a SG uniform at one time (it allowed a little freedom and looked different for men and women).
And in spite of the natural cheeky and anarchistic nature of elflings I actually managed to get a screenshot of some elflings wearing it, while standing in line!

Elflings behaving - you don't see that every day!

So if are there any SG’s like that out there, I would love to hear about them. Or even themed SG’d you have been thinking of but that have not been started.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Elflings have 4 rules for characters that join us. They have to do with look (pointy ears, green hair, minimal height) and name (surname "Elfling").
Was it anything like that you were thinking about?

Elflings been around for 3 years now and I've been posting on here a couple of times about themed groups with not much response.
In my time I've noticed some themed groups, that have been around for a little while, but then I've not heard more about them.
I remember seeing cows (people with while costumes with black dots on running around saying "moo" a lot), the Taxi chars who had yellow and black costumes and would offer TP service in Hollows, and briefly there were also a lot of bee chars around (yellow and black striped costumes).
Of course on villains there's a lot of smurfs, but I don't know if they are organised in a SG.

    Pointlessness

    LOL!
I love the idea of fun stuff happening for no reason. And you have come up with some very good and funny ones!
  7. Thanks for the guide Scarlet!

I must admit what you describe there is something I find hard to do. Not because I don't agree with what you are writing.
I think the main reason is, that I was never so much into super heroes really. When I was a kid I thought they were a bit too silly. (I've come around after but only slowly as I am now into my thirties!)
I think someone mentioned earlier in this thread that Superman really is a rather stupid name. I agree with that, but I think that you have to bear in mind that he was one of the first big superheroes - so it was really quite inventive at the time.

For some reason I can never come up with names that reflect the powerset properly. The ones I come up with I find boring. Also throwing a colour in there makes it sound more plain when I do it.

Usually I make up names that sound a bit fanatsy like or are stolen from/variations of names from fantasy universes. Examples:

    Morwen Xayide
    Morgana Dragos
    Meekha Elfling
    Atlusia Dusty
    Astarte Civire

    - not really very super heroic.

Also I have a sadistic dominator called Sade Elfling after a certain Marquis.

I've been planning for a long time to have a villain called Stagger Lee, from the song by Nick Cave, but I've never really found a good look/powerset for him.

The only toon I have with an alter ego is Identity X.

Another comment to the name creation: My ex's danish nephew has been playing this game, and I think there is probably a lot of kids out there like him... and tbh he's not the best at finding cool super hero/villain names, but he had a lot of fun with it.

Last comment: I have to make a hero called Snurflepants now!
  8. I made this with my ex-BF some years ago... and since this is the season to be silly or something, I thought I'd post it here:

    Merry Chrsitmas

well - you might as well get the few others we also did:

    Themed SGs

Thanks - it was nice to hear somthing about you all.

The Men In Tights sounds like a really funny idea!

I do agree with Pistol that it's hard to keep up "hard restrictions" on requirements for the members.
I thought that the 4 rules of the elflings:

    - minimal height (long legs allowed

    - green hair

    - pointy ears

    - surname 'Elfling'

would be fairly easy for people to accept, as there are no restrictions on powers or origin - but I was wrong!

Despite this we have existed since september 2005, and during this period I have been very strict with people to make our SGs a bit more exclusive and not stray from the original idea. (Maybe that's why they call me the Boss(y) Lady?)
I think the reason we still exist is because we have some very active, enthusiastic and chatty members who have build this whole community up.
None of us knew each other before we started the elfling SGs - but we do now, and we have had a couple of nice elfling meetings (involving a pub and beers and plans for solving the world's problem - in that order).

I'm not sure what will happen to the 4 elfling groups on Defiant if I ever stop playing the game (that's gonna be when I'm around 90 and can't hit the keys nomore), but I think that the other elflings have gotten so addicted to elfling characters that one of the younger could take over my place and run it for another 90 years...
  10. hm...
This might not be the place to do it... and also it isn't even my idea...
and here it comes - the famous: But!

    Midnights,

Since I 1st started playing I have been using Sherksilvers build planner. I have checked out a few others before but found they did not have the full functionality that Sherks offered.

I have now checked out yours having looked through this thread and all I can say is. FLIPPIN ECK!!!!!!

There are no words to describe the sort of genius that could put this together at all, let alone in the brief time since I9 went live!

I almost wonder if this work of art could qualify for entry into the creative genius award, if it is eligible then it's a hands down winner.

    Midnights is a GOD!!!!

    [/ QUOTE ]

That's a good point. Midnight, you should post this in the creative section. You're garunteed nominations.

I can really only support that - I hope that Mids could somehow be rewarded for the big works he's done.
I'm among the fans! So I'll nominate Mids for his

    Themed SGs

    Hey!

I was wondering how many themed SGs exist on Defiant?

    I know about:

    - us of course (the elfling SGs - there are 2 heroic SGs and 2 villain VGs)

    - The Taxi group (if they are still alive?)

    - The Diddys (small characters with the surname Diddy)

    - The Hive (yellow and black striped charaters with wings)

    - The Tramps (scruffy looking characters with the surname Tramp)

    - The Crackdown Kats (characters with feline face and a tail)

If you know about any other SGs let me know or if the info I have on the groups are incorrect please correct me!

I'd like to hear what your experiences with themed SGs are.
It seem to me that they don't last for very long.
Maybe it's because when the 'inventor' of the theme is gone the SG falls apart?
Or is it because people don't like themed groups?
