This has been brought up many, many times, even by me. Conclusion? In theory it sounds like a great idea. In practice, it would not work.

It's just natural selection would eventually drive everyone back to Pocket D. That's what's good about Pocket D. You go in, and you can instantly find RP, good or bad. If there was any other spot people decided to gather, they'd go there, sit around, find lack of RP, and then give up and go do other things, or go back to Pocket D.

As much as I want it to, it just won't work.

  6. I don't get the whole tag thing...

Personally, I used to put "Mature Roleplayer" in my character description. I thought it implies "Hey! This character is rated R! She must swear a lot! She might start doing things that your mommy and daddy wouldn't want you to see! She might rip your head off and describe it in the most detailed way possible about how all that blood sprayed in 92 different directions. She might even tell you how babies are made in incredibly detail!"...but people immediately believed I am actively looking for erotic roleplay.

Many, many, MANY people believe the tags imply what the person carrying the tag is LOOKING for, not the rating of their character to keep away the easily offended. There are way too many people who think:

"All RP" = "MRP" = "ERP" = "Cybersex!" = "Do me, please!"

I just hate that! To me, there is very clear distinction between any two of those.

So I removed all tags from my bio and replaced it with "Roleplayer" or some goofy alternative.

The D never had this problem. People interested in Erotic Roleplay, Cybersex, or other similar activities are present in any virtual, social community. However, it's kindda like the issue between theists and atheists. It's just that people who do engage in such activities, generally tend to keep it to themselves and their like-minded friends, not bothering anyone else (unless by accident, like a mistell), while the opposite group tends to try and enforce its ideals on them through griefing, ridiculing, gossiping, and in general, harassing.

Regardless, now your purpose for this thread is clear to me, and thanks for making it so.
  8. And people wonder why there is Pocket D stigma. Quinz, this thread is exactly why there is stigma around Pocket D. xD

P.S. I know I love XPing and teaming, too. The ga,me itself is awesome, only augmented by the RP, IMO.
You -do- realize that the number of "examples" that disprove the stereotypes are far greater, yes? Or are you trying to simply justify stereotypes for personal amusement?
  10. People tend to dislike Pocket D because it's considered "cool" to dislike the D. It's just human nature. Same thing happened with lots of things in history, the example off the top of my head being Window Vista.

Pocket D does have some weird stuff in it. Soon people started using jokes about the stuff going on in it, and you have the snowball effect, until now, which lots of people think Pocket D is just full of furry catgirls who want to "cyber" with you. It's just shameless exaggeration.

I have met lots of friends in the D. I've had tons of fantastic RP in D. I've also had people send me creepy OOC tells like "hey i wana **** u".

After all this, however, I avoid Pocket D. Wanna know why?

Amazingly enough, the number of people who grief Pocket D, and cause disturbance in the area, and just plainly act rude towards everyone out-of-character PURELY because THEY think Pocket D is full of creepy pedophiles and horny teenage boys, is higher than the actual creepy pedophiles and horny teenage boys.

Some people gave themselves the right of griefing everyone in the vicinity just because they believe everyone in D is ERPing, Cybering, or engaging in some sexual act, which is just ridiculous, hilarious, and pathetic.

THAT is why I avoid Pocket D.

Edit: After reading Red's post in details, I also heavily agree with him.

Doesn't matter anyways because the Virtual XP mode doesn't have 3D video support so no 3D gaming.
Why would you -need- XP for gaming? I don't understand this...

You have to ctrl+alt+del into the welcome screen, then pop the task manager from there in order to close the game. And it means you can't send crash reports.

A similar problem I'm running into is that sometimes I alt-tab out of COH and any program I try to activate also apperas "behind" the game window and I can't get to it. I have to close the game and restart it to open it. This doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, darn it's annoying.
You do realize that that's an nVidia driver problem, yes? Even if it wasn't, I really cannot understand how someone can refuse upgrading their entire system to a more user-friendly, efficient, and streamlined environment just cause they can't send crash reports on a single video game.

Regardless, I would say Windows 7 is really worth the money. It's simply the best operating system I've used, and I've used a lot of them.

It has the user-friendliness and ease-of-access of Macs, without limiting functionality. It has acceptable security (unless you're a high-profile CIA spy, I doubt you'd need to worry about much). I've personally had Windows 7 for several months now, without any sort of bloated anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall program, and I've never had any issues. It is much more stable than ANY other Windows version in my experience, and what's best, is that it is backwards-compatible with almost any software.

Furthermore, if you REALLY can't separate yourself from the almost-decade-old XP, you can download "XP Mode" or something to run it on Windows 7 for when you just need XP. But I haven't had any experience with all that myself.

    See, that's what I don't get...

If the idle pose is the same with or without walk, and if combat stance is the same with or without walk (evident from the jump, when you land), how would the combat animation be different?

That's understandable for flight, as all our animations are different in when executed in air. But I just don't get how that works with Walk. Ninja Run has different idle and combat poses, and we have all our powers enabled with that one...

I guess that's just something the developers can explain...
  16. I'm sorry if this has been answered by a developer before. In fact, I'm wondering whether or not a developer has addressed this...

I'm curious as to why combat powers are disabled while the newly-created Walk power is toggled on.

From what we have right now, we can do all emotes when Walk is active. The idle stance is independent of Walk status and we can jump normally regardless of Walk status. We can also activate the Architect Entertainment power thingy while Walk is enabled.

So what is preventing the developers from allowing us to have our combat toggles on during Walk? Or even use combat emotes?

    Is it a balance issue?

The only thing that comes to my mind are powers that modify the character's movement speed. There are not too many of those powers. Why not JUST disable those instead of everything?

In all honesty, given your current specs, you wouldn't notice a big difference either way.

But if you REALLY wish to spend money, go with the extra RAM. It's a better choice in both long run and short run.

If I were you, I'd spend the extra money on extra storage, or dual monitors!!!

    That sums it up nicely.

    No.

Between the nerfs, super SKing and the fact that AE is still the same old COX when you get right down to it, I don't expect very much from it until the core game is expanded on and those additions make it into AE.

And even then, it will mean there is a whole lot more dev-created content to keep people interested. Which ironically is what we needed in the first place. Putting that in the hands of players in the limited environment of an MMO is just a bad idea.

I'm inclined to agree with you here. But only from the standpoint of player satisfaction. I don't know the economic impact that AE had on the game. I don't know if it was beneficial or detrimental.

From what I observed, it looks like it attracted new players and caught the eye of older players who had departed, bringing both in for a while. I don't know how many of those have subsequently departed and are therefore no longer playing the game. I suspect that the overall player increase due to AE is not that significant.
Well, from what I saw, a lot of people also quit the game due to AE. And when I'm talking about economical and business standpoint, I mean the same time and resources could be spent making something more appealing to a larger portion of the player base. What I mean, is that AE, as it stands, is not worth the resources and time that was put into it (an augmented issue, incredible advertising, partial elimination of an entire issue, etc.)

If you're in a SG with dozens of other people, how feasible is it for everyone to have clearance to edit the base? From that alone, it obviously wasn't some feature that every player was supposed to jump into and do.

The badge system is the same thing. I don't think it was ever meant to be a major selling point for the game that would attract and retain thousands of players. It was just something extra for players to pursue if they were interested. Heck...you just have to play the game normally and you get badges. Accolades you have to work at.
True. Then again, both badge system and SG Base Editor weren't as costly as AE. But yes. You'd be right. I (and the person I was mostly responding to) should've not put them in the same category as something as grand as AE.

AE is fun. When the farms were prevalent (i.e. 2 minutes after i14 launched, disregarding beta) I didn't find it fun. I'd still like it if someone who can would clear up the defunct arcs (i.e. blatant exploits).

I do now however, despite the nerf to custom xp.

Recently, Dr Aeon ran a competition. To me that was the essence of the AE - writers coming up with arcs based around a theme and/or set of guidelines to see where people could go with content. It's how I imagined it could be fun.

I'm also wary of people who use arguments which boil down to: You're entitled to your opinion but you're in a minority, clearly, so I have free reign to deride everything you say.

People who use the AE and people who create for the AE are a minority, RPers are a minority, Farmers are a minority, PvPers are a minority, Badge Hunters are a minority, People who organise TFs are a minority - the list goes on.

There is not, in my experience, anything like a 'Regular' gamer and the term 'Regular' is pretty general anyway, without any description of what it is constituted from. Actually there is - 'Regular' gamers are those decent, salt-of-the-Earth, regular joes who are the target of lowest common denominator marketing and advertising executives across the World. In essence, they're as 'real' as the Nuclear Family and Traditional Values.

So to answer the original question: I use the AE and will continue to use it until the servers are shut down in the very distant future, thankyouverymuch.
Everything you said is all nice and dandy. But you need to consider my post in the context of my general argument. I'm not stating an opinion. I'm stating an observation, and then using facts (feel free to argue these facts) to draw out my conclusion on the whole thing.

    Here's my observation:

AE, 2 minutes after release, was far, far away from what was advertised, and still is. AE was advertised as a tool to allow players to give their fellow players an alternate way of leveling in contrast to the boring, repetitive regular content. At the release, AE gave too much rewards to satisfy that, nullifying one major feature of AE: Storytelling. Even AE writers were constantly complaining that AE was not being used as intended.

Then, a few months pass, and AE goes from an exploitive (I don't call it exploitive, but everyone here seems to do just that, so I'll stop arguing that point for now) tool for farming, to what it is right now.

As it stands, people cannot use AE to BOTH level and enjoy content (which is what AE was advertised as) like they did with regular content. People are either farming regular enemy groups, or enjoying stories with custom enemy groups. Some writers have decided to stick to regular enemy groups for just that: To motivate players into playing their arcs. AE was supposed to promote creativity, not discourage it.

Here are some general facts in the industry, that I have not pulled out of my bottom. I can put a bibliography at the end of my post, but I'm too lazy at the moment. Feel free to argue them, if you wish. It's simply a cost vs. benefit analysis.

    1. If the majority of the intended audience of a game enjoy and make use of a new feature X, then X would be considered a successful implementation of X from an economical, business, and player satisfaction standpoint.

    2. If the majority of the intended audience of a game do not enjoy and do not make use of a new feature Y, then Y would be considered a failed implementation of Y from an economical, business, and player satisfaction standpoint.

From these facts, I've drawn the following conclusion:

AE is a failed implementation of a feature with much more potential from an economical, business, and player satisfaction standpoint, given the above observations and facts.

If you are curious, yes, I also consider the badge collection system, PvP system, SG Base Editing system to be failed features of the game using the same train of thought.

What's funny is that I love collecting badges from time to time. I love base editing. And I think the current PvP is better than the previous one. So yes. The features I enjoy are also considered to be failures from different perspectives. That is because I don't consider my opinion (or anyone else's) to have any value in a debate.

Asocial. Thanks for that. My vocabulary isn't too broad with English not being my first language.
  24. This happened to me too. I made a character with a really twisted and detailed back story, personality, and purpose. In fact, I think it was my deepest character in terms of story behind her.

But then I took her out for a test drive. In the end, I realized that she really has no reason to talk to anyone. She turned out to be incredibly anti-social, and for that, I just couldn't RP her...

So now she's just sitting on my character selection screen as far as RP goes. I still really enjoy doing missions with her every now and then, though.
