When I get around to it...
RaveSpider my Elec/Thermal Corr will be going to the Rogue Alignment. It fits her best. She's not a killer, she's not even perticularly evil. She's a thrill-seeking, pixie stick addicted, theif with a tendancy to commit acts of heroics (ie...if it wasn't for the theiving, she'd be a hero). Already she's proven to be more of a hero than a lot of heroes out there
Heavens Will my Fire/Earth Dom will be going Hero. Her background has always been, that she was just seen as evil due to the nature of her powers over anything else. -
Quote:I have to go with this. I've always looked at the NPCs knowing your AT as an in game mechanic, rather than an in character label. And that last line about the Dominator made me laughIIRC, the first was the last page of the Blue King Comics, which also had Apex referring to his level, and the second from the Top Cow ones was self-referential I think.
And personally I'm not one for using the AT terms in character, and when it comes up it often rankles me a little. Zortel isn't a Blaster. Zortel is a woman in a suit of powered armour that fires energy blasts. Rushmore isn't a Tanker, Rushmore is a patriotic hero who uses his mastery of stone both take and give out heavy damage. Nachtbrecher isn't a Scrapper, he's a former Axis supersoldier who after a trip to Thule gained the magic and technology required to bend darkness to his will.
Though if anyone ever calls Alraune a Dominator, she's going to reply 'I'm more of a switch, actually.'
HOWEVER *to the OP*, if you want to say it's IC to say the ATs...one can always say your registration puts you into a category, and anyone can read such registration. So, having an IC conversation as to your AT is easy to work around (I still don't care for it or like it...but eh).
However, the part that would irk me the most is the assuming you're a villain part. Even if they cross-over meter, one could just as easily say it didn't ICly happen. And there would be plenty of reasons to make the switch, even if the toon wouldnt ICly. I know I have a few concepts that would be better served (and I would love to get) with Soul Storm and thusly Soul Mastery as a whole (even the name of the PPP is better than Dark Mastery...for concept).
the best way to handle it, is do what's best for you. If it's quitting the team because one of the members is to annoying for you, do so. Or say "Whatever" and run with the team OOC.
I know I'll laugh at anyone who says my Stalker is a Praetorian. Nooo...my Stalker is a Primal who went over to Praetoria after hearing of the stories over there. I wanted to try my main as a Stalker versus the other ATs I've tried so far. If I can't start as a Stalker AT in Paragon, that leaves only two options, and Praetoria is just AWESOME, sooo...starting in Praetoria it is (even if Praetorian storyline doesn't account for what I think it should have been an obvious thing...Primal coming to Praetoria. More so when Primal already had visitors from other dimensions already). -
1 in 20 days...so that min/maxing powergamer, has gotten 3 whole PvP recipes in 2 months time without PvPing. That really doesn't sound all that OMGish.
Especially when you consider they have to have paid 400million Influence out in that 20 days and still earned 1000 Merits. Now, doing normal content, say an ITF and a LGTF, and getting just one lucky purple drop (maybe 2) could pay for all that...but they're doing the work for it.
Besides that, most PvP sets really do suck.
They may be good in PvP zones for the additional set bonuses, but in PvE (Where most players play)...they're not.
+3% Defense PvP IO is nice *nod*
-Resist Proc PvP IO is nice *nod*
Panacea has some nice set bonuses (imo anyways) to go with that additional 7.5 RCH bonus (which is only 2.5% more than a Doctored Wounds set).
Purple IOs, one isn't limited to using one toon to build those up and can still stick to PvE.
As for the casual gamer...if they want to load their toon with IOs but don't have the time for TFs, it just got easier...11 missions in 2 days gives them a Hero (or Villain) Merit. So in 4 days time, they just got ahold of a LotG: +RCH IO at whatever level they want!
This system just made IOing out toons with the normal IO sets so much easier.
Purple IO sets are not all that. They aren't. I love seeing those "I have 5 purple sets!" builds that crumble so quickly.
I wouldn't call myself the casual player. I wouldn't call my builds the casual build. However, my SG is filled with A LOT of casual players, and casual players don't need uber DPS builds that can elliminate everything solo.
What I find most casual players want, is a toon that survives better than it does on SOs (or generic IOs). And for that, all you need is regular IO sets, to get +Defense, +HP...sure some +RCH is nice. But having many of those uber +RCH bonuses are only needed on /Regen Builds and ILL/ Troller Builds in terms of "make me more survivable".
Now if you're talking about the casual PvPer. I'd have to say, if they're casual PvPers (like me) then they should already be used to losing.

Someone (I forget who) did the DPS calculations in the Beta thread.
SK - CAK - SK - CK (or CS) - Repeat was the best DPS.
However, that said, you can still use EC in the chain and not be hurting all that much. Martial Arts had basically become a lot like Fire Melee...one top chain, but quite a few different ways to make a chain and not be to far away from the best DPS.
And EC + DT equals more AOE damage basically.
As for what to drop, I'd be a tough choice for me (well I skip TK), as I love the animations (and CAK's damage...I hate it's animation), and wanted to fit them all into my MA/WP for sure.
However if you really want to drop one, I'd say either CAK (worse animation but more damage) or CK (CS gives you the uppercut animation...I coulldn't not take it now).
There's always dropping a travel power though.

Not looking for a tank mage. You're obviously missing the point. Besides that, I have that with a DP/MM Blaster. And I would no where call it a tankmage. In fact, I've found my IOed out Scrappers to be stronger than my IOed out Blaster.
And it's not even about have ranged attacks. It's about having Dual Pistols toon that didn't feel like it had a glass jaw. Which is what a Blastert feels like even with all the IOs. -
Quote:Oookay...Are you suggesting that the devs make an EAT that doesn't have a backstory even though they've explicitly stated that the "epic" in "epic archetype" refers to the backstory of the AT rather than the capabilities of the AT? If it doesn't have an overarching backstory and it doesn't have a real role on a team, what's the point of spending all of the effort to develop it in the first place? And, even more, why would the devs want to arbitrarily make a DP/Armor EAT when they've shown no special proclivity to making EATs that aren't multitaskers of some kind (and a DP/Armor AT would definitely be a monotasker unless it was designed to alternate between ranged damage and ranged tanking) or are using powers largely unique to that EAT (which it wouldn't really do because you're asking for the EAT to explicitly use an existing blast set)?
You still haven't tackled the issue of "what is it supposed to do on a team" either. Just saying "make it an EAT" doesn't deal with that issue. Khelds were intended to be JOATs that could flit between roles (blaster/scrapper/tanker and blaster/controller/tanker) and SoAs are designed to be damage dealers with low maintenance support capabilities. If it's going to be made into an EAT, there would still need to be some justification for it within the confines of the game.
A great mix of Martial Arts and Dual Pistols Attacks (if you have one tier 1, you dont get the other)/Various Armors and Debuffs/Buffs (if you have one tier 1, you dont get the other).
Epic Storyline...A new project of Neuron's that has been copied by the Resistance through other means...Science or Tech background for Loyalists version, Mutant/Magic background for Resistance version...they're super soldiers, weapons of war! -
Quote:I have no travel power on my stalker. I just want to fit in Physical Perfection (the name alone = fits concept) it just being that good is betterWell both in regards to the OPs and in regards to your stalker, it is easy to reach "soft-cap" with the Super Reflexes set (either scr, sta or bru) even with use of Weave. My issue with doing it without Weave is a I don't like simply acheiving soft-cap when there's so many mobs like to debuff defense. I like to go a little above and beyond.
Plus there's the perspective of doing a doing concept toon. I usually tend to play a toon more if it's a concept I create from the beginning and I really flesh it out including bio and level progression that fits within the CoH mythos/universe. But the question always is.. how much are you willing to sacrifice for a concept?
If your concept is a "natural" fighter, then I'm almost always willing to skip the travel power. Makes it a pain for going zone to zone, especially on a tf/sf. But like I said, how much are you willing to sacrifice to maintain both your min/maxing and concept for certain easiness of mobility and such.
Maybe posting what build you currently have might help us where we can "trim the fat" to drop Weave and pick up Physical Perfection for you.

Quote:Hmmm...if that's the case, I have to ask (as my memory could be wrong), wasn't the added damage of the -resist proc, just like the added damage of a +dmg proc?At the moment, the -DEF is not enhanceable. This is deliberate, as the devs did not want to change the sets slottable in CAK (which would have required more testing and design review before being able to release the change into the beta). It might become slottable in the future; its less that I think anyone thinks its bad to be slottable, and more that I think no one is sure its ok.
Overall, the same increase in over all damage, except that the -resist proc could be more team friendly. -
-
Quote:Archery/Mental Manipulation is popular for a reason! Lots of AOE (whether it be ranged cone or PBAOE).I'm looking for a secondary from either Blasters or Corruptors that provides the best ranged AoE damage compared to all other Blaster/Corruptor secondaries. (if this even exists)
Once I get enough opinions I'll make a decision and post a build. If you want to go ahead and post a build of what you have with Arch/ I'll definitely not mind.
While Kinetics won't offer additional AOE, what it does do is bring back your own Primary AOEs faster and gives you a substantial increase in damage.
Cold Domination will give you additional AOE damage with -resist in it, so that's really helpful as well
Dark Miasma will give you tar patch to drop their resistance for your AOEs.
Lots of ways to go with it. -
Well, the OP did say Weave, and not Tough AND Weave.
If that's the case, he can still pick up the Steadfast +3% Defense.
I'd say post the build myself. I know I'm having troubles with my stalker, int he fact that I want to pick up one more power (Physical Perfection...its a great power AND it fits my concept! So it's win/win!)...but sometimes trying to fit in one more power is a PITA! -
Quote:So then, make a Dual Pistols/Armored AT (not a ranged/armored AT)...I'd be okay with it. Dual Pistols moves are exactly what I want to see in Dual Pistol use.The problem isn't making it balanced. The problem is making it balanced while still providing a reason for the AT to exist within the confines of the game (yes, it's a game; concept and theme are all well and good, but when it comes down to it, it's a game first and foremost before it's a superhero simulator). The only way to properly balance out the ability to have ranged capabilities and full on survivability is to drop damage or survivability. If that happens, then there isn't a functional role that the AT plays within the confines of the team beyond "soloer". Every AT fulfills some explicit role (or more than one): damage, support, and personal survival (each AT has some portion of each role to different extents).
If you trade away some portion of your damage or survivability for the ranged advantage (which you would have to do because otherwise you're getting something for nothing), there isn't a point to bringing the new AT because anything it does is done better by the pre-existing AT.
Every suggestion I have ever seen for a ranged/armor AT falls prey to this argument: if you create a balanced version of a ranged/armor AT (balanced both internally and against the existing ATs it would be competing against), there isn't a point in bringing one because whatever it brings to the party is brought more effectively by someone else. The only role it would really fulfill would be soloing, and the devs aren't likely to make an AT that pretty much only exists to solo.
It's because of this issue that whenever I see this suggestion (generally draped in the mantle of "we need it because I have a character concept" rather than anything resembling an actual reason that the game needs such an AT due to a role not being filled), I counter with a suggestion to create an AT that is assault/(armor + support). Even with damage low enough to justify an armored ranged attacker, there is a reason to bring them to a team because they're providing force multiplication coupled with a reason for the AT to actually have higher survivability (because it's designed to spend some portion of time in melee where the higher survivability is actually needed). There isn't a justification within the confines of the game (as a game, not as a superhero simulator) for there to be an AT with the ability to stay out of danger (ranged damage) coupled with the ability to stay in danger (survivability set) because they're both present explicitly to solve the same problem: how to deal with incoming damage.
Set it up as an epic AT without the backstory of HEATS and VEATS.
Praetoria may just be perfect for this. -

Quote:Being able to use Placate + AS in an attack chain would be nice. As it stands now, it's terrible to do that.Uh, you realize that with Build Up this would more than 1/2 of a +2 boss' life in one hit, right?
I'm all for the position that AS takes to long to wind up (as do ranged snipes), but that strikes me as excessive. I'd rather see the DPA improved by shortening the activation+interrupt time. -
Quote:Really, I just want to use Dual Pistols without feeling like my toon has a glass jaw.I could potentially see a mix between the Dominator, Blaster, Corruptor, and Scrapper secondaries to make a "red mage" of archetypes. The Dominator secondaries would become this AT's primaries because they contain a mix between melee and ranged attacks, yet lack the powerful AoE coverage and nukes blasters get.
The secondaries would be an amalgam of existing sets, containing dome defense, some control, some heal/buff/debuff, but at reduced power.
I can envision such a secondary set right now, a compliment to Fiery Assault:
1. Fire Shield (12.5% smash/lethal/fire DR, 5% cold DR)
2. Ring of Fire (control)
3. Temperature Protection (auto, 7.5% fire/cold DR)
4. Smoke (debuff)
5. Plasma Shield (17.5% energy/neg/fire DR)
6. Warmth (PBAoE heal)
7. Burn (control and immobilize protection)
8. Heat Exhaustion (debuff)
9. Melt Armor (debuff)
Combined with Fiery Assault, an archetype of this would be able to fill the red mage role, having a variety of attacks, defenses, and effect powers, but at the cost of not excelling at either one of those. It's a concept I've loved since I played the first Final Fantasy, and I would love to see it eventually happen.
Thoughts?

Quote:I love Tactics as well.I agree that you should be fine for the vast majority of AVs. Yes, Mako will likely be a little annoying, though I haven't done the math. I'm a big fan of Tactics, but if I was JUST after AVs, and if I didn't love the Gaussian set so much, I wouldn't bother.
Edit: I typically turn Tactics off while fighting AVs on Alexei. I'll only turn it on if I notice my last chance to hit dipping below 95%.
I love gaussians as well. It's me looking over my build to try and fit one concept power in.
Thanks for the replies (both of you). -
Quote:I'm fine with my stalker now. Anything I suggested is more of a "I wouldn't mind" type of deal.Stalkers should be squishy.. they need more damage to balance them. More health would just make them less distinct from the other melee sets.
Mind you, I probably won't make as many Stalkers as I will scrappers (as I'll make more scrappers), and in fact will likely only have the one Stalker (unless I decide to make that Ninjitsu one). -
Quote:Not at all. I'm asking for what I watched last night, which was exactly what I envisioned as the hero I wanted to make, when I bought the game. Are you just asking to be trolled by bringing up a singularly pointless dead horse yet again?
I'm not even asking exactly for a RANGED/ARMOR AT.
I'm asking for a Dual Pistol (possibly Dual Pistol and Martial Arts)/Armored AT.
This means, it would STILL be limited like the EATs, except they don't need to limit it to a specific origin or game lore, like they do with the EATs. -
Okay, at first I thought with the addition of Vigilante/Rogue options to go to the other side, and thusly do hero work on one side or criminal acts ont he other. That of course is not the case.
And having done the tip missions, I have to say my namesake is likely to go the hero route judging by all the tips thus far.
So, it has come to me, not that I need my toon to go vigilante to fight crime in the Rogue Isles (after all, Vigilante alignment really just feels like anti-hero), but that we just need more missions setup to fight crime there!
I'm sure more missions to cause crime in Paragon City would be welcomed as well. -
Is that what you consider Widows, Soldiers, PBs and WSs? All four ATs that have Ranged/Armor, but lack what I'm looking for, which is specifically Dual Pistols (which by reading the forums a lot of people consider weak to begin with
Hell, even in game. I'm not one of them btw).
Or are you just trolling? -
...how much +ACC and +ToHit is enough?
Is 60% Slotted ACC, with an additional 57% Acc from Set bonuses, and a Kismet (for 6% ToHit buff), enough to solo AVs and not miss much at all?
How about when they tack on the +Defense (like Mako in a STF)?
Should i just keep Tactics? -
Quote:Haven't gotten started on the other paths just yet, so I've only done the Resistance Warden arcs (I don't want to just make a toon and run the arcs, I want to make a fun toon and run the arcs and actually want to keep them around), so I have to say...the Warden Arc had me feeling every bit the hero. This is probably it. They're trying to avoid portraying either side as "the good guys," so both sides have to do some not-good things. Your character personally has to do these things just to make sure you, the player, are paying attention and can't handwave it away as "oh, well my character doesn't know about all that stuff, I'm totally heroic."
Not once in the Warden arc did I feel like I was doing some not-good things. -
Just got done watching Batman: Under the Red Hood, and all it did for me was think...that's what I want out of a dual pistol hero!
Dual Pistol/Armor AT! PLEASE!
Make it an epic AT!
Dual Pistol & Martial Arts/Varied selection of Defense Powers.
Set it up like the HEATS. Long list of powers to choose from on both sides, ignore APPs (maybe PPPs) and let those of us who've been wanting this type of hero (or villain) cheer!

I think people are mixing the definition of vigilante with what COH defines as the vigilante alignment.
They're two different things.
One could be a vigilante and not kill. One could be a vigilante and still be a hero.
COH's alignment Vigilante is more like an anti-hero. But I'm guessing Vigilante/Rogue sounds better than Anti-Hero/Rogue.
