My newest concern...what is my stalker going to do with the slot I save from getting Fitness Pool free?!
Don't worry! I'll think of something! I'll live with this...concern. ^_^ -
Quote:Then make an INV tanker with blue skin?I don't get the hate for minimal FX for elemental shield types. The reason it may not be visible as an armor is that sometimes it's that the character is made of the element. A blue ice dude doesn't have to be wrapped in a second ice sheet specifically. It's actually less silly than that a set like Willpower could tank alongside Invulnerability.
As for WP being able to tank along side INV, I guess it depends on how you look at it. Do you actually base your concepts purely on the name of the power set?
I know I don't use WP as a "my concept is my toon wills themself tougher" and most others I've seen don't either.
In fact, I see a lot who use the WP powerset, to say INV, because they like WP better.
I use WP as a concept to mix SR and Regen. Agile and Heals fast with a mind that isn't easily cracked and able to take a beating! -
I'm loving my stalker (lvl 46).
That said, I don't see the lack of AOE as a problem. I've made, and I've teamed with single target oriented scrappers and brutes.
Only two things come to mind on how to make my Stalker better more awesome!
Scrapper damage mods and an increase in in max HP!
Other than that, still playing my stalker. Still loving my stalker. Mind you...I'm IOed out on everything but three attacks (need to be level 50 to put them in) and one power (havent gotten it yet).
When i19 hits, my stalker will become even better! When I free up power choices for concept powers! \o/ I even get one slot back!
Fast Healing, Physical Perfection and Fly (or Hover...still trying to decide which one)! The only thing that could make it better, is if I could fit in my self-rez!

Quote:Invisible flame? No Ice on the Icer (tho I hope they do a different FX for this one)?I foresaw this response, and I should've headed it off in the original post.
Make sense? In a game in which people fly and summon demons, etc.?
And Minimal FX for those could actually be minimal. Maybe it could be barely perceptible, but it doesn't have to completely shroud my toon in special effects. -
You know, a better way to do this may be to have a personal Nemesis.
I'd prefere it be kept out of in game lore in it's creation...but basically you go to the AE building, design and pick powers for your nemesis, give a little bio to write up for them, and then they can show up every now and again in missions.
The onbly downfall I see to this, is people making super weak combos so they get an easy win against their nemesis. -
Quote:Oh...I like how there can be only one person with a name. I'm fine with that.I think I only have two toons that have numbers "with" their names but not integrated within their names. For Gemlin I probably would have gone the "e" route. "e" can sound like an "i". So if Gremlin is taken, I would have tried Gremlen with an "e" first. It still sounds that same when you say it. If that was taken, then maybe I would try a play on the word Gremlin. If female, Gremliana or Gremliotta for example. For Males, Gremlock or Gremland or something that sounds masculine.
The thinking here is when and if you change out a letter, make sure if read it will still sound like what you intended it to sound like. Case in point, Phoenix sounds like Fhenix. Domenitra sounds like Dominitra. I would never mix numbers with letters as in your example Grem1in using the "1" to substitute an "l". I see this all the time and this kind of tells me that maybe the OP just gave-up on trying to come-up with a name. Yeah, it may take a bit of thinking sometimes, but if and when you can come up with a good name, it's yours and no one else has it or can take it away. And "that" is what makes the individuality of this game work so well.
I just wish the devs wouldn't allow people with inactive accounts after so long, to keep the names they have.
If they made it between 18-24 months, I think it would be all set. Even more so on some of those names, I've checked on that have no global account name attached to them.
And truth is, using the system that the other game uses, wouldn't stop any of the non-sense, lousy names we see now. I've played the other game, and even with the ability to pick any name you wanted I myself never saw a double.
Now I'm sure there were some doubles, I just never saw them. But I saw LOTS AND LOTS of terrible names. -
Wait!
My hero messes up the timeline! >_> -
Quote:Oh no. I got what you said. I don't just don't think people would see the misspelling of Phoenix any different than they do using a number in the name. Not if people know that the most common names most likely would be taken. Most intelligent people who play MMO's will probably assume that the spelling of Fhenix is a take on Phoenix. Of course I would have used Phoenix if it was available. I think you missed my point on what I was trying to say in my post. I would go back and re-read again what I said and soak it in better.

Gremlin, is taken! Sooo...a person goes with Grem1in. People say they hate it. So why would Fhenix be any different? -
Quote:I actually have no problem with this. But the difference is, your account is active.I can't respond to several different ongoing conversations at once and effectively communicate in all of them.
I'm not sold on name purges.
Chase says it best:
Also, name purges as the devs do them usually do nothing for the person who camps a name with an active account. Even if you purge characters who haven't been played in X number of days, people will still log them for 30 seconds just to beat the system.
And the fact of the matter is, I'm on both sides of that issue:
I'm sitting on a few names too, for when I have the time to devote to launching them/making a build push. I sit on them because I don't want to lose the name, but at the same time, I'd have no qualms about sharing them with someone if I can still use them too.
.
It's those accounts that have been inactive for such a long time, that I see the loss of right to a name.
18 months to me sounds fair. Go up to two years if need be. But, if they're inactive after so long, it's time to free up what some paying customers have been wanting for awhile.
I have a few names that might be considered sitting on them, if for no other reason than, I got them to 50, renamed the 50, and reused the name, but havent gotten back into the toon, so now they sit.
But if I go inactive, and lose the names I had, and then come back, it'll be "oh well" and move on, finding a new name.
Making that a 1-2 year absence equals a loss of name rights, seems to work for me...that gives them a chance to come back after a year or two of new content being added, playing, and then coming back.
If people want to pay 15 bucks every 1-2 years just to name sit, fine, that's money in CoH's pocket, and maybe they'll find they'll stay. Though if they have no intention of coming back, I'd think the smart person would find something better to do with 15 dollars. -
Blasters in general. It's not a lack of damage on my DP/MM that bothers me, it's that I don't see the toon as being so squishie.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my concept and name of my Demon/Dark Miasma MM. She's not summoning demons, she's bringing forth nightmares...however, the playstyle of a MM just isn't me.
Kheldians, it's not the knockback...it's not the losing the outfit when in crab or squid form...it's the lack of slots!
I want the ability to actually play in all three forms, without feeling like I'm hampering one form to make the others work.
I think all I'd need to enjoy Kheldians, is to have all the attacks for Drawf and Nova forms, to be automatically six-slotted, and I can use my level up slots to place in human form powers and Drawf and Nova Form.
If that ever happens, I think I can actually enjoy playing a Kheldian. As it is, I feel the need to stay a human form only Kheldian, and then it just ruins the AT for me. -
Quote:Actually, I doubt it. But even so, at least they came back, checked everything out, then left. This would just result in a wave of people re-subbing a week before the scrub just to secure their name before vanishing again at the end of the month.
Even if they don't use the name any more and even if they had never intended to come back before hearing about the purge, they will return just to keep the name.
That's human nature.
You can see how much people fuss over being asked to just to possibly share a name in this thread. Losing a name even though they never use it? Yeah, they'll pony up $15, some just out of spite. Then they'll come to the forum and complain about it.

.
Some might do it for spite, but I think most would just not bother. -
Quote:It still seems the best way to go about it.Yet you have failed to provide a good reason for it to happen. Cross server teaming can be handled with a simple title under the name signifying the server they could be from. That is an easy issue.
Sever mergers, or heaven forbid single server games, are another issue all together. Yes, at that point they have to add the number or a @hereismyglobal, but then, as is mentioned every time someone drags this dead horse out; what happens when you are merged to a server with fewer slots than you have toons. We all know what happens there.
How about Super Group names. I, for one, would not relish being joined with another super group that shared my groups name.
Yet those are tangents.
Multiple names are very distracting, require loads of work so that when you see two different Johnny Butanes in chat, but can't see either of them, you can tell the globals of each so you report the right one, and break immersion for most people. Now, I will admit that there is a point that someone gone for 3 years or more may not be coming back. But they might as well. I took a year off between a couple of issues a couple of times, due to content being lackluster or the game simply not doing it for me. I know I would be ticked to come back and find my name was gone.
I don't even think we have to go with 1 year. 18 months or 2 years, seems plenty of time for people to have gotten back into the game, checked out all the newness for a month, then taken off again, and save their names. -
Quote:Using your own example, Fhenix, to you, could be imaginative. To others, it could just as easily be seen as poor spelling.I'm going to start this off with a piece I wrote awhile back in City Life - CoH & CoV Discussions Titled "Good Character Names Are Running Out Huh?" by Samuel_Tow
I think one of the funnest parts of the game is in naming your Toons. As you can see, based on my signature below, I have a few toons with very different names. For example, my level 50 Controller Dark Braven, I originally wanted to call her Dark Raven,..and we all know that name is pretty much taken. So, I had to pull up Dictionary.com, spell certain words by removing the "R" in Raven and see what I could come up with. After further thought, I then said to myself, my toon will be Brave and have a Dark side to her. So, I just combined Brave with Raven and got Dark Braven. For my other toon Zambrosia, I orginally wanted to name her Ambrosia, which is greek for food of the gods. Nope, already taken. So, using my Braven technique, I just dropped the "A" and added a "Z" and got Zambrosia. Ta-Da!
I also use a lot of greek goddess names for reference in naming my toons. The easy part is all my toons are women and I always take careful consideration in wanting to give them the best name and to make it easy for anyone who has to type my name in to send me a tell. Fusion 7 was my first toon and I used a number with the name as the name Fusion was already taken. In my toons description, I said it would take all 7 nuclei to combine to form a powerful explosion for her wondrous Nova. So, I was able to tie the name to the toons personality and attributes.
For another one of my toons, I wanted a "cat" theme with her so I ended up calling her "Cattalina". Originally wanted to spell it as Catalina like the island off of California but it was taken so I just added another "t" to make it Cattalina. You know it sounds like Catalina, it has a "cat" reference to it and is still pronounced the same way. See how that works? My last toon I rolled, Fhenix, I wanted to call Phoenix, the bird that rises from the ashes,..you can see the fun in this I hope. Picking a name to fit your toons personality. Anyways, after several, and I mean about a good hours worth of time, after several attempts I finally came up with Fhenix for my Fire/Kin Controller. Easy to spell, and when you look at it, you know it will sound like "Phoenix". Problem solved. Recently when I was building a new toon for Praetoria, I built a Domintor. I wanted to call her Dominitra but that name was taken. So, I changed the i to an e and got Domentra. Still sounds the same but I just had to compromise since the original name was already taken.
I think it should be the players right to claim the name for as long as they want it since they were creative enough to come up with it. I also think you can get by without having to add periods or Xx by the name to change it up. Just follow how I did it above and you should have no problem finding good names for your toons.
Good character names are not running out, just peoples imaginations. As you can see from my post, with a little thought you too can make a name for yourself.

Quote:This. I'm not saying put in the CO Naming system of [insertnamehere]@GlobalNameHere.What part of that was unclear to you? The majority of the people in that room, and the majority of the people in this thread, do not seem to want the system to insist on pushing at us, and find the current system perfectly equitable.
I do agree with Eva that accounts that were never linked to a global should have ALL their names released if possible, as well as trial accounts, and I even think that accounts that have been inactive for 3 years or more should have everything up to say 25 released. But I think the system you're proposing is clunky and annoying, and there have been many perfectly good refutations of it in this thread.
I'm saying the devs need to say screw the inactive accounts.
If I can do a /getglobalname and not get a globalname name for the name search, that name needs to be freed up.
I think names that are on inactive accounts of 1 (maybe 2) years, no matter the level, need to br freed up. Those people aren't playing.
Right now is the perfect time to be doing it. GR just came out, it's been out for awhile, plenty of time for those long inactive accounts to have their names purged (no matter their level), for others to use. -
Quote:First off, Slime Girl sounds awesome.I think this is where a lot of the schism is. For you, these are the exception. For me, they're the norm and "descriptive" names are the exception. The only real super hero name I have is Captain Indivisible, and I designed him as a bit of super hero parody, a kid who gained super powers from playing a lot of video games who picked the name because it was the first thing that came to his mind, and basically grew up with it.
My names beyond that? Grimwall. Morten. Iprit. Ezikiel Bane. Crash McGuier. Kyle Young. Slime Girl. Pandala. And, of course, Samuel Tow. You can see the pattern here.
But okay, yeah on the rest of the names. Okay, let's go with for you, this is the norm. But when people talk about "names taken" we all know what they mean, they mean names that you'd see in a superhero comic.
You might say be more creative, use names like "Kyle Smith" but even you should realize, that's not what they want. They want the names like "Batman" "Spider-Man" "Dardevil"
You know, the comicbook norm.
And those saying be more creative, aren't really being creative imo. At least, I don't see what's so creative about "John Smith" "Maggy Smith" "Kyle Smith" "Joanna Smith" -
Quote:Well it was more aimed at Judas, saying that using superhero sounding names, makes one uncreative. My names would probably not apply (I used an X-Com ripoff of T'lerth and a Warrior #1 sound effect of Shaffakoom), but as of Going Rogue, I've actually snagged at least a couple of names that should apply. One was Brutticus, which I brought in from another game, and the other was honest-to-god Leningrad.
Oh, and I also managed to snag Duriel, which surprised the hell out of me.
His post, like many others, sounds like "Oh, there's lots of free names, go use Sakura Rosebleed"
For the superhero setting, Sakura Rosebleed just doesn't sound superhero.
And that's exactly what people are wanting, when they say free up names.
Just on Virtue, I freed up the name Time-Shift. To me that was a superhero sounding name.
I'm not even saying all my concept for CoH is strictly the normal superhero, I'm working on a concept for the name "Lil Red Riding Hood" ...so it's not like I don't go outside the superhero genre a bit with my toons. But it's the exception to my list of heroes/rogues (Ill say rogues since I dont really make villains)...not the majority of 36 open slots on my main server. -
Is this what the toon would look like if they appeared on the psychic plane?

Quote:You know, I kinda picture that teleport idea, to be the basis of Placate. In general, I think will power is the perfect secondary for all ATs. I really hate click powers for defense. I want to kill things. I don't want to protect myself.
My ideal secondary would have 4 toggles, 3 auto powers, and 1 offensive aura and 1 offensive click. No tier-9 godmode. Thematically? I'd like a phase/teleport defense set. You know the one from anime where the bad guy (good guys never get this power) goes. Fwoosh! and vanishes, then reappears behind a good guy and creams him. I want THAT. it screams stalker. And no 2 second teleport activation time. 0.000000 not even 1 server tick activation. Instant. poof. Preferably no animation. Just gone. Exactly like the version from anime. they dn't gesture and vanish, they're just gone.
My ideal primary would have AS and 1 other slow hard-hitting attacks. All the rest would be faster than claws with no rooted time. pure buzzsaw, fast moving, in and out to go with the teleport defense. Just be all over the field. Instead of placate, have a followup clone that lets you cream someone and placate them all at once.
Also, I'd say Batman has that ability at times, so I wouldn't say it's always a badguy power. -
Quote:Okay...list me what you've gotten so far? You're right, those are crappy names. I'm sorry that your creativity is so lacking that that's the best you can come up with. In the meantime, I have no problem getting normal, english, superhero sounding names whenever I want.
I was only giving some quick examples of "Oh hey, look at my not hard to come up with, real name for a super hero...Bob Smith." or "Hey look at me, I'm so creative, I have my english, american born toon, with a Japanese/Russian/Polish/pick a language that isn't english, name!"
Joybuzzer
BrandX
Noisemaker
Spoilsport
Justice-Girl
RaveSpider
Dark God
Fiction
Void-Girl
Butterfly-Girl (or is it Butterfly Girl...I forget which)
American-Girl
There a list of names of characters I have (there are others), that I enjoy! I even go about buying rename tokens to use them over, because to me, those names sound like superhero names.
Only my magic based, demon/ghost hunter type hero, went by her real name. And that's my point. Nick Fury, Jean Grey, they're the exceptions in superhero comics...they way you and others make it sound "Oh...just use their real name" make it sound like it's normal.
Mind you, I bought the game to play superheroes. I didn't buy it because it was the newest game lets see what I can do with it. I bought it because I like the superhero genre (ie...superhero comicbook reader)...and wanted to play exactly that.
And really, if you're okay with using the names like "Jimmy Bob Smith" then I don't see why you would have a problem with names written in elite speak. At least with CoH, they have enemies who do that (mind you, Im annoyed by both >_> ). -
Quote:You'd think it was that easy.Lets talk about you and your actions in your made up scenerio. You go change your name to Johnny Hot Pants. You're still one starred by the people who say you spouting racist junk in broadcast.
If you misbehave in broadcast people can click on your name and report you by global, they can star you (which is tied to your global) or they can ignore you which might be by global.
This game has a system that lets us keep track of those who are jerks and those who are not. Players don't have to remember that johnny hot pants who was once jonny butune is a racist jerk, the game will keep a note of that for us.
I think there's a BranX (notice the lack of a D in the name) out there, that people have mistaken me for, and not ina good way.
Not everyone uses the star system, or comment system, or the report to the GMs. They ignore, and go on their way. thusly, making your system not work as well as you'd think. -
Scrappers/Stalkers:
Sick Puppies - "You're Going Down" -
My plan, for one...to move up those powers that are accessed at level 20, but I never take at level 20, because I want Stamina.
I've switched it to Stamina at 22, but notice the crunch when I exemp for those level 15+ TFs/SFs (yeah, didnt have that problem before, but now with +5 levels when exemp, I do!)
Been working and working on getting a blaster build going that I will get a sense of Scrapper (or stalker) survivability with, with these changes. If I can do that, I'll be set.
-
tactics is nice is you do lots of TFs. I don't know how many times I've heard, "I'm not hitting anything"
Really, I'd say it's better to have a mix of Tactics and Assault, while everyone is suppling the +Defense with Manuevers. -
Quote:this continues to be the lamest response.I play on Virtue, Freedom and Champion. I don't have problems getting names.
People just need to use some intelligence and creativity (i.e. stop trying to be "Captain Shadow", "Midnight Hawk" or "Spawn of Darkness") and they'll find that there are plenty of good names.
Sorry, but "Romgon the Orc" is a craptastic name.
Sorry, but "Reika Myanami" is not super hero sounding.
Stuff like Captain Shadow (okay I wouldnt use it, but thats besdies the point) is a typical Super Hero name.
People want their super hero names. And being an english based game, a lot of people want to stick to english.
Now, what they should do, is stop worring about people who's account have been inactive for a year, and free up their names. That would solve a lot of the problems. -
Quote:I figured Ninjitsu was made specifically with Stalkers in mind, as it's the only AT to have it.What do you think is the perfect set for stalkers (multi-fold question)? I ask because, as far as I can tell, there were no sets (barring 1) specifically made and balanced for the AT. Every set Stalkers get is a hand-me-down from another AT. But what if that were going to change?
-Primary or Secondary, which sets do you feel is most aesthetically fitting for stalker and why?
-Primary or Secondary, which sets are just great performers? For teams, solo, PvP, or just in your opinion?
-If the devs were planning to make a powerset specifically for the Stalker AT with its style in-mind (and proliferate it later), what do you think would/should be in it? How would it play? What might/should it look like?
Keep in mind, the set should and would be proliferated to the other melees and shouldn't require too much alteration to work. That said, it doesn't have to play perfectly on the other ATs, just Stalker.
That said, I love WP on Stalkers more than WP on Scrappers, as I personally prefere the Burst heal, over the regen of RTTC.
If they made a new set, I'd love one set up like Shields without obviously being shields...Positional Defense, Some Resists, with a self heal. Okay it's a bit different than Shields, but I think you get the point.
No +HP. No Dull Pain (unless it's maybe int he tier 9, that's setup a bit like SoW. Gives somemore +Resists with a Heal/+HP boost, that's ona fixed timer).
I don't know if I really think it needs control. I don't see stalkers as a control type per se. They're a get in, and get rid of that hard single target fast type to me.
Sadly, in this game, that means, DPS and being a melee fighter, as having the burst to take out one target to quick is OPed.
